this is based on the true story and turns out the way it did in history. shaw's parents said that they didn't want their son returned to boston to be put to rest because he'd have wanted to be buried with his men, that shows how much he had come to understand and care for his men.
After watching this review I went to the comments to leave my disappointment about this review but I strarted reading the comments and was pleased I was not the only one frustrated with these two. I really hope they take these comments to heart and not blowing them off.
Ive never heard someone talk so much through such a serious film it was soo irritating. I just skipped around to see how theyd react to the big scenes and every one pissed me off.
Colonel Robert Gould Shaw Was shot and killed during the second battle of Fort Wagner which took place in July of 1863. He is buried in a mass grave with his men. When offers to dig up his son and return his body for burial back in Massachusetts, his father Frank wrote this: "We would not have his body removed from where it lies surrounded by his brave and devoted soldiers. ... We can imagine no holier place than that in which he lies, among his brave and devoted followers, nor wish for him better company. - what a body-guard he has!"
While being conducted into the fort I saw Colonel Shaw, of the 54th Massachusetts (colored) Regiment, lying dead upon the ground just outside the parapet. A stalwart negro had fallen near him. The rebels said the negro was a color-sergeant. The Colonel had been killed by a rifle-shot through the chest, though he had received other wounds. Brigadier-General Hagood, commanding the rebel forces, said to me: “I knew Colonel Shaw before the war, and then esteemed him. Had he been in command of white troops, I should have given him an honorable burial. As it is, I shall bury him in the common trench, with the negroes that fell with him.” The burial party were then at work; and no doubt Colonel Shaw was buried just beyond the ditch of the fort in the trench where I saw our dead indiscriminately thrown.
It's more along the lines of it makes you question how there's an entire generation of nonsensical "woke-ism" that thinks everything taught in school is this huge lie, and then turns around and perceives events that happened hundreds of years ago with this BS moral high ground because somehow their feelings are more truthful than fact. It's pure dissonance on display.
Im not sure why they laughed so much during this, very confusing for me. I haven't seen every reaction on the channel, but this is by far the worst and most disrespectful that I have seen.
Geez this was hard to watch. Probably a little less cracking jokes and a little more paying attention. Also just the general lack of knowledge or common sense. I generally don't ding people for being uninformed, but when that is taken to the extreme and causes the individual to form very incorrect assumptions due to lack of basic research, its very annoying. "Boyo" is a welsh term meaning man or boy. Its not a derogatory term. The Sgt Maj telling him to "let him grow up some more" meant to stop coddling. He wasn't being mean for no reason. They're getting ready to go to war...its not rainbows and unicorns. Whipping was the form of punishment in the military at the time. The Colonel showed that they were no different, by handing down a punishment that any white soldier would have received for the same offense. Also he was punished for leaving camp when he wasn't supposed to, not for having biscuits and gravy. That's considering being AWOL. Those not saluting weren't in the military, so they don't salute the precession. Just like those who are in the military salute the flag during the national anthem and those who aren't, place their hand over their heart.
What Col. Shaw meant by "I know exactly how you feel" is being surprised by being rapidly promoted to a position of immense responsibility & not feeling either ready or wanting of it. But, having to step up & do the job because you were being depended on to do so. Was amazing back then how high ranking military officers were young by today's standards. People must hv grown up quicker in harder times.
Wow. That's not at all surprising actually. Many stories of young "kids" joining up during war time from various countries, not just in the US. Kids tried joining up at 16 to go to the trenches during WW1.@@Valkyrie1911
Most people moderate intelligence completely understood what Shaw was conveying in that statement. All except people that are too busy talking about hair and goatees and how much the whipping scene triggered them.
Roxy had so many questions it would take so much time to answer. The vernacular, the corporal punishment, the abusive drill sergeant, Shaw's inner conflict, etc... There are resources online to help answer all those questions. Denzel delivered a performance that scored him an Oscar, but Andre Braugher was equally good.
I am a definitely a member of teh reject nation, but I got 10 minutes and shut it off, this was beyond pathetic, and a discredit to everything and everyone that this story is trying tell. I'd be embarrassed to have posted this. To edit this, and not realize how bad this reaction was. Cmon. Totally undercut and made a mockery of an important and incredible piece of cinema.
RE: The whipping scene. This was a universal punishment in pretty much any army of the time. If a white soldier had been caught going AWOL they would have received the same punishment. Also, regarding the constant bleating about 'The Tactics', slow firing, low accuracy, low range rifles worked best when fired in volleys against massed formations. This also accounts for the seemingly low numbers of casualties per volley and the requirement to close with the enemy. This is basic history, surprised the reactors weren't aware of any of this.
I think most people that aren't interested in history think that line formations were complete suicide that happened because people back then we're idiots that didn't know how to fight properly. Although by the time of the civil most soldiers used rifles instead of smoothbore muskets so the accuracy and range weren't that bad which contributed to the high loses during combat
The only issue with this flogging scene is that by this point flogging had been banned as a punishment in the U.S. Army. Literally right before the war began. There were certainly other painful punishments that could be inflicted (riding the wooden pony, strung up by your thumbs) but historically, flogging was banned.
_This is basic history, surprised the reactors weren't aware of any of this._ Reel Rejects is like the MCU/podcast review generation. Are you really that surprised?
It’s the not education system, it’s the students. It’s time to stop blaming the school anytime somebody is stupid. Maybe they were teenage jerk offs who didn’t care about the class? Probably more likely.
