I remember my Mom, in the 50's and 60's, using a "New Home" brand of pedal-driven sewing machine. Women, back then, still had to be physical to operate things! Remember the old "Wringer-Washer machines" to do laundry? Clothes lines?

I was pushing a washcloth into the wringer of our washer around 1954, standing on a chair and pushed a little too far. It caught three fingers of my right hand and my pinky was too short to get caught, so I have a scar between it and my ring finger where they split. Tied it up and didn’t do that again lol!

One way to keep the buckets where they need to be, put bucket in a milk crate and wire the crate to the t-post
The dressing table/what ever it was called lol, they are difficult to find in good condition. Back then, no humidity control in homes (AC) and the veneer they were made of just peeled up/lose, got snagged, and tore up. Actually even though they are sought after these days, they were a cheap made piece of furniture. And you were correct, they sold them in sets, this piece could be included with side tables, the bed head boards and foot boards, and even wardrobes and dressers. To restore them takes a really good craftsman to do it and make it look right. I grew up seeing one of these in my moms room. covered with hair stuff, curlers, make up and so on, One drawer was full of scarves one misc. make up and so on. Was called a dressing table in our house.

Concerning the vanity. When I was growing up in the forties and fifties, ( I'm older than dirt)... my mother had a very similar vanity. You would be correct about it belonging to a complete bedroom set. In Mama's case, it consisted of the vanity... bed with both a headboard and footboard, similar to a sleigh bed. There was also a very large chest of drawers and cedar storage chest, both of which one of my sons has today. I was gifted the set when I got married and like the idiot that I am, I did sell the vanity and bed for a ridiculously low price. Ours had a blond finish on it, rather than the dark finish on the vanity you discovered. Just a bit of trivia that I thought you might enjoy. Oh....I did learn to sew on my Grandmother's Singer treadle sewing machine. My calf muscles would scream at me from working that treadle. That's what it was called... "treadle", not "peddle".

I have a Singer like that in storage in pretty good to very good condition and it is also a non-electric model and our local Habitat for Humanity ReStore had a bunch of pedal and electric/electric conversion models come through some time ago. I also have a night stand in that Deco Era style, but the handles were damaged so i did put some good enough new ones on it, but kept the originals just to possibly match or approximate them later on. I'll have to look at the Singer next time I go to my storage unit... I also have an old hall tree that might be late 19th to early 20th century as it has a really old silvered mirror on it, and I have lived in two late 1800s homes, one in MN and one in Kenosha, WI. So I learned to appreciate those grand old homes and the decor that suits them..

I would not trade it for anything. I'm sorry but I don't think I have ever seen one like the other one. That sewing machine is from the late 1800 I have a machine like that one. I can find out information on your machine if you would like, as my superintendents husband worked for singer till he retired last year. I also have a dressing table, and dresser from the 40's. It was given to me by my departed partners mom when she went into a nursing home a couple of years ago. She was 96 this year. I was surprised when it was brought to me, its in mint condition. I'm so honored to have it. The mirror on the dressing table is very heavy, and huge. Both the dressing table, and the dresser are solid wood. Its a shame that the rest of the bedroom set wasn't with the dressing table that you found. There would have been a headboard, man's dresser, and a woman's dresser with mirror, as well as the matching dressing table. I hope you have a fantastic day ❤️🙂⚘️.

I had a vanity similar to that that I refinished and used in my son’s room for several years, and he has it now. I did not use the mirror with it. I put a typewriter in the lower center section. It was about the same age as the one you have and they are well built and can be restored into a beautiful piece of furniture. I also have a treadle sewing machine that belonged to my great-grandmother. My son also has it now. My mom had one that she used when I was little, and I can remember her working that treadle and sewing to patch my dad and brothers pants when they tore or wore a hole in the knees. They were made to last and the one my son has would work today if it was oiled and the belt replaced. They are neat to have, especially for homesteaders, because they require no electricity to work.

My grandmother had one I learned to sew on. When she started getting sick she gave it to me. (I was around 8 or 9. I know she brought it from the mountains to Michigan. She was about 20 and from the mid-late 1800’s. One day I came home from school and it was gone. I was crushed that my parents sold it.

To bad the singer plant closed here down the road, probably could have found alot out for you. I loved the singers from the 50's, I loved sowing with the peddle. You found some pretty neat things, that vanity is pretty. God bless yas

My aunt and my grandmother each had a Singer pedal machine. During the Depression Aunt Winnie took in foster kids and made all their clothes on it. Later when I was a kid I remember her making pillowcases and handkerchiefs on one. The skills she learned during the Depression stayed with her until her death. Everything was sold at auction as part of her estate but the memories linger.

The vanity is a Waterfall piece. The wood exterior is laminated pieces of wood glued on to the frame. That one needs a mirror which may be round or a more fancy shape and for a more complete piece a stool with cloth covered cushion. I had a bed, chest and vanity with a round mirror which I gifted to someone. Beautiful craftsmanship. Hope Randy enjoys it.

I guessed the Singer at “around 1900” which, of course, was borne out by your research. I had 2 similar to that, and let both go when we moved to a smaller home. One was my Mom’s, which I now wish I had kept. I would guess the other one about the 1950s. My Mom had a vanity similar to yours with the same type of wood and ornamentation. I don’t remember seeing it after I was about 8 years old, which would have been 1960. Dad built a new home, and most of the furniture was new after that. I enjoyed your video!

My mother in law had the Singer sewing machine that was still in great shape. She was still using it in the 1990s. I think she got it from her grandmother.

You might want to do some metal detecting at the abandoned place. Look under the house too.
Hope you find lots of treasures!

I had a similar dressing table when I was a teen. Approximately 55 years ago. It was old even then.
