THAT'S A MEAL TO ME ALL I WOULD NEED IS PIECE CORN BREAD & GLASS TEA & I'LL BE GOOD TO GO...THANKS
WHY ARE YOU YELLING???
@@Daswassuphomie I'M NOT YELLING DEAR , I'M IN MY 60'S & I HAVE TO HAVE THE LARGER LETTERS SO I CAN SEE & ALL THIS IS NEW TO ME. I WAS UNAWARE THAT CAPITAL LETTERS MEANT ANYTHING OTHER THAN CAPITAL LETTERS. WHY PEOPLE ALWAYS LOOKING FOR THE WORST IN OTHERS ..... HAVE GOOD NIGHT....MY BAD
@@deniceb1489 THERE IS NO NEED FOR TEA WITH SOUP.
Thankyou for showing me how to make this for my kids. We are excited. Making it right now. Hugs God Bless
Yes SERIOUSLY
Just the soup and the cornbread...man that's all I need
Made this tonight. I did add a bay leaf out of habit when I make a soup. I garnished with hickory smoked bacon and diced green onion. It was absolutely delicious. Made jalapeño cornbread to go along for the ride..... I like this channel. Down to earth guy I feel like I could drink a beer with and talk about cooking.
Serve beans alone with cornbread
That's how I cooked it! Bacon and green onion on top - yum. I added 1 small shredded carrot for color, and cornbread with real corn bits in it, home made butter.
I'd like to make my version of his chili for him with about 15 beers. I add hit italian sausage in the mix and use different beans. His collards are the only way I do them too
I’m making it today, glad I’m not the only one that thought bacon would help it
I'm 76 years old and have been cooking beans/ham since I was in my teens. I love your presentation, and you can take this to the bank... I'll be adding Liquid Smoke to my next pot (tomorrow). Thanks for a great video.
My mother used to cook this dish with cornbread. GOOD STUFF! A side of collard greens with a little bacon grease and garlic sounds good too
Gotta have some bacon grease in the soup, I fry a half pack of thick cut bacon, set aside and pour grease in soup. I use the cooked bacon to garnish.
Best soup I ever had. It’s so filling that we didn’t need anything else with it.
I know this is 3 years old, but, I followed this recipe today. My first time making Bean with Ham Soup, and I’ve received so many positive comments, I’m half expecting Robert Irvine or Gordon Ramsey to come busting through the door wanting to put it on their menu. Thanks for all of the great videos!!!
My Mom made navy beans soup two or three times in the winter she did put carrots in it, but I really like the way you boiled the beans and eliminated the need for soaking over night, thanks for the tip. It looks great.
Of all the cooks and chefs on RUclips, watching you do your thing feels much more authentic, like something we can do any day of the week and have no problem doing it how you do. LOVE these videos, and looking forward to trying this recipe as it get cold out!
Thank you and enjoy! :)
Niemenz-
That’s exactly how I feel.
You expressed it perfectly!! 👏🏾👏🏾
niemenz, you are so right. AB makes it so much easier to make. I tried some of his recipes & they are so good.
I always share AB's videos over others because I think he makes it less intimidating for friends that aren't as experienced in the kitchen
Explains everything…. Agree 100% with ya
White beans is my brother-in-law's specialty. We eat ours with chopped red onion and cornbread. If we have a smoked hamhock, we use that. Soooo good!
I'm a big soup fan ! Looks wonderful , needs nothing but a spoon and a mouth lol
Sorry Miss Carol but I gotta have some hot sauce with that. 🤫
Got my ham bone got my liquid smoke got my veggies, got my navy beans & stock 👍. I’m all in tomorrow morning. Thx 🙏. A little bit of fibre before the Xmas food coma. Best recipe.
You don't use navy beans tho- it's northern white beans.
Navy beans are just a bit smaller than northern beans. They are interchangeable. Especially if you can’t find northern beans.
back in the long ago, I was a cook at a small town diner that had a daily soup special. Always scratch made. The greatest compliment I ever received in my cooking career was when a regular asked if there was any of yesterday's navy bean soup left over.
Navy bean soup is so delicious ! Southern girl here, love all beans, peas & legumes ! I Cook them with smoked meat & andouille sausage ! They are a complete meal packed protein, B-complex vitamins like folates, pyridoxine, thiamin (vitamin B-1), pantothenic acid, riboflavin, and niacin. Healthy & Deliciousness upon deliciousness !