I was very much like Thomas when I joined the Army, and I'll have to disagree with your view that Elwes' character is the "good" one and Broderick the "bad." Elwes as an officer has low expectations of the men, saying during training that marching is all they'll ever get to do. He doesn't believe that they'll see combat. Broderick's character has high expectations and knows what combat is like. He wants to ensure they'll have the mental fortitude when the time comes. Same with the Irish training Sergeant who focuses on the company's weak link (Thomas) because he's clearly out of shape and not as physical as the rest. I was Thomas during my basic training cycle, and my Drill Sergeants focused on me a bit (this was 2007 and they were fresh off OIF). Also, Broderick is treating the men as he treats all others. While the movie gets this part wrong, flogging was common against all troops until it was out of Army regulations in 1861 (their training is set in 1862). It wasn't because Denzel stole things, it was because he was a deserter (in their eyes) which could carry a death sentence in that era. Again, it was to show that Shaw would not treat his men any different than others.
The reactors on this were absolutely horrible. It would’ve been better to have Greg by himself. They were short of a disgrace and it has nothing to do with being liberal. Stop with that lemming hive mind bullsh*t
If these two were in the same room with me and my friends, i would stop the movie and tell them to leave. To quote a movie, "You have nothing to say, and you're saying it much too loudly."
@@paul1979uk2000I left it on simply to see their reaction to the ending. I figured that would have to sober them up… nope, as the film shows Shaw dumped into the mass grave, their only comment was a snarky thing about his hair still looking perfect. What the actual…
Not paying attention: 1) You ask why don't they want them to fight? Keeping them from fight would save them? If you stopped talking, laughing you would've heard them say that Robert's men are to valuable to his corrupt operation and that why he need them for general labour and ransacking homes. 2) see you in the fort, "whats the fort? Fourth quarter? How uneducated are you?, both your listening skills are below average. A few minutes ago Robert volunteered to lead the march into "FORT" Wagner!!! You both are the worse movie reactors i have ever come across!!!
This may be one of the first reactions on this channel that I do not like at all, for the sheer reason that they are not looking at it through the eyes of when the movie takes place in but through present day eyes of an uninformed civilian who is clearly never served in a military conflict. Times were different then people were different than good or bad and this is a serious movie that was not taken seriously and when you realize that this movie is one of the few war movies that is as close to the truth as possibly could be or so they say, it makes a person disheartened to see these real men's stories laughed at
It goes over the history of the every day soldier very well, Gettysburg was great for the officers and the whole picture but Glory captures the suffering of the infantry quite well.
Very much this. It really burns me when reactors refuse or are unable separate social structures of today from the past. I’m surprised I watched the entire thing. Normally I refuse to watch reactions that start off this bad because they just get worse.
@@cnikkiturner76Knowing who the two reactors were (the two I generally don’t enjoy), I didn’t even bother to watch until I’d come to the comments beforehand, to see what folks thought of their reaction. Now I’m really glad I decided to do that. The last thing I need is to feel more disheartened about my fellow countrymen & (from all the comments) their cluelessness about such an important aspect of our country. One that is still being clearly felt today. I’m sure it likely saved me from a few hours of depression.
@@darc8221this was in no way shape or form satire, on any level. This was ignorance. Not to mention the mass sacrifice and importance of the 54th, and this subject matter would be in horrible taste to satirize anyway.
What a serious movie for you two to be cracking jokes the entire time. This movie has moved me everytime I have seen it. Also, was your generation not taught anything about the Civil War and the common things that were considered acceptable back then? I usually like you both and your reactions but this one was not a good one imo.
@@lovelylynn25 YOU WERE MAKING OUT DURING SCHINDLER'S LIST?? DURING SCHINDLER'S LIST??? honestly cracking jokes doesn't bother me, but the absolute ignorance on display was beyond pathetic.
This goes to show y’all not all content is good content. These 2 have the worst reaction I’ve seen in awhile. I’d take this down this is an embarrassment to BHM.
It is kind of crazy to see the reaction during this movie how much of the information is unknown by these 2 or how much was missed because they didn't understand what was going on during the movie. It would have been nice to have reactors with a little more understanding of the time period of the movie.
There's a difference between sarcasm and disgusting ignorance. This whole reaction was stain on what is normally a respectable and understanding channel. The fact that they are not even addressing it on their channel or page is sad. Just delete this reaction and issue a brief apology. All would be forgiven. This makes the rest of them look bad for not acknowledging it.
It’s a historical fiction but large parts of the movie are based on real facts and events. Colonel Shaw and many of the 54th died charging that fort trying save the republic. Even though it’s a movie I don’t see how anyone can joke about it. A holocaust museum isn’t a real holocaust but a representation and teaching of it, you don’t crack jokes there either.
@@CoryGasaway People with attitudes like theirs are the ones who would issue a "I wasn't being rude/insensitive. My comments were misunderstood" if they do anything. Their egos will not allow an apology without a "but" attached to it.
Matthew Broderick's character understood perfectly what the sergeant's "Let him grow up some more!" comment meant? Going easy on his friend (or any of the recruits) won't help them when the s**t hits the fan. It's the sergeant's job to toughen them up, especially Andre Braugher's "cityfied" character. RIP Andre Keith Braugher BTW, a fantastic actor.
