Thank you for this amazing video.. This saves my ₹2000 around. I asked local vendor to do this upgrade and he came up with ₹4500 of cost estimation. I bought SSD 240gb from Amazon and it costs me of ₹2300. I didn't buy caddy. Now with 8gb ram and 240gb SSD my boot time is 5 seconds only.. Again thanks for such useful information to share.

I had to stretch my budget a bit but I ordered the Samsung one as you recommended. Thank you for explaining the BIOS setup! That helped me get to the final steps of finishing up with upgrades for my brother-in-law's Inspiron. Thanks so much!

Excellent video. I used this and upgraded my dell Inspiron 15 3567. Since my original sata was over 1TB I could not clone. Also I wanted to rebuild OS due to update issues.
1. What is the purpose of the black paper on internal hdd..if I remove it so will my hdd work normally? 2. The black paper is connected to internal hdd with some internal pins, so if I remove that black paper , I can't put it back on the hdd or some other SSD, right?...or can we also just stick the paper onto hdd or SSD?
1. What is the purpose of the black paper on internal hdd..if I remove it so will my hdd work normally? The black paper is some kind of insulation. I have the HDD in my optical drive and it is working fine without the insulation. 2. The black paper is connected to internal hdd with some internal pins, so if I remove that black paper , I can't put it back on the hdd or some other SSD, right?...or can we also just stick the paper onto hdd or SSD? The black film is not connected by pins, it is glued on to it. You can stick it on to another HDD but the sticking power would not be as good as the original.

Perfect!! All PROBLEMS solved in a SINGLE VIDEO!! Do I need to change some config at windows so the system understand now that its using and SSD?? Because I know that there's some differences in how the system sees/writes the files on an SSD and on an HDD.
An SSD does not require any specal chanegs for it to work. To increase the life, you can stop defragmenting the drive. Defragmentation helps a HDD, but is of no use on a SSD and will reduce life. Other than that no special changes required.
Great video 💯 one doubt, is dell Inspiron 3542 support 500GB SSD? I already have installed 240 GB SSD +1TB HDD but I want to upgrade to 500GB SSD+1TB HDD
Plz answer the following pointwise: 1. You went in for boot change so that system picks up OS and apps from SSd and not from hdd, to do this we can just straightaway format the hdd after cloning and now store only data( e drive in your case) into it, so now system will automatically pick up OS from SSd only...right? 2. In the boot option, how did you know efi file is in partition 2 only..?..do we have to search all the partitions..? 3. Inside efi file, you went to bootx64 and told that it is for SSD, how do you know that bootx64 is for SSD and not hdd..?...can we conclude that bootx64 is for SSD?

Plz answer the following pointwise: 1. Can we say that SSD caddy is same as hdd caddy and in SSD/hdd caddy we can put either SSD or HDD? But the CDROM caddy is different...right 2. The caddys are available in only 2 sizes 9.5 mm and 12.7mm...and a 2.5" SSD/hdd will fit into both...but a m.2 SSd won't fit into caddy so m.2 can only be placed in slot for internal storage if it is there....right? 2.for SSD, as you told that different versions 2.5" sata, M.2 sata and M.2 NVme exists but for HDD only 2.5". 1. Can we say that SSD caddy is same as hdd caddy and in SSD/hdd caddy we can put either SSD or HDD? But the CDROM caddy is different...right The SSD and HDD have the exact same dimensions. The caddy can accomodate either the SSD or HDD. For the DVDROM, there is no separate caddy as such. 2. HDD and SSD come in 2.5 inch width. 9.5mm and 12.7mm are the thickness of the caddy. For the 3542, it is a 9.5mm caddy that will be required. M.2 has a different slot and will not fit into the 2.5inch slot that is there on the 3542. 3.for SSD, as you told that different versions 2.5" sata, M.2 sata and M.2 NVme exists but for HDD only 2.5". Great Work Brother, it really helped me. However, i want to know after booting from SSD can i format C drive from HDD and use it in general, if yes the how can i do this ? Also i am noticing one thing that now fan is running more is that because HDD is in place of cd drive space increasing the temp of laptop more frequently ? One more request if possible can you create a tutorial for replacing keyboard for the same laptop model you used with keyboard having back-light Thank you!
Glad it helped! Yes, you can format the HDD and use it as required. Disk manager would have an option to format. But make sure you don't need anything on the disk. The fan running more won't be because of the HDD. The fan is used to cool the CPU. It could be because you are running something which is CPU intensive. I use a connected keyboard and not the one on the laptop. SO I don't think I'll be upgrading the keyboard on the laptop any time soon. :)
If I install a fresh OS on my SSD can I still be able to activate my genuine windows on that?? Btw thanks for this amazing explanation. I have successfully installed SSD because of your tutorial:)

