Back in 2011,I picked up a N90 for less than $100 dollars at a local camera store in Toronto.
Back then, they were trying to GIVE film cameras away and I couldn’t pass it up. I’m loving the N90.
informative. didnt know there were newish nikon film cameras till tonight. well explained. i'm still using my nikon F from the 60s with so few choices to be made. using "my light meter" app on the iphone ($3.50) which works as well as any meter i've ever used. greetings to all film people out there.
Prices have come up as people have wised up to what a deal they are but still fairly reasonable compared to F100. I just got a F90x this video was very helpful.
@@GonzoTheRosarian Glad to be of help. Thanks for watching.
Very nice detailed video. I own a N90 and I found out about some features that I was not aware of from your video. Thank you. 😊
Thank you for this video it's been very helpful I just got a n90s with the grip all I need is the film so I can shoot. Thanks again.
Very good evolution of the f801 which was a game changer and pushed people to go to Nikon autofocus line. Very efficient with it s grip, and the Nikon flashes which were overpriced at their time are now completely affordable. Great camera great review.
Thank you. I have always loved Nikon Film cameras.
Hi, excellent video, helps greatly my start with the camera - thanks!
What about the MF-26 data back - do you know if it understand years we are living in? Many databacks (like F4 MF-22) do not go above year 2019 so they are pretty much useless. I have bought a F90X (=N90S) with the MF-26 data back but have not received it, luckily the camera also comes with plain back in case there is or will be a problem with the data back.
I don’t know if the MF-26 will go past 2019. Thanks for watching my video and your comments. The N90 is an excellent camera.
Hello and thanks a lot for the video. I just got an F90X and it seems that the aperture coupling lever is broken. Is it worth it to take it to repair service?
@@VictorHPerez Probably not. You should be able to pick up a working body for much less than having it repaired. Thanks for watching.
I just stumbled upon your video. One of the most informative I have seen. Thank you for that. I have a question. With Some of my manual lenses I do get the F--- especially with my Nikon N 60. Can I still use those manual lenses with the camera and get good results? Thank you in advance.
Thank you for your comments. The reason your getting that F- - is that you have the camera set for shutter priority or program mode. Use aperture priority or manual exposure mode and it will work fine. With manual lenses the camera has no way of changing the aperture that’s why you must use aperture priority where you set the aperture on the lens or manual exposure mode where you set the aperture and shutter speed. I hope this helps.
Hey will you ever make a video about the mf-26 multifunction back that works with this camera?
@@NaikonDrk Probably not, I don’t have one.
Soooo, I carry 3 types, or more, of cameras with me. I carry Polariod. I carry a mechanical SLR, and I carry a digital camera. All full sized. I just picked up my first DSLR, and haven't used it outside. I don't like it much. Maybe I would like the nikon 90s better.
@@gordwrath6811 If you’re looking for an affordable auto focus film camera the N90S is a good choice. But prefer a digital camera by a wide margin. Thanks for watching and your comments.
@julesvuottosphotofocus4696 no problem. I love film. I love cameras. I love to take pictures of pretty things. I have many cameras, but I like the mix of old and new with the n90s. I gonna bet one this weekend, most likely.
I just bought f90. For 70 bucks.
Flash sync speed. 1/250th or slower!
Yes. Electronic flash will sync at any speed up to 1/250.
I bought the N90 back in the early 90's and still have it. I have the multi function back on it. I loved this camera and still own it.
It's a pleasure to use, very fast focusing, and have taken some of what I consider my best photos with it. If you get a chance to buy the N90 I would highly recommend you do so!
The N90 (like the N8008s) has the 3 position power switch where you can disable autofocus beeping. The N90s only has a 2 position switch. Any idea how to disable autofocus beeping on that?
The N90S does not beep when you achieve focus unless it was set up with Nikon photo secretary or the Sharp wizard organizer.
@@julesvuottosphotofocus4696Thanks for that information. I was wondering if that was how it was set. I had purchased this used (F90s) back in 2019 to compliment my F-801s which I've had since the 90s. I had forgotten about the photo secretary and Sharp wizard organizer and was doing to see if it was a setting on the databack.
Are you not able to multi-exposures with the n90s
Not as is. There is a different back you can get for double exposures.
I wonder if you could paint the back with plastidip?
@@comfortablyblind6853 I’m not sure about that, but you can just remove the stickie material using denatured alcohol.
@@julesvuottosphotofocus4696 Yes, and I have. Cleans sticky stuff well.
Thank you for putting this video together, very informative. I just ordered an F90X with the MB10 grip, $50.00 USD shipped. From the pictures on the posting, it looks to be in great shape and it's tested with a 6 month warranty.
Looking forward to runnung some expired Kodak Max 400 thru it to make sure it's fully functional.
Great. You got a very good deal.
i have one of these for my photography II class and i was wondering, how much do these cost? and mine doesn’t show my f stop it just shows - - next to f?
Thank you so much for this video. I appreciate the detail and explanation. I have had this camera for a while now and now im feeling informed. ^_^
Will this take an AF lens with no aperture ring?
Hi Jack, thank you for your question. Yes, it will take a G lens. I tried my 24-120 F4.0 AFS G lens and it worked fine in shutter priority and program mode.
This is very informative! I do have a question, if you don't have film in it, will it automatically advance after you press the shutter button?
The shutter should activate but it will not advance the film because there isn’t any film in the camera. It will display E. For empty.