This is also when Shaw realised they weren't pushing them enough to prepare them for the battle they will face. It's not all marching and he realised that. It's a great scene.
Please don't pair these reactors ever again for anything serious & historic. The pure ignorance & disrespect was astounding! Cracking bad jokes over a pivotal moment in civil war history & lack of knowledge over basic things. I'm from the UK & even I'm aware of this - wasn't taught it at school but used that magical thing called the internet to educate myself. I've seen many reactions from this channel, including these 2. But I think individually they've been balanced out with other reactors who show more thought & appreciation for the content. Almost turned it off after 10mins but carried on with the hope they would redeem themselves....they didn't 😢
I stopped watching at the scene where the town got burned. I was already not enjoying their reaction, but that did me in. The “jokes” were so distasteful.
I liked Glory. The reaction rubbed me the wrong way. It was enough to make me unfollow. They had no understanding of the most basic concepts like the south seceding from the union, hence the term “sesh woman.” Something taught in 5th grade. Then they act like they are morally superior without understanding what is actually happening in the scene so their reaction comes off shallow and distasteful. Their laughing during such a serious topic and film was cringeworthy. I’ve never said this about any reaction on this channel, but I hated this one. The Colonel and his men were all tossed into a mass grave as equals. It was filmed this way because that’s what happened. You were supposed to see the symbolism in the moment. But I’m sorry you didn’t like the truth and wanted Hollywood to create a better ending. I know, let’s change history and say they didn’t die and that they joined a dance troop to make you feel better. I just noticed that I’m not the only one that felt this way.
Agreed. It was a constant struggle for me to keep watching this reaction. It was sad to see how they completely misconstrued Matthew Broderick's character and what he was sacrificing for his regiment, to a basic "Oh he is whipping Denzel Washington's, what a dick.", not realizing that this was standard punishment for any soldier who was thought to be AWOL (Absent Without Leave). It wasn't like colonel Shaw wanted to punish him, but he wanted to treat them like any other soldier and prepare them for the hardship of war.
Exactly. I think you have to be a pretty terrible person to judge people of the past under today’s standards. Like somehow you are better than they are and “I would have done this or that.” Virtue signaling at its finest.
Please don't group all 'liberals' together. I'm an elder millenial (44 years old) and I tend to lean left, and I understood every reference, and loved this movie. I saw this movie in middle school, but I fell asleep cuz I was a typical bored teenager. I watched it again in my twenties when I started to become a movie lover. It's just a matter of learning details and the intent of the message when the film was made. Some people didn't learn that, and the historical context of both the subject matter, and when the movie itself was made. That has nothing to do with their political leanings, though. There are plenty of right-wingers in Congress who have shown much more ignorance to Civil War history as well.
Your a tweener like me (also 44) your a young GenXer and a old Millenial. Most of the millennials we talking about is the mid to young millennials going into Genz.
I’m a 56 year old, lifelong liberal (and fairly far left at that) & I didn’t watch this because I came to the comments first & realized I would be annoyed & disheartened by watching this. The effects of this conflict are still going on today. You would think this aspect, at least, would have been obvious to them. I’m not sure why someone would watch this film & apply the thoughts we have today on what was happening 160 years ago. That’s no way to understanding & appreciating how far we’ve come (or the warning of how far, maybe, we haven’t come).
I know everybody copes differently with things, but for me personally it was infuriating me to hear them say so many jokes as they were watching this important movie. Again, for me it just felt extremely disrespectful
It wasn't just that either, it was them not realizing that what they were witnessing was a completely different time and the fact they kept getting so angry over the dumbest shit.
And still there's no word from their OWNERS as to an apology, doesn't that speak volume. I guess Greg is just hoping to ignore it all and it will go away??
@@koreancowboy42With a modern lens you can say you're morally superior. I hear genius academics declare it all the time. It takes real reflection to realize you're not the hero, you'd probably conform under Nazi occupation, you'd probably shoot innocent people under threat if ordered by the state, you'd probably own slaves if you were taught it was ordained by God or part of your family traditions. In any other time you're probably the bastard that's condemned as evil today. Racists are fucking disgusting, period. But I'm not going to pretend my morals were part of me at birth. If I wasn't taught correctly as well as privileged enough to be openly "good" I would not be good.
I'm not usually mean in comments but I can't help myself here. This reaction was so putrid and infuriating, I'd be humiliated for even putting it up if I owned this channel. I'm not expecting people to be historians at all, but the lack of even basic knowledge about the Civil War is unbelievable. Like neither of these two people had any idea what they were watching or what they were supposed to be thinking. It's seriously like this is the first time they've ever heard there was a Civil War in America. My god.
Same, i wanted to write something similar, but it seems everyone is voicing their issues. How hard is it to understand this was 160 years ago. They made Shaw out to be a villain 🤦
I have never heard any reactors talk so much over a movie and much of the time irreverently - laughing and giggling during very serious scenes. I was encouraged at the length of the edit, which is very rare, but you nearly ruined it with almost constant talking and joking...thanks for trying, but I wouldn't want to endure this anymore.
I had to come to the comments to see if this was as hard for others to watch as myself. These two know nothing and i dont think they appreciate this movie at all.
History class no longer teaches history. It gives a brief summary then moves on. I learned more history from RUclips channels than I did from my entire school life.
@@Saffi____ there is too much history for students to learn if they actually went through it in extreme detail. Plus, most students have always not paid enough attention to actually remember the details when they are taught.
