  • Imagine living in a foreign country where you are advising and coordinating 600 law enforcement and military personnel from various organizations, all of whom are responsible for pursuing the world’s wealthiest and most violent criminal and his organization. Now, imagine performing those duties with a $300,000 bounty on your head. That was the life lived by Steve Murphy and Javier Peña, the two now-retired DEA Special Agents responsible for the downfall and capture of the infamous drug cartel leader, Pablo Escobar.
On Friday, November 22nd, Murphy and Peña join the Forum Club of the Palm Beaches for a noon event at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, where they provide a behind-the-scenes look at how they brought down Escobar in the largest, most complex, multi-national, and high profile investigation of the time. They discuss the life-threatening challenges they faced and the innovative strategies they employed to successfully end Escobar’s reign of terror. In addition, they discuss today’s opioid crisis, bringing their invaluable experience on the front lines of the war on drugs over the last 30 years.
Murphy and Peña consult on Netflix’s Narcos and Drug Lords, National Geographic’s Facing Escobar, and the History Channel’s Kingpins, all of which were inspired by their story and on which they served as subject matter experts. They have also authored the book, MANHUNTERS - based on their firsthand experiences and the DEA’s recently de-classified files on the search for Escobar. Copies of their book was available for pre-order on the Forum Club’s website and was available for purchase at the event thanks to a partnership with the Palm Beach Bookstore.

It’s so heart warming to see heroes finally tell their stories. Not only they lived it, they literally saved a whole country along with their team. Both Colombians and Americans. Thank you so much for your sacrifice and setting up an unlimited example!

The reason why Pablo was so like able in the show at that times was because of the actor Wagner Moura. If you see his interviewers the dude has charisma.

Steve and javier have been very candid in their speeches, it is commendable, however i would have liked to ask them about the conflicts between americas own internal agencies (CIA and DEA) as depicted in the series, it appears to be fictionalized but if there was a CIA Bill shipping arms to paramilitary forces they were not really contributing to their efforts of a lasting peace in Colombia, i loved Juan Pablo Angel as a footballer growing up, and the documentaries on Colombia show its a beautiful country, almost feels like it is crafted by god...i love the country and i hope to visit it one day when all the turmoil is over.

I feel like Narcos still glamorized Pablo. The show didn't fully show what a monster he actually was.

Pablo is clearly a bad guy in the series, but as Narcos went on, the Cali cartel was softened even more and by the end of Narcos Mexico they were all but glorifying the bosses , which I found really annoying.

These guys are true heroes and they will deny it. But they give the right people the credit and tell the truth about who actually took Pablo. They could easily take credit for it all but they use their platform to tell the truth.

I wish there was a chance to hear their story too like these 2 dudes cuz it seems its just them who really got it to themselves to make fame and money out of it.