Plz reply to the following pointwise: 1. To transfer data etc from drives we can just copy and paste from hdd to SSD or vice versa, but for apps and OS, even if we copy paste the apps folder into SSD, apps won't work as there are some inbuilt files also with apps and so we have to clone only for them to work properly...right? 2. Using this software, will my desktop remain as it is..if yes...then I can use this software to perform full image scan for e.g. if I take a new laptop and I want to transfer all my data, apps and OS to it , one way is to simply remove the HDD and SDD from existing laptop and use them in my new laptop, in this case full image reflection will be done in my new laptop...other way is that if I want to use both the laptops , so I use external hdd to transfer data...so now I clone the Hdd( which contains data) as well as SDD( which contains OS and apps) onto my external hdd using this software..and then plugin that external hdd to my new laptop and then clone the external hdd onto my new hdd and SSD in my new laptop...can I do this right? 3. Can we say using clone software in previous point to transfer data from one device to another is better than using system restore option of windows since in system restore sometimes multiple files of music , documents etc are created and also for full image restore we have to click additional options etc and then in new laptop we have to go to bios and select data recovery point from external hdd..and this method of using software is bit more easier...right?

Thank you very much sir. I am 70 yrs and did upgrading myself a year back with your help. But now my ssd is full and i am not able to direct my all new apps or work to hdd. Pl help
you are my savior.. I have the exact same laptop 3542 and was thinking to upgrade it. Just that I want to keep SDD in place of Optical Drive and leave HDD in its original place. Wanted to know does it make any difference ?
The optical drive would be slower than the HDD slot. You will not be able to use the SSD at the best speed. Other than that there would be no problem as such.
Hey, nice video but have some suggestions for future use. I replaced hardware as it is shown in vid but I could not boot Windows. I had warning 'This Product is covered by one or more of the following patents: US6,570,884, US6,115,776 and US6,327,625'. I have changed every single boot combination in Bios and couldn't boot with this hardware setting. Then, I solved the problem when I put SSD in ROM slot and HDD returned in regular slot, cloned HDD to SSD as it is shown and then switched the places of Disks (HDD in ROM slot and SSD in regular slot). I erased CD ROM in Device Manager as well. Hope this will solve the problem to someone. Greetings
@@TheMuser Nope.. Checked connection many times(connect and disconnect).. I had trouble finding that bootx64.efi as well. Probably due to cloning those files weren't copied properly. At the end I had to install windows again from the Usb.
Hi bro, thanks a lot for the video, it really helped me. I just have a question, I cloned my old hdd to a new ssd, so I put the ssd on my laptop instead of the hdd. I didn't format the hdd, and I saw in your video that you put the new ssd on gve caddy, so I would like your advice. Both of them have the operative system and it's files, but I want to know which one would be the best option to use on the caddy. Thank you bro! All the best
Hi Ivan, I am glad that the video helped. I actually put the SSD in the laptop and the HDD in the caddy (in place of the optical drive). It is always recommended to put the SSD in the laptop in place of the HDD. This is because the internal slot will be the faster option. The optical drive slot will be slower and will not let you use the full speed of the SSD. Do ensure you change the BIOS options to point to the SSD, otherwise the laptop will use the slower HDD to boot.
Hey Muser... Thanks a lot for the tutorial... You saved the day... I just have one question will putting old hdd in optical drive will have any effect on its life?because someone told me that hdd life will be reduced if used in optical drive connection via caddy.
Thank you for that helpful information . I put SSD 512 GB instead the HDD. And I bought a caddy and use it for the HDD and I did format for my laptop. . My laptop didn’t work until I changed the way of “how the boot read”(in boot F12) to UEFI, is what I did right? or I missed something? . Because I didn’t do the last step in your tutorial. I hope you understand my issue to help me.
The last part is important. You will have to use UEFi and also do the FILE BROWSER ADD BOOT OPTION to create and point the first entry to the SSD. Most probably, it is still pointing to the HDD and might not look at the SSD for booting.
i'm using dell inspiron 14 3000 (3442). Right now i'm upgrading it to ssd. However, I want to use my hdd as 2nd drive by putting in into the caddy. When i put the hdd caddy in the optical drive cd slot, the bios and device manager wont recognize it. Can you help me ?
Press it firmly so that it fits in place. If it still does not work, check if there are any buttons or sliders on the caddy. Switch it and try. Does the SSD work correctly?
Hello, thank you very much for this detailed video. I followed all the steps and successfully installed & configured my SSD. However my HDD is not showing in the file explorer. It only shows C drive which is the SSD. Can you please help?
It looks like your old HDD has sectors with errors. You can try fixing the sectors with errors, but most probably the error is permanent. (The HDD works without a problem most probably because bad sectors are marked and ignored. While cloning though the cloning tool cannot ignore it and that's why the cloning does not complete) It would be a better idea to go for a clean install
You have to go to the BOOT tab Under BOOT tab, click on FILE BROWSER ADD BOOT OPTION You can now choose the partition with the boot parition on it To figure out which parititon has the boot partition you can follow this video ruclips.net/video/55C0d_gjxKU/видео.html
I should have added that in the video but missed it. Here's a video that tells how to identify the EFI parition! ruclips.net/video/55C0d_gjxKU/видео.html
Can you please suggest best yet with affordable 250gb SSD for my Dell Inspiron 15 3542 and if i want to reinstall the windows in SSD and do the bios step will it be the same ? Or do I have to do anything else
The Crucial BX500 is a good option. I have been suing it since I made this video and it's been working perfectly well. amzn.to/2YTCklj Reinstalling Windows will be exactly the same. Do ensure you have your product key linked to your Microsoft account for activation if required.

