In April 2023 I was blessed to go on my first rock climbing trip to Red Rock Canyon in Las Vegas. We spent three days climbing some amazing and classic routes at Red Rock Canyon, which certainly lived up to its reputation as being one of the best climbing destinations in Nevada and the US.
At the end of Day 1 we were hiking back to our car when Ryan Wittich spotted Side Effects 5.10d (80ft, 24m), a huge boulder standing tall and proud on the Moderate Mecca wall (Lower Tier), and he knew he had to climb it.
The crux move of Side Effects 5.10d is getting over the roof at the 3rd bolt. Ryan attempted several different high heel hooks but ultimately couldn’t make the move - which seems to be common with people’s reviews on Mountain Project. The remainder of the route has good jugs but the pump is real.
Watching Ryan climb this classic Red Rock Canyon route as the sun was setting in the background of Red Rock Canyon was absolutely magical. When he finished, Ryan called it the “The Cherry” on top of a perfect day of climbing. I couldn’t agree more.

I don’t climb but I love red rock canyon. We go to Vegas not for Vegas but it’s central location in the middle of so many excellent locations in NV, AZ, UT, CA..

This was my first trip to Red Rock Canyon and it was absolutely stunning. Even though we were there to climb a hike would be amazing too. If you hiked the Calico Hills trail you'll pass a lot of climbers heading to the various crags, and you'll more than likely spot some climbers on the rock. And yeah, even though we stayed on the strip the only Vegasy thing we did was see a Cirque du Soleil show haha

came back here after climbing the route to see how you made the move from the rail for draw 3 into the jug. i ended up cheating on it and just pulled up on the draw (didnt actually make the move). its massive! tried left heal hook and got close but could never stick it. your vid cut this part - curious if you went L or R heal? or did you stick the move? what a sandbag of a route! haaa. your vid popped up on my feed which is what had me get out to try this climb. thanks for posting!

Thanks for watching! So this is actually my friend Ryan Wittich @wittich13 climbing the route. It's from our trip to Red Rock Canyon this past April. He actually did the exact same thing you did (pulling on the draw) through that move after trying a couple different heal hook attempts. That's definitely the crux move and it's HARD haha. But overall such a beautiful and cool route.

One of the main reasons I decided to climb this route is that I saw this video was published on RUclips, so if I failed, I could go back and watch the video to learn how to climb the route, and if I succeeded, I'd be able to compare my beta with someone else's. I haven't been able to find any video on how to climb the crux, so as far as I know, my video is the first: ruclips.net/video/omAPQ4dJBAc/видео.html
