I love when he said what he said I used to get so caught up in playing "fast" now I play from my heart and soul and my songs are so much better. You are who I listen too to get better at my Tenor Sax. I've got my sound down on Alto since I've played that for 24 years just finally moved to tenor and all I try to hear when I'm practicing is you sir. Thanks Kirk.
It's a pleasure to call Kirk my friend. He's an incredible gentleman and musician. One of my greatest moments when he invited me to come to his house in 2005. At the time, he was living in Nashville TN. As a fellow Alto, Sorpano and tenor saxes, having a killer tone, is crucial. Also I play the Jody Jazz mouthpieces.
Hey man I would love to send you a few of my Sax tracks to get your opinion on them. Been playing for 24 years on Alto and just recently switched to Tenor and had my first paying gig EVER last week playing a Duet with a singer "This is why I love you by Major". Let me know what I need to do to get these tracks over to you and maybe we can work one day on something. I play Piano, a little guitar and bass, sing, produce and audio engineer down in Fort Myers FL.
I have been playing (off and on) for 48 years. And I have heard a few saxophonist who play more notes than Kirk Whalum. But I can only count on one hand how many saxophonist have a sweeter tone and play with as much expression as Kirk Whalum. Oh. By the way. Kirk can cut it up with the best of them too. I've seen that video where he went toe to toe with Kenny Garrett on "Always There." Kirk showed up and showed out!!
He might be my fav current pro player today. I mean,, for those that don't know...Kirk played with for Whitney Houston for 7+ years. Imagine how many saxophonists WH and her people had to audition before singling out Kirk. Clearly some one like WH would be super picky. Has an amazing ear for good sound to have been such an unmatched singer. She heard something in Kirk no one else had/has. He plays like she sang.
@@jodyjazzofficial What an honour it is to receive such encouraging words from my best manufacturer of mouthpieces. Always aiming for the best and targeting a unique quality sound. Can't wait to be in a position to afford all of your best mouthpieces and products 😊🙏🏾
@@jodyjazzofficial Kirk's always great, (been following him for years) but that horn sucks. The Keilwerth was a perfect fit. But I'm not going to get in a pissing contest!
How do you write something like this this is so awesome, so much must be inside you to come out so beautiful, Just inspired is the only word I can come up with
2 days ago I bought one hr* 7* I use #3 select jazz d'addario before I used a Arnold brilhart 7* but I would like to sound like Kirk, i m from haiti,I playe compas music
Observation: Compared to the original album recording, Kirk's tone here sounds warmer and more open. Obviously the equipment and circumstances aren't the same, and the player himself has matured and evolved musically. Still, its an interesting observation.
I get what he's saying but find it unnecessary, music needs no explanation. He's almost suggesting that, "I know you all think this sucks because I am not playing fast, loud and high" but please understand that I am an artist and it's actually saying something. No need for that in my opinion, simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. I too have been playing for over forty years and love his sound, phrasing and artistry.
