please hire grace permanently. she's very caring and kind and has a very pleasant, gentle voice. she seems to be good at balancing hosting the show with actually caring and connecting with the people the show covers. i would love to see more of her!
if this was the parent's actual reaction then i am really happy, but something tells me (from my own experience) that things are different once the doors are closed and the cameras are off...
+Marselis Irving i gurantee it. they already had thoughts running in their head when they saw Grace for one; kinda hard to overlook her eyes and facial scars.
wow this is powerful. its crazy how differently cultures react to tattoos and body modifications. i think she looks beautiful. tattoos do not define a person.

Michelle Katzdorn Yeah, I really hope it was honest, she seemed like a really nice person, and not just her but everyone who has tats should be loved bby their parents.
+Armando You can't even spell, yet you accuse me of being ignorant. Fuck you and anyone related to you. It's clear from your comment that you don't even know what ignorant means.
Well beauty is subjective, so for you to say that people are required to find her beautiful is bullshit. Maybe you are referring to her having a "beautiful soul" or something like that. But since you directly mentioned her looks and tattoos, I have to assume you are referring to physical beauty. In that case you are wrong with your conclusion.
i think gangs image is not the only reason. Japanese people say dont injure your body, because they are what your parents gave you.So many people in Japan hate plastic surgery, piercing and tattooing. sorry for my broken English.
+mightytaiger Assuming you're Korean, I won't say you don't know what you're talking about. No one actually said tattoos are illegal. The comment about zooming in on them was made by the girl's mother to highlight the fact that the media uses tattoos to create an association with a negative image. And as a person with tattoos who lives in Korea, I feel that more than just grandparents give a shit about them. I think the attitude towards towards alternative fashion and art is changing here, but it has a hell of a long way to go.
+popcorncat wtf. if criminal who have tattoo be arrested, then they zoom on it. tattoo is actually not illegal in south korea but its reputation is fucked up.
+Unono this would actually be correct. because it is only one series that she is referring to. despite it being multiple episodes it is still one series
Yeah she's gorgeous! I really don't get why tattoos are considered such like that in this country :/ I agree that tattoos all over the body can surprise and chock a little, but being insulted just for this... well it's difficult to change people's mind, especially old people
Sooo when going home to tell your parent about your tattoos, which they are highly likely to dislike, and you need to reassure them... you take the girl with the purple eyes...
+WSA5 Summer Show In a way it's a good move 'cause they will look at Grace and think "at least my daughter didn't go as extreme as her" xD They're both so damn beautiful and their tattoos are just amazing *_*

When the mom says she just doesn't want people speaking ill of her beautiful daughter... I choked up a little bit. It is totally something my mom would say too. What a sweet little family. :'(
I'd love to see more about grace's journey!! My parents also think that tattoos are bad, and are associated with gangs, and drugs, so this is very interesting to me
How her parents took it was beautiful. They weren't worried about their daughters interests, they were worried about how people would accept their daughter. Not a lot of people, even in more accepting societies, accept things like tattoos or body mods. Her parents handled it wonderfully.
I think that that girl's parents were very sweet. I see that they love her very much and it breaks their hearts that people will judge her. I really love this series and Grace is a lovely soul.
Telling her parents I cried like a fucking baby. They are amazing people, and so understanding. The fact they accepted her, and just cared about her happiness was just great.
+Tessa Thorn yeah I'm glad they want to support her! good for them :) it was good that they showed us this "tattoo revealing" so we can understand that most parents are just worried about their kids because of the social stigma.. just some have bad reactions, like the dude's father that hasn't spoken to him for 5 years, and some are more open-minded, like Solji's parents..
