Guchiri recently announced in a tweet in his private account (which i am oh so honored to follow as he no longer allows new followers) that mene never committed s*icide and is still alive. specifically he said something along the lines of "I was rereading comments on abdan and kept seeing people say mene is dead. how come? Theres no way shes gonna die. On the contrary, how could she die from that situation? However, its everyones personal opinions, so i don't mind ignoring it."
oh! i didny follow his private account so i didn’t know, this is my interpretation because of the hints related to suicide i mentioned in the video, thank u for telling me!! im glad he is very open on how people interpret his song~
the whole point of my videos are to try to interpret things from little hints here & there, from the MV and lyrics, shoes and chairs are in fact used a lot as a symbolism for suicide and even tho the producer himself clarified that it is not suicide(which i didnt know when making this video), i dont think it is “concerning” to interpret it this way… to me personally, and i have always say it repeatedly, everyone is free to interpret a song the way they want to, if you think it is unrelated than you are also free to think that way without belittling other people’s interpretations :(
I actually have a theory. If Mene atually didn't commit, and Miya, or some1, saved her, then the flowers on the table might resembles her thought of "You're too good, I should've received something like that instead", as in the possibility that she still thinks lowly of herself.
First off, amazing analysis! Second off, this song feels like the opposite to PinnocioP's reincarnation apple, where in Reincarnation Apple, the singer starts with her reincarnation and throws away the idea of reincarnation, whereas Mene hyperfocuses on the thought of reincarnation and lets it eat away at herself.
I don't know if this was mentioned or if anyone has mentioned this but in the MV when Mene talks about becoming a butterfly the text around her kind of look like wings. (especially near the end when she's her "butterfly self") example timestamps: 4:37 14:36
UNEXPLAINED SCENES: (Still good interpretation!) 12:00 To Mene, Miya is perfect. And, she wants to intimate her, because, she's a full, transformed butterfly (AKA someone who became "bad and old" to "perfect and new.") Mene is willing to go as far as dissecting her so she too, can be a butterfly. (Which is definitely a sign of obsessive "love.") 13:45 As Mene just breaks, she starts becoming delusional, and this can be called DPD (disassociative personality disorder.) Basically is just 2 or more distinct personalities. After accepting the "truth" that she's "ugly, normal and untransformed" she can't handle the pain anymore so she cracks. She copes by filling herself with lies that she's "perfect" just like Miya although her definition of perfect was supposed to be "extroverted and good student." When you numb out for so long with flickering feelings, you start to confuse yourself and this looks to suicidal thinking. It's unbearable so they take the easy way out. 15:10 With all these negative feelings, you can physically get sick, a fact as someone who does herbs for fun, and known by general people. Mene starts displaying a scene of schizophrenia (hallucination disorder) by saying shut up. If you sleep too little or long, you may start to have hallucinations, leading to worse physical health. With all this bad physical health, everyone else's voices are 10x worse. In her diary, it's revealed she hates everyone because they're untransformed butterflies like herself, leave flowers (telling her to die already) and rumors. 15:57 Apparently, Mene will be freed once she becomes a butterfly, which she "transforms" at the end though (again) she didn't get good grades. It's another lie she tells herself, and being a butterfly, "perfect and renewed" you may notice is not free. Even Mene's outfit has threads at her legs. Being a "good" student like Miya requires a lot of studying, and pressure. 16:10 It changes to normal Mene right after her being a butterfly. This is another sign she's delusional. And, at the very end, she flies. Not in the way you think, if being a butterfly is rebirth, to rebirth, you have to die first. In scenes, 2:34 foreshadows she's going to commit suicide. In Japan, chairs surrounding you signifies death. Shoes as well appear, another sign of suicide. And thus, she rebirths, and (probably) jumps off something, like a butterfly, and flies up to the heavens.