Yep yep Linda! you got it. I'm placing an order Monday for a case of Andouille Sausage. I so miss them :)
Do you cook with northern beans or navy beans? Same vitamins in both? Here in Texas I don’t think I’ve seen the andouille sausage.
@@JohnDavis-yz9nq They have a lot of Andouille Sausages to choose from at your H-E-B in TX. That's where I was just buying mine from. I like the Northern Beans because of the size.
John Davis
Krogers, Heb & Mkt Basket carry them in Texas john !
This is truly a stand-alone meal, right down to the last drop! Thank you!
Agreed! 👏🤤
I have never made northern beans before, usually it’s pinto beans in my house. But I had my leftover ham bone from thanksgiving and a bag of northern beans so decided to try your recipe because it had liquid smoke and I love that stuff! Came out absolutely delicious! Thanks for sharing 😃
When AB talks, you listen. The man said Liquid Smoke is a must have... and he ain't lying
For me, some cornbread and a bottle of hot sauce at hand.
Looks like a Great Winter meal with some Good Italian Bread.
Yep! You got it. This dish will tuck you into bed right after too lol. Enjoy!
Or corn bread 😋 mmm
I like to crumble my cornbread up in the soup
Hi, AB. I'm a first timer. Simple, basic, rustic ingredients = comfort food. Similar to split pea soup, substituting the navy beans. Cold winters and your soup with cornbread, pure heaven. ALSO, very nutritious! Thanks pal.
I cook for my kids and grandkids. I used this recipe and it turned out really delicious, and even my 2 year old grandson liked it. I used smoked turkey legs which I smoked on my smoker. I'll do this one again for sure. I don't know that I've ever seen a two year old eating beans like this...Great video AB!
Yesss!!! You took me back to my granny’s house. Lord I miss her. I’m going to try this tomorrow. Looks delicious!!
Don't you just love when food takes you back? Enjoy!
Yessss my queens RIP we love our beans
That looks delicious!
I never cared for beans most my 60+ years of life. But now it's a favorite!
Smoked ham shank really makes for appetizing aroma and flavor.
I just recently bought a bottle of Hickory flavored liquid smoke.
Cornbread muffins are perfect with bean soup. I like to add sweet corn and cheddar cheese to my cornbread recipe....im getting hungry!
❤it’s cold outside. Cornbread and beans. Yum!
You added celery and onions which I always do. Try adding small chopped carrots as well. Texture, taste and color are awesome! Nice video, as always!
This is great! I can have this for home AND work. And if flavored correctly, beans taste even better the next day with some cracklin cornbread!
Agreed! Merry Christmas 👏😉😋
It freezer great too. I love to cook. My Mom great cook. She made fabulous pies. I have never found anyone who could beat her on her pie baking. She was from south.
Boy you hit this one out the park!! I’m making this today w/pan of cornbread while I hang my Christmas decorations... peace n blessings brother! Happy Holidays
That's perfect! These will keep you warm as you work outside. Nice and enjoy!
I am to Trus me. LOOKS AMAZING SIR
Thank you
Love the look of those beans....going to make this today! This really brings back great memories. I grew up on beans. Many of our suppers consisted of beans, fat back and fried cornbread. Washed down with ice cold tea. Many thanks for the recipe!
I made this dish, this Friday and it turned out perfect the slow cooking is what does it. Fall off the bone like you said, the meat peeled right off the bone. I used liquid smoke for the first time making beans and I also used the trinity Onions, celery, and green peppers. My daughter and her husband thoroughly enjoyed the dish. Thank you good cooking and good eating. Have a good day 😅
I’m making this in the crockpot tomorrow, it’s snowing here and this will be perfect for the weather with some cornbread and collard greens on the side. I trust his work, I’ve tried several recipes and it’s always amazing. I hope to see a cookbook soon.
Damn i'm ready to stick my spoon through my computer screen.
Lmbo! Thanks Jazzi RnD
Great Northern and cornbread 👌 👍
Lol dont break the computer 😂
Exactly what I want to do right now!🤤
Funny!!!
My Mom's Parents were from the south. We had this exact same soup using the leftover Easter Ham bone growing up. We usually served it with the family cheesy garlic bread recipe. Your version looks delicious!
I love this recipe, I have made it both with and without the liquid smoke. Like it both ways but prefer without. I love listening to him talk through the recipes, his voice is calming and keeps me from getting anxious lol
This brings back memories of my mother making this in the '50s! I have been making it ever since. Very homey and comforting! And yes, definitely have to have cornbread with it.
And I am a Southern "California" gal. Thanks AB
I wouldn’t have changed a thing. It was so good I could smell it through the computer.