The Korean woman is striking beautifull and the tattoos make her more interesting. The parents seem so loving to her, it is not that they reject her choices but the korean society is gradually moving to a more open society when it comes to tattoos, they dont want to see her have a hard life because of that. these series are the reason i still look at my subscription box multiple times a day.. she is such a lovely human and this is so incredible and educational oo i love this so much
Haxy Quinn lmao my mom has tattoos and my whole family is really open to tattoos, I’m lucky 😂😂 they’re also very open to piercings, my mother got an eyebrow piercing as a bet when she was younger, she took it out but she still talks about it lol
What an amazing video. As a Korean guy with tattoos who was born and raised in Toronto, Canada, this has never been even a minor issue for me. I forget sometimes that something so commonplace here is still regarded with such stigma in my motherland. And props to Grace. She has a very pleasant demeanour and way of speaking.
i am amazed as how her parents reacted. they were only worried for her own safety. you could tell they had so much love and respect for her- and that is not something i see very often in conservative areas/people. This such a great series, I've loved all the episodes so far. I teared up when Soji revealed her tattoos to her parents. They're incredible people for being open minded.
okay tbh... they couldn't have said anything outrageous because of the fact that they know they're being filmed... The reaction of the parents was very nice. They understood she wants to change the outlook on tattoos and wished her the best of luck. Very lovely and supportive parents.
+NoirVelours I'm planning on getting my first tattoo soon, even though my mum says she detests them. A little worried about how it'll go down once I have it
I love how artistic these little documentary episodes are. I love the host, her voice and personality really adds to the aesthetic of the videos. These videos really put a perspective on others culture in a beautiful way.
I'm Jewish, and because of everything that happened during the holocaust it is considered bad to get any kind of tattoo on your body. My great grandma was very against them, and because of that my mom was very against them too. It took me until I was 18 to tell my mom that I really wanted tattoos, and would get them no matter what. She cried. I cried too cause I thought it would ruin our relationship. Now almost a year after I did that she talks to me openly and excitedly about what tattoos I'm going to get. She says a lot how when I get my next tattoo, she needs to be there with me so that she can hold my hand. My mom and I have grown a lot closer now, and I think it's because I've been more open with her since confronting her about the issues with tattoos.
In the Torch chapter K'doshim it states that in order to be buried with your family you must not have any self endoned damaged to skin (tattos) it's not because of the Holocaust.
+8bit72HAC I hid my tattoos from my parents for a good 5 years. I always thought they would disowned me if they ever discovered I had them, but it wasn't like that at all when they found out about them. While their views on tattoos are still somewhat negative, they also understand that times have changed and that society (at least in the US) is more accepting of tattoos. While it hasn't made us "closer" it has enabled us to be more open about things which is always good.
Chenyu Fan I'm glad that it turned out well for you too ^.^ parents (if they're good parents at least) have a tendency to love their kids and support them no matter what. I only realized this after telling my mom about my view on tattoos. So hooray for us and our parents!
So glad I found this series! I love it. I've been wanting tattoos for years but I've been so hesitant about it. But I think I finally found the motivation to do this!
Love this series! Grace is such a lovely person. When i got my first tattoo on my shoulder blade, I was really afraid of how my mom / parents would react, so I hid it for the first year or so, till I accidentally forgot to put on my cardigan. My mom never said any bad thing about it, just asked if I wasn't afraid of the pain. Now that I got both my upper arms done (working on a half-sleeve and a full-sleeve), she again only asked about the pain. When my older brother said he wanted a 3/4-sleeve done, she told us she didn't like tattoos. She never tried to tell us not to do it though. I think her parents reacted really nicely. Her mom crying was the worst (because really, who can watch his/her own mom cry and not be sad), but she tried to understand. It's going into the right direction! When I'm in grandma-age, no one will ask "how do your tattoos look now", because many others will be covered as well. So, as some other people said before, it just needs some time. A few years or centuries...
Recently got into this series and I love it as well. Being Chinese, there are the same stigma's so watching up to the scene at the playground totally hit home as well and the "sickness" feeling of showing revealing to your parents came rushing back. Love the series, keep up the great work!
