On a previous video I made, I was teaching people how to clone... but I forgot completely about MBR and GPT so while it worked for most, some had bluescreens because of that and it took me a while to realize it, so since then I make sure to state it in all these cloning videos.

Great presentation! Have done numerous drive upgrades and came across this when looking for freeware programs to migrate same machine. Already GPT so tried this method and was happy with the amount of time to perform! Also liked the ability to migrate to smaller drive with enough space to contain partitions.
Well awesome my friend, so very happy you enjoyed it and I am happy I could help you discover this. Actually another friend to the channel pointed it out to me after seeing that Macrium went to the trial mode, so I wanted to try to help as much as possible and I tried it and it worked, so I wanted to bring it to you and I am so VERY happy I could. Thank you as well for your kind words and support, it means the world to me.
Thank you for the video. I followed each step as-is but when the computer restarts in the Windows PE mode i get an error saying "SystemMigrationInvalid command line parameter error". Do you know how to resolve this? I am doing a NVME M.2 to NVME M.2 migration.

Hey @ThisBytesForYou If our drive is already set to GPT do we just skip to the 6:30 mark or are we still required to go into the BIOS and check for UEFI settings? Thank you in advance!
As always, thanks for another great video. I bought the Sabrent cloner and a bigger SSD. Now I just need to do it. I'm thinking about making a clone in MBR first, "just in case". Then change the original to GPT, change to UEFI and verify it still boots. If all is good, do the clone again in GPT. (original SSD is 120gb, new SSD is 500gb)
I dont suggest leaving it in mbr, like I showed you, it worked fine, ive had many comments from people with MBR failing, but they haven't responded once I asked for more info and thanks so much for your kind words and support my friend, it means the world to me.
Great advise but I can’t get mine to clone results says it can’t clone due to logical sectors do not match destination drive…source disk 512…destination discs 4096….? Will the program disk genius adjust the sectors to match …..
Great presentation. My only issue is I don't want to spend $80 for the dial cloning station to use 1x. Is there any other way to plug in the target drive for the clone besides that cloning station?
Thanks bud, glad you enjoyed it. As for the $80, this was just an example, if you are using a desktop, you can just install another drive, the new blank drive, to another SATA port and another SATA power connection and then clone it. On a laptop, you are a little restricted, some laptops have additional bays you can use, but very few. What are you working with and if anything, what is your budget?
It's an HP laptop, budget isn't the issue as much as value. A single use 80$ is more than the SSD drive itself. So I guess the whole process has to be evaluated to see if the cost is worth faster boot times. No matter what comes of that eval your videos are seriously the best I've seen on RUclips. Thank you for taking the time
You don't have to use that one, it's just what I had on hand, maybe this one off of my Global Amazon Affiliate link would be better for you, but I warn you, I have not tested it myself, so I cannot vouch for it, I can vouch for the one in the video: geni.us/HTLu2 And thank you so much for your kind words and support my friend, it does mean the world to me. THis seems so much more complex than the Samsung SSD 860 EVO 1TB 2.5 Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-76E1T0B/AM) and Samsung migration software. I've an old Dell laptop Goodwill Refurbished running WIn 10 Pro. Do I (really) need to mess with the GPT etc?

