I think I finally got an idea on how to improve those already insaely good batreps: When showcasing the armies at the start, how about adding a screenshot from Tabletop Admiral? Would help a bit to understand all of the army a bit faster.
10:47 Jacob should've been allowed to choose who had priority this turn. "If the result is a tie in subsequent turns of the game, then the choice of which player gets Priority will go to the player who did not choose who had Priority in the previous turn"
Thanks for pointing this out! We got this one mixed up and thought whoever had priority would win the roll off. This is one of the best changes of this edition. It gives a lot more decision making and player control into the game.
I disagree and love to see Sauron at lower points! I’ve taken him to 550 in the previous edition and loved it. Going to attempt 500 next month but not sure how it’ll go!!
I think that game was about Barad dur being good, it was about Alex being the Magnus Carlsen of MESBG. Brilliant battle report, my new favourite from this channel! Loved to see Sauron on the table.
I question conquests play this game. He kinda gave the win imo. Charging saroun with his heros knowing he bearly competes letting alex do lots of free damage with saroun. Jacob should of focused on killing the orcs imo and stalled saroun out. Qauter him fast and end the game with a model advantage.
This batrep is a good example of anyone saying Sauron is worse this edition haven't played with the new monster rules. The sheer consistency of monsters to get where they want and kill who they want with barge and hurl is incredibly strong.
Barge change absolutely increases threat, no argument there. If you do not respect it and protect the additional targets a Barge now guarantees threat on, you will get beat up. Hurl for Sauron in the previous edition was used to take out entire battle lines with a high amount of consistency. It now can only threaten one target, which is good but also... Sauron can already do that with Chill Soul. What he needed was the ability to deal with crowds of enemies who were unwilling to engage him. Thats what he lost. That and losing higher quality, cheaper archers. Losing a point of Might off his secondary support caster who is more expensive and no longer has March. Both of these casters had their reliability on some of the spells they had, and power from the effect of some of them reduced. And Sauron's Flames of Evil BPA being nerfed inexplicably...
Cheers! Actually realised that the army contained some of my very first painted models from the edition (the orcs) and my last painted models of the edition (sauron himself). Really happy with how the NMM went on his armour! Alex
Awesome battle report! Hard luck with your dice Jacob :p Would have been cool to see a heroic channeling or two from Elrond though. I think the change is not too useful in a lot of cases because the effects of a lot of magic has been nurfed but is very useful for a caster with a very powerful spell and limited will like Elrond. Would have been a better choice for Elrond than either heroic strike or defence I reckon. Since it would definitely go off with a 6 it would either put Sauron on his butt so he can’t strike blows or drain a huge amount of will from him to prevent him doing chill soul. If Sauron is prone and can’t strike blows in the ensuing fight it’s even better damage prevention than heroic defence and it gives you a chance to hope he makes a bad duel role with no repercussions if he doesn’t (better than trying to improve chances in the duel role with a strike which is now far less likely to have any effect and face damage if the plan doesn’t work). All the better if you hit a few extra orcs with it at the same time. One nice channeled Wrath in the middle of the orcs out of range of Sauron when the lines first clashed properly could have swung the tide a lot too. Hit the banner with it and the banner effect is lost for the turn while prone (which was also clutch for Sauron a few times) and quite a few orcs could have died in one turn from the strength 2 hits plus having no banner and taking double damage. Losing a few too many orcs at the start like that could start a nice snowball of your warriors winning many more fights and mopping them up much faster with less losses - then break for the objectives when there are not enough orcs to stop you and Sauron can’t be everywhere at once. That would have been my approach. Easy to say from the couch though… Sauron is still a beast, never any guarantees with him on the board. And you had some hard luck with some very important and very close roles that didn’t go your way. Great game! Super fun to watch :)
Today, Conquest Creations hits us with another classic Jacob loss. It's now a trope of the genre. Still rooting for you, my friend ! Great batrep as always
I love the cuts between the closeups, and the Ken Burns slow movement pans or zooms. Gives interest even in a static shot. One thing that might help as far as the bigger picture of where the tight shot is occurring on the board, is a shot of the whole board with a light semi-transparent grid overlaying that shot, and a tinted section of the part of the grid in which the shot occupies. This would be a pic-in-pic in one corner. The tinting of the grid sections could all be done ahead of time one, and then you just slide that graphic into the timeline replacing the graphic that was there as you make the cuts between camera angles. Objective markers could be added to that grid. Anyway, the point of this is for the viewer to not lose track of where the tight shot is on the board, in the bigger picture of the battle.
Thanks for the comment, you can see the dice that were rolled behind the miniatures there. We always try to keep these battle reports as consise as possible so often times cut out some dice rolls
20:47 What was that Numenorean archer in the foreground doing this turn being as he didnt move behind Sauron to zone him off from the rest of the battle and protect Isildur? We skipped the shooting phase because there was none so did that guy... try to charge Terror for no reason and fail?
If only Sauron could be that consistent each game. Glad to see barad dur play, but that did feel like dice were in evils favor by a decent margin. This matchup I dont think did justice to whirl of steel, but was a great game and fun watch!
There were some choices that made huge impacts, both to dice and to positioning. I dont think this is a scenario where LA needed to fight Sauron to win the game. The opposing list didnt substantially outnumber him and the early Chill Souls are worth a higher percentage of the enemy army as you even the numbers out. The enemy committing heroes to Sauron, failing to tie fight, two-handing anyway, then him rolling a decent set of duel dice for the win was basically the dream. He got to threaten multiple costly heroes who were weaker than him for the entire game. Even baited Might out of Elrond and got to kill Isildur in the same turn due to poor positioning.
Thanks for the bat rep and Congratz on Kickstarter. Seems Whirl of Blades didn't have much effect this time. Jacob.... didn't you lose another key fight in another recent bat rep when you two handed again? 🙂
Thanks for the comment! It didn't make a huge difference this game, it would have been really nice to have got it off against Sauron to go through his D10. Two handing got better in this edition because if you roll a 6 it stays as a 6. That other batrep was a crazy roll! I reckon it was much less than a 1% chance to have lost that one in the big last alliance battle!
@@ConquestCreations Ah yes sorry you are right I forgot about the new edition rules of keeping the 6 when two handing. still reading the rules book. Thanks for the reply and thanks again for the best Batreps on YT.
I reckon this video is very solid proof of the power of Sauron in this new edition. The changes to monsters as well as making him Dominant is a massive buff for him. At Battle Hardened which was the last big tournament of the last edition we have a Barad Dur army win the 63 player event. Now with all the buffs I reckon we will see him topping even more events.
Good question, overall I like the change. There were a lot of models where it was a no brainer descion to take the spear and shield (Or spear and bow) and as soon as something is an auto choice it isn't adding anything to the game. Now that you can't do that there is a lot more thinking to do in list writing. Spears are great but "do I really want 10 D4 orcs that will get rinsed by shooting or when the front line falls" is a lot more interesting to think about than "I'll spend 10 points and all my orcs are covered". There are obviously some unfortunate collections that are collateral damage. I have 10 Osgiliath Veterans that have spear and shield that are illegal and I popped all the shields off my Fountain Court guard. Ultimately I think its worth it for what it adds to the game.
Oh man I didn't know that. Pretty ruthless. Both the Battle of Pellinor Fields and Osgiliath came with Morannan Orcs. The scenarios in those boxes instruct you to build orcs with spear and shield. Must be some new orc boxes coming out soon, eh?😂