Lol Thank you and enjoy Susan :)
yummy i think we need SMELLAVISION on this one
I haven't had Bean Soup since my mother died 9 years ago. She never measured anything so I had to watch her and write down my favorite recipes for myself but, for some reason, never got around to Bean Soup. I do remember she added a can of diced tomatoes, juice and all. She also added a bay leaf. Can't eat much processed meats but I'm hungry for it now.
That looks sooooo delicious! I would serve that with ANOTHER bowl full!
Make a pan of cornbread and that's a wrap!!
Lol I see you already know! Thank you Brenda :)
That's a fact AB 4 office
Yep
Made this for my family and everyone loved it! I used chicken stock instead of broth and added carrots as well. So yummy!
That was regular table fare at our house when I was growing up. Sometimes mom used Navy beans and sometimes Great Northern. We had it over cornbread with chopped onions sprinkled on top. Mouth watering good! Thanks.
Looks awesome AB. My wife worked as a civilian at an Air Force base. One of the bestselling items served by the base cafeteria was their house made "Air Force" bean soup. it sold out every time they made it. She told me how good it was, and I often asked her to bring me some, but it always sold out. in 30 years, i never got to try it!
I love this recipe. Just a few changes. I use the "trinity -- onion, green pepper & celery" sauteed first and added to beans and use Andouille and or Tasso Ham & Cajun seasoning.
We are having ham for Christmas an I can't wait for the navy bean soup ham an kale
Enjoy! 🤤🔥👌
I'm making mine in the slow cooker
Thanks AB! I was looking for something to do with my ham bone and I’m so happy I found this video. Even though I didn’t have liquid smoke it was still incredible. I plan to get some for next time. This recipe will definitely be in my rotation. Thanks again!
I enjoy you man, thanks for being to the point with decent explanations of "why" and bringing a little good humor and great food!
I just made me a pot exactly like you said, with a Christmas ham hock, and it may be the most delicious dish
I've ever made. Just as yummy as it looks!
I would like to tell you how I enjoy watching your cooking videos. I especially enjoy the way you go through all the ingredients before hand. You go step by step which helps me when I am trying to follow you. Thanks for sharing your gift of cooking for cooks who hate to cook. Peace and blessings.
Toodie.
Thank you Toodie :)
This navy bean and ham soup is absolutely out of this world!! We all loved it. I made my first pot (DBL batch) last week and I’m making another one today. I have been blessing people with this soup for dinner and they all love it. My husband and I cannot wait to check out more of your recipes AB, 😋 Thanks for making it simple and so tasty.
This was fabulous!! I’m so glad I found this recipe!
I really like how he explains his recipes. Makes it so easy!
I've been wanting to find this for a long long time! My mom made this all the time. So good! Love your channel. Sometimes we would put sausage I'm ours to give it that slight spicy goodness.
Thank you Dave. This here is a true classic soup. You've got to try it! Thank you again and enjoy!
You are the best cook on RUclips! Thank you!
Wow, thank you for thinking that :)
I think that I need to stop watching your videos chef your food looks soooo good! Im hungry again. thanks for the recipe and stay blessed
Thank you for the smile this morning :) Enjoy!
Navy beans are our go-to winter comfort meal! We always eat them with a good buttermilk cornbread!
Dan, your comment nailed it bro. Enjoy!
Made this first time over weekend. Very good, i added chopped carrots and used minced garlic. Also used costco 1/4 ham i had frozen a year ago, and honey baked hambone. That liquid smoke really gives it that extra kick
Made this a second time using 4 smoked turkey winglets(near as big as drumsticks). I think it came out better than the hame(which was great), also a cheaper and slightly healthier option than the ham
Good recipe - I've been making and eating this (almost identical) for decades. Only difference is I split and chop one medium carrot to go with the celery and onion, and I smush the beans a little. Make the cornbread while the soup is cookin', and you don't need anything else for dinner… Yum! Made me hungry just to watch the video!
Oh my goodness!! I've been searching for a recipe just like this. This is THE best ham and bean soup I've ever had! And, the cornbread just topped it off.
By itself with cornbread!!!! A meal in itself. Awesome 👏🏻
Yep yep!
Winter is here and I will be using your recipe! Thank you AB!
When I was a kid our Christmas dinner was ham, beans, cornbread and fried taters! YUM YUM! I'll have to try this recipe for the beans. It looks great!
Yes we need you to make a cookbook! Love your cooking
Made the ham and bean with a twist. I found a new go to for my leftover smoked pulled pork. It was amazing.
