One line I love, that really stuck out to me, was Tweedy admonishing Ginger, saying that she gave her "everything a chicken could want".
It was a wonderful echo of the opening where Ginger told Molly "Everything you need is here" while also giving a bit more insight into Tweedy’s psychology. She's not just angry at the chickens for escaping and blowing up the pie machine, she considers them ungrateful for rebelling at all rather than fulfilling their "natural" purpose and dying.

For me, Ginger getting hipnotised was not to subvert the group dynamic, but to change roles with Molly, where Molly had to act as Ginger’s mother. With Ginger even saying “you’re not the boss of me” to Molly, something Molly said in the beggining of the film.

I really thought the villain would be Tweedy's daughter. It would have worked really well thematically. Another daughter, following her mother's steps. Imagine the original Tweedy in a mental institution, only for the daughter to realize the things her mother was "imagining" were real. It would have been a fun twist, idk. That's what I thought the plot twist was going to be.

    My issues:
    1. The movie doesn't show Rocky & Ginger reflect on hiding the truth about why they moved to the island/why humans & farms are dangerous. It seems fairly out of character for Ginger to lie and say nothing about the risks, in general Ginger felt like a different character at times.
    2. Mrs Tweedy should have shown more rage when she saw Ginger and prioritised finding the chickens when they escaped and hid in the nugget factory. Everything about the facility seems designed to get revenge on the chickens rather than make a profit so I don't know why she would prioritise speaking to the fast food buyer vs trying to get rid of her enemy. Surely she is experienced enough to realise that if they don't find the rebel chickens the factory will be ruined???
    3. Where are the other chicks 🥲
    4. Wasn't a fan of some of the voice acting, wish Ginger old VA was back. However I didn't mind Rockys voice, the rest of the old cast and Frizzle.
    5. Missing a lot of British humour, wasn't as funny.

I loved it as much as the first movie, ngl. I felt like the story progressed really well and it had it's moments where it was really dark, like the first one. And while I do agree that they should've brought the original VA's back (especially Ginger's), I personally thought the new VA's did a really great job. I absolutely loved Rocky and Ginger's couple moments, and I adored Molly. She was absolutely adorable.
Of course I do have a few complaints about it.
    1. We're still left with not knowing much about Rocky's backstory. It would've been interesting to see more about his past life when he was in the circus. But maybe they'll make a third movie focusing on that, hopefully.
    2. Mr. Tweedy didn't make a return, which sorta left me a little disappointed. I understand why he didn't, given that his VA passed, but we could've gotten atleast one mention of him. It's like they were unaware of his existence, even though he played a big part in the first movie. I was hoping to see atleast a little bonus ending of what he's up to with his life now that he's free from his abusive ex-wife.
    3. Who is Frizzle? Where did she come from? Who are her parents and where are they? We didn't get much info about her either. It would've been nice to see more backstory for her too.
Though I can see why they didn't implement these in the movie, as it would probably be a lot longer. But hopefully they'll cover all of that if they ever make a third film. Overall, it was a really enjoyable and awesome movie. I'm happy it didn't turn out like most other sequels do.

  • @AMHarbinger

I think they should've had Frizzle be the first chicken to be processed. It would've added a lot more weight to the scene and provide Molly with more incentive to save the rest of the chickens, having a crisis then decided she can't leave the others. It could've also been used as a way for both Molly and Ginger to come to terms with both their shortcomings. Ginger understanding she can't keep Molly from living her life and making her choices and Molly understands the world is dangerous but has things worth experiencing such as friendship.

In the first movie, Ginger was all about being honest with everyone, no matter how blunt it is.
In the sequel that trait about her is gone, she should have just been honest with Molly and said "We can't leave the Island because we'll be killed and eaten if found."

When I went in, the only thing I wanted this movie to get right was Ginger. Since she was my favourite part of the original. And I’d say she was handled well here. I really liked her arc of trying to ignore her past. At the start of the film, she decides not to help her other chickens because she thinks she’s not that freedom fighter anymore. But by the end of the film she sees that freedom fighter in her daughter & realises she’s not done saving chickens. I really appreciated that & I’m glad they took the main characters arc seriously instead of so many bad sequels that I end to sideline or butcher the main character in favour of more popular or simpler side characters getting the spotlight.