+lonerwhohasfriends97 I was thinking of the same thing haha like Sol-ji: mom dad i have something to confess...i have massive sick tattoos on my back Sol-ji's Parents: oh thank god i thought you were gay
dads in these types of cultures and most cultures around the world are seen as the head of the family, so lots of kids look for their approval, or it could just be that she has a very strong daughter father bond.
It's a societal thing. In the U.K., the US, Canada, etc. either parent can be the dominant one, the bringer-home of bacon. In other societies like in China, Korea, etc. this falls to the father, and so his approval and accaptance is paramount. You can WANT mum's. You NEED his.
Its not that they object to her tattoos, its that they object to the prejudice that choosing that particular way to express herself in their country will invite into her life. The daughter is a trailblazer, but they don't want her to be. I get that.
Did anyone else think it was really weird that they interviewed Grace after Seoji revealed her tattoos to her parents? I want to know how SEOJI felt, not Grace... As a tattooed Korean-American woman with Korean parents, this video really hit home. My parents have also never seen any of my tattoos and I'm scared to death to show them... Really wish they had interviewed Seoji afterwards. Would've been nice to hear her insight.
don't be scared for I have lots of body mods and I also have tattoos which my parents are not fond of for I get called a freak a lot and all I want is to understood and I look up to Soji and Grace
+Sarah Kim to me the whole series feels focused from the bias of the western girl. Treating Seoji and other ppl in the docu series as subjects and not really people. I want to hear from their experience not grace's reaction to their experience ...
I'm really proud of a girl this covered in tattoos to reveal this to her parents in a society where it's so frowned upon. It's truly incredible, but what's more incredible is how well they actually took it, and how their support for their beloved daughter outshone what they've known, learned and believed for decades about people with tattoos. She's beautiful. Even for a person as classy as her in, let's say, the US, it's a bit unusual to be that covered in tattoos. She reveals this to her parents, and here I am in the US, with one tattoo, which has been one of the most difficult, and at the same time happiest decisions of my life, unable to tell my parents. My father would probably kick me out of the house if I told him, and that's nothing compared to this. I wish my parents were as open as these are. It was a fantastic moment to be captured. This entire series is easily one of the most interesting, and especially well-filmed VICE-produced series I've ever watched. Cinematographer Tom Seal, I may not know who you are, and I may not have seen any of your other work, but you did a fantastic job.
I feel REALLY proud of that girl for saying "I can change that." and that just... she has determination, she is the face of Korea's alternative beauty industry and she has to help people get more accepting of it and to maybe, someday, get it legalized
It's so hard to believe that an art form as beautiful and expressive as tattooing could be illegal anywhere in the world. It was very brave of her to show her parents her tattoos, especially in a place where tattoos are frowned upon so heavily. I hope someday tattoos will be as celebrated in South Korea as they are many places here in America.
grace looked so beautiful on the swing with her hair all flowey! i'm really enjoying this series! and the woman who showed her tattoos to her parents is so brave!!! also her backpiece is so beautiful like her! it really fits to her body and face!
people are saying that solji will be beaten with the cameras off, but I think solji doesn't seem to have that kind of relationship with her parents. if she feared greater harm, I doubt she would have done this, particularly when the cameras could've aggravated the situation more in future potential arguments.
Her parents were really thoughtful about it and her mother still calls her beautiful. I hope Gracie gets to many more episodes exploring other countries as well. Many countries have a history that involves body art and Gracie seems to be the right person to show it to the world.
I'm from South Korea but moved to England at a young age and when I got my first tattoo on my inner bicep there was a similar reaction from my mum that was shown here from these parents. I never understood why but this series has really shone a light on the traditional views on body modification that South Koreans have. After the initial shock though she really accepted my reasons for having it done and what the tattoo meant to me. She supported me on the tattoo choices I've had since and it's something we talk about a lot in a positive light.