Straight forward recipe and instructions anyone can follow! Reminds me of the soup my dad used to make! Thanks for those memories!
So happy I found you on RUclips when I was searching for a great hambone bean soup recipe. I love your presentation & bought some liquid smoke like you suggested. It’s cooking now & smells amazing! I’ll let you know how it tastes & how my friends liked it!
My Mom made some AWESOME Navy Bean Soup... She always used Smoke Butt for the ham... Great video; thanks!
I just finished cooking a 10lb ham for Christmas and Have a leftover bone....glad I found this video! I'm making this for the weekend and I will eat it as a bowl of soup with cornbread....
Enjoy Kim. I'm getting ready to make some Black Eyed Peas. Mmmmmm :)
Made it today. simple and flavorful!!!
I was a dishwasher at family restaurant age 18. I made soups and cooked roasts cook and pealed potatoes all my managers recipe she was great the bean soup was a personal favorite of mine.
I fix mine with skillet fried cornbread!!! Looks so good AB!!!! You've done it again. Thank you so much 😍
I need to do some Skillet Fried Cornbread. Great idea and Thank you Terri :)
@@SmokinandGrillinwithAB you're welcome!! #soulfoodsister
Is that called hot water corn bread.
My granny said
@@kelleybright3113it sure can be. Depending on the ingredients. Hot water cornbread is made with hot water and cornmeal and a little sugar, only. Regular cornbread fried is made with all the ingredients that's on a package of cornbread and has milk in it. I love to make both!!!! Lol
AB you're my favorite RUclips chef. I didn't like white beans growing up. Hated seeing them for dinner knowing I'd have to eat them. This recipe is full of flavor, so thank you. I added two more small ingredient to mine, a finely diced potato (will desolve) and a 1/2 teaspoon of powdered cloves. Delicious. Paired this with cornbread and sweet tea.
Thanks for putting out there, some really good basic recipes!
I came across this video when I was browsing looking for a good Ham and bean soup to make to use some holiday ham bones I have in the freezer. I've never made it before as my father always made it using the holiday ham bones but he passed away in 2011 and then my mom took over making it but alas we moved to the other side of the country from my family for hubbies career 5 1/2 yrs ago so I have a few ham bones frozen in the freezer and want to make ham and bean soup. I really like how simple your recipe is and it seems pretty close to my dads version. I also liked your easy-to-follow cooking steps. Thank You. I am going to check out some of your other recipe videos. Thank You.
Looks like some thing that would great on a cold winters night, thanks for sharing your yummy soup.
👍😉😁
Yummy. That looks delicious. 😊
Made this soup yesterday. Found the liquid smoke. It was delicious. Can't stop eating it. Thank you so much for this recipe.
I have never used your method for rehydrating the beans until now and I like it a lot. I think the beans absorb more flavor using your method. Thank you for sharing this 👩🏼🍳❤️
Thanks, I was looking for a recipe that I can translate for leftover dark meat turkey from Thanksgiving. Plus i made my own turkey stock from the carcass and wings. Should turn out great!
This and also blackeyed peas are my go to bean soups on a cold winter day. Cooks in about thirty minutes in my InstantPot electric pressure cooker. Gotta have a big slice of cornbread on the side for moppin’ !!! Your soup looked perfect !
You got it right Bro! Cornbread for the moppin' :)
Another classic! Thanks, AB!
This is the first video of yours I have watched and I am impressed! You have made this delicious soup look so easy - I was doing a mental inventory of my kitchen as I watched. At the end, when you were plating, it looked so good I could almost smell the steam!! I'm definitely going to look for more of your videos! Thank you, thank you!
I made this last year and I'm getting ready to do it again today!!! It is really good. Made a huge batch and shared with friends and they loved it also! Thank you, Sir, for this great video!
Buttered corn bread is all this needs. Looks delish!

I will probably serve this with Fried cornbread corn on the cob ,a dish of fried potatoes with green orange and red wedges of Bell peppers and Tabasco sauce on the side ;yummy I’m getting hungry!🌸😋
Sounds good. What time is supper? 🤤
Dang, Man! That looks delicious! Got a Ham Bone in the freezer and I think everything else to make it! You are right about the liquid smoke. It stays good for a LONG time in the refrigerator and it isn't expensive! I know what we are having for supper tonight ~ of course with cornbread. The two together are plenty for a meal...nothing else needed! Thanks for the recipe and for taking the time to share it with others!
Yw Cheri and enjoy 😉 😊