She's so caught up on the whipping scene. Clearly she didn't hear Morgan Freeman warn Denzel Washington That he was liable to get shot.... But instead he only got whipped. In other words it was an act of mercy.
So strange to hear people laude Cary Elwes charter and hate Mathew Broderick's. If carey Elwes was in charge theyd all be dead. Hes so unserious. Was happy for the soldiers to just be used as manuel labor and Broderick's character wanted them to be treated like any soldier and fight.
I saw this in the theater as part of a school field trip for history class. I was 15 or 16 at the time. We were all riveted in our seats--hushed as teenagers. By the time the 54th charged Fort Wagner, we erupted in cheers. We wanted the 54th to be victorious. The bus ride back to school, we were all silent. I don't know that any other history lesson ever had such a collective impact on a class I was in.
These two never should do a reaction video to a serious educational movie ever again. I don’t think they know anything about history whatsoever. They really disrespected this film to be honest
I don't know if this channel has a leader or if its a committee thing. But whatever the case, they really should consider putting these 2 either on "suspension" or getting rid of them altogether, for the sake of the channel. Because reactions like this could seriously put a big dent in the channels views and earnings. At the very least, everyone needs to sit down for a meeting to discuss exactly what went wrong in this video and how do you prevent it from happening again.
I'm a fan of Reel Rejects. But, this was a hard watch. Not because of the movie, but because of the reaction. The laughter, jokes, and talking over important explanations were tough. I get the light hearted approach, its why i like the channel. But the humor coupled with the ignorance of EVERYTHING was just too much. I hope that they do a little research, rewatch the reaction, and learn. ❤
Your looking at it kinda wrong. The attack wasn't the battle. The battle was to be seen as equals and light for their freedom. In many ways the movie ended with them finally winning their battle.
This movie review is one of the weakest I've seen on this channel so far. This Roxy doesn't seem to be the brightest candle on the cake. Even I as a European have more understanding and knowledge about the American Civil War than these two clowns.
@@Mike-ol7gt There are more of them that are embarrassing to watch I ask myself the question, is it a problem of today's generation that they are not able to understand more complex movies or are they just jaded because they grew up with borderline stupid movies
This went way beyond a reaction. You guys literally talked through the entire movie. Not your best reaction becasue the talk went in all random directions. Not your best one.
The white savior comment was especially stupid. This was during the Civil War folks, this is just simply how it was and what happened. Everyone, watch the Dos Cavazos reaction for a FAR BETTER and less ignorant reaction to this movie. Greg, you got some cleanup on aisle "uninformed".
You don't have to be a Civil War scholar to enjoy this movie. The world within the movie explains itself well enough... for those who care to pay attention. You would think that even the most obtuse and thick-headed citizen might have learned a bare minimum to be able to follow a movie like this, even if that learning was only by pure accident. Congrats on walking around in a sea of information and never getting wet.
Yes, Matthew knows exactly how Morgan feels in that scene because context matters. This was about leadership. Many good leaders initially do not want the role because of the immense responsibility. This is why Morgan was chosen for promotion because Matthew knew he would make a good leader.
READ THIS COMMENT, REJECTS! I remember watching this film for the first time and loving every bit of it until THAT ENDING. I was thinking, _"What? They... they LOST??"_ I was thinking _"what was the point of this story?"._ And then that epilogue came and it detailed exactly why the defeat of the 54th Massachusetts was such a critical moment in both the Civil War and American history. Their bravery even in the face of overwhelming defeat inspired an entire nation and led to the influx of hundreds of thousands more troops which ultimately turned the tide of the war. Because people either forget or simply aren't aware that the Civil War was actually in the South's favor, and if it wasn't for this particular moment in history, the South could very well have won-- and the Union would have been split and slavery would have persisted... well into the 20th Century, perhaps beyond. It was that realization that hit me like a ton of bricks. This film and this story greatly realigned my perception of American history. And it just irks me that this incredibly important historical moment is not taught widely in schools. Why doesn't everyone know this story??
This moment and the emancipation proclamation were the turning points. Until the latter, there was still the threat that the confederacy could get assistance from European powers, much as the US did during the revolution. Cotton was a big commodity for international trade after all. However, in making the war about slavery and not just reunification, Lincoln gave the anti-slavery European powers a conundrum; helping a slave holding power or retaining their anti slavery stance
I taught history for 30 years, and my (public school in the Bronx) high schoolers all knew a helluva lot more about history than these two dim lightbulbs.
Nope- I’ve watched this with my kids. Unlike these two reactors, they understood the time period, the terminology, the seriousness and importance of these events, and had the appropriate emotional response to the ending. These two are just horrifying.
The emptiest vessels make the most noise (and get the most views). As a US History Teacher that labors 7 days/week to teach the history and lessons of the Civil War to Middle Schoolers, I was depressed enough to comment due to my being so disappointed at how little these two knew about... well.. anything. Having said that, the comments by the viewers have already rendered to lift my hopes that not every person is as ignorant as these two. Carry on!
At the age of 10, I was caught up in the Centennial observances of the Civil War. I eagerly read every thing I could about that conflict, made all the more urgent by the renewed effort of the Civil Rights movement of the early 60s. Over sixty years later, my library shelves are full of history, world as well as US. Please keep plugging away --you never know your efforts will fall upon young ears and help enrich a child's life.
