Great channel. By far one of my favorites. Maybe because I agree with 99% of what you say . lol.. But I hate Gilbert Arenas takes. His pod brings nothing to bball convo. 1st Kobe did great greatly benefit from Hakeem’s teachings. I almost feel Kobe working with Keem made it known about his one on one teachings of footwork and back to basket moves. Kobe definitely came with a larger bag after the. Off season coaching. Also I listen to Bomani Jones podcast with episode with Gilbert he said he creates titles and convo just for clicks. You’re right he’s a clown for popularity. Gilbert has always been a ME guy.

The Lakers did Rondo and Dwight So Dirty, they were both playing amazing and got benched. Dwight in-depth talks about this and I think it's something you should cover and make a video on and see if it's true. They did this as well with DeAndre Jordan. A lot of great players are being forced out of the league. I think it's because the league doesn't want good defense anymore and would rather be more WWF entertainment instead of actual hard nose basketball. It would be great if you covered this as I'm sure you will find more players they did dirty It reminds me of how they pushed stephon marbury out of the league.

I’m a 24 year old NBA fan, I’ve been watching the NBA since about the 2009-2010 season. Your videos are definitely the absolute best I’ve seen as far as NBA history and commentary on the game itself goes, which I know you mentioned is your main focus with this channel. I very rarely comment on RUclips videos of any kind but I felt the need to give you a shoutout for how great your channel is and tell you how big of a fan I am. It’s also funny because I’m from around Boston and grew up a Celtics fan as a result, but I always had a great respect for the old NBA and was obsessed with MJ growing up and got me involved with learning the history of other legends of the game and honestly became a lowkey fan of your Lakers too because of their undeniable impact on the game. Keep up the good work, it’s definitely appreciated.

I think the greats from all eras (60s - 2000s) would still dominate in this era. The non-greats from those eras wouldn't get a sniff of the NBA today. It's the 2nd & 3rd tier players that are better, not the great players. I think the greats from the 60s- early 2000s would destroy the greats from the mid 2000s, 2010s & 2020s. Winning was more important to the greats from 80s-early 2000s. Now business, friendship & health is more important than winning.

I love the Dirk video. I've been a Mavericks fan since 2004 (when Steve Nash was still on the team), and I agree with everything said in this video. I loved Dirk, but I couldn't help but feel like he choked when it matters most and that his title window was closed. After years of disappointment, I couldn't help but have low expectations entering that postseason.
And yes, you mentioned how they beat Portland in the 1st round, but something often overlooked about that series is game 4. Dallas had like a 24 point lead late in the 3rd quarter, and while it looked like Dallas would take a commanding 3-1 series lead, they blew it. I remember as I was watching them collapse, all I could think was, "Oh boy. Here we go again. Another disappointing early exit from the playoffs." But no, instead of folding, Dirk seemed to step his game up after that game, and where the old Dallas would have let that disappointing loss kill their momentum, Dallas bounced back and won the next 2 games.
What happened the rest of the way was just Dirk playing out of his mind and exceeding all expectations, especially when they swept the Lakers in the 2nd round. I still thought that Miami would be too much for them, and halfway through the 4th quarter of game 2, I thought, "Yea, they're outmatched. But they went a lot further than people thought they would." But that 4th quarter comeback in game 2 was like something out of a movie. And the rest is history.
You're absolutely right. Dirk went from being just another very good future Hall of Famer to an absolute legend of the game after that postseason and Finals performance. I'm gonna have that signed framed photo of Dirk holding the trophy hanging up in my house until the day I die.

problem with prediction at around 16:20 is that teams are much more reluctant to have their players go for these records. they are way more concerned about doing the bare minimum with their star player to win the game to avoid as many chances for injury as possible. especially in the playoffs

KD is not in the GOAT conversation because:
    1. He was never considered the best player in the league.
    2. Couldn't win the title with the teams he played for other than the Warriors.

Plus they booed the heck out of him every time he returned, that's probably why he went off on them when with the Nets. But then years later there was an emotional tribute to him upon one of his visits.

    I disagree on LeBron's 4-6 record criticism.
LeBron's legendary status mainly came from making it to the finals 8 times in a row. However, he only made that because of playing in a very weak conference. This is why he was often crushed in the finals against the WC representative.
In fact, the finals were much easier than previous conference series for the Spurs in 2007 and 2014 and the Warriors in 2015, 2017, 2018

Or another title in LA if he didn’t have Westbrick. Bron won when he had help, what other superstar has won without any help? MJ had Scottie, Magic had Kareem, Kareem had Magic and the Big O, Bird had a super solid team, Duncan had Ginobli and Parker. When brons teammates played good he won and that’s not a flaw that should be used as a reason he’s not the goat. When he had a great teammate he won: both years in Miami he had Wade and Bosh, in Cleveland he had Irving and Love, and in LA he had AD. When his teammates played good, he won.

