    • @tardifan
      @tardifan 5 месяцев назад +51

      The official set was desagned by a team of engineers with the ability to create new pieces out of the blue. The Brickvault set (which ftr came out two years before the official set) was designed by a fan with only access to Lego pieces that existed at that point. It would honestly be pretty embarassing to Lego if this wasn't the case.

    I think it would have worked much better as a product in committing to the Harkonnen shape tbh, as it prevents it from being seen as "obsolete" thanks to the official set

      I agree on the Harkonnen shape and might actually try to relocate the wings, to a 6 wing design. But you have to keep in mind, that the BV model is a fan model, two years older than the official LEGO set and at that time it was not to be expected that LEGO would ever commit to this franchise / model at all.

    Lego undeniably did the proportions and functionality better, but as for capturing the Ornithopter's detail, I'm not sure there is a clear winner. Neither quite replicate the geometry of dorsal plating and tail boom silhouette correctly (and there are lego parts the sets could have use to which they do not). What I think would be best would be a model with the Lego Cockpit, BV body, and maybe just a new tail with more snot parts on it to make that fine taper it has in the film.

    IMO, the official Lego version wins on functionality of the wings and overall build quality - plus they are able to make new pieces to suit their needs. However, I bought the plans, and then made the Bricklink version last year and was very pleased with the overall detailing - some of which is more accurate than the Lego Co version - e.g. rear thruster vents, opening rear door, more main cabin room.
    Remember, also, that Lego produced the 'Royal Atriedes' version, and there were at least 3 versions in the first film. At some point I will take parts from the Lego Co version and update the Bricklink version - taking the best of both.

    I also have both. Bought the BrickVault model when it came out shortly after the first film and the official Lego model the day it released. (I'm an almost lifelong Dune fan) For me there is a clear winner: the official Lego set. Yes the interior is non existent and the cockpit interior isn't accurate. But it's a small tradeoff for a far more impressive looking and far sturdier model. The BrickVault set still looks great I think but it will break as soon as you so much as touch it. And don't even think about folding in the wings. Besides tedious the chance you will end up breaking something is almost guaranteed. By comparison the Lego model you can easily lift, the wing folding is super fluid and feels amazing. Same with the landing gear. Finally I will say while both were a lot of fun to build the official Lego set definitely takes the cake here for me. Building it was a real challenge and seeing all the mechanisms finally come together was so satisfying. It uses more advanced techniques, takes longer to build and overall is just more of a real challenge even for an experienced builder like myself.
    There are however reasons why the BrickVault might be the better option for you though. Like I said the official set uses A LOT of technic and if that isn't your jam or you are not an experienced Lego builder the BrickVault set might be the better option since the official set might just be endlessly frustrating instead of a fun challenge. Also, and I know Im contradicting the video here, the difference in price, for me at least, was significant. The BrickVault set cost me 85 euros including instructions while the official set cost me 165 euros. Almost double the price. For me it was absolutely worth it and the official set is considerably bigger with more pieces. But it's undeniable it is also considerably more expensive so for a more budget friendly alternative I do think the BrickVault Ornithopter is a very good option.
    Personally I love both. The BrickVault set was my first Lego Ornithopter and building was a magical experience. But yeah the Lego set imo is just better in almost every way and like the OP, if I had to choose which one to keep it would be the Lego set and I wouldn't think twice about it.
    Hope anyone found this useful as a sort of second opinion from someone who also owns both sets.

    I tweaked mine brick vault version with builder wings, which I extended in matter of both length and width and it adds a lot, build looks majestic. But it came ate price of heavy wings so I added join clips to make them more staple. Official set is very nice too, but it is hard to compare when it is made by someone who has access to movie set pieces and custom build is made by eye meassure only.

    If they were priced similarly I would still choose the Lego model even though I'm more interested in display than play. The play features are really cool but I don't see myself using them much, so it's not the most obvious choice but on the other hand I wouldn't be using the interior much either.
    It's mostly about overall looks and the Brick Vault model is just not as polished. The clinchers for me are the cockpit shaping and to a lesser degree the tail.

    There were lots of spots on the official set where there are a ton of Technic parts (mainly all of the unused holes) that could have been covered up using plates and slopes to give it more of a finished look. Then again, some people like the Technic aesthetic and the set is quite popular so who am I to judge? Personally if I bought it I would just cover up as much as I could myself while stil retaining the awsome functional element of the set.

    Accuracy is always something thats difficult to achieve down to being 100% with a Lego model without sacrificing structural quality.
    I do think i agree on the official lego set being the winner here. Additionally, when i built the set, i had made sure to gather up enough parts from my collection to replace all the exposed red, yellow and blue pieces with exclusively black and light grey colored counterparts of the same pieces for a more realistic color pattern. Of course, all the inner mechanism parts, like the white linkage arms raising and lowering the ramp got to remain as they were, given i dont have pieces in good enough condition to replace them.
    Although, i personally have experienced a bit of a flaw with the set. The dark grey 2x3 plate right behind the wing flap trigger is a bit of a oversight, given it keeps getting pushed loose by the trigger. I might try and redesign the frame there to make a little more room for the trigger so it doesn`t push the plate loose.