I have an HDD with two OS's in place, Windows and Linux. There's a GRUB bootloader to choose whether to boot up from Linux or Windows. Basically, a dual boot-up system. How can I clone this entire HDD to a new SSD (with the two OS's )? The software you used only clones Windows. Thanks.
To be very frank, I am not very sure how Macrium would treat 2 OS partitions. My guess is it would still show up the 2 partitions and give you an option to copy both. However, as I said, not too sure about the same!
I have the same model and looking to upgrade. This video is really helpful. Right now I can't see my Optical drive neither in BIOS nor in Device Manager. I am using Windows 10 Home edition x64 bit. Do i also need to upgrade my RAM and if yes which one?
Are you saying without doing anything, you still cannot see the optical drive? It would show up under DVD/CD-ROM drives. If you haven't done anything yet then that means there is something wrong with the drive itself. Try removing it and plugging it again. If you have already put the SSD in the optical drive and then can't see the optical drive, then it is most probably because you have not intiailized the sSSD. Check out from 9:36 of the video.
@@TheMuser thanks for your reply, really appreciate. I was using windows 7 earlier and optical drive was working fine but when i upgraded to windows 10 home edition, since then i noticed that optical drive isn't working, tried looking at device manager, bios but had no luck. Sounds like a driver issue. This might help. support.microsoft.com/en-in/help/314060/your-cd-or-dvd-drive-is-not-recognized-by-windows-or-other-programs But definitely get this sorted before you do the swap!
My hdd is damaged. I don't want to buy another hdd(I want to use only one ssd and no hdd in optical drive). Can I put ONLY one ssd in my laptop?I have decided to buy only one 480 gb SSD , and use it for operating system as well as to store data. Is it possible? Will it work with one ssd? Or should I buy one ssd + one hdd??
Just a SSD will also work fine. But if the SSD gets full then the performance will decrease. It is recommended that SSD should not be more than 80% full. So if your total data is less than 400GB a single 40GB SSD should be fine.
Yes you can. And in fact I have replaced mine with a dual band wifi card. In the video at 7:53, you can see the wifi card's position as well The dual band card lets you connect to the faster 5GHz band but your router needs to have dual band first. The one I got was from AliExpress and was for INR1700 (s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_DlQA9LN) Model Number 7260HMW However since AliExpress does not deliver to India any more you can look for something similar on Amazon One link is provided here. however I have no idea how this product will be. amzn.to/3ViUI39
As a brand, both are more or less the same. But within both, you'll find categories. For example the Crucial MX500 is better than the BX500. And the WD Green is a little better than the normal ones. But overall, not much difference between the brands. I personally went for the cheaper one!
You'll hvae to enable UEFi. And before that you'll have to check if UEFI is available at all Check this video or you can Google it up ruclips.net/video/m2qWgCtA65w/видео.html
I am able to execute all the steps but got stuck in the last bios step.. Should all the options be like yours maybe the version of my bios is new?.Can you help here?