My personal gripes I had with it was what they did with fowler and babs. Fowler in the original was an old grumpy man set in his ways, very cold because of his days in the RAF. The sequel just made him an old man that would just ramble on in a pub to you. He wasn’t the same guy. Again babs. She was just rehashed and like you said it didn’t work. She had so much potential and I do think her character could’ve been great again.
The voice acting was a bit strange at first. Obviously a lot of the cast has been recast but the one that stood out to me the most was Ginger. She just sounded more soft and not as headstrong anymore. Could’ve worked seeing as she is a mum now but she felt very primary school teacher. Rocky I had no issues with. I think it helps that Tangled is my favourite film so hearing Zachary Levi was a nice surprise. I will say recasting Rocky would’ve been a lot easier than the rest. He’s an American in cast full of brits. It’s easier to fit replace I think.

Me personally I liked it fine. better than most sequels nowadays. I have a lot of nostalgia for the first movie so I watched this movie holding it to a higher standard than most movies. I do have a few problems with it. I don’t think it’s as good as the original (obviously) and I think the reason why the original film was so good was because they took this very dumb idea of chickens escaping a farm, and actually took it seriously and put a HUGE amount of effort into the story and character development. The original film has a big grand story to tell however this movie feels underwhelming compared to the first movie. The first movie also had a lot of jokes/dark humor and sexual jokes that still make me laugh. This movie really wasn’t that funny and I maybe laughed once throughout the entire film. The animation is just stunning and nice to look at and I think the voice acting was good too (although I am disappointed they didn’t get gingers original VA back.) honestly for what this movie is it’s a good follow up not a masterpiece by no means though but I appreciate the amount of effort and details that goes into these movies.

  • @blatherstheowl9148

As a huge fan of the first, I'll say I wasn't... *too* impressed.
As you said I did like the theming of how Molly wanted to be free from the island, reflecting Ginger's strong desire to be free from the farm, I thought it was very intriguing, but as you said it sorta falls behind the rest of the movie. I kinda wish we got more on Molly bonding with Frizzle to better emotionally connect us with the chickens of the Fun Farm. Music also felt like a huge step down from the first, which is a shame cause the first had a *fantastic* soundtrack in my opinion, iconic even.
Again the jokes in the movie didn't really get anything out of me, save for maybe one or two, which again (I'm being repetitive here, apologies for that), is a shame, cause the gags of the original were pretty well done! I was a bit disappointed in how Rocky and (to a bigger-ish extent in her case) Ginger behaved. Rocky never came off to me as dumb, which is unfortunately how he seems to behave a number of times in this film, save for a number of times he comes up with the team saving plan near the end there. Ginger is where it feels a bit more egregious, even if it has a sorta-reason(?) for it?
I don't think Ginger would abandon the chickens of Fun Farm at all.
Of course there are a few reasons one would reasonably not want to do so, the main one being *fear*. Ginger is TERRIFIED of Mrs. Tweedy (was also a bit bummed about how she was portrayed here but it was... fine I guess.), and she's obviously a big source of trauma for Ginger, but I feel that Ginger's good nature was always stronger than her fear. Heck, she would pour her fear into fueling her determination to get her, and her farm-mates out of the farm. The whole reason the first movie even HAPPENS is *because* Ginger is downright DETERMINED to get everyone, and yes she means EVERYONE, out of that farm. Not one chicken left behind.
Which is why I was kinda upset at how fast she was to choose to abandon the chickens of Fun Farm. Again there are reasons that would make sense for why she'd do this, but I do not think they are enough for her character to do something like that.
But really? Overall it was just alright in my opinion. Solid 6/10. I'll probably only watch the first if I feel the need to watch another Chicken Run movie, but I don't feel like I've wasted my time with the second.

As someone who was super excited for this movie, I agree with most of the comments especially about Tweedy's reveal. I feel like a lot of companies recently have been revealing their big bad way too early (such as in the trailer) and it ruins the entire viewing experience. The only way that works is if there are bigger and better surprises waiting for the final film, but when there's not and it's mixed with bad pacing, less than stellar writing/plot and a focus on cliches and poorly written jokes, then you just get an ok film. I like it don't get me wrong, I just feel like they could have done alot better. (Fanfiction writers, to your keyboards to write a better sequel (maybe following the main story beats but doing it better or coming up with your own idea, either way should be fun)! Ready, set, and... GO!!!)

