  • Lionel Messi has dominated football for the last 15 years, captivating us with his talent, dedication, and outstanding moments. And As football fans, we will be forever grateful for his unforgettable dribbles, goals and pure dominance!
In this video we will focus mostly on overall Individual achievements and trophies won because these are the stats that clearly showcase productivity and greatness. And in these 2 categories, both Messi and Ronaldo have comparable great achievements, therefore we will be nit-picking to show why Messi is The Greatest!
Over their entire careers, it's Messi who edges the ratio, with 0.78 goals per game, whereas Ronaldo has scored 0.73 goals per game. If we drill down into goals per minutes, Messi scores a goal every 105 minutes, and Ronaldo scores a goal every 112 minutes.
Messi has racked up an impressive 374 assists in 1068 career appearances, compared to Ronaldo's 252 assists in 1231 games. When it comes to assists, there's only one winner. Lionel Messi's playmaking abilities are right up there with the very best, and he has the numbers to prove it.
No other footballer in history has sustained such elite levels for such a long period of time. Their stranglehold on the coveted Ballon d'Or award has been relentless, with Messi's 8 Ballon d'Or trophies edging Ronaldo's haul of 5 Ballons d'Or. No other player in history has won more than 3!
In terms of golden boots, Messi has finished as the league's top scorer 8 times, winning the European Golden Shoe on 6 of those occasions. Ronaldo has finished as top scorer in the league 5 times (once in the Premier League, once in Serie A, and 3 times in La Liga), winning 4 European Golden Shoes in the process.
In terms of trophies, Messi has the overall lead, with 45 trophies to Ronaldo's 35 trophies (including Messi's 2008 Olympic triumph, 2005 U-20 World Cup and ofc the most recent 2024 Copa America.
Internationally, Messi has now won both the Copa America and the World Cup with Argentina, while Ronaldo has won the Euros with Portugal as well as a Nations League trophy.
Now, let's dive into their primes. Messi, at his peak with Barcelona, was an unstoppable force. His ability to dribble past multiple defenders, his vision to make seemingly impossible passes, and his knack for scoring from almost any position on the field made him a phenomenon. During his prime years, Messi set records that seemed unbreakable, like his 91 goals in a calendar year in 2012.
Ronaldo, during his prime at Real Madrid, was the epitome of a goal-scoring machine. His athleticism, combined with his powerful shooting and heading ability, made him a nightmare for defenders. Ronaldo's prime was marked by an incredible goal-scoring rate, including his remarkable achievement of scoring 17 goals in a single Champions League campaign in 2013-14.
Comparing their skillsets during their primes, we see two different types of greatness. Messi’s dribbling is almost otherworldly. His close control, ability to change direction, and speed with the ball make him nearly impossible to defend one-on-one. Messi can create goal-scoring opportunities out of nowhere, weaving through defenses like a magician.
Now, when it comes to impact and influence its undeniable that CR7 is the bigger brand. His work ethic, determination, and sheer will to win have set a standard for aspiring athletes. Ronaldo’s influence extends beyond football, inspiring millions with his dedication and fitness regimen. Messi’s influence on football is profound. Players and coaches around the world constantly praise his vision and understanding of the game. Messi’s ability to inspire teammates and elevate the performance of those around him is legendary.
However, this is not a popularity contest. Factors such as influence, net worth, leadership qualities, and cultural impact were not the main considerations because they do not directly correlate with performance on the football field. The last time I checked, having more money or more social media followers than a peer does not equate to being a better player.
Messi has won everything, what a privilege to watch him and have him in this generation.
So, with the recent Copa America victory adding to his illustrious career, it’s clear that Lionel Messi stands above Ronaldo and the rest. His unparalleled skill, consistency, and impact on the game, solidify his status as the greatest of all time. The debate is over - Messi is the GOAT."
