The Bulls would have never won 6 rings if MJ didn't do this positive affirmation skit
Bingo. Finally, someone understands 🤣
Lol
That's a fact. The Last Dance was ridiculous without including this.
You my friend, just made my day, and that's ok
Maybe, though he already had 1 when this was first recorded (I actually thought it was from a year later). Clearly MJs found his post-Bulls career vocation: as a personal positivity coach!
“I’ll protect your anonymity” lmao
I laughed so hard right there 😂😂😂
Mr. Jordan did a fine job here - his pauses are pure magic.
Yes!
Pure magic. Magic Johnson
@@wdalts, wrong basketball player! LOL
He's was biting his tongue so we wouldn't burst out laughing... These sketches are legendary
Better than Jimmy Fallon who always broke character
What sells this is Franken’s sincerity. He just plays it straight. He’s clearly the most messed up person, wildly unqualified to help people with these imagined problems. It’s brilliant.
Unqualified? He may not be a licensed therapist, but he IS a member of several 12-step programs.
@@kewkabe don’t forget, he’s also a caring nurturer.
He's a genius. He was treated horribly. But he's still around, doing great podcasts.
Didn't he also become a senator?
@@saintpauligirl8269 not only that, but he's good enough. he's smart enough, and dog gone it. people like him
4:00 Props to Mike for not laughing. He was holding it back so hard.
Care to bet on how many Directors Cuts it took for him to say the "I'm Smart enough" line in front of the mirror?
I was so impressed by Michael. He knew he was so better than most, but he just kept it to himself.
Dazlidorne Jenkins if you believe that then you don’t know Michael at all LoL
If he messed up he would have take it personal
You can also see on Al Franken's face: "Yup, I've definitely struck comedy gold with this bit."
Denial isn't just a river in Egypt. That's pure gold.
I don't understand this joke
@@LOUBNAFILLE denial= Da Nile
@@LOUBNAFILLE The Nile River is one of the most famous, longest and possibly the most oldest known river on earth. It was even mentioned in biblical times and and such landmarks as The Great Pyramids of Egypt borders it.
It was a funny joke since Stuart acted like MJ was acting like the term "The Nile" which sounds much like the actual appropriate term "Denial".
You know he didn't make that up, right? That's an old saying.
@@whatusername4817 haa I'm French guy and we said "le nil", I didn't think of "the" in place of "De" 🤦♂️
Thanks 👍
Maybe one of the best SNL skits ever. The absurdity aspect alone makes it work incredibly well.
Ron Sheridan ‘dog gonnit people like me.’ Having MJ have to look himself in the mirror on live tv and have to say that is so awesome.
@@letsgetlit2829 Care to bet how many G$$ it would have taken for Kobe to do this? Dude was heartless.
@@MrDanty64 Lolol oof, I was going to say this aged like milk, but then I looked it up and did some rudimentary subtraction and then realized *he died before you made that comment.* You are a dark dude, my dude!
You aren't wrong though. However I'd say Michael is pretty similar to Kobe.. in a certain sense? I mean Michael Jordan is kinda well-known for being a notorious asshole. It just makes it weird when somebody is that fucking arrogant, but also they actually ARE the best on the planet, so idk lol I guess he earned it..
Edit: Oh. You also said "Dude *was* heartless". I probably should've seen that...
This has always been the quintessential "back when SNL was funny" skit to me. I had never attended any kind of 12 step meeting (13th step, relapsing, repeating) back then as I was like 12 or 13, but circumstances have led me through a few of them over more recent decades and Franken absolutely nailed it. Messed up people making no progress but acting like they deserve a cookie for one week of sobriety that was really only like 36 hours. And these meetings will definitely show you that alcoholics are far and away the worst addicts. Emotionally unhinged, scary, bipolar, abusive weirdos. Alcohol is an emotional truth serum - it truly unmasks the type of person you really are under all the layers of fakery and superficialiy that we build up over the years. A few drinks tears all of that right down. You get me drunk and I'm gonna tell you 20 times how cool I think you are, how we should hang out more often, how I like your hat, etc. But the true alcoholics are nasty and mean - you dissolve their outward facade of niceness and they are just cruel. That's how you spot an alcoholic - just two drinks in and they're wanting to settle old scores, tell you how awesome they are despite not being awesome at all, accuse their significant other of cheating and possibly even becoming physically violent, usually against women because they're bullies. Two or three more drinks and they're crying, either out of nobody-loves-me self pity or apology. Two more drinks and they're back to the abuse and then they pass out and pee on themselves.