I inherited an F90, with an F4 and an F2 FM (I'm a Canon Shooter since the eighties)
Among the tree cameras, I think the F90 is the most usable and enjoyable, with a decent construction but a weight for human being. The autofocus is far more reliable then the "supposedly" more PRO F4 and, in it's own way, I think the camera interface is better thought after then comparable T90 or T70 from Canon. Unfortunately I had to remove all the gunky rubbery coating from the back of the camera, which was annoying, being a full MF26 digital cover, but everything still works.
If I'm feeling "retro" I still take my AE1-P, as it's much more pleasant camera to use then the F2 FM, but I can understand how much attractive must have been in the nineties to switch to these full electronic cameras, able to show full informations through a simple LCD rather then running all around the body checking if everything was OK. Despite being dated, this F90 looks much less cheesily "high tech" plastic fantastic then equivalent Minoltas, Canon, Olympus and Mamiyas of the same time. It looks, even today more like a Professional tool rather then a slap face tech-statement of a gone era.
The F4 could be probably used to hammer down a box of nails and still come out better then the nails themselves, while the F90, being plastic, is a bit more prone to scratching, but it's much more comfortable to carry around, and, all the internal mechanics look to be top notch, on par with what you expect from a pro camera.
I agree with you that the F90 has better AF than the F4. I was shooting pro football with the F4 and 300mm 2.8 when I tried a Canon EOS-1 with the Canon 3002.8 EF. It was far superior. The Nikon F100 AF was much better than the F4 as well. Thanks for watching my video.
Flash sync speed is up to 1/8000 with the proper speedlite
The problem we have here in Australia is that film has become practically and financially unaffordable. When it costs you north of $100 to buy a roll of film, get it processed and then scanned, what amateur can afford that? Yes, you can develop the negatives yourself, but that requires equipment and facilities in your home, specially if you go to having an enlarger and chemicals etc for printing. If you want to have a high res scan, say at least 24MP and 3000ppi, then a suitable scanner will cost you more than your camera and lenses.
I see no solution to this problem. So it deeply saddens me that I can't pursue my hobby that I enjoyed for 40 years.
I understand, that’s why I shoot very little film these days. You can find older DSLR’s fairly cheap. That is probably a better way to go.
I had the 8008s that I purchased used, that gave me problems, so I bought the n90s new for 800. Still have it today after numerous Nikon D cameras. Great video as I learned a few things about this great film camera. A bit heavy and noisy, but it provided good transition to the D70,D200,D700,D4.
Glad to be of help. Thanks for watching.
Thank you for video. I bought an F90X a week ago for $55 including shipping and customs. I have a few rolls of negatives and maybe some Fuji Velvia in the freezer.
Great deal. Enjoy the camera. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for this really clear and informative video. Expands on the user manual to make understanding of all the functions so much easier. The camera has a deserved reputation and I consider myself fortunate to own one in really good condition acquired from the original buyer/owner.
Thank you Ian.
Paid $750 for mine back in the 90s. Still worth it!
I forget what I paid for mine in the 90’s but it was probably about what you paid. I bought one a few years ago for under 30.00. Thanks for watching.
Just picked up this camera and couldn't be happier, huge amount of features. Too long have I been using a broken light meter fully manual SLR from the 70s
In its day it was one of the best auto focus cameras and still a fine film camera today.
Is the same as the F90x as I’m looking for battery holder for my F90x?
Yes
Great straight to the point and excellent video content, best instruction video on the F/N 90 range on RUclips. Just to add that the batteries last a lot longer on the F/N 90s than the F100. And the Nikon matrix system is the best used on any film camera ever made in my opinion. All this and AA batteries, what's not to like.
Thank you for your comments.
Thanks for your comments
I attached a modern 85mm 1.8 prime nikkor, and I can't set the aperture in manual mode. Is there a way to set choose my aperture? It sets it to f16 and I can't change it.
If it’s a G lens with no aperture ring it must be used in either program mode or shutter priority mode.
@@julesvuottosphotofocus4696 Thank you!
Great video and compliments well the user manual! My brother gave me his N90S two years ago; however, I'd prefer to use it w/o the battery box. I haven't been successful in locating a battery door, can you assist? Best Regards, Jay.
Great informative video! Is that the original strap? Any recommendations for ones similar? Cheers.
Thank you. It’s not the original strap.I also highly recommend the Nikon 8008 and the F100.
Thanks for the response and recommendations. Any recommendations for straps that work on the N90s? @@julesvuottosphotofocus4696
For event photography (loud concerts etc) would you choose the F5 over the f90x? I currently only have the 50mm 1 4 but I am looking to purchase the 35-70mm f2 8. I currently have the f90x and the f70
Use what you have the f90x is fine. Save your money for a fast lens.
Hi Jules, great Review ! I do have my F90x since 1996. (N90s into the US).
What is the light bar on the top in front of the hot shoe for?
It lights up to illuminate the readouts at the bottom of the viewfinder. Shutter speed, aperture ect.
Thanks a lot, really helpful video and probably will rewatch a couple of times. I've got this camera about a year ago and loved to know the electronic rangefinder feature def will come handy.
I have a question, I'm struggling opening the pc connection cap. Is it supposed to go off in the same direction as the 10pin connector's cap? the pc one seems to be ultra stucked. If you have any recommendation for my situation would be well received.
Thanks again for the video!
Try counter clockwise.
Hi! Thank you very much for your video! It's very interesting, given with excellent explaining and love to camera as well! I have N90 and I love it! Thank you once more.
Thank you for for kind words
