  • New teachers usually run into some confusion about how to interpret a salary schedule. You may also not be clear why it is so important to pick up as many college units as you can early in your career. This video will answer both of these questions.

    I'm still confused-- what do the "units' represent? How do you "get units?" Is it extra college credits? Or is it professional development?

    • @EmilyMuccianti

      Units can be both. The units represent your continuing education and for every 15 units it means a bump in column on the salary schedule.

    Hello Emily, besides units, are certifications (such as being certified in another language, child development, etc) taken into consideration as well?

    • @EmilyMuccianti
      @EmilyMuccianti  2 года назад +1

      Good question! In my experience, no, but every district is different. Usually obtaining those certifications gives you more units, so you do pick them up that way.

    Hi Emily, I am considering a teaching career and this video has been extremely useful in helping me plan. I was wondering, are there are any ways to get units during the school year and do I need to take time off of teaching in order to get up to 90 units?

      Hi Andrew! There are several ways to earn units. Your county office of education is a good resource and your local university. There are asynchronous workshops and courses that offer units as well as conferences and professional development both in person and online. If you need several units to top out, consider working toward your master’s degree. It’s a lot of work, but will pay off in the long run😊

    Excellent video. Would you happen to know if a business degree or degree unreleated to teaching would count towards the additional credits? If i get an MBA would this count? Or does it need to be an approved masters and then if so who does the approving? I can see districts which are all about budget, trying to say xyz degree doesnt count.
    For instance in CA theres a ridiculous new law formerly AB 130 that allows you to waive the CSETs (PRAXIS) if you have a degree in a specific field but an education degree, history degree etc doesnt count.
    Liberal studies for multiple subject rather than education and social science rather than history count however. So im worried districts will claim "oh your masters degree in history doesnt count even though you teach history" or an MBA doesnt count even though you teach econ. Etc.

      Also if the masters is in a field such as theology I can see them discriminating there and just not hiring you, my plan right now is actually two masters and a doctorates but I highly doubt I'll get hired anywhere with those credentials as why hire me when they can hire someone new and pay them last half. Does that make sense?

      I believe it is not specific to education. Any MA should work. My teacher bestie had an MA in theology and it counted. But please do your own research.😊

    So, if I have a MA in history, as well as a MS in library and information science, and the schedule says "MA+36," will I qualify for that pay increase even if I am a high school history teacher? I did not know if the units had to be specific to your subject, or if they considered any education as applicable; especially if I want to add other endorsements in the future. Thank you!

      This may vary state to state but in California, the units do not need to be subject specific. There is also a stipend for a Masters degree (but only one) 😊

    Do the extra units have to be graduate level courses?

    • @CaraMacedo
      @CaraMacedo Год назад

      I have a post bacc so I am wondering if any of those courses would count as extra units. They are related to the field but my BA was originally in something unrelated to teaching.

    • @EmilyMuccianti
      @EmilyMuccianti  Год назад

      Typically, the salary schedule will say BA plus… however many units. Most districts takes a variety of units whether they are post bacc or PD units. It’s always best to confirm with your district to be sure😊

      Do districts take into account PD units from out of State, I will be moving to CA from TX and have a large amount of PD hours. Not sure if/how that translates to units.

    Hi Emily, Are the increments a fixed dollar amount or are they typically a percentage increase on the minimum salary? I have not been able to determine standard incremental increases as a teacher moves up on the scale. TY

    • @EmilyMuccianti
      @EmilyMuccianti  8 месяцев назад

      In my experience, they are usually percentages but not necessarily the same percentage across the board.

      @@EmilyMuccianti Thank you for the quick response! Are you seeing a percentage increase around 1.5-2% for each year experience? Are the degrees and units progression a bit higher? Perhaps 2-3%. Any advice is appreciated!

      Each district is different. You can go to a district’s website and search for their certificated salary schedule and look. It’s under their HR tab.