I applaud you!! I wanted to be a history teacher. You all are doing a much better job than these two reactors indicate; my kids are 10 - 16 and all of them are far more knowledgeable than these two adults.
It’s one thing not to know much about history, especially if that’s not your thing. But to not know Anything about the Civil War?? Not one thing? Not one shred of basic knowledge? And the constant jokes and laughing especially during dramatic scenes, not a great look. Sense the tone guys. There’s a time for levity and a time to shut your lips and learn something.
I usually like all the reactions guys but yikes. Pretty much everyone else feels the same way. Lets take projects like Glory and show a little more tact & respect. Been a fan since the Ryan Right days, Greg. Lets do better gang.
This film was one of the greatest movies ever made. The cast, the score, the direction, the camera work, the sets and costumes were all fantastic. Since you both were talking and making bad jokes during the film, you both missed important dialogue and context. Broderick’s facial hair was so he could look the part of the real Col Shaw, since this is based on his writings, in part. The Sgt Major character was likely a seasoned veteran of the war, so he had to push the men hard so they would be ready for the horrors of war. As for the flogging scene, Shaw is treating his soldiers like any soldier, so if he caught a white soldier deserting his post he would have flogged him too. Historically speaking though, flogging was no longer in practice at the time in the Union Army, but Tripp could have been shot or have any other terrible punishment that was in practice at the time. That scene was only for the film and didn’t happen in real life. As for the pay issue, the real Col Shaw starts the protest and sent word to the war department and received no pay along with his entire unit. There was such an uproar about it that they quickly got the proper pay. His men knew he respected them in real life.
I was born and raised in Minnesota; Glory is one of my favorite war movies of all time, and this reaction was extremely hard to watch. I am younger than these guys, and I can comprehend so much more than whatever they were doing in this entire reaction. Clearly their education didn't properly teach them this (or they are just being overtly ignorant to historical pieces) otherwise they would not be laughing, cracking jokes, saying some of the dumbest things I have heard to this film, and completely missing any of the most important parts of story and messages throughout its entirety. Absolutely disrespectful behavior and just saying some of the most brain-rot things I have heard. This may sound really mean of me but either go back to school and take US History or educate yourselves properly before making yourselves look like disingenuous people. Stop viewing things in so modernly and getting upset at things you clearly don't understand and think the worst of it. Most of the comments on here criticizing the whole video would be non-existent if you properly learned the history and realized your viewpoint should not be your behavior and instead you should look at it objectively, maybe you guys would have had a more enlightening and fulfilling experience instead of overreacting and talking nonsense.
It's kind of astounding how little of actual history these two know about. It's actually really insulting to be honest. Yet they were sitting judging and being holier than thou SJW types the entire movie. I honestly thought maybe I was just reading into this too much, but to see the comments on here, makes it apparent that these two are f'n stupid. Sorry, but not sorry. This is what happens when you're an entitled, easily manipulated generation of pop culture addicts who care nothing more than just to portray an image of themselves to social media for their five minutes of fame.
Thank you! You said exactly what I wanted to say more eloquently than I could. My God, I'm their age or younger. They did not get this movie. At all. Such disrespect and disregard for history.
This was a very disrespectful viewing. The general ignorance of so many things, the Civil War in general, led these two to misunderstand so much, along with the uninformed joking of what were meant as serious moments, just leaves you with a dirty feeling. It's like the dog tag scene in Saving Private Ryan. They're joking around while everyone watches in disgust.
Yea y’all disrespected this legendary film something terrible. Went off on 1-2 minute convos like it was nothing. Making jokes during the most serious and legendary moments
I'm sorry, but I stopped watching 30 minutes in. That was painful. I've caught a couple of reactions recently on different channels, where a disturbing lack of knowledge of their own society's history, was displayed by younger gens.
You guys have to learn history ! You do realize this movie was based Colonel Shaw's letter's home and diary? As The Great Great Grandson one of the State of Iowa's first Medal of Honor recipient (Union soldier) and had family members serve just about every war after to Vietnam. Most people were hanged for desertion in the Civil War. Whipped or hanged what punishment you have given him (Denzel)? PVT. Slovik, yes a white man, was the last person executed for desertion/Cowardice During WWII he got the firing squad! I had an uncle during WWII who was shot in the head trying to cross a bridge He survived he knew he was probably going to get shot as they were sending his platoon over the bride one at a time, while the US captain was taking shot at them if the froze, All to liberate a concentration camp filled with Jewish people.
More than likely they’re the ones who post memes about “school never taught us X…” when in fact they were the ones talking/goofing off/ignoring the lesson.
No. I'm a teacher. My freshman watch this film every year and write essays about it. They are way more knowledgeable than these two. This was embarrassingly bad for them. I suggested they just delete this reaction. Trust me, students today understand the history, nuances, and overall historical context of this film way more than them.
@@CoryGasaway thanks for your hard work. My family are mostly all educators and so I know the struggle. You can’t educate the willfully ignorant though (like these reactors are).
