- Wells-next-the-Sea is a seaside holiday town close to Sheringham and Cromer in Norfolk, England. Situated on the North Norfolk coast, it lies around 20 miles east of King's Lynn. The town is part of the North Norfolk District and falls within the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Wells-next-the-Sea is known for its picturesque harbor and beautiful sandy beach, which stretches for miles. The town is named after the natural wells, or springs, that can be found in the area. These wells provided a source of fresh water for passing ships in the past.
One of the notable landmarks in Wells-next-the-Sea is its quay, which is a bustling hub of activity. From the quay, you can take a scenic boat trip along the narrow channel known as the Wells Harbour Railway, which leads to the open sea. The beach is popular with visitors, offering opportunities for sunbathing, swimming, and walking.
Wells-next-the-Sea has a charming town center with narrow streets and traditional flint-faced cottages. You'll find a range of independent shops, cafes, pubs, and restaurants offering local produce and seafood delicacies. The town is also home to St. Nicholas Church, an impressive medieval church that dominates the skyline.
The area around Wells-next-the-Sea is known for its natural beauty and wildlife. It is part of the Holkham National Nature Reserve, which includes salt marshes, sand dunes, and pine woodlands. Birdwatchers flock to the area to observe a variety of bird species, including migratory birds and wading birds.
Wells next the Sea is a popular destination for tourists seeking a peaceful coastal retreat, with its unspoiled natural surroundings, charming atmosphere, and outdoor activities.

Brilliant, that brought back a lot of memories . Wells is a lovely place , there’s also the fantastic beach and the beach huts .
Wells is also really accepting of dogs, the woods and beach together are excellent, the tide goes out so far and leaves large puddles for small dogs to run through. Most of the shops have dog water bowls outside and even the little bakery has a selection of homemade dog treats.
You really should visit the most amazing beach along the walk way from the harbour it’s like a Caribbean beach with beach huts on stilts such a shame you missed it . I often visit wells I love it I enjoyed the video
Next time!
We went to that beach during that really hot summer last year, you are right it is like the Carribbean, beautiful.
Went there last summer too. Really hot couple of days. Beautiful place.
Lovely film of the harbour but the beach is the real hit .... 🥳
It is!
Best of the towns so far on this trip! Lovely!
The best!
We recently moved up from Hertfordshire to Norfolk and spend nearly every weekend at lovely Wells! It is just so picturesque ♥ Please go back and show the most wonderful beach in the country (obviously my unbiased opinion 😆🤣) with the prettiest beach huts and lovely pine trees. Also at the end of the video you missed the opportunity to cross the road into Buttlands, some wonderful houses around a very quaint village green and two very nice pubs (The Globe being one).....Thank you for a great walk 👍👍👍👍👍
We enjoyed a brilliant week in Wells, in 2022. We absolutely loved it. Your video is brilliant and captures what the town is like, but there's even more to it than that. Even after a week there we feel like we didn't see everything. One day we'll return!
You missed the best part! the actual beach with the pine forest and huts 😉 the harbour area is also very nice though. I need to go back soon
I filmed the beach it's coming in it's own video soon!
@@GimbalWalkTV Oh thanks for letting me know.
Only discovered this little gem of a place earlier this year. Fantastic
I use to come here as a teenager in the 80's. It was our go too holidays. We use to treck through the pinewoods to the beach. We stayed at pinewood caravan park. We had fish and chips on the harbour front. The walk was quite long from the caravan park to the harbour, or you could get a little train. Those buildings by the harbour were not there in the 80's. Good memories. Thankyou for this. 🙂
Have been on holiday there many years ago. Nearly got cut off on a sand bar by the incoming tide. Still enjoyed the holiday my first camping experience made it something to remember.
Yep - one of my favourite places too - been there many times. The Llamas and ducks next to the church are always fun to see too. Don't tell everyone what a lovely place it is 🙂
Beautiful part of the country like England used to be
That is a wonderful place for a holiday and walk round the shops and restaurants and fishing for crabs for your lunch or tea and the pubs and nice and sunny day and the gifts shops and thanks for showing round the town and the beach it is a beautiful waters and seagulls boats thanks Neil
Yes, thank you
So many memories of visiting here. You must go to the beach!
As a number of folk have said, there are many aspects that you missed, like the beach, the churches and The Buttlands and, of course, the East End, but this is only to be expected in one short wander! Talking of 'quaint', The High Street has its charm even 'though all of its many 'working town' shops and pubs from the past are now only hinted at as shopfronts to the residential premises behind them. While on the Quay and showing the old Granary, you did miss the opportunity to explain that it ( including its iconic loading gantry ) has now been turned into luxury flats! Even so, this is one of the better videos I have seen on the town!
