- Rare footage of the 1972 World Karate Do Tournament in Paris, France.

In my late 20's (it seems like a little more than 20 years ago, because it was), I finally decided to get somewhat serious about my martial arts training.
I was in the International Karate Association. I got to travel a few times from Pasadena over to IKA headquarters in Glendale and train with Soke Kubota. And a few times, Shihan Tonny Tulleners would come to Pasadena.
Kubota, of course, was amazing--having devoted his entire life to karate.
Tulleners also was amazing. Of course a far more experienced martial artist than I, he was also almost 30 years older. He mopped the floor with me, and with others, and hardly broke a sweat. His comment involving Chuck Norris (who he beat several times on the pro circuit) were glowing, including something on the lines of "I [Tulleners] have actually been kicked by a mule, and being kicked by Norris is about the same thing."
Martial arts should always have a degree of control, but the martial arts are a contact sport. Sparring with your friend should not mean that you break ribs or a nose, but if you do not make some contact--and vice versa--you are not helping your training partner prepare for a real conflict.
As Soke Kubota would say, "little touch ok..."
Tonny fought against Norris 3times and he won all three point fights but that was early on when Norris was not in his prime. If Norris would have fought him in 1968 or so, he would have destroyed Tulluners. Keep in mind that Norris is a multiple black belt in BJJ. He would destroy Tulluners even now at the age of 82.
Looks great, always heard great things about Frank Smith
Thank you very much for posting!
No pads. No bouncing up and down like a jump rope contest. No flinging out of a technique then jumping around like an idiotic end zone dance. I love this. This is the way it should be. Nishiyama and Nakayama in the audience. The Golden Age of karate, before it got so Americanized.
agree but bouncing can help you to attack less telegraphed
look at elwyn hall, frank brennan ronnie cristopher george best... knockout with bouncing
@@goodbuy7556 You're up in the air and helpless. BTW, 3 IKA fighters in that group!
@@GosokuRyuYodan I changed my mind through 2 years, meanwhile I understood that karate is not a distance fighting but a grappling with striking like Iain Abernethy shows!
More old fight videos like this please!
A lot of great fighters, James yabe, Frank Smith, Yahara , Tanaka, Abe, Ida wow very nice
George Bird, Tonny Tulleners, John Ghelsen
Wow! Historic footage. I recognize a couple o the JKA fighters, Obata and Tanaka. Thanks for posting.
I am rereading Steve Arneil's book, Modern Karate, and this tourney is mentioned in the Forward.
De auto performance atleta auto nível👏👏👏
It looks more like dancing than like fighting.
The first figth is not in Paris. The others Yes !
Good Ol'Times when Karate practitioners used to hit each other for real.
Modern almost "no contact" rules has killed the discipline.
Oishi, abe, tanaka..
I forget the name of the young Japanese-Brazilian who won the individual championship --
Watanabe.
Where is Bruce Lee? I don't see him.
You will see him on the Kung Fu competitions or only on the movies where all the mouvements are pre arranged
He was in the Junior Competition.
Que luta horrível.