YESSSS I LOVE THIS SONGGGGG Also also I have some theories ^^ From my interpretation, the diary entries at 14:34 may also be talking about Miya rather than Mene’s “butterfly” self. When it says “how happy I would be if I could become a butterfly like you” may be talking about how Mene sees Miya as a fully developed butterfly, she’s reached her final form and is beautiful and perfect in any way; and Mene wants this, she also wants to be a butterfly like Miya. Also, in 16:37, I feel that this is when she commits, rather than having actually become a butterfly. During the last scene on the stage, we see normal Mene having a meltdown (as said in the vid) and this may be because she realised that this was all a dream; and she may have realised that in order to achieve her finally form, she’ll have to be reborn, she’ll have to die, which is why she believes she has become a butterfly in the final diary entry. I feel like that’s how her story ends. Also, this ending may have been foreshadowed by the flower vase on her desk, rather than a form of bullying. These r just my interpretations ^^
aaaa i agree sm!! sorry if i'm not clear enough at explaining but the meltdown after knowing it was one of her 'strange dreams' was what i was trying to say!! also the rebirth i've been mentioning about also means that in order to reach her final form, she needs to basically rebirth/restart her life by d wording(。>﹏
@@udinchwan ahhh sorry for misunderstandinggg 🙇♀️🙇♀️ ya we have the same ideas!! And ohhhh I forgot about that diary entry, in that case the bullying makes sense 😮
@@chiuuuuno no its okay!! i did sometimes talk in a roundabout way so😭😭 yeayea!! but again its just implied i think, maybe i was reaching too lol but thats the fun part bcs we can guess things up🤔🤔
Didn't guchiry say Mene didn't kill herself? Anyways here's my interpretation: Mene is being bullied (most likely due to homophobia) and people will say "but the flowers aren't white like they'd be with bullying in Japan so maybe they actually symbolise she's dead" but, notice how her and Miya's uniforms have diffrent colours, I think the color of the flowers is just supposed to show it's for her. Now Mene is being bullied and her bullies probably use her grades as an excuse. Mene realises she's being manipulated by them and wants to change that, so she wants to become abnormal through imitating Miya, whom she idolises. Mene starts getting better and better grades and becoming more "abnormal" thanks to that her classmates notice her and she loves all the love and attention (I think so bc in the first chorus you can see the chairs surrounding her are facing her). Than her grades start to slip again, she gets closer with Miya and starts trying too hard to be abnormal so everyone turns away from her (shoes in second chorus aren't facing her). Than she finally gets an identity crisis, she doesn't know who she is - is she old Mene or new Mene, or are they the same? She realises it's driving her crazy but she wants attention and love. So she starts s3xualizing herself (her final outfit). Now if we look at her dairy, we can see she says that she "disappeared" but there are still more entries. ("Look at me" repeated a few times). So to me, she made the old Mene die(hence the su!cide looking like metaphors) but she doesn't realise bullies won't stop bullying her just because of that, and she wants people to look at her. She says she saw a butterfly and became one, and I think she finally started becoming like Miya (symbolised by her pigtails looking like Miya's). Perhaps she was also neglected at home which is why she wanted attention so badly and didn't get help with bullying. She also doesn't seem to want to accept that through changing herself she's doing what ithers want her to fo aka. Manipulating her
i didnt follow guchiry’s private twitter so i didnt know, but this interpretation is interesting!! so the suicide metaphors are more like her old self right? not literally her life…i didn’t think of that, thank you for telling me!!
@@udinchwan oh I don't follow either I just saw someone say that- and no problem I myself only thought of that because actual su!cide interpretation made me uncomfortable, I do agree with her being depressed tho
I LOVE THIS AND I AM SO GLAD I RECOMMENDED IT😭 i already went really deep into the lore but this just opened more and more possibilities for my imagination to run wild, genuinely i found out new things i didnt know about this song and i am SO into the lore and i love it so much and how its so relatable, thank you so much for this udin!
and you should do i nandesu next! I havent even translated the lyrics yet even tho it being one of my favourite songs, and i want a white canvas to fully enjoy ur analysis and video💯💯
I am so happy this dropped, I was listening to the song a bit before I saw you uploaded this lol Amazing analysis, as always. Love your stuff :) Just want to add that butterflies can also symbolise death. So at the end, her saying she "became a butterfly" could mean that the only way to get what she wants is to be reborn. As in, commit s and be reborn as someone who can achieve and be what she desires, or be a perfect being in the afterlife. That's my interpretation of it at least.
I have a theory that the main cause of the bullying is homophobia due to Mene's classmates realizing how 'close' she is to Miya compared to the rest of them. The reason why Miya is never picked on is because she either started it and is using Mene and stringing her along (which Mene thinks is NOT happening) or because she never noticed Mene's attraction, she was exempt from the bullies. Might not hold up though.
Idk if people already know but at 4:29 the words are in the shape of a Pupa/Cocoon and then at the next lyrics (when the colors get saturated) its shaped as a butterfly wing around Menu which makes your statement of who Mene wants to be (as a butterfly in her true self?) pretty true.
