Keeping hairs is a part of hukm. Hukm of the lord. It is acceptence the way the waheguru or lord created us. We have to accept ourselves first than to accept anything else. It is "like this is the way lord cteated me and this is the way I accept his will". Accepting that whatever happens because of his will. A person going against values is also in his will. A person following his path is also in his will. Sikhi is not a way of life but a way to get out of this cycle of life and death.

    • @avish987

Ssookawai first try to understand this with an open mind. the concept of prophet in sikhi is not what you believe. when we say guru nanak dev ji or guru teg bahadur ji don't persieve that we are talking about the bodies visible to us. these bodies are refered to as mere clothes of the soul. it is the soul to which we are referring to. all souls are part of parmeshwar, allah, god whatever u may call him. the purpose of life is to get united with the one from which we are departed. when your soul or innerself is one and u are totally detached from this world then that stage you only say what the parmeshwar or god wishes you to say. u have risen above maya or this created world and give his message to people who wish to be out of this circle of life and death. that is why it is hukm. but hukm is far more greater than my explanations. every thing is hukm. the good or bad. nothing is without his concent.
when i say that i am under his hukm it is a thing that i have accepted the way you have made me. you know best that you created me as you wished. sikh word was used for the deciples who had shunned hinduism and islam but talk only about god and its path.

People who claim keeping hair is unclean should realise that descriptions of all early prophets; Abraham, Moses, Jesus are all shown with long hair and beards, the Prophet Muhammad is described as having a beard and having hair between his earlobes and shoulders, the Nazarite vow of early Jews states "They must never cut their hair throughout the time of their vow, for they are holy and set apart to the LORD. Until the time of their vow has been fulfilled, they must let their hair grow long”. The Lord Buddha kept uncut hair during his deep states of Meditation, numerous Hindu Gods, Sadhus have kept their hair. How can keeping hair be unclean when all the greats of religion kept hair?

A lot of comments about hygiene and..islam and sikhi..and it is through comments i am learning more.
There are some who will say about hygiene, that people doesn't look good with those hairs, and i also saw before a comment about couples pleasing each other by keeping themselves hygienic... Etc etc..
I learned how insecurity, feeling of being not perfect, competition in looks...affects a lot of people so much..and possibly, they are not aware of this.
And the main difference i see is this:
While others talk about THEMSELVES, about how they will look, about OTHERS, how others look for them.. How to please others... How to make themselves look better..
Sikhi will just always talk about connection to God.. One's attachment to God. Respect on God's creation. Acceptance on how God made us...and how God loves us so much.. .
It is only us, our way of thinking, and our influence from others that makes us what we are now.
I love Sikhi so much. They only have God in their minds and service to others... not how to please oneself and others..

What can we say to Pehnji's who have been "shaping eyebrows" or removing hair from arms / face to fit in with society? The topic came up when I mentioned I would hope that my future wife would be somebody who does not need/want to do such things, and I was called Kattar (too strict). Am I wrong? Or is this actually too hard to answer? I am finding it hard to find historic references that aren't just opinions and it's bugging me ji. Thank you so much for any help you can give.

The immense pyarr for kes is applied to every part of our body if we're a Sikh, regardless the gender. So this isn't kattar rehat, this is bajjar rehat. Disobeying is doing kurehat and ultimately not respecting the aadesh of the guru sahib. So you're not wrongy veerji!
And I'm sorry if I couldn't explain it very well but I hope it somehow helps your doubt.

You are right . Kesh means hair on head . Keeping hair symbolizes optimistic life and free spirit (opposite of slavery in which hair of slaves was cut in gurus era). Keeping beard was part of Punjabi culture. Also long beard look good with turban generally and makes a man look more masculine . Keeping kesh is mandatory and keeping beard is optional . Keeping kesh is mentioned in 52 hukams of guru gobind singh and bhai nand lal rehetnama . Most authentic documents

A few points to make, one, a female looks bad according general concensus if she doesn't shave. But okay, fine. If Kesh is that important, keep it.
But in regards to hygiene, Muslim men are told to grow the beard, and keep hair but shave public hair in the arm pits and private parts only. They are not allowed to shave hair anywhere else unless it becomes excessive. If a person shaves their pit and private parts hair, their body is more hygienic. No doubt. People who grow hair in those places have more spots and sweat more. If you sweat more you smell more, and a bad smell is accoscisted with bad hygiene. There is a saying in Islam that cleanliness is half the deen. A Muslim has to pray 5 times a day and do wudhu 5 times a day using water. There is water in the dessert the prophet came from. So don't be silly...

    • @daman9304

It's not being silly! This religion is based upon respecting god and appreciate, accepting the way we're being made. It's forbidden to cut hair from my part of your body and this is in SGGS and it's not unhygienic! As long as you bathe, even pubic parts will be hygienic. There are lots of people with uncut hair who are more hygienic than people who shave. So please respect!

Brother Im a Muslim. I've watched your preaches but Im upset that you pick on Islam. Sikhism teaches about equality, peace and harmony with other religions. But picking on Islam doesnt really portray what Sikhism teaches. You have your religion and I have mine. You have your beliefs and I have mine. Lets respect each other's belief. And we dont have a problem with keeping our hair long. If u take care of ur hair well then thats good. I've never heard of any teachings in Islam about how unhealthy it is to keep the hair ON OUR HEAD long. But I've came across teachings which says we should shave our pubic areas because it is unhygenic to keep the hair in that area. I mean its true. Bacteria build ups are high at our pubics if we dont get rid of our pubic hair. That is why we're taught to keep clean our pubic parts. However the hair on our head is allowed to be kept long as long as we take proper care of it.