Wells is beautiful love the fish and chips stayed in a hotel there it has a outstanding beach
It does - that’s coming up soon too
Thank you for all the videos they are great. Love Wells and Sherringham and Hemsby. We are going to book a Norfolk holiday for next year x
Thank you for your time taken to show the location. Will definitely plan to visit.
Thank you!
Paying it a visit in September .Forgotten how beautiful Wells is till I watched your video .
It really is!
I Live in Norwich always go to Wells Next The Sea Fantastic Place to Visit
Lovely place!
Great video, love the place but you must go back and video the wonderful beach, sand dunes and colourful beach huts its stunning . Brought back happy memories of the last holiday I had there with my parents.
Thankyou so much 😊🤗
Beach coming soon
Lovely walk 😎 Wells is on my to do list of destinations 👍
Great place
Booked a week there in September - dog friendly dog beach is the best ever 👍
Your channel is perfect to chill with on a weekend 😊
Happy to hear that!
Off to Norfolk this August so thanks for posting this video 👍
Have fun!
See you there
1977 was the last time I was in Norfolk for a holiday, so I'm really looking forward to it.😎🥵
My absolute favourite beach, I live in Norfolk so I am biased 😂shame you missed the actual beach, best fish and chips too 😊
Wells is so lovely and we have been there several times over the years whilst staying in Sheringham.
Good to see your video as not been for about 3 years.
Glad you enjoyed it!
As said previously quite a lot missing from this vlog. They do have a Summer holidays Carnival week. Also usually do a film sing along event on the Buttlands green grass park area at the top of Staithe street. Very popular films have included Grease, Calamity Jane...etc. words are shown on the screen to sing along too. Good arcades, some with ticket machines. Sea fishing trips. And you saw lots of Lobster pot cages, as very large Lobster fields out at sea for the fishing trawlers. Seal sight seeing trips are down the road at Blakeney, Cley and Morston. Burnham Overy Staithe is also worth a visit, although similar to Blakeney, Cley and Morston. Great Beaches at Wells, Holkham, Brancaster and further along the coast both ways.
Thank you
I live here. How lucky am I. Feel so privileged .
Very!
Been here so many times as a kid would love to go back someday
You should if you can - great place
I did like Wells it is very pretty there. I did not get as far as the beach as it was too far for me to walk (I will try and do that next time) but there was very little in the town itself. I prefer Sheringham and Cromer.
We used to go there on holiday when I was a youngster, many fond memories, deffinately worth a visit 😊
Definitely! 👍👍
And me abigail. Late 70's to the 80's. Its changed a bit.
Looks nicer than Cromer saw a walking tour there recently and I think Wells is much nicer. I will put it on my itinerary for September as I took Cromer off. Wells seems to make a feature of the crab which is why I thought of visiting Cromer but there was nothing relating to Cromer crab in the place a bit short sighted of the town. Thanks for sharing this video❤️
Stunning ❤❤
Great video Neil it’s been a while since I was there must visit again soon
Another great & fantastic video of WELLS NEXT THE SEA | Seaside holiday town better than Sheringham or Cromer?I have been once with my brothers. i like all of Norfolk but not Hunstanton!.✔✔✔✔✔✔💚💚
Many thanks!
👍👍👍👍Another Nice Walk . Thank you !
Thanks 👍
Love the norfolk coast wells cromer sheringham hemsby and great yarmouth are all beautiful.have you been to hunstanton
Such a nice harbour, one of the most beautiful parts of Norfolk, did you know there was also a large beach there?
Superb place, looks like we were there when you filmed.
Word of caution,be wary of chip shop starting with P, obscene pricing, never found the need to scan pricing in a chip shop, wish I had! Other than that wonderful.
That's interesting. Some years ago since I was a frequent visitor to Wells, but I do have no hesitation in saying that of the two fish and chip shops there, one was best avoided and the other was outstandingly good (at least at the height of the season when demand was high). Taking account of the queues outside the respective establishments, I would say my judgment was shared by others. French's is the one to go to!
Lovely spot, but it gets go busy now during the summer. Now I tend to visit out of season.