The rules for two handing specify a natural 6 will remain as a 6. Given that I rolled a 5 it would be reduced to a 4 then the point of might would return it to a 5

The higher the point level, the more models on the board. The more models on the board, the more chances to roll for the whirl. The more chances for whirl, the more 6s get rolled and the better the rule is. A fair few scenarios can be won just by getting to the objectives faster and then dying, and Last Alliance not having cavalry or having March on two of their mandatory higher cost heroes means they can sometimes be ignored by the enemy to circumvent whirl. Also, mandatory "get gud, just roll 6s" that a reductive discussion on a dice game warrants. Some games, you will roll 6s every time, others you never will. More they are played the more they average out.
Negative. One dice in the duel resolution and one dice in the wound resolution. The reroll was used on the initial roll to gain a max potential wound increase, so cannot be used to push for wounds in the secondary roll.
I know you defending the crap out of this edition, but i wanted to build out the Defenders of Helm’s deep army because i have all the models for it (except Haldir). So i have 20 Galadhrim warriors and 24 Rohan warriors so i thought in my little brain it’s going to be a good mix until i very quickly realised that only 33% can have the Lothlorien keyword😂😂 and this supposed to be the movie ,,accurate” edition. I haven’t watched the movie recently but I’m pretty confident that they had more elf warriors than rohirrim (500elf 300rohirrim) every time i try to give this edition a chance it’s letting me down 😂
Thanks for the comment, I'm not attacking or defending anything just sharing my thoughts. You may have also been disappointed by the Defenders of Helms Deep Legendary legion in the previous edition as well however, as it had the same restriction.
I do think calling Heroic Defence rather than Strike lost the game there. That and doing two handed at the end. Does feel like Whirl of Blades should be a 5+ to be honest.

While I agree with this, I actually think Last Alliance scales exponentially with point level where Barad-dur will end up having a reverse bell curve. LA hates being 600 points and loves being 1000 points. Barad-dur loves being 600-650 points, lost a lot of options between 700-950 but at 1000 gets to flatten out and use some of the new Monsters so goes back to being kind of comfortable just lacking the huge offensive power spikes it could previous get in turns where Sauron and a Fell Beast Witch-King could Heroic Move hurl through a battle line to annihilate someone's heroes... Last Alliance at 600 needs to take two expensive heroes, and they are great but the model count is low so you are highly subject to spikes of RNG (especially if you are choosing not to fight warriors and duel Sauron while applying a penalty to yourself, thats always rough). At 600, Barad-dur in the old edition didnt have much in the way of options in the list building stage, it was always going to be an Orc Captain. So they lost access to basically nothing and got the Dominant buff for Sauron to make objective contest numbers more favourable. And because there are so few things on the board, Sauron will more often be the only valid target.
The units / characters that aren’t in the movies will be coming in a third army book called “Armies of Middle-Earth,” that will likely be coming in the new year.