Hot take: The 2011 mavs ring was more about LeBron underperforming than Dirk being great. Now ik this sounds like hating but hear me out, Dirk averaged 26 in the finals which was good but not crazy. What I mean by this is that we’ve seen some insane matchups like Donovan Mitchell averaging 30 vs the nuggets in the 2020 playoffs and still losing bc Murray averaged 33 giving him 35, 40, 50. Murray outperformed Mitchell so bad where it seemed like Mitchell couldn’t have done anything better. That 2011 finals didn’t feel that way. It took an all time bad collapse from LeBron for the mavs to beat them in 6 games. LeBron averaging 17 ppg on bad efficiency and playing passive is putrid. If he averages his normal 25 in the regular season they might win but he stunk it up.

I think it's because the league doesn't want good defense anymore and would rather be more WWF entertainment instead of actual hard nose basketball..

If MJ's biggest critique is that he failed to win a series against Orlando after only playing 17 games in the season, then that's saying a lot. No matter how we try to spin, he was definitely not the same MJ. If any superstar takes 1 3/4 of a season off and fails to win a title, I'm not gonna hold it against them.

1st team: Magic, Jordan, Bird, Hakeem, Kareem (hard to fault your choices there)
2nd team: Curry, Kobe, Lebron, KG, Shaq
3rd team: Payton, DWade, Durant, Duncan, Russell or Wilt (toss up)
I would almost consider swapping Magic with Payton, moving Hakeem to the 5, and starting KG at PF, giving you one of the most dominant defensive teams imaginable... but I think having these more well-rounded lineups that work well together, is probably the better way to go. KG and DWade instead of West and Pippen are my only changes to your overall roster.

One point I wanna make point out. At about 28 minutes you talked about this era being more talented and that they may have help with designer drugs to keep theirs careers extended. IF that’s the truth then we’d have to old that against the younger generation of players since the players from the past never had this advantage. An advantage which a lot of ppl would even consider cheating. Like I said IF those designer drug allegations are true than that should definitely be held against the younger generation in this argument

Jordan's record stands today in the playoffs. Because when you get to the playoffs, nobody's trying to stat pad and break records. Everybody's trying to win the championship. I just wish they played that good during the season I wish they would change the rules so defense wasn't so hampered so we could have different players in today's game. Today's game is definitely great, but it's just not my game.

Great work, regarding talent of an era at minute 25, I see your point but have you considered that the many rule changes that didn't happen to rhe same extend in Europe are part of Team USA's struggles ?
Team USA seemed absolutely lost when Europe crowded the zone with no defensive 3 second rule.
They also didn't get as many flopping fouls or landing zone fouls as if they played undee NBA rules.
Doncic is on record saying scoring in the NBA is much easier than in Europe and living and coaching in Europe I can only agree.
But of course you are right about talent level, just the stats in the NBA are inflated due to scoring being easier, the talent level is ridiculously good...on dribbling (with barely any travel calls) and shooting (without handchecking and landing zone foul) we have the greatest talent ever. What we don't have is great midrange shooters and post players. Yeah we have Kawhi, Derozan and KD whonhave great midrange game and Jokic who has a good post game but that's about it. And 2 of them are champions in this era even though their playing style is more like the 90s players.

honestly, I think you people are crazy to say todays league is more talented... HOW?! DEFENSE DEFENSE D! we aren't even playing the same game....I use to say its impossible to compare eras in basketball, I have recently being watching FULL games from the 70 80s 90s....and today. You can absolutely compare eras EXCEPT for this one.... The game is NOT the same without defense and without defense you can NOT say these players are more talented. The contention and actual physical defense, let alone the mental state of the game and players back then toward defense is SOOOOOOOOOOO VAST from today, there is no fucking way anyone from back then couldn't play today and I can NOT say the reverse.

Even if JR Smith had a better mindset, he'd be a top 75 player. He could do everything Kobe, Vince, & TMac could do, but he clearly didn't have the mind to think the game out. I'd argue between Vince & JR as the best in game dunkers. I'd say JR's top 10 dunks rivals Vince Carter's top 10 dunks.

    • @FoulTarnished47

I actually think he would be a bit of an awkward fit in this era. He would've worked quite well as a C when he was younger and still had a good degree of athleticism, but I think the Dirk that won a title would really struggle with the pace and space of the modern game. I think he could still put up a lot of points, but I think it would be at the cost of being a bit of a black hole, and getting kinda cooked in the paint on the other end.
A player like KG would thrive much more in the modern game imo. He too would be forced to play C, but the switchability he would offer on D would be a nightmare for modern offences, and I believe he could've extended his lights out middy to at least having a decent corner 3 point shot.