I wonder if Solji's parents were thinking she was gonna tell them she's a lesbian and Grace is her gf or something lol
lmfao xD
+Mzmissy215 that was the first thing that came to my mind lol
Me too hahah

Just checked her instagram (@jia.tattoo) and it seems like at least her mother accepted her tattoos.
angelofdeath275 maybe seeing Grace kinda soften the blow???
Stop being pessimistic. Just because you had a shitty experience, doesn't mean everyone else should.
wow this is powerful. its crazy how differently cultures react to tattoos and body modifications. i think she looks beautiful. tattoos do not define a person.
Well, in a way I think they do define a person. It's what they like and symbolism on their bodies.
tattoos DO define a person, that's what they're all about; expressing yourself without using traditional means of communication.
ClandestineGirl16X it defines their lack of self respact and the abuse of their bodies.
A just realized how Similarly the way they recact to tattoos, is to the way society I'm European countries recact to the LGBT community.

God, Soji is so beautiful. No wonder Grace was transfixed at the first moment.
***** aha, xD it is sometimes hard for me to understand Grace's accent.
She obviously had surgery though. it's pretty common among Korean girls.
And? Your point is?
Think they played scissor?
+Bleu Marina she was just saying
That girl is absolutely gorgeous and so are her tattoos. Anyone who can't see the beauty in someone like that is just ignorant, stupid or both.

Her father's reaction was so eloquent and empathetic. It was beautiful!!!
Hit me right in the feels
These guys took it better than my parents, my mom throw a flip flop at me while i was running away from her yelling. Classic latina mom
legit my mom if i had a tattoo
I suspect they had a different reaction after Grace and the cameras were gone
Haxy Quinn lmao my mom has tattoos and my whole family is really open to tattoos, I’m lucky 😂😂 they’re also very open to piercings, my mother got an eyebrow piercing as a bet when she was younger, she took it out but she still talks about it lol
It is insane that she has had to keep her tattoos covered for years. How the heck did she manage?
I am absolutely loving this whole series of videos. They are shot so cinematically and so beautifully.
love this series tbh. Grace wasn't judgmental at all, and I'm happy for that
+qwertylee thank you for being honest

Love this series. Good work to not only Grace but the people behind the scenes that we don't see. You're all doing an amazing job.
Grace Neutral the kind of girl you can meet once at a club and immediately take home to your parents for moral support. What an amazing person.
I thought the tattoo on her back was fucking rad
I'm enjoying this series so much. Please have Grace Neutral explore more body modification cultures around the globe 💙
I actually think the parents, especially the Dad, handled it perfectly
The cinematography of these videos is breathtaking. I love the stories with these too.
Just so gorgeous

The reaction of the parents was very nice. They understood she wants to change the outlook on tattoos and wished her the best of luck. Very lovely and supportive parents.
+Vi that's what I was thinking the whole time.
Vi They may have handled themselves differently on camera, that is understandable, but we can only hope they were genuine.
That reveal went a lot better than I expected it to. It's great that her parents seem to be supportive of the path she's chosen though.
+Josh Moore Indeed! My parents yelled at me and called me stupid when they saw my first tattoo.
+NoirVelours I'm planning on getting my first tattoo soon, even though my mum says she detests them. A little worried about how it'll go down once I have it
+Josh Moore my mom hates tattoos too but she's over it by now
+Josh Moore Same. My mom absolutely hates them
That full back tattoo is amazing!
+ThisIsMyFullName yes! oh my god, the coloring? divine.
I love how artistic these little documentary episodes are. I love the host, her voice and personality really adds to the aesthetic of the videos. These videos really put a perspective on others culture in a beautiful way.
I'm enjoying this series with Grace so much. Such an insightful look into a very different culture but also the similar judgements we have.
Amongst the best documentaries I've seen on RUclips. Also - Grace is better at this than a lot of trained journalists I've seen. Top notch!