@idontwantahandlethough my uncle was Bob Munden. His arrogance was legendary. But his talent was ...well...good watch Stan Lee's superhuman and u will see😂
A member of several 12 step programs, but not a licensed therapist... lmao
But thats ok...
@@susanavery5348 because he’s good enough, he’s smart enough, and doggonit people like him.
that mirror talk gave him 5 more rings. Hahaha!
He's Micheal Jordan, people do like him. Kids who never seen his games wear his shoes to this day.
And Barcelona
Facts. Carried him through a 72 win season.
SNL was SOOOO ahead of its time.
This could be 2019 easily.
The great artist Man Ray once said "They say I'm 'ahead of the times'.... I said, 'No: I'm never ahead of my time. I'm of my time. It's the others who are behind the times.'"
America's sense of humor has changed in the last 20 years. Parody and satire - the playground of the underdog, especially in the conformist 20th century - have vanished as a new mainstream version of the underdog has emerged. But that new version nevertheless REMAINS mainstream. It's still subject to the same satire and parody that power was subjected to in the 20th century. But corporations don't want to lose money, so we lose humor. We're a worse people for it.
@Juanita Wright it literally said "Aired 09/28/91" in the description
@@spb7883 I don't know about the corporation part of that but a lot of what you're saying is right on. Scarier still is if this six feet of sparation turns into The New Separatism between The Masked and The Unmasked and those who dare to go in between the gap, maybe pseudo a la Steve McQueen on the motorcycle in The Great Esacape or like Dustin pounding on the glassat the end of The Graduate...
You say that like it’s technology
It was. Besides a few skits and a few characters it hasn’t been good in like 15 years or so.
This is one of the most brilliant concepts they ever came up with. You have to really give credit to Jordan for keeping it together. And that little self assured gesture Franken makes after saying "'Denial' aint just a river in Egypt" is so epic.
"I don't have to dribble the ball fast, or throw the ball into the basket." Classic.
Best line!
Michael Jordan : underrated comic actor. Seriously.
He seriously nailed that monologue without having to look at the cue cards. Really impressive, no lie.
Yeah, he is surprisingly good.
Underrated actor, PERIOD! He doesn’t get enough credit for his acting!
@@onlyone23km Space Jam should've let him show more of his natural personality.
@@NotaPizzaGRL for what it’s worth, I think it did. People just thought he was a bad actor, when he did a good job playing himself.
The older I get, the more I actually want Stuart in my life.
Hahaha oh god me too. Have you tried saying his mantra in the mirror in the morning? Normally I can't bring myself to do things like positive affirmations (even though I probably should) because it just feels way too corny. But with Stuart's motto, it's so corny and silly that you can't help but laugh at yourself. And then look at that, you feel a little bit better about things :D
Be the Stuart Smalley you want to see in the world. Remember, you're good enough, you're smart enough, and doggone it, people like you.
Me too!
Stuart’s facial expressions while looking in the mirror at Michael. How he kept it together is beyond me 😂
And then he starts feeling sorry for himself. 😂
When Michael Jordan said “You deserve for your dreams to come true” I was like wow 🥺🥺
I KNOW RIGHT??? ❤️❤️❤️
Except for winning championships. Patrick Ewings dream didn’t come true. Barkleys dreams didn’t come true lol
@@velvetlensfilms3290😂
At the end of this sketch when it first aired, Al Franken thanks Michael for participating in the sketch with him and they give each other another hug as crew is preparing for the next sketch. It was such a sweet moment, and I remember when this was shown on "Best Of" compilations, they always cut that moment out. Only a few times have I seen that moment in its entirety. It would have been nice to have included that moment here.
I remember that! I agree that they should have shown that on here because it was very heartwarming. This is one of the funniest sketches from early nineties Saturday Night Live.
~Dutch
Very sweet!
One of the best Daily Affirmations... certainly one of the sweetest. Believe it or not, even the Michael Jordans of this world sometimes need to say to themselves, "All I need to be is the best ME I can be."
LMAO!!! Michael J., I'll preserve your anonymity.
