I mean Disney was always that even in its golden years. The problem was in 2023 Disney wasn't just Disney the animator. It was Disney the studio that owned or bought out a good chunk of media companies at a time when the very IP-driven culture people craved a decade ago was running out of steam. So that's not exactly Disney's fault, it just became the posterchild for outrage at this culture of our own creation.

    • @DukeSkylocker
      @DukeSkylocker 3 месяца назад +289

I mean, Walt Disney was so mad at animators asking for decent wages that he had Dumbo basically take the piss out of them (hence, the sequence with the clowns that get drunk and then march off singing "we're going to ask the big boss for a raise". As bad as Bob Iger is, I can't imagine him doing something so petty) so it's not like they ever had a reputation for treating their employees well.

I wanted to hate him going into my first watching of the movie, but the more I watch it, the more I can see he's not the actual villain. He's actually just a human with flaws and undiagnosed mental disorders. Not only is it demonizing mental illness, but it's also enforcing the stigma that men shouldn't show any kind of weakness. That men aren't allowed to have bad days or show any emotions, they're just supposed to 'man up'. And I just can't hate someone who is literally just acting like a human being. As someone who is married to someone who has panic attacks almost all day, everyday, I could literally see the signs that he was becoming overwhelmed and starting to have anxiety because of how selfish his people were. They weren't focused on their safety, but their own wants and needs. Poor Magnifico just wants to protect his people as a king should, and he's turned into the villain, even though they made this character sympathetic and relatable.

Because everyone was so focused on their own happiness, no one was willing to take on his role. He knew someone self-centered could abuse this power and start granting wishes carelessly for themselves or others, causing chaos. That's why he was disappointed over and over again when his apprentices only wanted to get close to him to get personal favors. They didn't care about the common good, only about themselves. Asha was the most shameless one, doing it on day one.
He could've used his powers for ANYTHING, yet his only focus was to keep peace in Rosas, so no one had to suffer like he did. And of course, he went crazy when some kid started trampling over his life's work as a temper tantrum, thinking they knew better. Because their grandpa (WHO WAS OLDER THAN THE KING AND PROBABLY CHOOSE TO MOVE IN) couldn't learn how to play the guitar. Scratch that, he wanted people to like what he played and feel inspired by what he played. Imagine having that power over people, that's actually really dangerous.

The breaking point was when Asha brought a literal star to break the order of things. So he kinda went, “F it, if Rosas gets ruined, might as well be by me. After all, who else deserves it, but me?”

King Magnifico is the perfect example of someone with good will and intentions that eventually became disillusioned by the world and the people. Added to that, his past traumas made him a bit too paranoid and controlling, eventually transforming him into what he sought to destroy.
He would've been an amazing character to explore, and about how one person carrying such responsibility gets affected. But Disney fumbled HARD.

From someone who has not only dealt with a multitude of losses, but who has also faced most of them before I was even a teenager....I wish more movies would touch on grief in a real way. Not just sweeping it under the rug or slapping the Five Stages of Grief on it (don't even get me started on how inaccurate the stages are btw), but a story that isn't afraid to talk about loss and face it in a real way to help kids cope. In my personal opinion, the reason Asha lacks a character arc is because the team originally wrote Wish as a love story. The wishing star is supposed to be a star boy, and Asha's love interest. Asha and the star boy are soul mates; it was mentioned that they had an emotional journey. The star boy was said to be inspired by Peter Pan with a Mickey Mouse charm. I heard that the main conflict that Asha is supposed to face is something related to the Star Boy sacrifice or something, and King Magnifico's wife is supposed to be a villain too; they're supposed to be a villain power couple.

I think Disney just needs some new perspectives… a LOT of Disney artists are taught to draw a very very specific way, animate a specific way… story tell a specific way. A lot go to the exact same schools.
This movie to me feels like the ultimate culmination of that idea. Most people talk about the music being lame, or how the main character is sooo goofy silly girl like Rapunzel… but what stands out most to me is how it’s animated.
Not necessarily visually in design but more so how the characters actually MOVE and their facial expressions. You start to get a sense that there’s maybe 5 people at Disney in charge of actually coming up with mannerisms and expressions… so inevitably it feels like 5 actors are playing every character in the movie, in all of the movies.
Like there are mannerisms this protag does that I’ve seen done very similarly in recent movies and I’m like “oh so so and so was in charge of how this character moves AND Mirabel from Encanto”
In my opinion it leads all of the characters to feel samey in more than just personality but physicality.