Don’t blame you
Were is the harbour the amount of times I have visited Wells and never knew there was a little street with so much going on loved this video now I have to go back and visit
I taught my two sons how to row a boat in the harbour many years ago. We would row from behind the lifeboat station up into the town end of the harbour and back, but only when the tide was in. Also pleasse show the narrow gauge steam train that runs alongside the enbankment from Pine trees campsite to the carpark behind the harbour masters office.
The little train is not there anymore
stunning ,its like you say bit like old Bridlington and chapel st leonards ,cant get over the grassy plains dotted around in the water would love to see it in the winter .
Hello, I qm from Colombia S.A and I really like your videos. Thanks
Glad you like them! Thanks for watching!
Why did you not go to the beach it’s got beautiful beach huts and the beach is better than all the north Norfolk beaches
I did
It’s coming in a separate video
@@GimbalWalkTV well done my kids spent all their child hood on wells beach it was the best time of their lives iam now 87 my kids are noe in their
I liked it much better 30 yrs ago when you could ride the little train from the harbour down to the caravan park where you could take a bargain holiday close to the beach. There was a brilliant little shop in town where you could shop for loads of food bargains. Parking was easier and cheaper. I felt disappointed when we visited last year. Everything's tried to go too 'up market'.
The only thing about Norfolk, you need a car mostly to get to these places if you don’t drive and since the 1970’s trains don’t run to wells any more or any other places that as lost this service to parts of the uk as well as Norfolk or even Suffolk as I live on the border and the town I come from had two stations now only one….😢
That’s sad to hear
Are the trains not very good in Norfolk now?
I've been here a few times, Neil. Wells is an amazing place that introduced me to Samphire with a splash of vinegar... Lovely. Youve definitely encouraged me to make a return trip. 👍
Can't believe ypu missed the beach😢
I filmed it - it’s coming on a separate video
You've gone and done it again ! Wells is one of my most favourite places(as well as the rest of North Norfolk) :) I first went there with my friend (and then boss) who was born and raised in Norfolk. I loved it so much that I even got married there. The last time I was in Wells was in 2000 and it's so lovely to see it again. Thank you xxx
Great video Wells used to be. Norfolk is best kept secret, but now it’s over run by hipsters and second homeowners I’m afraid.
Boat trip to see seals is good. And go inland to walsingham church and animal sanctuary
It would be nice if I knew what country this is at.
How do you mean
@@GimbalWalkTV The story never tells the viewer what country they’re in.
@@arthurkeith1561 I tuhink there's a flag on the photo image of the place
@@GimbalWalkTV you think
Cromer is definately the best seaside tiwn 😊 i was brought up nearby . The pier is ace wonderful promenade. The smell of the Sea . Love it all ❤ Thanks for your walks Gimbel.. Very enjoyable x
He's walked 500 miles!... and will walk 500 more! Just 4 U ! 🎉
🤣🤣❤️
Hope you're ok after your fall on Hunstanton🤕 I had a day trip to Wells while on holiday in Hunstanton. I've been before but this time it was May. Very windy and quiet and some of the shops weren't open but it was still a lovely walk round with the dog. It's a beautiful place😍
Wrong music, right sight!
ok
It´t nice that you showed the tourists side of the place. But like any tourists towns there are also the down side to places..like junkies ...crack heads and alcoholics...did you see any of those ?...stay well and stay safe.
No - never see them when I'm there to be honest
I think it's one of those things that if you look for those kinds of things' you can find them in any town, village or city
@@GimbalWalkTV thank you very much for your answer
YOu're welcome!@@rogerbixley6911
Crack heads and alcoholics? In Wells? Where in the town did you see them and when? We have been to the town dozens of times and haven't seen any.
I spend a lot of time in wells for work (lots of holiday lets) and I've never understood the attraction, 500 yards from the harbour there's a less than salubrious council estate and the only shop is a co-op, parking is always a nightmare and in the winter it's a really depressing place.
Why would a council estate some way away be an issue for holidaymakers though?
@@GimbalWalkTV ok, without wishing to cause offence to the good people of Wells, if you walked around that little town for long you would've seen people who you wouldn't want living in your street, did you ever watch shameless? I also think a lot of Wells looks very tired and considering how much it costs to rent a holiday home for a week there i reckon there are much nicer places in norfolk to stay.
Jesus.... Bet you're fun at parties 🍩
A truly lovely place. Like chalk and cheese with Hemsby.👍👍
I've seen a lot worse than Hemsby! at least theres an actual sandy beach.
Far too busy for my liking, I dont enjoy people dodging, especially in the heat but the water looked pretty nice at least
The Prosecco Ghetto