I disagree slightly, because every other Glory reaction I've seen, the reactors are respectful and demonstrate at least basic knowledge of the situation. It's only these two where I saw total and complete ignorance. So maybe they were just bad students? lol. Or went to particularly bad schools, or were poorly home-schooled? But I don't think the entire education system is at fault, otherwise nearly every Glory reaction would be this bad. This one is uniquely terrible. I mean, to be totally unable to think as to what "secesh" might be slang for during the Civil War? Really? 🤣
lol, I thought you were joking (I skipped around a lot on this horrible reaction vid, so missed the scene you were talking about), But even though I thought you were joking, it did seem plausible, given the woeful ignorance I saw in other parts of the reaction. So I went to the scene you talked about, and yep, Roxy said, "What union?" I was like, OMG. 🤣
You're basing all your comments on a 2024 mentality on a war that was fought over 150 years ago. Sentiments on race relations have changed drastically just in the past 50 years. Dessertion, or going awol, is still dealt with pretty harshly to this day. In WWII a deserter was executed, but usually they're given time in the brig or dishonorably discharged.
I had to shut this crappy reaction off at about the 37 minute mark. I honestly can believe I made it this far. I hadn't read any of the comments before I posted, and I actually came to this reaction after being really impressed with Roxys take on Pacific Rim.
A core reason they fought that way was the unwavering adherence to Napoleonic tactics - huge columns of men unleashing massive amounts of firepower to overwhelm the other side. Units that skirmished (i.e., broken ranks and utilizing cover) were usually just wiped out by calvary. Unfortunately, Civil War tactics woefully lagged behind _technological_ advances - something the generals just never seemed to grasp. So more accurate weapons turned already brutal battles into utter bloodbaths. It seems crazy to us now, but it was just matter-of-fact back then.
It also goes back to the revolutionary war. This type of warfare for armies was honorable. Any other type was looked down upon as dishonorable. Hit and run tactics were for militias or smaller units.
I rarely ever leave negative comments but this reaction might take the cake. I had to pause the video to even leave a comment. if i had to listen to another pointless joke i was unsubscribing. How do 2 people sit and watch a movie, a historical movie during BHM and talk, joke, admit to not knowing something but then talk as if they do. Not knowing history is one thing but to joke and not just watch and learn is another. This movie was shown to grade school students and they have/would show this movie more respect than you 2 have. Like watching 2 adults that need a teacher to tell them to be quiet. How did this even get posted?
I was watching their reaction, thinking, Wow, these people just don't get the point of the film or understand basic history, and I was thinking, I'm sure the comments will have given them a pass, but no! Well done, comment section!
It was honestly kind of infuriating to watch because of these two reactors. From not understanding why the Civil War was fought to what words means to the attitude that " well they were just mean" to the soldiers in order to make them fighters.
I am a civil war reenactor and I was an Army infantryman for 6 years. its maddening to see the lack of respect the reactors had for a lot of these scenes in this movie. Pretty disappointing @@BolofromAvlis
This was plain and simple one of the worst reactions that's ever been on this channel. Reel Rejects, regardless of the crew, are generally pretty good at their craft even when they might have a disagreeable position. However....wow........ this reaction was just bad. I thought the comment section was being hyperbolic going into the reaction but this reaction lived up to the outrage in the comment section. A very rare huge L for the Reel Rejects.
Maybe a hot take but after this I will not watch any more reactions featuring Roxy. Her reactions are literally the worst and this one was the breaking point. Why even continue to feature her on this channel.
100% AGREE. Roxy is just so annoying and acts like the smartest person in the room when she's clearly not. Anytime I see her on the thumbnail I skip no matter who she's reacting with.
Did Roxy really just say ww2 was better because they had better ways to die? Jesus Christ, I'm sorry but she's one of the most ignorant people reacting online these days
Truly disappointed in this reaction. I never expect people to know or understand everything about everything, but the constant derision (based on a lack of understanding) was pretty disrespectful.
Millennial children complain about military doctrine and training is so frustrating. The amount of ignorance from these two would take all day to explain to them. Her "edgy" humor is not funny just annoying. And seeing how he has no idea about this part of his own history is a disservice.
Anyone else agree with me that we need to see a response from The Reel rejects about how negatively this video was viewed by its audience due to the general disrespect ignorance of its reactors to this? Who all is with me give me some likes and see if they listened
I hope these two notice how many people almost universally pan this reaction. These two are completely brainwashed and unaware of the world in any other generation but this one. It is so sad and disturbing.
Holy crap, what a horrendous reaction. The fact that they haven't responded at all, to the nearly 100% dislike responses to this reaction, should tell everyone what they think of your feedback. You're just a dollar sign to them. Absolutely disgusting, they are.
The penalty for desertion during a time of war is death, any other punishment is a mercy. And any worthwhile training for combat has to be as harsh as it can be for it to matter when you actually get into the fight.
But he wasn’t deserting… he needed SHOES! So there’s your mercy not to mention if you have a regiment of runaway slaves and you are fighting against slavery…maybe not a great punishment🤡
@@amagriggs6009 And this incident was fictional and didn't actually happen, and wouldn't have happened, as flogging as a punishment was made illegal well before the civil war began.
@@amagriggs6009 They didn't know that, they were just doing to him what they would have done to any soldier. It wasn't good, but that is how times were. Grow up dumbass, and enjoy the times the men represented in this movie gave you.
Yeah, less than 15 minutes in, and I'm outta here. Just can't hack the disrespectful reactors. I see by the comments I'm not alone in that. This is almost sacrilegious. Like cracking jokes at a funeral about how funny the corpse looks. This movie, indeed this topic, their shared sacrifices, all deserve better. I'm off to find that, because it ain't here. Oh, and un-subbed, too.