Did this migrate the OS or clone it? I think you chose to migrate which isn't cloning, was the OS on both hard drives? It says migrating to during the process too. Basically Migration does not keep Windows on the original drive, its migrates it not cloning it. If something goes wrong during migration you could potentially have issues on the original hard disk.
@@ThisBytesForYou its says you need to make the destination drive bootable, I dont know if just converting it to GPT in Windows disk manager would solve this. I have only migrated but want to learn to properly clone with disk genius when I have a non essential drive with an OS to experiment on. Might have to do something in the BIOS with the drive beforehand after converting to GPT. If I figure it out and remember you I'll be back sir!🤔
Hi, I'm new here, I have a question, I'm going to upgrade my whole PC, including a new SSD, but I want to keep my HDD from my current PC. I'm going to do a fresh Windows 10 install on my new SSD. What would happen to all my programs/apps that are stored on my old HDD?, because I have read that they may not work but not sure if that's true. I will unninstall some graphics card drivers and print drivers from the HDD before putting the SSD.
hey bud, you are in good hands, we were all noobs at one point, we had to start some where and I haven't forgot that (I don't use noob negatively), we are a very friendly channel. With Windows, where you install the program isn't just the folder, there are hundreds of registry entries, ini entries that point to where the data is, and scattered files written through out the drive, so there is no clean way to do that. I would recommend a clean install of windows, and all the programs and such and PLEASE make sure the SSD is your boot drive, I recommend to not have any other drive installed when you install windows. Also, if this is new hardware, I highly recommend you use windows 11, its awesome. I have videos here on how to do it all, if you need them, please let me know.
The clone option is not working for me, I keep getting a write disk error when trying to copy everything over to the SSD on Disk Genius. My system is already on GPT, but I noticed when I plug in the SSD via USB, the partition reads as MBR for the new drive. Am I doing something wrong or did I buy the wrong SSD? 😅
@@ThisBytesForYou thank you for replying! I believe it is. I went through the steps at the beginning and when I selected advanced startup and UEFI Firmware settings, it shows a UEFI Boot order. So I never made changes to that.
@@ThisBytesForYou the original HDD is GPT, but when I went onto Disk Genius and plugged in the SSD with a USB cable before cloning, it said the partition style was MBR for the SSD. And when I go through your steps to clone the disk, it starts copying the data but a few seconds in it shows me the write disk error message. And another text box comes up at the bottom saying the target disk will have errors.
If you see, I clone through USB, but are you cloning a partition or the entire drive? Also, if the main drive has errors, it will not copy, you don't want to copy a drive with errors, the clone will make your system run horrible. What version of windows are you using?
I just used this program to clone my 256mb SSD to a 2TB SSD yesterday. I meticulously followed every step in this video (I knew my PC already used GPT but I still double checked every step). The new drive would not boot when installed via SATA or USB (when I checked that option). I must have erased and restarted the process five times. Then, all of a sudden, it worked. I have no idea why. I didn't do anything different. I plugged in the drive and my PC booted. Everything seems to be working fine now, but just be warned.

I couldent reply to your message there. And yes i am replacing the dvd drive to a caddy which holds the ssd and goes in the dvd alot. After coverting from the hard disk thats already in there to ssd. And set boot to ssd. Is it best to swap them around for fast boot loads
Hey. Great video. I have a question. I want to clone my PC desktop. I recently installed a Sansung 980 PRO 2TB in this PC. Original plan was extra storage. Now I want to clone my windows disk. The old installed SSD is an Intel 750 1TB. Can this be done without removing my newly installed SSD 980?
Glad you enjoyed it, have you thought to try what I show you in this very video but instead of using the cloner, just have both drives in the machine and cloning like I show you?
yeah thats because you got it from another machine, probably an OEM machine, but thats OK, this video will help you: ruclips.net/video/43dMdbHthPc/видео.html
Hard disk is from the same hp laptop where I have installed my new ssd. I have just seen the video you had shared. Do I need to copy recovery partition to usb and delete? Recovery partition is showing 279mb free of 20gb
@AbdulRahman-pk4bo recovery partition is from another computer that you probably will never use, it's garbage in this computer, I would delete it and expand the primary partition.
hi great vidoe 1 question can i do the opposite? override a working system with old drive? i mean to over run the local drive from an external drive thanks
ih i want to do the opposite to clone from another extrenal driver onto the inner drive to over run it the opposite not from local boot partition with windows runing by extrnal into the pc that run windows overrun it @@ThisBytesForYou

My laptop has 2 hard drives. One SSD being used for C drive (OS and softwares are installed here) and one HDD used for D drive which only contains personal files. My HDD is failing and I'm attempting to replace it. Do I need to do any extra steps like cloning or any set up after I put the new drive in? I look everywhere but no one is answering this issue. The only instructions are for when the drive with OS is replaced. No source talks about what should be done when the drive without OS is replaced
Your drive is failing, I don't recommend cloning it, I recommend doing a clean install of windows, and once it's installed transfer all your files. You will need to reinstall all the programs and drivers. If you give me the manufacturer and model number, exact model number I can help you find the drivers. @@ThisBytesForYou thank you for your reply. However, what I mean to ask is, the drive I'm replacing is the data drive, not the boot drive with window(my laptop has 2 drives). Do I need to do any extra steps in that case?

