Definitely some more merchant content especially higher levels since Im assuming stacking the same contracts might not work

The best method is to level everything to 20 then do a combat skill to 200 while using the knowledge points in stuff like alchemy or whatever feels like most of a chore.

This is how I've been training, still on episode 2, getting about 10-12 levels a day, using knowledge on alchemy.
Then, I've been using my money to buy out skills that I need for quests

This is true but it slows down a lot if you do not have an epic weapon close to your level

What you said is far from the best method, but it is good, yeah. Accounts i know that are 1300+ did other methods.

From what I’ve heard the merchant skill gets much more convoluted the higher level you get. At level 20 you don’t have all that many contracts, but that soon changes and it gets much more complex than “get 4 ribs contracts”. It’s a good skill don’t get me wrong, but the 3 knowledge you get per enemy you kill with combat may be hard to compete with long term ❤

Especially considering how later on in higher combat levels you start getting even more. I'm at Guard 212 and each monster gives me 6-7%

Merchant only gets convoluted if you dont know what you're doing, it just gives your more flexibility.

I do merchant and investigation spending knowledge on blacksmithing. I got 36 from 20 blacksmithing in two nights doing this.

I feel like the REALLY sweaty merchant methods are going to take quite a bit to be routed and fully developed. For now I'd just recommend stacking contracts for the same 2-3 items that route nicely into each other. Whatever seems the most digestible to you.
Soap and carrots seem to have the best xp scaling for a while into the early levels, and soap's endpoint is very close to where you can buy carrots, so those are a solid starting point to routing rn imo. To cap off the route, I'd recommend plates as they can be bought close to the carrots and are also sold very close to where carrots are sold, or the dolls which can be bought from the toy store you sell the carrots to and then you can teleport to the outskirts to finish the route.
If you still want to train merchant a bit while waiting for the board to refresh, a really quick single order you can pick up is beef ribs, which doesn't take long and keeps you right around the guild.
If the board isn't giving you the carrots you want, another route to consider would be optionally soap, to selling that soap at the rib stall and buying ribs (or just starting at the rib stall), to selling those ribs at the souvenir shop and buying either the badges from there or meat wraps from the next room over, both of which are sold right next to each other on the outskirts of town.
That's just probably for the early levels though, as you keep unlocking more items it will get harder to get what you want out of the board but better mini routes might pop up as well, I'm not sure yet. But before you get there and the actual experts get to it this is what I'd recommend starting with.