Commenting on why some men saluted during the parade and some placed their hand over their heart. Only soldiers salute, civilians do not, and if you are a soldier but are not wearing a cap, the alternative is placing your hand over your heart. The same is done during the national anthem at sporting events. The only people that should be saluting are those that served and are wearing caps.
This movie is a masterpiece. But their reacting to it sucked, they know nothing, How TF did these awful reviewers get 1 million subs. They have no idea what they are seeing or how people acted for that period. It's like they are watching a foreign film. I have never seen anyone misunderstand this film this badly.
Unfortunately there are particular states that would ban this movie from being shown in history class. Ban it for being to woke, or CRT, or whatever. States that want to prohibit or at least belittle any example of racism in US history. smh
@@Fireduxz 🤣 The naïveté is so amusing. Dude, there's a comment below to this video calling this movie an exercise in "virtue signaling" for crying out loud. Anything that has the temerity to cite any racism in US history is labeled as "woke" or "CRT" or whatever other label MAGA come up with on that day. And BTW, this movie actually IS "woke" by the original use of the social commentary use of the term, which simply meant "awareness of racism in society and/or history". So this movie is "woke" by that use. And is the kind of movie ripe for being banned, just like hundreds of pieces of literature on racism have been.
@@Fireduxz You clearly don't know what "woke" ever meant. Sounds like you think anything "woke" is bad, therefore, you don't considerate Glory "woke" just because you like the film. 🤣 Any movie that deals with racism or other bigotries is "woke", regardless of whether you like the movie or not. DeSantis has already banned hundreds of books that deal with racism in US history, including books that lots of people liked. And he's passed the law that says any parent can object to any teachings about racism to get the work in question banned, and books have been banned by that law too. All a parent has to do is complain about Glory being "woke" or "CRT" or whatever, and it would be banned. I agree with you that it SHOULD never be banned, but the same could be said for most of the books DeSantis already banned for daring to talk of racism in US history.

this is based on the true story and turns out the way it did in history. shaw's parents said that they didn't want their son returned to boston to be put to rest because he'd have wanted to be buried with his men, that shows how much he had come to understand and care for his men.

The lack of understanding in this reaction is confusing. Really makes you question the education system that these two grew up in.
They definitely should've picked 2 different people to react to this.
Take the stick out of your ass
What "education system" ?
Im not sure why they laughed so much during this, very confusing for me. I haven't seen every reaction on the channel, but this is by far the worst and most disrespectful that I have seen.
i'm so glad i checked the comments first, I'm going to skip this one because I love this movie so much.
It will bother you, it was terrible. @@AbsoluteApril
I've probably watched 15 or so Glory reactions thru the year's, and know one was doing this much joking and laughing.
@@AbsoluteAprilyeah, I read many of the comments and figured I’d watch anyway. I barely got through five minutes.
The reactions should match the tone of the movie, you wouldn't be joking and laughing watching Schindler's List.
Flogging as a punishment in the US Army was banned in 1861
I can't believe you're watching Colonel Shaw being buried in a mass grave, and all you can think of to say is to joke about his hair.
They also joined at like 14-15.
Wow. That's not at all surprising actually. Many stories of young "kids" joining up during war time from various countries, not just in the US. Kids tried joining up at 16 to go to the trenches during WW1.@@Valkyrie1911
Yeah, its always weird how films depict historical wars with like...30+ year old actors.

I stopped watching. We are going to do history saying that White people did absolutely nothing.
Worst Reel Rejects reaction video.
@@tinmanbrigade7304 Yeah, this never happened. They put this in hear for "symbolism". Its a complete lie.

Exactly. The woke left exhibit a bigotry of low expectations.

RIP Andre Keith Braugher BTW, a fantastic actor.
Right? Like it’s a pivotal moment in the film because the sergeant major was so clearly correct.
This is also when Shaw realised they weren't pushing them enough to prepare them for the battle they will face. It's not all marching and he realised that. It's a great scene.

I saw this movie in middle school, but I fell asleep cuz I was a typical bored teenager. I watched it again in my twenties when I started to become a movie lover. It's just a matter of learning details and the intent of the message when the film was made. It's seriously like this is the first time they've ever heard there was a Civil War in America. My god.

Here Here!
Same, i wanted to write something similar, but it seems everyone is voicing their issues. How hard is it to understand this was 160 years ago. They made Shaw out to be a villain 🤦
The absolute worse Glory reaction, I wished i could mute Roxy
I did appreciate how obsessed they were with facial hair. Actually, no. It bugged the shit out me.
Wow, I had no idea our education system had gotten this bad.
Because education in US now is WOKE.
It is weird because the civil war is actually taught better now than in the past, and yet these two still know nothing about it
It is weird because the civil war is actually taught better now than in the past, and yet these two still know nothing about it
History class no longer teaches history.
Only soldiers and veterans salute. Civilians put their hands over their hearts
This is a true story and historical. The leaders like Matthew Broderick, etc. isn’t just in the movie for plot it’s what actually happened.
Such a lack of respect of who fought in this battle
I'm surprised they learned to read and speak growing up.
That is how ignorant they are.
At the very least, everyone needs to sit down for a meeting to discuss exactly what went wrong in this video and how do you prevent it from happening again.
so painful to watch these two bumble over basic concepts and history
yeah, kind of missed the point of nearly everything.
Bro, like why watch this movie? These millennials are just a lost cause.
YES! SOMEBODY SAID IT!!!!!! OMG
Great American education system.
