- Today Mobi watches as her mom Duni and Ajabu play with the Silverback Kisumu at the Prague Zoo. You also see the 7 month old baby gorilla Mobi, and 4 months old Gaia.
Duni is 11 years old and the mother of Mobi. Kijivu is 31 years old and the mother of Gaia. Kisumu, the Silverback, is 27 years old and the father of both Mobi and Gaia. He lived in an all male bachelor group in Schmiding Zoo in Austria until September of 2022. Kisumu was born in Munich. Duni was born in Cantabria, Spain. Kijivu was born in Apeldoorn. Ajabu is 8 years old and was born at the Prague Zoo. The European gorilla breeding coordinator recommended that Duni and Kisumu be united for breeding purposes.
In this video, you see lots of mouthing activity. It is not meant to harm, but is used in play.

Mobi is the first baby for mother, Duni.
Gaia is the 5th baby for mother, Kijivu, who is 31 years old. The father is Kisumu and he is 27 years old. Gaia is thriving and is bonding well with her mother. Gaia is nursing from mom, suckling vegetables, and starting to toddle around.
The Prague Zoo is one of the most well-known and respected zoological gardens in Europe. In 2015 the Prague Zoo was voted the 4th best zoo in the world by TripAdvisor.com. It was listed along with the San Diego Zoo, Loro Parque in Spain and Singapore Zoo.

-In general, gorillas live 35 years in the wild. In captivity they get better food, medical care and have no predators. Life expectancy can range from 50-60 years.
GORILLA CONSERVATION - one of the easiest things you can do to help gorillas is to recycle your old cell phone or other hand held electronic device. Recycling electronics helps support gorilla conservation programs. Cell phones and other electronics contain a mineral called coltan (it is short for columbite-tantalite). 80% of the world’s Coltan is mined in central Africa, which is wild gorilla habitat. Forests are being strip mined for this highly sought after mineral, with illegal mining even taking place in protected gorilla areas. BUT! Coltan is reusable! Clear out that old cell phone drawer! Our hope is, that the more and more electronic devices are recycled, this can slow demand for new Coltan to be mined in Africa.
Some estimates report gorilla populations have declined 25% in the past 20-25 years.
The Conservation status of the Western Lowland gorilla is “Critically Endangered”.

I absolutely love this family. He is so much more active than Mokolo. What a joy and they probably extended his life by 10 yrs putting him in with these ladies/babies. That was so awesome. Thanks Larry.

Excellent video, Larry! I saw a special on PBS about alpha silverback’s. Research is showing that there may be a deliberate reason why silverbacks show a softer gentler side with their children. By doing this, they are 5 times more likely to have more children.

Are there 2 silverbacks in this troop? Is Ajabu's father, Richard, in this troop as well?
Richard has been placed in a second troop, with his two other sons. He is the leader in that group of three gorillas.
Any opinion on what the trouble is at Kyoto Zoo and the idea of separating Dad and son?
Sorry, I have not had time to follow other gorilla families. Not knowing the situation all I can say is I understand as males reach maturity they generally leave for a bachelor troop on their own, are driven away by their dad’s/silverback of their troop, or get lucky and form their own troop.
Ajabu was castrated to avoid that situation in Prague. Kyoto isn't Prague, so they may want to keep more males able to breed. Speculation