Kind of the name people know him by
thats the insane line - im hardly a bb fan ... but duh - most people on earth knew of him
Back in the summer of 1993 I worked in a nightclub in Milwaukee. During the dancing, as the club was hopping, the DJ would stop the music briefly and play 3 minutes of this clip on a big screen just to the side of the dance floor. It was always a huge hit.
Making America's Dance Halls Great again, yo.

You can tell it took a lot for MJ not to laugh a couple times... 😂😂😂
Amazing self-control by Franken not to lose it during this sketch.
And also by MJ. When He turned to the mirror to do the affirmation, he almost cracked but he kept a straight face.
"And that's... OKAY." :)
My favorite line
POW! Right in the nostalgia.
The Chicago Bulls were a dynasty, and so was Mr. Smalley.
Love how he’s wearing a Air Jordan shirt😂😂😂😂
the best skit ever, poor michael working hard to keep from busting a gut laughing.
And fast forward to 2021, most people now need Stewart’s advice to just function in society.
Oh!!! We laughed so hard at Al Franken. He did this at the height of new age confirmations.
Forgot how terrific SNL used to be.. Both Michael J (his name is protected) and Al Franken worked great
I have to give you props. This is a great, underrated comment. Hilarious.
Everything you say about the current SNL cast was said about this SNL cast in the 80s & 90s. And with literally every cast that came after the original Not Ready For Prime Time Players left the show.
@@dildonius not really.. The early 80s SNL was horrible, and the show would have been cancelled if not for Eddie Murphy.
The 1990s SNL was very popular and had a talented cast, although not at the same level as Eddie Murphy or the early SNL years.
@@dildonius wtf are you talking about fool?

"Michael, DeNile ain't just a river in Egypt" I lost it! Haha I miss the old SNL!
What is or who is DeNile?
Abdul Hamid Alonto It's a play on words. The Nile is a river in Egypt. He was saying Michael is in "Denial".
Don't worry. Al Franken brought back Daily Affermations as Daily Allagations in 2017.
Was that a new joke back then? Because now people say it sarcastically and it really isn't funny. In 1991 everyone was laughing like it was so clever & fresh.
very good you mr clever clever pants
This is so beyond brilliant. I feel robbed that I did not see this sooner than right now.
Imagine watching it live.
and that’s ... o.k.
I watched it when it aired. It was awesome
It's always going to be good, but yes, watching it when it first aired was truly something special. ❤
Definitely back after watching the last dance. It’s Probably because the crowd laughing distracted him a bit, but both times Michael pauses in the middle of the affirmation, hilarious
One of the funniest. I’m so old I saw it when it aired.
We aren't old. We are sexy vintage.
I recorded it that night on a vcr

"Michael J. - I'll protect your anonymity." Al
I think I finally understand, as a Blazer fan, how Michael Jordan ruled the world for more than his basketball. And strangely, I think Al Franken could have been President.
Al Franken definitely could’ve been President. He was forced to resign for nothing.
@@chadwells7562 Kristin Gillibrand threw him under the bud for her 15 minute presidential run. It was bullshit. I'm from Minnesota so I'll admit it's nice to have more female representation but Al Franken was a bull fighter and I miss him calling out politicians on their bullshit.

Stuart Smalley: "And that's...okay."
Funny, and yet, touching, especially at the end.
These were the best years for SNL. Phil Hartman, Adam Sandler, Chris Farley, Chris Rock, Dana Carvey, Mike Myers, Rob Schneider, Kevin Nealon, and many others I'm forgetting. There has never been a better cast than in the early 90's.
BroodallyHonest Totally agree!
Jan Hook, Julia Sweeney
@L H There was one female skit that I can remember, and that was Pat by Julia Sweeney, but beyond that, to be honest, women were bit players. So respect to Julia Sweeney.
@L H I don't know why you're being so hostile. I'm stating my feelings and I think I've been very civil. Men naturally identify with men just like women do with other women.
@@BroodallyHonest easy big fella. i've seen L H's picture when one was up on her youtube profile page, and all i can say is woof.
Mj is the king how could he do that with a straight face 🤣
He was about to break on multiple occasions.
This still kills me 30 years later.
And makes it utterly impossible to serenely do self-affirmations… all these years on.
