I love the look of this pattern! Love it without beads, but adding the beads might make it coordinate better with my bead bezeled cabochons. Anxious to give it a try. TFS!
can i move the weight up the braid so the braid can coil in my lap, but the weight is still pulling on the braid? I use a binder clip with weight attached to that.
You know I'm not sure we've ever tried that look. I do worry it would look too bulky, especially with this particular style where the cords are quite thick already and the braid isn't beaded. It might make a better experiment for a kumi project where most of the length is beaded, then a knot in an unbeaded end portion might not stand out as much. We've got a lot of tutorials on beaded kumihimo projects if you're new to the style: ruclips.net/p/PLdGWVJ-tb1bHGMZuegvUqiksO7yV7p86O
Yes varying the order like that will give you a different look. It's difficult to predict how different without testing it. We do a lot a short one-inch test braids when developing patterns to see what look we like best.
I really enjoy making the kumihimo braid--but when it comes to trying to finish it with a cap and finding--crazy ugly...Thanks for sharing this project with us.
I'm just getting into Kumihimo, and your videos have been invaluable! I don't see any indication that your braids do this odd thing that mind do, though. Hope you can give me direction. When I pull on the finished braid, it lengthens a great deal (even when I'm using the weight). It ends up narrower and the knots (if that's what you call all those intersections of cord) pull apart. It looks good, but when I want to keep the tighter, thicker version that comes out before I pull on it, I'd have to make sure that the jewellery never gets pulled on. I don't see that happening. Can you help?
Hi! The only thing I can think of is making sure you have a tight tension at the top of the board. The type of cord you are using and the heaviness of the weight may have a factor in the end result. I'm so sorry I can't be of more help, I have not had this issue before. There can be a little give but it shouldn't be much. Thanks for watching!
You’ve probably moved on by now, but for posterity ... you could try manually stretching your cords before hooking them on the loom. This may or may not work depending on what type of cord you are using-how much ‘give’ it has. I read this tip on a kit I was using and I think it helped some because my former projects had the problem you mentioned.
Ok that cord is expensive and I don’t want to waste it just BC I’m just now learning how to make one of these so how much cord do I really need ? I have a small wrist.
If you have some satin rattail pieces that are shorter than the 18 ft long ones we used and you're wondering if they're long enough what I'd suggest is measuring them and then making an inch long test braid to see how much cord that takes up. Multiplying that by 6 to 7 inches should give you an idea of how much cord you'll need. The lengths used in kumihimo vary a lot depending on the thickness of your cord, the size of your disk, and the amount of tension you use, so we always recommend doing a test braid.
Sorry for not measuring. For this project we started with uncut cords that are 5.5 meters long kept braiding until we got to a length we liked. There was a lot of cord left over. You can see the cord here: beadaholique.com/products/rosy-gold-kumihimo-bracelet
I don't like the way the binding on the ends are done. There is a better way to bind the end and get it round rather than having a spiral bulge. That inequality of circumference could cause a problem getting the ends to hold securely. I do like the toggle ends, and magnetic catches would also work.
Why find a midpoint on the cords and make a knot??? I am confused. Is it because it is seeded? because on the other videos that are regular and not seeded, you don't make the midpoint knots. Thank you for a reply
It's just a small difference in technique, you can do it either way. Might help if I write out the process. In this video Kat starts with 6 cords that are each six yards long, then she gathers them up folds them in half and knots the midpoint, creating 12 cords that are 3 yards long. That's one way to do it. The other way to do it, which we've shown in some of our other videos, would be to cut 12 individual 3 yard long cords, then tie the ends together. Either way will work fine, the number of cord ends and their length is what's most important.
Love your instruction on this - but I have a rather dumb question: why didn't you make that into a necklace instead of a bracelet? I think it would look beautiful as a necklace.. Just my opinion.
This was simply an artistic decision. You can certainly apply the same techniques to make a necklace. We have Kumihimo necklace videos here: beadaholique.com/search?type=product&q=kumihimo+necklace&_=pf&pf_t_product_type=0-Product-Type%3AVideo Thanks for watching!
😹😹😹nope you used 4 yards and have 2 yards left over. You said it the other way around. 😹😹😹I do stuff like that all the time. 😹😹😹can you tell me what would you be able to make with only 2 yards that are left? I really love the look of this braid. Thank you! 💝🥰🤗
Hi! Thanks for letting us know. I will review this video to see what we can add to help others. I am thinking you could make a key chain with the shorter amounts or do a bracelet focal and add chain to either side. Those are the first things that come to mind. I hope it helps spur some creativity!
Those poor scissors are on their last leg. When you gotta saw at nylon cord, it's time to sharpen or replace them..hehe. nice video!! Thank you so much!!
I've made a mistake in the process, and the braid wasn't tight spiral anymore. And you know what? It still looks cool, because it's not just a braid now but a DNA-string! Pity I don't know what I did wrong exactly. =( You know, to do it again...
12 warp can be frustrating at first even if you're used to the standard 8 warp technique we teach. @@nonyabizness.original Oh you're so welcome, I hope the diagrams are helpful! We love video as a teaching tool but sometimes it helps to see a technique in several different ways. Good luck with your project!
Also, there is an easy way to start the braid with a split ring for bracelet latch BUT NO ONE has a method to attach a split ring on the END for the other end of a patch. You are failing halfway finished. Your huge knots are UGLY! I would appreciate a response...
Why are you calling a spiral braid a round braid? They are two different styles. You demonstrate the making of a spiral braid, not a round one. You'd better go back to braiding school and learn something about what you're talking about. 🤬
I'm also gonna be doing kumihimo DNA warp braids with 20+ strands & I can't wait to post the videos.
Fun!

Thanks for the video ! But I have a feeling that if I just want to use a couple of colors that I would get very confused😞

You can, I just caution it if you are using beads at any point, you don't want to crack your beads or warp you braid if the clip is too tight.
Great demonstration. Thank you so much.
I really like the one that has the 11/0 on it. How and when do you add them? And is there a specific way to push them down?
Would a gathering knot on the ends to finish it work or would it make it too bulky?

She had 2 yards left on one half of her 6. That means there was another 2 yards on the other bobbin. 2 yards plus 2 yards is 4 yards left over.

Sounds like may not have had much weight hanging on your braid, or perhaps the weight detached at some point and that changed the tension mid-project
whoa! this is quite lengthy.. but its a nice video
I call this type of kumihimo braid the DNA braid because it looks like DNA.
arghhh! no can do. using different colors, i lost my mind trying. i could not see a pattern of moving the cords developing at all.