One of the weakest ? Only one of the weakest......holy shit I’d hate to see the others.
@@Mike-ol7gt There are more of them that are embarrassing to watch
I ask myself the question, is it a problem of today's generation that they are not able to understand more complex movies or are they just jaded because they grew up with borderline stupid movies
Its this dumbass hate white people racist nonsense they teach in schools now of days. Absolute moronic behavior.
Are You Rejects going to apologize for making fun of U.S. soldiers dying for freedom?
You don't have to be a Civil War scholar to enjoy this movie. The world within the movie explains itself well enough... for those who care to pay attention. You would think that even the most obtuse and thick-headed citizen might have learned a bare minimum to be able to follow a movie like this, even if that learning was only by pure accident. Congrats on walking around in a sea of information and never getting wet.
Bruh, that last line is straight savage and right on.
@@ElTee842 bru they literally asked "wHaT uNiOn?"
@@holden_tld ok. What does that have to do with my comment though? I was discussing turning points in the civil war per OPs comment

Greg. This kind of content could end up undoing all the work you've done to build up your channel. 😢
I thing it's good to show just how clueless our younger unappreciated, disrespectful, naive, frail generations have become.
TIL that this country needs to do a better job at teaching history.
I taught history for 30 years, and my (public school in the Bronx) high schoolers all knew a helluva lot more about history than these two dim lightbulbs.
This channel should probably avoid reacting to historical movies. This was beyond awful.
Yep, I guess I'm old. That was like watching this movie with a pair of kids.
Nope- I’ve watched this with my kids. Unlike these two reactors, they understood the time period, the terminology, the seriousness and importance of these events, and had the appropriate emotional response to the ending. These two are just horrifying.
Elder Millennial here, born in 85, and we were taught this in school. It’s sad honestly to hear the commentary.
Exactly!!!
"But to not know Anything about the Civil War?? Not one thing? Not one shred of basic knowledge?" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I usually like all the reactions guys but yikes. Pretty much everyone else feels the same way. Lets take projects like Glory and show a little more tact & respect. Been a fan since the Ryan Right days, Greg. Lets do better gang.
Films like these are meant to be watched without unnecessary commentary
It's like you were just looking at the movie, not watching or digest it at all.
Amen.
I wish I could like this a thousand times. Completely idiotic. It’s kind of scary that these are presumably educated people.
This reaction tells me all I need to know about the education system.
More than likely they’re the ones who post memes about “school never taught us X…” when in fact they were the ones talking/goofing off/ignoring the lesson.
@@ElTee842this is the biggest thing. Anyone complaining about what they didn’t learn in school just didn’t care while they were in school
Really? 🤣
Shaw gives a speech about working together to restore the Union.
Roxy: "What Union"?
Sweet Jesus. These two should be ashamed of themselves.

I can't imagine what she say about "Whose the Axis and Allies"
@@koreancowboy42 I imagine Roxy's response would be something like, I'm a jew, blah blah blah, Axis who?
lol, I thought you were joking (I skipped around a lot on this horrible reaction vid, so missed the scene you were talking about), But even though I thought you were joking, it did seem plausible, given the woeful ignorance I saw in other parts of the reaction.
Longstreet was an early proponent of trench warfare, but it was considered ungentlemanly by both sides at the time.
Watching millennials try and understand this film is maddening. This is 7th grade history.
Thank you!
Totally agree.
Pretty disappointing

The ignorance displayed during this reaction was not becoming of the production quality… I truly expected more.
Denzel’s character picking up the flag at the end is still one of the 10 most powerful moments I’ve ever seen in a film
Courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is moving forward in spite of the fear.
Maybe a hot take but after this I will not watch any more reactions featuring Roxy. Her reactions are literally the worst and this one was the breaking point. Why even continue to feature her on this channel.
I'm not going to watch any more of this channel 🤬🤢🤮
Yeah that was one of the dumbest things I've ever heard in my life.
Truly disappointed in this reaction. I never expect people to know or understand everything about everything, but the constant derision (based on a lack of understanding) was pretty disrespectful.
Highly disappointed at your reaction to this film. This wasn't much in it that deserved laughter.
This is by the far the worst reaction I've ever seen to this amazing movie.

How can you understand the story and especially the subtext if you constantly talk over the dialogue? Why even watch the movie then?
Commenting on why some men saluted during the parade and some placed their hand over their heart. Only soldiers salute, civilians do not, and if you are a soldier but are not wearing a cap, the alternative is placing your hand over your heart. The same is done during the national anthem at sporting events. The only people that should be saluting are those that served and are wearing caps.

They have no idea what they are seeing or how people acted for that period. It's like they are watching a foreign film. I have never seen anyone misunderstand this film this badly.
A movie like this is meant to be shown in 8th grade history classes, to let students know how brutal the Civil War was.
Unfortunately there are particular states that would ban this movie from being shown in history class. Ban it for being to woke, or CRT, or whatever. States that want to prohibit or at least belittle any example of racism in US history. smh
This movie isn’t woke and no one sees it as such.
I made a reply but I realize that I just don’t care. This is not a woke movie and should never be banned.
@@Fireduxz You clearly don't know what "woke" ever meant. Sounds like you think anything "woke" is bad, therefore, you don't considerate Glory "woke" just because you like the film. 🤣
Any movie that deals with racism or other bigotries is "woke", regardless of whether you like the movie or not.