Finally a film I've seen before Dazz, I know this because I got to attend the London premiere back in October.
So naturally I will have a bit of bias over the film, as I had one of the best cinema experience possible, from seeing some of the actual puppets of characters, to a free poster for the film.
Anyway, I really liked the film. I knew it'd never be as good as the original, as that's impossible. I really loved how the events of the first film impacted Ginger's outlook on life and how that's made Molly more resistant to living on the island.
And yes you do point out some issues, yes they overdid themselves on the Babs jokes a bit. And I definitely agree about the remote control was drawn out too long, that was ridiculous.
But there was a lot I still enjoyed, I really liked the eerie atmosphere in 'funland farms', the dark joke about Molly & Frizzle wanting to have their own bucket to sit in, and man I have not wanted to listen to 'we're all going on a summer holiday' since watching the film.
And there were definitely some great jokes still in the film, the gag with an eye scanner was hilarious.
Also I was surprisingly happy with all the voice acting, yes Ginger sounded a little different, but Thandiwe Newton did a great job, as did Zachary Levi.
I've actually been really tempted to make my own video on this film, but I'm not the most tech savvy for that, I'll definitely be re-watching the film soon though now it's out on streaming.
Anyway, great video as usual, even if I didn't 100% agree with you.

I honestly love the concept of this movie, with the original being based off a totalitarian government-like society similar to 1984, where the farm is controlled by fear, this movie is also a totalitarian government-like society similar to Brave New World, where the chickens are controlled by happiness and pleasure through science, in the case of this movie the collars. Like what i find really cool is how the brainwashed chickens talk similar to the brainwashed characters from Brave New World of how they want to be happy and love Mrs. Tweedy.
I feel, in execution though, it partially worked but with things like dialogue and the some dumb moments like with the hesitation with the button at the end it just kinda fell flat. Still an alright movie, just could have been so much more.

My only gripe was the painful amount of generic dialogue in the first third/half of the movie. Once they break in, it gets good.
But as expected, it doesn't hold a candle to the timeless classic that is the first movie. And I assure you that I have zero Nostalgia Goggles on.

One great thing that could come out of this is a blu-ray release of the original. I can only find dvd’s of the original.

23 years worth waiting! I guess Rocky was right, “Good things come to those who wait.”

I thought the film was fine but definitely not something I'd come back to. As an Aardman movie, it has a lot of charm and humor but I didn't feel as invested with this one. For one, it's more or less the same movie, just as you said with a heist element instead of a prison escape. Secondly, it doesn't feel as engaging. In the first movie, they set the stage perfectly. They were chickens trying to escape because, if they didn't lay enough eggs, they'd be killed. The threat was permeated throughout the whole movie. Meanwhile, the major threat of the second film doesn't come in till well into the halfway point. Seriously, take the scene where Edwina is killed in the first movie and that one chicken that got turned into nuggets. It doesn't hit as hard for the latter because it comes so late that there isn't enough time for it to leave a major impact.

I must say I really liked this movie and I’d watch it again my only issue with it is that Mrs. Tweety was underutilized and isn’t as hostile enough towards ginger as she was in the first one I expected her to be filled with rage and despise at the sight of ginger in the factory and travel to the ends of the earth to avenge herself at the expense of her emerging hit business to kill ginger when coming across her again for her ruining her chicken business plans and some high stakes with it but unfortunately that wasn’t done but that’s my only criticism other than that great movie I will watch it again❤️❤️

Bro- I heard 'took 23 years to produce' and I was like 'wait that would mean it would've had to come out in 19 something-' and then sat there as I then realized *'oh- 2000'*

I liked it. It seemed like a decent plot that manages to include the original villain without it seeming forced. Instead of pies, she’s making them into nuggets.

It's a good natural evolution. The first movie, the danger was frozen food, this one, it's mass market fast food.

If they made a Chicken Run 3, Mr. Tweedy would return to complete his abusive wife’s legacy by trying to either rebuilt the nugget factory or retaking his wife’s old farm and making chicken pies again

Wasn't Mr Tweedy the nice guy though? Clearly after the divorce he doesn't care about his mean wife anymore. He can continue being a egg farmer

The original voice actor of Mr Tweedy Died they don't need to bring him back even though he was the best character of the first Movie for Pete's sake if they make a Chicken Run 3 please don't bring back Mrs Tweedy a third time they need to do something original and give us a new villain.

Chicken Run 2 seems to have a case of "many great ideas, too little time."
    If it's a mini-series, it would've fleshed out everything.
Otherwise, just like Pinky, Elmyra, and the Brain, when the movie works, it REALLY works.
Also, I do enjoy the contrast between Ginger and Mrs. Tweedy. Both are affected by the past, but the former wants to protect while the latter wants to harm.

The van scene felt like the over the hedge climax where Vincent breaks in the van!