The BIOS settings screen can be different across various manufacturers and models. The names and settings might be different as well. Lastly, UEFI would need to be enabled.
i have inspiron 15 3000 series 3542 laptop i3 4th generation . do my laptop support ssd ? i have talked with dell support they said on your device you can upgrade only hdd. your lap not support ssd . am confusing please guide me
I replaced same SSD to primary drive and HDD to caddy. Iam now facing the bootup problem, i.e, no boot device found. Since both drives are detected in bios window but unable to bootup.. plz tell me the solution 🙏
First setup the BIOS properly. Ensure it is pointing to the SSD. Refer to 14:38 for instructions on setting BIOS. Try with just the SSD and see if it is booting. If it is not then the BIOS is not setup properly. Next try with just the HDD and see if it is booting.
Sir, I have put ssd in the main slot and hdd in the caddy and after this installation i turned on my laptop and its shows "insert a bootable media" and "Exiting PXE ROM"
I guess you have not fixed the SSD correctly. Push it in firmly and ensure it clicks in place. Also, in the boot menu, ensure Boot mode is set to UEFI.

Is it worth it in 2022? I have the same laptop with i5 processor and it is so slow. I am thinking of upgrading it but don't know if it will really be worth. I am from Nepal and the cost for this upgradation will be like Nepali Rs.11-12 thousands. Or should I buy a new laptop?
I was in the same situation as you are. I was thinking of buying a new laptop. Looking at the prices of new laptops, I thought I'll give this a try first. In the worst case, if it did not improve, I thought I would still have an SSD that I can use on the new laptop later :) I use this laptop mostly for data work and some video editing. And for me the difference in performance was significant and I haven't thought of replacing it after adding the SSD. So I would suggest give this a try. Most probably you'll be fine with adding as SSD. However what you use your laptop for will also be important. If you expect heavy usage of image and video editing applications applications, then maybe you qould be better off getting a new laptop with better RAM.
Yes You can just ensure you are cloining the correct partitions and pointing it correctly in your BIOS settings. However, I haven't used multiple OS on my machine yet.
Thanks!! But in the end what we have to do about previous local disk drive(HDD) on which windows was installed. Can i delete it and yes then how, will it cause any problem?
The HDD can be formatted to be used as an extra drive. Do ensure the boot option is set to SSD and check that the laptop is booting off the SSD. You can also try without connecting the HDD and see if the laptop is working. Once you have confirmed that everything is fine, you can go ahead and format the HDD.
Hello Muser, thanks for the tutorial, very well explained. Unfortunately, I missed one step, to put new ssd in hd bay and old hdd in caddy. So I had ssd in caddy and I continued the data copy and now laptop doesn't boot properly. Getting mbr error 3. And post windows boot, the screen is blank. Any help you can provide?
Hey Mandar No need to worry. For now, just remove the SSD, put the HDD back in the HDD bay and try. It should start up without issue. Do let me know if that works.