@@ThisBytesForYou I did yes.....only reason I ask, is because I saw another video of someone using the same software and they chose System Migration, just need to know if System Migration and Clone Disc are pretty much the same function.
I went through a complete clone here, and it worked fine, Cloning means creating an exact copy of the existing system, and migration generally transfers data or information from one system to another. They are different in the fact that if you are moving to a different motherboard and processor (HAL) from AMD to Intel or visa versa, you want to select Migration, if you are staying on the same system, do a clone.
@@ThisBytesForYou I am staying on the same system, just need to upgrade to a SSD....so I'll do a clone.....many thanks for your help, really appreciate it. 👍

Greetings Sir, i have correctly create the media for windows10 using rufus to make bootable usb flashdrive. i successfully make a fresh installed windows10 on the 2nd hand laptop. the problem is, im new on asus strix z390-e gaming mobo bios, yesterday when pc first powered on, it's suggest to press f1 to continue into bios mode. then after i load optimized default config at the exit option, i think there's a easy feature "launch efi shell from usb drive" to boot my usb drive to install windows10. after i click that (launch efi), i get blank screen overtime. until now.. i have tried take out the cmos battery, but no luck. i put the hdmi on the mobo, no gpu installed. only i-gpu from i7 8086K
If you used Rufus, you did not use the correct method, use the method I show you in the video many people use Rufus and they think they did it right when they use my method it fixes it. You are using the ufi boot, don't use that, use how I show you, chose it as a boot option, stop complicating things. I give you all the tools, if you are using Rufus you are not using the tools I provide. Use different tools, expect different results.
@@ThisBytesForYou pardon sir, the problem is not on installing the windows via rufus or any tools. the problem occur, that i wrongly click the 'launch efi on usb drive" option in bios at exit. then my screen went blank
Go here dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/LGA1151/ROG_STRIX_Z390-E_GAMING/E14841_ROG_STRIX_Z390-E_GAMING_UM_V2_WEB.pdf?model=ROG%20STRIX%20Z390-E%20GAMING and on the top of page 1-10 they show you how to clear CMOS. Pulling the cmos battery with cables plugged in won't clear anything, this way will. On the rear panel of your motherboard, where you plug in USB and Ethernet there should also be a clear CMOS button. Give that one a try as well. That one will need to have the system plugged in.
@@ThisBytesForYou there's no cables plug in at all, (hdmi, power cable, lan, etc) free from electricity, take out the cmos battery half day, and clear cmos with jumper the 2pins (clear-c)
@@ThisBytesForYou i think the 2nd hand i buy online, is faulty.. i take the pc to 5 service centre, they show me with different mobo, click the "launch efi on usb drive, nothing happen" it will automaticaly goes into bios setup again.
I think the drive measurements in drive thickness you meant to give are 7.5 mm and 9mm...; certainly not 1.8 or 2.5 mm, as 2.5mm is only 1/10th of an inch!
Which part of the video are you talking about, different drive sizes... Yes 2.5 mm won't fit in a slot meant for 1.8mm, those are different thicknesses for SSDs. Yes 1/10thr of and inches is correct, we are talking thickness to fit in a very tight spot, 1 inch is too thick. Thick, not talking length or width of the drive
I have to apologize, you caught me as I was waking up for work, I'm a Diva when I wake up, I should learn not to answer as I am getting up early, sorry about that bud you are right, 100%, did I say that in the video?
There are many different methods, are you using a laptop, if so what is the manufacturer and model number or are you using a desktop, if so what is the manufacturer and model number, or is it a custom built pc, if so what is the manufacturer and model number of the motherboard.
An example of going from one drive to another drive, maybe the 500Gig was faster, maybe the 1TB drive was dying, it could have been any drive, the example was just showing you how it worked. My specific example for you was enabling UEFI in your BIOS.
Doesn't exist. Bios does not have Boot List Option Legacy. (That is Sony Laptops for you) Looks like I will havew to convert this SSD to MBR. However, I should mention that it does show the RAM and SSD size. I think I will need to bring this SSD back to MBR. How do I do that?
just delete the partition with the Windows installer, like i show you in the Windows 10 install video and when you install it will be mbr. Notice how I show you in the video.
for 200, that means they will use software to recover it, not like real data recovery places, I've had it done before, they also give you a new drive to replace your old drive, well I guess not give you, since you pay so much, but drives with damage, scratched disks, broken disks, dead motors, etc, cant be recovered with software.
Have you tried taking it out of the laptop and putting both disks in a desktop sata port? Then, I think, you should be able to migrate without being booted on the laptops disk from the desktops OS.