    I may have a more unbiased opinion just _because_ I've never read the books or saw the movies.
    I'm just looking at them as two Lego models trying to look the same.
    The official Lego model looks very polished, even if you didn't know what it should look like.
    It's clear to see that a lot of thought went into the design.
    Personally I just love the blend of SF with technical stuff, but I appreciate that that's not everyone's cup of tea.
    I don't really _mind_ the colored spots but it would have been neater all round if they stuck with black or grey. Still, it doesn't bother me. Dune fans will probably disagree, and as fans they do have a point.
    That other model though...
    The other one looks like it's made out of several parts from other sets that were lying around.
    If the latter one was cobbled together by an enthousiastic 12 year old I'd give him or her a prize because for something that is made out of spare parts it looks awesome. But not for an expensive set. I'd expect more for that kind of money.
    The official Lego model is just _better_ in my opinion.
    Perhaps I should read the books and watch the movies and then come back here, but for now, overall, the official Lego model wins this round.

    • @tardifan
      @tardifan 5 месяцев назад +2

      First of all as someone who has built both models: I *highly* doubt a 12 yo could design something as intricate and complex as the BrickVault Ornithopter. Second it is worth noting that Brickvault is not a company like Lego. What they do is they take Fan designed sets (like the Ornithopter) and release instructions guides for them as well as a parts list. What they charge for is *just* the instruction guide. The rest of the cost is the parts you have to buy yourself on Bricklink. But they do not receive a single cent of that. In fact you could just buy the instruction guide and never built the actual thing. That wouldn't make a difference to them.
      The other thing that is worth noting is that it looks like it's made of spare paerts from other sets that were lying around *because it is* The Brickvault Ornithopter came out *two whole years* before the official set and for they offical set they invented a whole bunch of new pieces that LITTERALLY DIDN'T EXIST YET when the Brickvault set came out.
      This is a fan whose design got picked up by Brickvault who charged (imo) pretty reasonable price for the instruction guide. And I'm super glad they did because back when that set came out there was never a guarantee that an offical Lego set would surface. So it was either that or design your own Ornithopter and honestly, I doubt I could have done as great a job as Moko (the designer of the Brickvault set)
      Yes I agree, the offical set is better. I had more fun building it, it's sturdier and it looks more impressive. But also were comparing a team of professional designers with the ability to create new parts out of the blue vs one normal Lego fan who had to make do with what Lego had on offer at the time.

    In my opinion the official model just has two cons. First the colored pins and bricks. Why, Lego? Why? I guess that can be fixed by everybody himself. The second thing is all those open ... how do you call those nupsies on top of the bricks where you put other bricks on top? The inofficial model uses many tiles to cover those parts and makes the whole model much much smoother. But I guess that also could be fixed with some additional tiles. So, yes I would also prefer the Lego model. Finally, a word about the cockpits. While the inofficial one may not be acurate, I think it looks better than the original. I like that bulky design.

    • @tardifan
      @tardifan 5 месяцев назад

      As someone who has built the BV set (looking at it right now in fact) I can say it does not look lacklustre in the slightest. It is fewer pieces than the official set and it could have been bigger (though it's honestly not *that* much smaller) but making it 5.000 piece would be utterly ridiculous. Especially if you want to keep it minifig size.
      With regards to the pieces. This is literally impossible given how Brickvault works. They are not a competitor to Lego, they take fan designs and in collaboration with the designer make instruction guides for that design and sell them for a modest price (allong with a parts list you can upload to Brickvault) all of their design consists of 100% official Lego pieces. So the reverse is actually true. Because the BV Ornithopter design came out two years before the official one there were less pieces available to use because they invented a bunch of new pieces for the official Lego set.

      Meng Models make both the Harkonnen and Atreides versions as well as a spice crawler. The 'thopters are about 1/144 scale. Depending on where you are in the world you should be able to find them at your LHS otherwise eBay, Amazon, Hobbyeasy, Luckymodel, etc. Cheers 👍

    That's not something you can just type out.

    • @harrasika

      Same as you; copied it from the internet. These all are symbols used in math

    • @lucahermann3040
      @lucahermann3040 5 месяцев назад

      @@harrasika No, while I used symbols from set theory to create the font, the symbols in the video title seem to be slightly different, at least the ones for D and E.
      In set theory there's no symbol for a subset with a dash, so I had to either spell it ⊃∪∩∈ using the element symbol or ⊃∪∩⪽ using subset with dot.
      Not sure if the ∪ and ∩ are the same, but the ⊃ also definitely looks different.

      @@Emperor_mtn_Dew I actually have an answer for that. The techic axles are color coded based on the amount of friction they can handle. This is why the set uses a number of red and blue axles and why I would advise against replacing them with differently colored pieces. (although I'm not sure how bad the damage would be or how long it would take to manifest)