As you can see in the video I had exactly the same laptop and exactly the same problem. My laptop was painfully slow and the SSD solved all my problems. PowerBI, Tableau, R and everything else is much faster now!
How much SSD can I place ?..I have Dell inspiron 3542 i7 4th gen ( as far as I know model number matters for space and processor no and generation decides the RAM, correct me here if I am wrong)....so I have 1 TB hdd installed on my laptop...now I am thinking that I place 1 TB SSD in internal hdd slot and my 1 TB hdd in optical drive...will the system support total of 2 GB storage..?..how much max storage can Dell Inspiron 3542 support?
I cannot say this for sure but I have read that SSDs upto 2Tb are supported. You will have to check with the Dell website or customer service to confirm the maximum size. The 1TB HDD will work fine in the optical drive. I am using one right now.
Bro, I also have inspiron 3542. What Ssd will be compatible with my laptop ? My laptop had 2.5inch 1 Tb SATA Hdd Is Crucial BX500 2.5 compatible with it ?

I have answered all your questions since you took so much time to put them down systematically.

Best video on how to upgrade ssd

The system will not automatically pick it from the SSD. You will have to update the BIOS settings for it to pick it from the SSD.

The name of the drive will tell you whether it is SSD or HDD (CT240BX300SSD1 for SSD). There would be a EFI folder in both the HDD and SSD.

2. The caddys are available in only 2 sizes 9.5 mm and 12.7mm...and a 2.5" SSD/hdd will fit into both...but a m.2 SSd won't fit into caddy so m.2 can only be placed in slot for internal storage if it is there....right?

1. Can we say that SSD caddy is same as hdd caddy and in SSD/hdd caddy we can put either SSD or HDD? But the CDROM caddy is different...right
The SSD and HDD have the exact same dimensions.
The caddy can accomodate either the SSD or HDD. For the DVDROM, there is no separate caddy as such.
2. The caddys are available in only 2 sizes 9.5 mm and 12.7mm...and a 2.5" SSD/hdd will fit into both...but a m.2 SSd won't fit into caddy so m.2 can only be placed in slot for internal storage if it is there....right?
2.5 inch is the width.
Sata exists...right?
There are different HDD formats as well. However the 2.5 inch SATA is the most common.
One more request if possible can you create a tutorial for replacing keyboard for the same laptop model you used with keyboard having back-light
Thank you!

The OS and apps can be cloned to the external HDD first.
The rest of your files you can copy directly to the external HDD after the cloning is done.

That would be a personal choice.

you are my savior..
@@TheMuser Oh okay, thank you.
Greetings
Glad you could work it out and thanks for sharing. I am sure this will be helpful for someone out there!
From the online articles I read, most probably this was due to a loose connection.
@@TheMuser Nope.. Checked connection many times(connect and disconnect).. I had trouble finding that bootx64.efi as well. Probably due to cloning those files weren't copied properly. At the end I had to install windows again from the Usb.
Can you make a video on upgrading wireless with wifi 6 (802.11ax) using M.2 to mPCIE adaptor, in this same DELL model?
@@TheMuser Thanks bro! Appreciate your answer
Hey Muser... Thanks a lot for the tutorial... You saved the day... I just have one question will putting old hdd in optical drive will have any effect on its life?because someone told me that hdd life will be reduced if used in optical drive connection via caddy.
Thank you for that helpful information

I put SSD 512 GB instead the HDD.
And I bought a caddy and use it for the HDD and I did format for my laptop.