Hey @ThisBytesForYou
If our drive is already set to GPT do we just skip to the 6:30 mark or are we still required to go into the BIOS and check for UEFI settings? Thank you in advance!
I recommend watching it all to get the full understanding, since it's gpt you can skip only the part about changing from MBR to gpr
@@ThisBytesForYou Appreciate the reply and Thank you!
Always a pleasure my friend, let me know how it goes.
I have a question when you do migrate system will ur old drive is still work like normal or no?
No
As always, thanks for another great video.
@@ThisBytesForYou Ok, with that, I'll give it a go! Thanks!

Great advise but I can’t get mine to clone results says it can’t clone due to logical sectors do not match destination drive…source disk 512…destination discs 4096….? Will the program disk genius adjust the sectors to match …..
Did you do it just like I showed you?
I have the Dell Inspiron 5000 series, can I upgrade to an SSD drive. Please suggest. Thanks
ummm, maybe, what is the service tag number on your dell, its usually on the top of the machine or the back.
THANK YOU, I was not sure what migration was, I thought it was the same, I couldn't figure out what the difference was, but it makes sense haha.
@@ThisBytesForYou its says you need to make the destination drive bootable, I dont know if just converting it to GPT in Windows disk manager would solve this.
Is your BIOS in UEFI mode?
@@ThisBytesForYou thank you for replying! I believe it is. I went through the steps at the beginning and when I selected advanced startup and UEFI Firmware settings, it shows a UEFI Boot order. So I never made changes to that.
OK cool, and no problem, I love to help. So is the original drive, where you are cloning from MBR?
Everything seems to be working fine now, but just be warned.
sadly that can happen, not sure why either, I have heard of it before but happy I could help with the rest.

They are different in the fact that if you are moving to a different motherboard and processor (HAL) from AMD to Intel or visa versa, you want to select Migration, if you are staying on the same system, do a clone.

every BIOS is different, but it should somewhat be similar.
So, it looks like you went from a 1TB to a 500GB drive. . Why is that again?
An example of going from one drive to another drive, maybe the 500Gig was faster, maybe the 1TB drive was dying, it could have been any drive, the example was just showing you how it worked. My specific example for you was enabling UEFI in your BIOS.
Yes. So far it all looks good. I have to check the Sony BIOS.
When you enable UEFI you can use GPT

However, I should mention that it does show the RAM and SSD size.

just delete the partition with the Windows installer, like i show you in the Windows 10 install video and when you install it will be mbr. Notice how I show you in the video.
My boot drive (m.2 nvme) is GPT and my data drive is MBR. Is that okay?
it is, but its best to move everything over to GPT, DiskGenius does that too.
How do you clone when the old HDD is already dead and laptop no longer boots up.
If it's dead you cannot, although you can send your drive to get the data recovered but it can cost a few thousand dollars.
@@ThisBytesForYou a computer store here will do it for 200, i guess i should go back to him.
for 200, that means they will use software to recover it, not like real data recovery places, I've had it done before, they also give you a new drive to replace your old drive, well I guess not give you, since you pay so much, but drives with damage, scratched disks, broken disks, dead motors, etc, cant be recovered with software.
Have you tried taking it out of the laptop and putting both disks in a desktop sata port? Then, I think, you should be able to migrate without being booted on the laptops disk from the desktops OS.
his case might be different, since he is cloning from a dead drive, but it won't be bad to try it