+Gavin Grace seems to really care about the people, journalists mostly care about the story?
So glad I found this series! I love it. I've been wanting tattoos for years but I've been so hesitant about it. But I think I finally found the motivation to do this!
loving this series! and I could listen to Grace talk all day
+Ari Mackay Agreed. I love how genuine and well spoken she is.
A few years or centuries...
wow her parents were so loving and they didn't judge her. that really warmed my heart
Their parents' supportiveness is beautiful. Thank you for sharing this! It had me in tears
Omg the parents would have thought that she was coming out especially since grace was with her 😂🌚
Thats what i thought too HAHAHA
Recently got into this series and I love it as well. Being Chinese, there are the same stigma's so watching up to the scene at the playground totally hit home as well and the "sickness" feeling of showing revealing to your parents came rushing back. Love the series, keep up the great work!
Lol its like she's coming out to her parents that shes gay, with a girl and all. I low key ship it tho
+lonerwhohasfriends97 I was thinking of the same thing haha like
Sol-ji: mom dad i have something to confess...i have massive sick tattoos on my back
Sol-ji's Parents: oh thank god i thought you were gay
Wow. This made me cry so much. This is really beautiful. You're really beautiful, Grace. Thank you for doing this.
it's interesting that she was more concerned about her dad but her mom seemed a lot more deeply upset
dads in these types of cultures and most cultures around the world are seen as the head of the family, so lots of kids look for their approval, or it could just be that she has a very strong daughter father bond.
It's a societal thing. In the U.K., the US, Canada, etc. either parent can be the dominant one, the bringer-home of bacon. In other societies like in China, Korea, etc. this falls to the father, and so his approval and accaptance is paramount. You can WANT mum's. You NEED his.
I live this series! I hope they will produce more series like this on many topics in different places.
The editing for these videos are 🔥
Love everything about these episodes! From the topic to the narrator
The dad was really wise, cool guy
+Supercell yeah I know 😟
this is my new favourite RUclips series
The editing in these videos are amazing:)
The filming is so good
LOVE this series!!!
The tattoos of that girl are AMAZING!
Love these episodes! Grace truly is a humble, beautiful soul.
I feel REALLY proud of that girl for saying "I can change that." and that just... she has determination, she is the face of Korea's alternative beauty industry and she has to help people get more accepting of it and to maybe, someday, get it legalized
Wow those parents where amazing. Made me want to tear up with how much they cared for their daughter regardless.
Seoji's tattoos are perfect. Its beautiful 💖
This is truly amazing!! I love keeping up with these videos! Grace you are a true world changer. 😊💕
more of this series please!
grace looked so beautiful on the swing with her hair all flowey! i'm really enjoying this series! and the woman who showed her tattoos to her parents is so brave!!! also her backpiece is so beautiful like her! it really fits to her body and face!
I would LOVE to work at i-D. This is truly inspiring being Korean myself and knowing how the society is against stuff like this.
people are saying that solji will be beaten with the cameras off, but I think solji doesn't seem to have that kind of relationship with her parents. if she feared greater harm, I doubt she would have done this, particularly when the cameras could've aggravated the situation more in future potential arguments.
Her parents were really thoughtful about it and her mother still calls her beautiful. I hope Gracie gets to many more episodes exploring other countries as well. Many countries have a history that involves body art and Gracie seems to be the right person to show it to the world.
okay RUclips you won, I've watched it, now leave me alone.
me too 🙃
+Mary Black hahah true man true !
+Mary Black youtube wants an oscarr
I'm from South Korea but moved to England at a young age and when I got my first tattoo on my inner bicep there was a similar reaction from my mum that was shown here from these parents. I never understood why but this series has really shone a light on the traditional views on body modification that South Koreans have. After the initial shock though she really accepted my reasons for having it done and what the tattoo meant to me. She supported me on the tattoo choices I've had since and it's something we talk about a lot in a positive light.
very cool. 😊