I absolutely love Stuart Smalley 😂
Best part him reading the card to remember his (Michael Jordan’s) name lol
God bless them. I don't know how Mr Jordan kept a straight face through that one.
I remember this as a kid LMAO! Air Jordan on SNL was classic!
This is the Michael Jordan that we all want
This was the affirmation and good vibes needed for MJ to finally win rings. He finally became good enough.
Right. He was full of doubt before that because it was hard to tell if he was good enough or not. He thought maybe he was just lucky to throw the ball in the basket all those times before and wouldn't be able to make enough baskets to win championships.
The humour hits differently after watching "The Last Dance"!😀
Having MJ even verbalizing how he doesn't have to be the best b-ball player, even in a joking manner, likely required a lot of his pride being swallowed for the sake of the sketch, I'm sure! Knowing that, and seeing his hesitations saying the lines in front of the mirror ... 😄😂
It's especially funny because he clearly 100% didn't believe them.
I remember this one the best. Sitting on grandma's couch up later than I ought to have been
Michael J. definitely needed this confidence boost.
A bunch of teams have been wishing that MJ didn’t have that affirmation since 1991
“Denial ain’t just a river in Egypt” 😂😂😂
I love how the audience laughs knowing he’s about to break character.
I remember watching this back in 1991 when it was new. I was twelve years old and I was in sixth grade. At the time, it seemed like everybody at my school in Missoula Montana loved The Chicago Bulls. They obviously were the most popular basketball team at the time. Especially with someone as incredibly talented as Michael Jordan. At the time I decided to choose my own favourite pro basketball team, so I chose The Portland Trailblazers. Their most valuable player at the time was Clyde "The Glide" Drexler. I was really surprised when in 1992, The Blazers made it into the NBA Championship against the Bulls. Unfortunately for me, the Bulls won. In all due respect however, Michael Jordan is a wonderful human being. He is incredibly iconic in the world of pro basketball, he is very genuine and has made one of the most impressively successful careers for himself. He is now a multi-billionaire!
This sketch was hilarious because it was like the idea was for Stuart Smalley to be helping encourage Michael to force negative voices out of his head before each basketball game, so that he can focus better on playing and winning. However, Michael seemed like the whole thing was rather awkward, because he is generally very positive and happy. I love it when Stuart instructs him to look in the mirror and say "Hello Michael". That part always cracks me up!

most underrated snl skit. personally my top 5
Agreed
@@catherinebarkovich5887 Jay I LOVE that movie!!!! I still have my VHS copy. It is one the FUNNIEST depictions of a dysfunctional family that I've ever seen. The flashback of the dad trying to get that classic vacation pic of the kids with the Hollywood sign in the background had me CRYING with laughter. Yelling at them to get in the street when cars keep whipping around corners almost killing them.
Stuart's dad is a SAVAGE. That mean ass, drunk ass father just makes the movie: When little Stuart comes up with Sir Cleans A Lot for the Ajax White Knight contest and his dad replies "More like Sir Eats a Lot" or when adult Stuart says he's writing a book and his dad is like "I've got a great title for you :Waste of Space" savage af.
What about Stuart's bestie? The story-line for Laura Giacomo brings unexpected depth to the movie. Meeting her bio Dad only to have him hit on her is so messed up. Every time I watch Pretty Woman, I always think, yep that's how her ass ended up being a hooker (As if the two characters are the same.)
Vincent D'nofrio gives a kickass performance as the Stuarts drunk older abusive brother who sobers up the "hunting" trip and realizes he has issues and both him and his Dad need help.
That movie so fucking funny and out there but so grounded with heartfelt moments.
SNL PLEASE put these other Jordan sketches up because of 'The Last Dance'. 😆😆🤣🤣
Sometimes, I just HAVE to rewatch this.

I can’t tell if I’m crying from laughter or from the power of the affirmation
CLASSIC! I remember the funniest part Jordan trying to keep a straight face, especially repeating after Franken. I really wish that Franken & Davis would return to the staff of SNL-- if not as performers, as writers. They can use it about now.
Back when people were able to perform their skits without staring at the cue cards, and "breaking" wasn't the only way to get laughs.
Thats why i loved Phil Hartman...i think hevwas the best vast member ever. He would sell whatever character he played and wouldn't break character. Love and miss you Phil.
