As a R5C owner, you’re spot on with the battery grip. Thanks for telling the truth on that!!
Just to confirm, with the grip, I can record 8K full frame without the need of an external USB-C power bank?
@@pedzsan You can record everything except 8K 60.
So is there dummy battery can deliver 9v so i can record 8k 60p or only solution is power through type c
The problem with the battery grip is that it makes the setup too tall, which is not ideal for handheld video work. It's more handy to have a v-mount behind the camera to be able to have three points of contact at the shoulder or chest. In addition to this, the battery grip still doesn't unlock 8k 60p raw, while a power delivery v-mount will do that. I agree that the v-mount is not usable if you want to take photos though.
Yeah, that's why I said it's a hybrid set up not a cinema setup. You know because of the photos though
What kind battery do you need to be able to shoot 8k 60fps?
@@ignorantboxing external USB-C power or from a V mount battery
Great point! I went the power bank route and I almost regretted it
Nice video, I have the same setup except I’m using the EF 24-70 sigma w/ the ND adapter.
L shape hdmi. Best thing about the grip is there are no issues with aftermarket batteries. I have 2 oem and 6 aftermarket. Works perfect.
100%
Finally someone using the battery grip! All videos so far, at least which I have watched, were without it. I'm using the battery grip with 4 original batteries and a Anker III PD power bank and never have to change batteries during a day of shooting. Turn it off and PD will charge the batteries in the grip while changing locations or traveling. Only thing which would have been awesome to have would be a AA battery magazine to use Eneloop Pro 2500 mAh with. But I assume they don't have enough juice? Great video!!
So excited!!!!!!
Great content here, Luke. Agree that the battery grip solution has been ignored by most sources I’ve seen. We have a couple R5’s + grips and glad to hear the grips will work on R5C. I had been scared off from R5C due to concerns about power and AF - but I won’t need 8K 60fps very often lol. If the battery grip powers 4K 120 fps, especially off the SD card, I’m golden. Thanks for sharing your insight on this.
You’re welcome! 🙏🏻
Loving the R5C. Truly the perfect hybrid for me. Favorite feature is the Slow & Fast mode.
It’s great! Love that you can do it now with the SD card
Can the battery grip solve the auto focus problem when shooting 8k or I still need to plug a battey bank?
It does not fix 8k 60fps in RAW, 8k 24fps does work with the lens tho with the battery grip
@@LukeAsper thanks
@@LukeAsper oh, one more question, China canon webside says 5C not work with 600EXⅡ-RT flash light, have you try it for photo? especially for Flat-Pulse mode?
It’s surprising the lack of coverage the battery grip has gotten for the r5c. I got mine a week or so ago and havnt taken it off. It’s also comes in clutch when clients want portrait orientation videos. Something which would be a complete pain with v-mounts.
I agree i don’t know why more people don’t cover it! It’s fantastic
what video fluid head are you using for the small rig plate compatibility?
I am a hybrid shooter who does photo and video at the same time. So how do you do OCF with that rig? Looks more like a video rig than a hybrid rig
thanks for this video! I've recently purchased the battery grip and the smallrig battery grip cage rather than going the v-mount option, because of your information. Can't wait to test it all out.
Hi Luke!
That's pretty annoying that you can record 120fps/100fps on sd card, but you can't dual record it on 2 cards...
I have to buy Atomos Ninja V+ to have backup for 100fps.
Or maybe I don't know how to do it?
I have never been in a situation where I would need to be doing that so I would not know.
I don’t even use the grip. $40 aftermarket batteries last 60-65 minutes. It’s really no bother to switch batteries. People find the most bizarre shit to complain about. This camera is a true hybrids dream come true.
Yup that’s what I said in the video bud 👍
@@LukeAsper Oh, you said “bizarre shit”? 🤓
Wait a second hahah you were the one who filmed for cindi’s deli? They’re family friends of mine and you did an Awesome job bro! What a small world. Btw I got my r5 stolen and just picked up an r5c. Keep the videos coming!
Yes that was me! And that sucks but at least you have the better camera now IMO 👀
Great video brotha! R5C is a little beast!
It’s so good!
How does the battery grip fit on the gimbal? Does it restrict certain movements?
I was wondering the same thing. It does get heavy. I’ll try this set up I got the ronin rs2
Of course the battery grip will double your runtime doubling 30 minutes (in 4K 60p) to 1 hour isn’t very long considering the extra bulk/weight it’s adding to the camera.
I initially bought grips for all my R5Cs however a tiny FXLION one will run the camera (in 4K 60) three times as long as a double battery in a grip.
Love that
There’s certainly the issue of “where” to mount the battery. Because I’m not much of a camera rig type of shooter I opted to mount it to the tripod handle with a short lead to the USB-C port.
