The Philips / Magnavox D2999 has a place among the classic portables. For those who have never used one, the D2999 is a very interesting unit -- it has huge audio performance, with a switchable top/front speaker and a huge telescopic whip. This is an interesting comparison. But the SW8 is simply in a different class. Do not expect decent SSB performance from the D2999 since it wasn't really made for it. And switching from automatic to manual gain improves SSB. It has basic NARROW/WIDE filtering. For those interested in getting a D2999, ask questions before buying, including whether the backlight bulbs on the meter and main display are working, because replacing the bulbs is a bit of a technical challenge. Occasionally, D2999s, whether under the Philips or Magnavox label, appear NIB and certain Ebay sellers try to get high prices for those. Just be careful.
Thanks Nick for the comparison of two Portatop receivers from the 80’s. I owned the Drake SW8 1st generation that had DSB sync only. I never have seen a Magnavox receiver or heard one either so nice to see one in action. Both sound good with the Drake easier for me to understand on your video. 73! Have a great day!
Hi, Newer Drake SW8 sounds more professional but I prefer the audio from the Magnavox D2999. I have a Philips D2999, it has a problem with the LCD display: a black spot which obscures a small part. 73
Had the Philips magnavox all right but too heavy with batteries like the Drake might look out for one got the Lowe hf 150 a few weeks ago battery and mains simple to use basic but excellent recivier thanks for the video