My laptop didn’t work until I changed the way of “how the boot read”(in boot F12) to UEFI, is what I did right? or I missed something?

Because I didn’t do the last step in your tutorial.
I hope you understand my issue to help me.
The last part is important. You will have to use UEFi and also do the FILE BROWSER ADD BOOT OPTION to create and point the first entry to the SSD.
Most probably, it is still pointing to the HDD and might not look at the SSD for booting.

Does the SSD work correctly?
Hello, thank you very much for this detailed video. I followed all the steps and successfully installed & configured my SSD. However my HDD is not showing in the file explorer. It only shows C drive which is the SSD. Can you please help?
Most probably it is a loose contact. Ensure it is properly plugged in.
Hi I am getting byte/sector error cannot clone source disk to destination disk you got this error while cloning I have same laptop Dell Inspiron 3542
It looks like your old HDD has sectors with errors. You can try fixing the sectors with errors, but most probably the error is permanent. (The HDD works without a problem most probably because bad sectors are marked and ignored. While cloning though the cloning tool cannot ignore it and that's why the cloning does not complete)
It would be a better idea to go for a clean install
I have a doubt in the last step.. How do you choose partition 2 in the ssd? Could u please tell sir?

I was in the same situation as you are. I was thinking of buying a new laptop. Looking at the prices of new laptops, I thought I'll give this a try first.
In the worst case, if it did not improve, I thought I would still have an SSD that I can use on the new laptop later :)
I use this laptop mostly for data work and some video editing.
I am using both linux and windows on two partitions. So can I transfer them both on ssd ?
Yes You can just ensure you are cloining the correct partitions and pointing it correctly in your BIOS settings.
However, I haven't used multiple OS on my machine yet.

This is great 😊 I have 3543 touch screen. Maybe in near future, I will try this.
I hadn't realised that optical drive can be replaced by hdd😅
I didn't know this till very recently either! 😂
Hi thanks for the video!! What about the dimension of hdd, how to make sure if the ssd will fit in my laptop or not?
The dimensions are standard dimensions.
The 2.5 inch HDD and SSD are exactly the same dimensions. It will fit!
@@TheMuser thank you!!
What if the BIOS is Legacy instead of UEFI.
My laptop didn't boot after the installation.
pls HELP
I would suggest going back to the original setup (HDD in the drive slot)
Turn the BIOS to UEFI and then try the same steps all over again.

Hey Mandar
No need to worry. For now, just remove the SSD, put the HDD back in the HDD bay and try. It should start up without issue.
Do let me know if that works.
hi i have the same laptop but the keyboard of the laptop has stop working idk if it has unconnected or not working can u tell help me out by making a video about it
pls reply will be really helpful
Haven't worked on the keyboard yet.
The easiest option would be to get a USB keyboard.
@@TheMuser yes im using one right now but i open the laptop and check if the keyboard is working.
But no,it isn't then the caplock button from my usb keyboard when i use it ,the laptop keyboard light up.
idk if it will work, will continue using the usb one

Tnx for this video
Most welcome! Glad it helped!
I do not have optical drive in Inspiron 15-5578
What should I do
An alternative can be an external case for the HDD.
You can put your HDD here and use the SSD inside the laptop.

Will it be compatible if I buy Western Digital WD Green 240 GB 6.35 cm (2.5 inch) SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (WDS240G2G0A) for Dell inpiron 3542?
I am guessing you are talking about this one
Yes, it would be perfectly compatible.

Dell authorised customer care is telling that my laptop dell Inspiron 3542 doesn't support SSD so what should I do?Also let me know after putting SSD will it handle apps like power bi smoothly which was hanging a lot in hdd because of old i3 4 th generation processor
Good one. Do you know the chipset motherboard of 3542 is compatible with i3 or i5 is compatible?
The chip is soldered to the motherboard and therefore you'll have to unsolder it to attach the new chip. No idea if the i5 is compatible though!
