  • Our drive to St Helena Bay on a misty gravel road was the perfect start to this day. St Helena Bay is a bustling coastal town in the Western Cape, primarily known for its vibrant fishing industry. Although our arrival was complicated by major roadworks, we managed to explore quite a bit of the area. St Helena Bay Hotel was our first stop and it offered beautiful facilities and breathtaking views of the ocean. We also visited the harbour, and although we missed the fishermen returning with their catch, we observed the area being cleaned after a busy morning. The view from the top of the hill overlooking the bay was stunning, and to our delight, we spotted a herd of eland, which was a wonderful surprise. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to St Helena Bay. #DustBugs #dustbugstravel #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #westerncape

    Wow wow, St Helena Bay here I come, but be careful, I am coming with lots and lots of cooking oil to fry all the fish that might come my way, the place is nice fresh, and clean, a sure place I will be visiting in a near future, thank you once again Sonja and Curtis.

    Hi you two! Gravel road, sunrise, blue skies and kwaggas for a start. Wow! What more can one want? Blue sea and a real fishing harbour of course! A really interesting place this bay with the white housing developing all around. The church building beautiful and interesting. Then a view from the hill and the eland to end this fascinating trip. Thank you for taking me along. Until next time, keep safe!

      We could really not have asked for a more perfect start to this trip than that incredible gravel road with the kwaggas! 🦓 St Helena Bay was a stunning place to visit and of course the eland had to be one of the highlights for us! 🚙🐐 I'm so glad you enjoyed.

    St Helena Bay....what a lovely Westcoast town and especially remember StompneusBay where I have spent quite a few holidays with my parents visiting family. I have not measured it but I believe the main road in St Helena Bay is 14km long. Thanx for taking us back there...I will be visiting soon again..the Westcoast is just a special place.

    The West Coast is stunning. I always enjoy my trips when I go there. The hotel building is really amazing nice. Character is the appropriate name for St Helena. It is absolutely fabulous. We are becoming spoilt with the drone footage. Thank you I appreciate it. You cannot imagine the rown without the footage. Well done. A trip will worth the effort. Thank you. Next trip I am there!

    A bit of history: There's an area called "Brandhuis", situated off the mainroad next to the sea side, along a winding gravel road - that's where I was born, in a house a stonethrow away from the edge of the water, before we were moved to the coloured township. "Old Stefaans" owned that whole stretch of land, and it is said that he left some land to my grandfather. That will be a losing battle to fight anyway. The little bay was named after my grandfather (Tommy Summers), and was called "Tommy se Baai", the long continous set of houses on your left before you get to the hotel, were military baracks for brittish sholdiers back in the day. My grandma was the cook in the original hotel back in the day. Next to it, on the other side is a dilapidated building that use to be their house for a while but became a butchery and eventually abandoned. On the right, if you drove through the neighborhood (Steenbergs Cove), opposite the hotel, you would have come across a historic cemetry where some brittish and italian solders and their families are buried (the Potellos) as well as the primary school I went to. Further along, you would have come across the Vasco Da Gama monument, visible from the main road. Their are nice lttle private beach spots we used to go as teenagers, sadly its not so private anymore. My uncle was the bookkeeper at the local fishing factory while my dad, 2nd uncle and grandfather worked on those huge fishing trawlers that are laying in the harbour. I miss the old St Helena Bay❤

    I flew my 2m motorized glider off badger drive which I can see in your drone footage - I'm surprised that area is still undeveloped. Anyway while enjoying the radio control glider some bird of prey swooped in and started flying in the gliders wake. 40mins of beautiful flying with a natural wingman! Awesome moment. after that i fitted a removable camera to the glider but to this day I haven't had an experience like that again.

    Hi guys sun sea and clear blue skies .Big fishing industry great how you can just drive around the harbour with all the trawlers. The restaurants in the new development carried on the the sea going themed with the incorporation of boats. The modern NGK church also has an sea faring touch with the old ship timbers of the door and a pulpit made like a ships wheel house and how fantastic it was built by the congregation the drone and also the views from the top of the hill stunning the double decker bus was a surprise and Curtis they say great minds think alike I'd love to renovate and live in it 😂 .being south Africa lots of wild life and the Elands top it off .St Helena has definitely got history vasco Degarma arrived 1497 .I could almost smell the sea and the first stunning video thanks for taking me along cheerio till the next one

    If you had gone past Sandy Point for a kilo or so, you would have found the Vasco DA Gama monument right next to the sea. At Shelley Point is a statue of Vasco DA Gama. Very interesting history. I visit every year 😊

    St Helena Bay has indeed grown in size since my last visit there some 25 years ago! Lovely drone footage. The zebra you spotted en route would appear to be Rau Quaggas, named after one of the originators of the group of scientists (called the Quagga Project) who are using DNA and selective breeding to basically bring quaggas back from the dead! It would appear the project has been running for close on 20 years. I sincerely hope they succeed.

    Thanks for the memories! We were therein March. Nothing much has happened since. The road in is still a WIP! LoL. And the gum trees lining the road reminds me of home. St Helena has a huge potential. To me, a poor man's Langebaan. Some lovely places, but a lot of the area needs a boost. Give it a few more years, with all the development going on it, would be a wonderful place to invest, maybe even sooner when the road is complete. As we were on a tight schedule, it was only a half day visit, with time for brunch at St Helena Nursery and Cafe......very interesting and good tucker!
    Thanks for showing so much that we missed. Great video!
    Are you off to Langebaan next?

    Hi Curtis,
    Did you know there is a Vasco da Gama monument between St Helena bay and Stompneus bay. I guess you missed this it. It's been there for ages, sorry that you missed this historic monument.

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  6 дней назад +1

      No, I didn't know about the monument until viewers pointed it out. We're not too fussed about anything we 'miss' along the way as we travel. It's simply impossible to know about and visit every single place of interest in the places we visit. 🚙
