I didn’t know this until I did some research, but after Hurrem, or any woman, married the sultan and became Haseki Sultan, she would be the highest ranking woman after the Valide. Meaning the sultan’s sisters, Hatice and Shah and Fatma and Beyhan, all would have had to bow to her. I was surprised that being a blood member of dynasty didn’t rank you above the sultan’s wife, but I guess it’s the same as Western cultures. If your brother is the king and you’re a princess, you would bow and pay the appropriate respect to his wife and queen. The show doesn’t represent that and I’ve always found that interesting. I also found it interesting that Mihrimah would bow to her aunts even though they were technically of the same rank (to me at least). Like Hatice and Mihrimah were both daughters of sultans, so the younger wouldn’t need to bow in my opinion. I don’t know if that’s how things actually went back then or that’s how the writers just wanted to do things.

There seems to be some confusion with the harem ranking system and the hierarchy that it contained by a few uninformed individuals so here....(this is for the era of the sultanate of women to be clear)
Valide Sultan: the mother of the sultan, she oversaw the harem and was the highest-ranking woman in the empire
Haseki Sultan: the favourite consort. She was either the mother of the eldest son (like Emetullah Rabia Gülnüş, Nurbanu and Safiye) or just the most beloved consort of the sultan (like Hürrem, Kösem and Rabia). She usually had several children because with her the sultan did not follow the one mother-one son rule

I didn’t know this until I did some research, but after Hurrem, or any woman, married the sultan and became Haseki Sultan, she would be the highest ranking woman after the Valide. Meaning the sultan’s sisters, Hatice and Shah and Fatma and Beyhan, all would have had to bow to her.
I was surprised that being a blood member of dynasty didn’t rank you above the sultan’s wife, but I guess it’s the same as Western cultures. If your brother is the king and you’re a princess, you would bow and pay the appropriate respect to his wife and queen.
The show doesn’t represent that and I’ve always found that interesting. I also found it interesting that Mihrimah would bow to her aunts even though they were technically of the same rank (to me at least). Like Hatice and Mihrimah were both daughters of sultans, so the younger wouldn’t need to bow in my opinion. I don’t know if that’s how things actually went back then or that’s how the writers just wanted to do things.
