I had to replace a dead fan in my HP laptop, so used the opportunity to install a 1TB SSD, upgrade to a faster processor, install more RAM, and add bluetooth. Used Acronis True Image instead of his MiniTool Partition Wizard. Everything went smoothly, mainly because I was very careful in selecting the correct processor and bluetooth board. RAM did nothing, so went back to original 8g.

I want to thank you for your clear and concise instructions in how to do this. I followed your tutorial step by step and replaced the hard drive on my Dell Latitude D630 laptop to an SSD (which cost $35 at Amazon for a 250 gig drive!) It boots up quicker and works like a champ. Much faster at loading web pages and starting up programs. Thanks again! ~from a fan in Pennsylvania, on the east coast of the United States

I hate the geeks and gamer kids that have mastered the computer languages and try to give directions while assuming that everyone can understand what they are trying to tell us.
I constantly see people who attempt to tell me to do this and that but don't bother telling me how.
Even worse is how some use a ton of acronyms that are meaningless to most people.

Thanks a lot. This is exactly what I was looking for. Demoted my laptop just for traveling. So I didn't need a big SSD anymore. Transferred what I wanted to a smaller older SSD which I didn't use anymore (including the settings and the OS) and it worked like a charm. I have been trying other programs for cloning before but they would only allow you same size or bigger ones as the destination drive. Which makes sense in most cases but not in mine. Sometimes you want to use your old stuff because it's still good enough for the things you need it for.

One difference I ran into was that my SSD was new from the manufacturer and came un-formatted. The PC wouldn't even recognize that there was a device attached via USB which gave me pause. I proceeded with the the manufacturer-provided disc-cloning software (rather than the one mentioned in this video) and it recognized the new SSD and formatted it before proceeding. Everything went smoothly from there. These directions are very helpful for those not quite sure of the process. My laptop is now unbelievably faster. Anyone struggling with a slow PC should really consider this upgrade.

Back in November 2016 just before the SSD drives started to jump in price I ordered two Samsung 850 500GB EVO SSD drives. I installed one in my 2009 laptop and one in my 2009 desktop, the speed of the SSDs is nothing short of amazing. I cloned over my old laptop 320GB drive to the new SSD, it took close to 8 hours to complete, but well worth the wait. It's amazing how fast the prices have shot up on the SSD drives within a couple months though. Guys don't be scared to add an SSD drive to your laptop, it's very easy to do. I've heard that you should never run a Disk Defragmenter program on an SSD because it'll ruin the drive, I'm not sure how true that is though. Great video as always Brian.

Disk defragmentation programs have SSD optimizing settings, just like Windows 10 optimizes an SSD in the background without you knowing it.

    • @ZenMinus
      @ZenMinus 5 лет назад +5

Defragment programs don't "ruin" the drive, they "use up" some of the write cycles. SSDs do have a limited number of write cycles. There is nothing to gain from defragmenting an SSD as the data is directly referenced, there is no latency like there is on a hard drive, there is no wait for the data to spin under the drive read/write head.

Hi, Tom. I just purchased a hp laptop and a Samsung 860 EVO SSD drive. When I connect the SSD drive to the laptop, the computer does sound two peeps. However, the drive does not show up in the file explorer. It is shown among the devices connected to the computer but disk manager indicates it is unallocated. Any suggestion?

Great tutorial. One question: the cloning software mentions possible need to change BIOS. Could you please tell me what needs changing in BIOS; is it the boot up order? Thanks

    • @errolmcinnes7938
      @errolmcinnes7938 6 лет назад +11

yes, the reference is to the boot order. Using Partition magic, you always want to use USB boot first. at the start the usb drive is unbootable. At the point where you saw him get the error, the system reboots to the newly bootable usb drive to complete the clone. Failing to do so will result in the clone not completing.

errol mcinnes Could there be an issue if the laptop is configured for duel-boot? I am thinking of changing my SSD for a larger one, but my laptop can boot with both Windows and Linux. Might this cause problems or should the partition wizard sort it all out?

Alex L, though you asked your question a while back, and probably resolved the issue, let me answer your question if a new user is curious. The answer to your question is that the video applies to dual boot drives too. I have a Win 7, and Win 10 dual boot arrangement which I copied from a sluggish hard drive to the SSD. It made my laptop useable again.

BOOTING UP TO LOGIN SCREEN NOW TAKES 20 SECONDS, INSTEAD OF 2 MINUTES
Word 365 loads in 6 seconds, instead of 30 seconds.
And so on - I followed these instructions and switched to a Crucial MX500 1TB, and it has significantly improved performance on my Lenovo z50. I am literally writing this during what used to be my "bootup and go have coffee for 10 minutes" period. Thanks for a very useful video.
I have one more useful IT Tip to add:
    1) If you use Partition Wizard to copy to SSD, all of your previously hidden partitions will be assigned a Drive letter. Eg. WINRE_DRV should be hidden, but it ended up visible in My Computer.
This is easily fixed by again running Partition Wizard, and changing the Drive Letter on those partitions to "none".

@@pranavnambiar1699 Hi Pranav. After transferring all of Hard Disk 0 to the new SSD, everything got transferred, including Drive C: (WIN10), Drive D: (my Data partition), and several smaller system partitions, such as WIN_RE. If you are having problems with Partition Wizard, you can try EaseUS ToDo Backup free version. I have several paid versions of this, which I use regularly for image backups:
      - install it on Windows 10
      - use it to save your entire hard drive to image (eg. onto USB hard drive)
      - create an Easeus bootable Emergency Disk (very simple, its one of the menu options)
      - remove Hard Disk and put in the new SSD
      - use the Emergency Disk to restore (and tick the box for Optimise for SSD).
I did this on a 2nd identical z50, and it worked also. A bit slower though - it took quite a few hours.

This was a bit fiddly, maybe partially because I was trying to replace an HDD that which I suspect had problems.
To get MiniTool Partition Tool to run, I had to:
    1. Scan my old disk, and repair. The MiniTool choked on my HDD the first few times, until I cleaned it up.
    2. Have to shut off EVERYTHING else that's running while MiniTool does the migration. That's not just closing apps that are obviously open. I had to use Windows Task Manager to kill a bunch of programs running in the background (e.g., McAfee security, various others). Otherwise the MiniTool would stop, and it did NOT proceed after a restart (as the pop-up indicated it would).
Since it took about 8 hours to run each time (before hanging), it took several days overall to get my HDD migrated. But eventually it worked, and my new drive runs fine, w/o loss of data.
Suggestion: If you have a way, you might want to backup all your data on the old drive to a network drive, and then delete it from your old drive. By minimizing the total size of data to be migrating, the MiniTool app runs a lot faster. Then you can restore your data from the network drive onto the new disk. For my system, it was faster to move data off the old HDD to Network Attached Storage, and then restore it later, rather than have MiniTool transfer all the data itself. And you get a backup of your data anyway, just in case something goes wrong.

After only 2 minutes in, the following needs mentioning:
    1. If your drive is Encrypted with bitlocker, you will need to unencrypt the drive first. That could take many hours.
    2. Before you copy the drive, if you are using a UEFI based computer, you need to go into disk management and choose the new drive partition format . MBR or GUID. Deciding which one is easy but I haven't the time right now to explain it. Perhaps later.
Or the option to choose a drive partition type will automatically popup, asking for a decision.

Not sure there will be many people watching this with an encrypted drive and if they have encrypted their drive, I would think they would know to unencrypt their drive first. But I also think with you sharing this knowledge will help others, so thanks.
