Great video. I remembered that sink lock on sound….and trying to set the reference potentiometer to set the SSB frequency. I had mine just about where it sounded nice to my ears, when it was stolen.
If you try to set it the old manual recommends that you set it to the highest time station such either 15 MHZ WWV or 20/25 MHZ to use as your reference tone. It took me awhile to slooowly adjust but it worked.
Seeing this makes me appreciate my little Belka All-mode (2022) or DX model much more, if only it had speaker of either one….😂!
    73! Have a great day!

Also you are correct about the. Sync. Good for you. Most people dont know what. A good sync does. Rz.

I don't know if the sw8 has it but I do know that the 800 has a TCXO for its local oscillator so it's very stable but can and does drift for about 10 minutes when first switched on, then locks in at .000 on usb and lsb.

Great video! When a company buys another company it has the rights to the brand name. Unfortunately they can then put that brand name on anything they want and the radio may not have any resemblance to the original radios. I feel this is very unsatisfactory as the customer really hasn't a clue what's going on anymore. The same practice goes on with kitchen appliances.

Your right! My R8B is just so nice! BUT!!!!! As you know the power transformer is Always On even when off and the radio stays Hot all the time for stability! Personally do not like that feature but my R8B has been plugged in for 10 years and still is OK!! 😇😇

Nick, I own a Drake R8 I bought in 1991 and love it. Do you know where I can get the potentiometer for the RF gain pot. Given it's age, the RF gain pot is shot and needs replacement.

The only suggestion I have is to keep an eye on ebay

A BHI digital noise reduction unit would definitely make them sound a lot better! Almost as good at a FTDX101MP!! 😮😮

I would toss them both in the garbage if they could only perform like the 101

I don’t think it’s really important if they are or are not the same. I think Drake radios are great, but still overpriced in the used market. I have the Satellit 800, and while the sync detection is good, still an overrated feature. Even today, people overpay for the Drake name.

PS- you worry way too much about frequency display accuracy. An oscillator is going to go off slightly over 30 years if it has not been aligned, and refurbished. If you can do that stuff yourself, great. Otherwise, don’t obsess over it.