It would be insanely irresponsible to grant everyone's wishes. They could have gone for a "this is my responsibility" etc and how Asha learns from it and grows as a person. They could have gone another way, like "you don't have to hold on to your past and one single wish/idea/desire", and learning to have different wishes and desires as they live and grow older. Little does he know, absorbing the energy of wishes, especially bad ones, makes you turn evil. He never realizes this, and by the movie’s climax he’s completely lost it.

If he was lured into corruption by a genuine desire to good, and she was a party to/witness to his descent into madness but ultimately chose to oppose him, it would have made for more compelling storylines for both of them.
Since it's a kid's movie, the ending might then be a bit too tragic but say, Instead of the stupid song at the end and Asha becoming the new wish granter, the people of Rosas all wish to free their King from evil and they go on as before but with a humbled, more receptive King and a more informed populace.

Someone in the comments made a good point by saying that when they had the Lion King soundtrack playing, their sibling asked to skip Scar’s song “Be Prepared” because it always scared him. That’s what a villain song should do. Even Scar’s design is creepy. You have Poor Unfortunate Souls, Mother Knows Best, Hellfire, Friends on the Other Side. Asha could have been the voice of pragmatism while all the city is in chaos due to their wishes being fulfilled one after the other. This song matchs the vibe. He’s the leader of a kingdom. No competent leader would put himself in positions where he can lose his power. Imagine if the president of a country was constantly doing stupid things to get himself impeached. There’s actually a deleted scene where he eats wishes to become a hulking, brutish monster and reveals he never cared about the people’s wishes, even snacking on them at times to get power.
I think the issue was that Disney wanted a complex antagonist, but the Disney villains of the past owned their villainy and that was wonderful to watch. They were all power hungry madmen with no regard for anything but themselves. But trying to make Magnifico complex just makes him confusing. If they’d kept the pretense that he pretends to care to hold onto power but steadily becomes more unhinged as time goes on, that’d be more compelling for a villain.

    • @saddesklunch2544
      @saddesklunch2544 3 месяца назад +22

Personally, I think I would’ve had him be the same until he crushes the first wish. He gets such a rush from doing it that he immediately becomes addicted and tries to keep riding that high. For the rest of the movie, everything he does is to hold onto the wishes so he can crush them. Maybe near the end he starts trying to take the wishes of everyone, not just the adults, so he can feed his addiction. And instead of him getting locked in the mirror, Asha’s able to talk him down and get him to give everyone’s wishes back (the ones that are left, at least) and get help.
This would allow the Queen to be good (she just wants to help her unwell husband), and explain the King’s sudden heel turn out of nowhere. It also fits with the modern Disney theme of no one person being the villain, but rather an idea (Magnifico’s not the problem here, it’s his addiction). Only issues I see are that it muddles the almost-an-allegory of the wishes being childhood dreams. We may also need to delete some earlier scenes to fit that thread in in a reasonable amount of time. There’s also the fact that I came up with this off the top of my head when Alex played the wish crushing scene, so it likely has a number of holes in it.
No idea how to fix the rest of the movie though, as I have not seen it.

