Tin Drum is a seminal album in my life. First heard it at school friend's house in 82. I was captivated at first hearing. I'd never heard anything like it. Talking Drum and Still Life in Mobile Homes are my favourite - oh and Sons of Pioneers and Cantonese Boy. Oh its all my favourite.🤷♂️
Ugh the sound of this album.....it's amazing. It's unlike anything else really - angular yet sinuous, Eastern influences, that squalling guitar (courtesy of Sylvian Believe), Karns amazing bass. Lyrically it could be about social awkwardness but it's Sylvian so who knows for sure. Such a great album, so much too look forward to. Fashion caught up with them and then they were gone....
Without Tin Drum you wouldn't have had Arcadia's album soundscapes Japan was already an influence on Duran Duran, whether it was something either bands wanted to acknowledge at various stages, but it's within Tin Drum you have the blueprint for all the esoteric Duran songs, from The Chauffeur, Tiger Tiger, Land, Save A Prayer, Winter Marches On, Election Day, Lady Ice, My Antarctica... THIS is the genetic code
Funnily enough it was the other way about. The first 2 albums Adolescent Sex and Obscure Alternatives are both easier to understand vocally and then he dissolves into a more lush vocal style that sinks into the music and requires a lyrics sheet if you want to know what's being sung.
So there is another version of Art of Parties that was released as a single, which i actually prefer and you’ll hear the live version of that when you get to Oil on Canvas. So check that out if you can but Tin Drum is quite the departure from Polaroids and it’s a defining album. All the other ‘synth’ bands at the time didn’t have the layers that this has. Enjoy!
I agree the single version is better in my humble opinion. Has a funkier feel to it and Mick Karn's bass playing especially on the extended version is from another planet. 👌
I heard the Oil on Canvas version of this before the Tin Drum album version and the two sound completely different on the intro - the drum part I think is the same, but the Bass and Synth parts are unrecognisable and I personally find that the Oil on Canvas version flows better for me - just a personal preference, though. Nice, thoughtful reaction!
They released a single version, which is much more guitar heavy. This was the first album without Rob Dean, though he still played on the Art Of Parties tour in 1981. Once you've finished Tin Drum, you really should go back to Adolescent Sex and Obscure Alternatives. It will be a REAL eye opener for you...

First single brought home by my twin bro-thought it was too mixed up at first listen. Did fall in love with them and they changed my life.
Oil On Canvas is a live album and concert film

Ahhh, I knew you had explained it to me but obviously remembered it backward. Cheers for clarifying, Philip!

Right on, thanks for the info about the single and live versions. And cheers, will be listening for the differences with Gentlemen Take Polaroids.

The lyrics in David Sylvians solo work have much more significance.

For sure, will absolutely do that. And I'll try to react to the single version too, I'm sure it's in the folder I have access to. Cheers!