One of the best aspects of this approach is the power redundancy. Accidentally snag/pull the cord and the camera automatically switches back to internal (LP-E6NH) battery power without missing a frame of recording. You can even eject your internal battery while recording.
When you power the camera down and leave the external source connected it’ll automatically charge and top off your internal battery.
It really is a slick solution. However the battery grip does make the camera way nicer to hold. If I was a photographer they would be a must-buy.
Luke, thanks for this.... the battery grip is a helpful suggestion.
No problem! 🙌🏻
Thanks for doing this video. I’m planning on getting a R5C with the battery grip. Is there a top mount monitor that is touch sensitive for changing focus if the camera is in a low position? Is that even possible?
Haha I got my battery grip even before the R5C arrived! Totally agree - it gives it a nice balance and very comfortable to hold while shooting handheld. My 3rd point of contact is my EYE though- so I have to flip the handle the other direction to keep from SMH
Nice!!!
THe last frame in the video shows a different top handle than you have linked. which one is the right one? :o
THIS VIDEO WAS SO HELPFUL BROTHER 👍 HOW LONG DOES 2 BATTERIES LAST IN VIDEO MODE WHEN YOUR BATTERIES ARE ON GRIP ?
shooting 4k at 23.973fps i can get up to 130 mins of battery
Very interesting about the grip. Another video said it was unloved. I have a power bank that I plan to use. I do some astrophotography and with the R5, one battery didn’t make it through the night. But, I really wasn’t looking forward to hanging a power bank off the camera just to do 8K. I may end up trying it and see. I need to rethink some things.
Great stuff! I like how you hammer home how this is a hybrid camera, and so must be able to be used as such, fairly quickly (ie. not with a hard-to-remove rig).
Does that Smallrig plate not have the locking pin that the DJI plate has? I have the Black Mamba R5 cage, which is advertised as being usable with the RS2 as it has a rail on the bottom, but I've got to take out the little locking pin from the RS2 first to make it fit.
The Plate is made by Smallrig for even that Mamba cage. the cage does not work on the OEM plate that comes with the RS2
R5C is king!
Let’s go!!!!
Nice video thanks for sharing your experience and set up for canon r5c
My question is about the body weather seal is it matching R5 as canon claimed regardless the fan intake and exhaust
Happy B-Day.
Thank you so much!!
This is great but I wish you had footage of installing and removing the pieces while you're mentioning them so we can get visual examples of what you're describing.
is it possible to connect a v mount battery to the camera with the battery grip?
yes, the only way the V mount can work tho is if its USB-C to USB-C to the side of the camera. so its not like the old way of plugging a dummy battery in if that makes sense
Epic rig broski!
Thanks man!!!!
What type of PC are you editing on? I'm trying to get up a good workflow for raw lt in premier. I just figured out how to grade C log 3 lol I'm no colorist.
I use a M1 Macbook Pro and DaVinci Resolve
@@LukeAsper yeah it seems like DaVinci resolve is much Plus taxing and dependent on your hardware. Still using premiere but more and more thinking of switching. Although now I'm using Lightroom and Photoshop so much. I might as well stay with Adobe.
12:37 Hi Luke, I just want to be clear about this, you are saying you can shoot at 4K, 120fps with just a regular SD card?
Yes that is correct. I use a V90 card also and it works
@@LukeAsper Do you find you have time delays when it writes to the SD card or is it as smooth as with the CF Express Type B card?
@@ericmcclean558 it is smooth
@@ericmcclean558 it’s the same way the C70 does it to SD cards
This is super informative Luke, thanks. Having already had the R6, I've rigged my R5C out with suggestions from Caleb -DSLRVideoShooter. This way i primarily use the R5C for video, but can pretty quickly disassemble to turn it into photo cam (1-2mins). If i'm super pressed for time i'll just use the R6 on a gimbal, or for photos. If i did just have the one cam i'd certainly just be going with your suggestions here. Not sure who is consistently using 8K Raw 60p.
So with the battery grip I can shoot 8k 60p?
Yeah with a Manuel lens tho. Do you need to shoot 8k 60 often?
@@LukeAsper No, I have mine backorded, but I just get a terrabyte SFExpress card might as well shoot 8k 60p all the time XD
Hi Luke. How are you able to shoot raw with the battery grip? I tried and it says battery insufficient to drive the lens
You must have been trying to shoot in 8k 60. I shot in 8k 24 and it worked fine.
@@LukeAsper Nope just at 8K 25p RAW. Were you shooting at RAW or MP4?
@@D_L_J_83 you can shoot 8k 24fps RAW and have the lens work.
Do you récord 4k in the ninja V or not???
No need to anymore. If I do it’s as a safety
@@LukeAsper thankyou my friend!!!
