Hi. I just watched the Ashton episode and it brought back memories. I am now 71 years old. And when we were in about std. 1 or 2 my uncle used to go on business trips and pass through the pass. My sister and myself would go with him and he dropped us off at the fort. We spent the day there...those were the days it was still safe. And when the sun was going down he would pick us up again. We loved it. @DustBugsTravel

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed how you shared your experiences of Ashton. This is the town where she grew up. Your video revived many memories as you drove by the school, the church, the townhall (where they had their matric dance 😉), also a glimpse of the house they stayed in and so many more sights. Thank you for the opportunity to travel with you.😊

Hi you two! What a breathtaking approach road to Ashton! The mountains with the stunning cliffs -- and then that surprise of a fort! Platform 6 is quite something more than a platform, even with that amazing loco on the front porch. Thank you for the exploration through the town. Ashton is a very bright and neat place, with something beautiful and interesting to see wherever you look. I agree that the Viewpoint vista tops it all, with the mountains rounding off the picture. Thank you again. I can't wait for the next trip!
    Keep safe!

To think we never knew about the fort until this visit! That must be the most well-camouflaged one we've seen to date. And built atop those incredible formations and the tunnel! ⛰️ Platform 62 is a well-stocked place and a must-stop for every visitor to Ashton, as is the incredible viewpoint which we almost gave up on. The views from up there can only be described as breathtaking, the beauty just stretches on for kilometres into the distance. We thought the patchwork of colours was unbelievable. So happy you enjoyed! 🚙🤩

I have been this way many times but never fail to appreciate the beauty of Cogmanskloof and the little tunnel with the old fort above it. Usually I hate tunnels but that little one is so pretty, and the magnificent mountains all round. The stopping places are new since my day, there used to be a little site where you could climb out and view Good old Bain! Hy het gebou om te hou!The old bridge is amazing, so beautifully built. Ashton has expanded! Wow! That big-arch bridge is new since my day. Now the old railway bridge, that is special. Love the old loco. Grand old dame. My hubby and I visited Platform 62 a few times. It seems a lot more sophisticated now. The food was really good though. So glad you found the station. And what a tree!!! Dis n meneer v Its lovely to see the hoepoe. There used to always be a hoepoe in my moms back yard in Bellville. Hullo, old friend! I am somehow reminded of the goods station at Bellville where we used to go to pick up a box of apples sent by relatives who had an apple farm. I remember the smell of those apples when the box was loaded into the back of our station wagon. So glad you got up close to the railbridge. Thank you for happy memories.

    • @DustBugsTravel

The rockface, tunnel and fort were all incredible to see so close up! While we've driven through there many times, we've never stopped to have a closer look. ⛰️😍 Platform 62 is a perfect stopover for any visitor to Ashton, what with a loco in fantastic shape and a huge variety of items on display in their spacious facility. How I wish we could go back to those days where folks still sent boxes of apples from the farm to the city, by train no less! 🚂🍎🍏Those are great memories! Í'm glad you enjoyed present-day Ashton! 🚙😁

Wat n pragtige dorpie. That new bridge is beautiful. So nice to see the lady picking up rubbish . The town looked very clean and no potholes. A Canadian built Steam engine .🚂 It travelled a long way to get to SA. . I hope that Sonia was upwind from that guy who worked in the cannery factory for 30 years. He said he still loved his baked beans. Say no more !!🚽🔥 Curtis why did you not get the drone out when you got to the Viewing Point ? Perfect place for a drone shot with all the mountains in the background. That old stone fort was brilliantly camouflaged. I just loved all the neat stone work at the picnic spots. So sad about that plaque being stolen. 😡At least Sonia can access the history on her phone. Baie dankie vir die mooi reis.🚙

Ashton is indeed a beautiful town, we never knew that! 🚙🤩 The views of the mountains and over the town from the viewpoint were spectacular enough without drone shots and I wasn't going to chance the drone in the breeze either. 🤷🏻‍♂️ It was fantastic seeing the old fort and the old bridge, I did get very upset about the plaque on the bridge. ☹️ The loco is in superb shape and has such a fantastic story. I'm so happy that it found such a prime spot in Ashton! 😍🚂 Thanks for coming along!

Loved the history and the picnic spots .the steam train made in Canada is unusual..the longest wine route and first arch bridge stunning. Nice to see them picking up litter,!!! Great anti aircraft gun .a good idea platform 62 love the art work .the old station still in use shame only freight Great to see old iron bridge still being used .the town lall was a unusual design. We'll done Sonia 1970s DRF church spot on beautiful mosaic and we'll kept. I noticed again the lack of high fences brilliant 👏 the view point was topnotch with the mountains in the background a very positive place. Thanks for taking me along cheerio till the next one

We've mostly approached from the other side and never saw the fort before, but now that we know it's there, it's clear as day! It was certainly well camouflaged to us until now! The views from the viewpoint were spectacular, we could see forever! 🤩⛰️ I don't think we've seen a Canadian loco before, it was in such great shape! 🚂😍 Any tourist can certainly while away a few hours at Platform 62 and the rest of Ashton. 🚙😁 So glad you enjoyed!