We were getting multiple movies almost every year for a while it felt like, it's a lot of material to burn through in a short amount of time. This movie probably should have had more time to be worked on but they had to rush out a movie for the anniversary of Disney because like I said, they pushed out too many movies in a short span of time. Someone else made a comment that Encanto should have been released for the anniversary movie instead of this and I honestly agree. Encanto was very well received overall, and well produced. I haven't watched the movie myself, and quite frankly after Alex talking about it, I don't see any reason to either. Which... that's kind of a depressing mindset to have when Disney was a part of your childhood. 100 years anniversary? It has ALL the potential to bring those older generations back together in one-sitting. If just they had done something memorable.
I totally agree that the premise actually could've been really interesting. I can just imagine it:
A kingdom is built on wishes; the wishes are taken from the people as a metaphor for them growing up. A film premise that COULD reflect how those generations in the real world(the viewers) have grown up over the past 100 years. But as the movie progresses, the characters learn to reunite with their wishes, learning the valuable lesson that.
    a) wishes can't be taken from us. Our wishes(the viewers' childhood dreams) remain valid as grownups. It's alright to be a kid.
    or
    b) wishes don't need to be fulfilled by a fairy, going to Neverland... or having a king fulfill them. As a grownup, you can still live your dreams or try to, at least. Because grownups aren't hallow baby machines. They're still people, but people who have to adjust because they no longer have the freedom that children have.
And, rather than portraying the king as a stereotypical antagonist driven by cliché motives of world domination and power, the film could introduce a nuanced perspective. He had a wish, too, which was to make the world a better place. He could be an example of an adult who tries to fulfill their genuine dream but fails because... Again, it's a dream. Wistful and innocent thinking doesn't make the dream less valid. It's a bittersweet reality that while dreams may not materialize in their entirety, the journey toward them holds intrinsic value, encouraging individuals to persist in their pursuit in their dreams, regardless of the final end result.
That's how I wish Disney had made their 100th anniversary movie. Something with meaning.

Disney is never making 2D animated movies anymore, Wish was never going to be 2D, those were just rumors. When disney transitioned from 2D to 3D, they fired all their 2D animators and got new software and materials. Even if they want to go back, they can’t. Anyway, their animation isnt the problem in most of their movies, Wish just looked horrible because of rushed production and trying out a completely different style. Its usually the writing thats the problem, look at wreck it ralph 2 and frozen 2. both of which everyone hated.

I’m glad to hear your no biased opinions/views.
Other people keep whining and moaning about how the King wasn’t the bad guy. And that *may* be true *BUT* he was wrong here.
It’s one thing to not grant wish but to keep them from someone is wrong. Whether they succeed or fail isn’t up to others to decide, it’s up to the one who wishes.
Like Optimus Prime said “They deserve to chose that for themselves.”
Not everyone has the same will despite being alive and having feelings, just like how not everyone has the desire to be built and buff despite us all being human and technically capable of the same thing. Or even if not especially just like how a parent tries to dictate their child to follow in the same footsteps, or worse try to get them to quit the same goal they quit on some “if couldn’t do it then you can’t either” bs. Others don’t get to decide that, only you do.
Is he a villain, no, but he isn’t right either.
This means of taking away the difficulties and substituting bliss is no different than being dependent or manipulated by drugs. There’s no substance because it’s not real or true. You can only become a happier person by growing around and out of our negative or difficult aspects; not by carving them out.
Now if he was filtering out good wishes from bad wishes then that’s one thing, but to stifle all wishes is wrong, it’s toxic helicopter parenting on a spiritual level.
Furthermore one’s wish and the intention behind that wish is what makes everyone who they are, good or bad. And you can’t lobotomies bad/evil within others, only purify it or eliminate it. And it’s something that they have to chose and do for themselves.
I’ll agree that (until later) the king wasn’t a monster, but he’s not the hero either, nor should his decision be praised or shunned. Just like how you don’t throttle a toddler for breaking a vase or making a mistake, you talk it over with them and become better than before.
It pains me to hear so many think that he’s right. 😔

12:29 Funny thing is that the movie was supposed to have a love story but the scrapped it. It was supposed to be between Asha and Star Boy (who got changed to being just Star in the final movie) AND get this, WE COULD’VE HAD OUR FIRST EVER VILLAIN COUPLE FOR DISNEY. ARE. YOU. KIDDING. ME.👏🏻👏🏻 Disney REALLY screwed up on this movie. The reason I think they scrapped it was because they’re too scared of taking risks and only want to have independent powerful girlbosses in every movie now. Sad to see Disney change and screw up THIS badly.

I will admit that I enjoy the movie enough (yeah I know, hot take), but I won’t even deny that they really should’ve done that, or at least have Amaya also be evil to have the villain couple cause then the movie really could’ve stood out

@@LucasHopkins2006 I also enjoyed the movie when I first watched it. (Probably for the nostalgia factor but, meh) I think I would still enjoy it if I watched again, but there would be that lingering disappointment of what it could’ve been and what we got instead.

I think the star boy would have been interesting but I’m also glad they used Star to show not tell. As for the villain couple, it could have worked but it would have had to be more of an evil stepmother situation. I can’t see it any other way other than manipulation from one. At least in the way they structured it
