I can’t hear this (yet another *brilliant* piece of music/lyrics from Jeff Lynne and ELO) without thinking of my beloved, who no longer shares this physical plane. I just got to hear this song on Casey Casem's American Top 40 from around March 22 1986. Absolutely magical even though there is nothing complicated in the arrangements. Jeff Lynne is an incredible artist !!
Ha ha..nothing complicated you say. Well the lyrics are great are you stated. There is deep meaning here. Yes the tune offers sweet flesh. But the seed of this fruit offers so much more. A leader can read the seed. It goes over the head for a follower. The artists doesn't quite know either. His subconscious created this.
Some facts about Jeff Lynne (ELO)...First, he is a very humble man, simply because this Music Genius is not interested in fame, the limelight, and money, he just loves to create great music. Jeff Lynne is one of the most versatile musicians ever, this is why he is considered by his peers to be among the greatest. He didn't stick to one style of music because, after decades, it gets boring. Jeff has done progressive Rock, Symphonic Rock - Pop, New wave, and Disco. Everything he does turns to gold. He even flirted with Country music. From 1972 to 1986 (During 14 years) Jeff Lynne's Electric Light Orchestra has had more top 40 hits than any other group in the world... 51 years later they still play in sold-out Arenas, festivals and Stadiums. During Jeff Lynne's ELO 2019 Tour, many reviews agreed in saying they are the best live Classic Rock Band in the world still touring and Jeff Lynne is a Music Genius( From Forbes Magazine and the Washington Post). ELO is in the Rock Hall of Fame. Lynne is on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame and Birmingham Walk OF Fame. Jeff Lynne’s ELO won the Best Classic Rock Band plus Lynne won the best Songwriter award ( ASCAP ) in 2019 for his fantastic contribution over the years. In October of 2020, Jeff Lynne has been made an officer of The Order Of The British Empire for his extraordinary contribution to music. He previously has received three Ivor Novello Awards, which celebrate songwriters and composers, including the award for outstanding services to British music. He created the best Super Group of all time with his best friend George Harrison, The Traveling Wilburys. The Legends in the Music Industry call Jeff Lynne the best overall Musician ever and a Producer Extraordinaire. Jeff Lynne has written and produced many hit songs for music legends like George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, Joe Walsh, Brian Wilson, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Bryan Adams, Aerosmith, Del Shannon, the Everly Brothers, The Beatles, and so many others...
So happy for you for discovering ELO. I've been a massive fan since 1976 and love them just as much today as I always did. Jeff Lynne's music is timeless.
ELO's last breaths. Jeffs unforgotton highlight on Balance of Power. Timeless eighties sounds and as always a perfect melody and arrangement....Jeff => Genius
@Mark Becto, yeah last hit - and last original (remaining) line-up - including Bev on drums. To be honest, by 1985 most people didn't expect anymore songs from ELO.
Is there anyone else in music with such futuristic lyrics think about the time most of these songs were written I remember when we had one phone in the street ❤❤❤😊
Jeff Lynne is a 'god' in music .Brilliant songwriter .Producer .I saw electric light in Stafford ,UK ,in 1978 .I was 'in awe ' of them .They were AMAZING
WHAT memories, this was all over the radio, during my Freshman yr at Cal State Chico. I want to jump into a time machine, go back to Chico, Ca; 1983, and NEVER, EVER; come back!!!
Even though Jeff's voice is still fabulous, I have a feeling that this song is too difficult to sing at this point, it would end up straining the voice so they may avoid it live.
Love this catchy piece of mid-80s synth-pop. Even though ELO were winding down at this point, all the ingredients are there. Very much reminds me of 'Electric Dreams' (another great track from this era) while the instrumental section makes me think of 'Telstar' (which I doubt is coincidence given the theme of communications satellites). That said, I'd love to hear this given the full late 70s orchestral treatment too :)
I find it similar to Building a Bridge to Your Heart by Wax: both songs are by artists on the forefront of melodic pop in the mid-70s, and were using synths to achieve the same effect in the mid-80s.

Agreed.
Never listened to any song on repeat so much, one of the top songs ever recorded, no other song like it.
I think America is suffering because of its technology. The wall is really about locking them in. I pity them. Calling America is about offering them wisdom in my book. But nobody is answering.
This song makes me miss my friends in the States.
one of the most underrated of ELO's hits, especially given that it was done in the synth pop heavy 80's.
That's the best thing about it.
Needs more orchestra
And to think. Jeff only made this album to forefill his contractual obligation. ELO were on the verge of splitting up. It really is a great album.

Epic ELO! Sounds great in 2024, as it did in 1985.
Jeff has been probably the greatest song writer for the past 50 years. Never has got the recognition he deserve but all of us know it.
