Hey Rob thanks for those stories, painting over some colours can be difficult as original may "bleed through" cover up but think slumlord just didnt want to pay as that cover up would be expensive.
Can confirm this, trying to paint white over black can often not work too well. In addition, a lot of layers and kids running around splatting thick globs of paint everywhere. That is not going to be easily covered without stripping it all off.
This was my thought too, sounded like a cheap individual. If you try and go cheap, it's going to cost far more in the end to fix it than if you'd done the job properly at cost the first time.
I honestly thought op was going to say the cousin and her wife painted esoteric, occult, and other such symbols on the walls. But letting their kids do whatever was awesome!
Right, they didn't just paint the walls, but also the ceiling. And they painted every room, which means they probably painted over tiles and wood. We're talking redoing kitchens and bathrooms. And then there is the multiple layers of black paint, which you don't just primer over or paint over because that black paint is going to show through the new paint. And that is more layers on the wall. And this isn't a car you sand down, you need paint stripper to remove. The process is like removing wallpaper but with paint stripper instead of a steamer. If it were a light coat of paint, yeah, sanding is an option but with the layers they put on, that is just going to throw paint dust in the air. After the paint comes off, they're going to need to wash the walls and ceiling to make sure the paint stripper is off the wall and it can be repainted. This guy was probably banking on that lawsuit which I imagine was expensive before the judge slapped him with paying them for damages. He sued, at most, 10 people in one go. Not to mention he lost 5 renters in one go, he was probably going to evict them one at a time.
I have know some that painted their walls with stripes. Then years later, tried to paint over it with primers, paint cover ups like Kilz. But no mater how many coats they put on, the stripes would still show through. That is probably the case with that last story. Never paint your walls with dark or super bright colors ... because you probably can't cover them up.
The paint story made sense to me. I like to paint on canvases and the like and some colors are extremely hard to cover even with good primer. With what Ops cousin did and with what she let her lil ones do it would take a good sanding and several coats of primer per room or wall. Adding in the landlord likely was trying to be a cheapskate and do the work himself and likely didn't know what to do or how to fix it
Black is an extremely hard color to cover up. So is red. It would pretty much require SANDING of all the walls and ceilings for even several coats of a good primer to cover over it. I would probably be cheaper and easier to replace all of the drywall and trim.
17:24 "what the heck was in this paint that couldn't be covered up by a really good primer" They added many layers of black paint. It is horrendously difficult to completely cover black paint with another color.
Dark colors like black can't just be painted over, it takes layers and layers of primer but you are also forgetting all the neon colors they added on top of the black.
An unstable crane is absolutely no joke. Goes double for metalworking mills, where crane accidents are CATASTROPHIC and impossible to mitigate once started. Story 3 OP's cousin said they applied as many hands of black paint as they could, so it was a THICK covering. If you just try to splat primer over it, the black shows under it unless you apply enough primer to almost double the thickness of the wall. And sanding it down? Heh, good luck, hope you have an orbital sander ready with A LOT of sanding discs, because Scumlord would have to file the walls almost to the concrete to remove everything. Good job, girls 👹👍
Scuff up the paint (scratching it us as if you're going to use paint stripper on it, you want the scratches for the mud to grab), add a thin even skim coat of Drywall Joint Compound (mud), sand smooth, Prime and Paint...very little thickness added and you don't need to worry about the black showing through...Had to do that once with a Red wall and while sanding the mud isn't fun (ALWAYS WEAR A FILTER MASK), once the Compound was sanded smooth, the new Primer and Paint went on as easily as if it was a new built Drywall...
The best way to get black paint covered is to completely remove it first, no reasonable amount of primer would cover it up and it is expensive anyways. So he tries to cut his loses and sell the place

I'm wondering how the footprints got there. Did the cousin and her wife hold the kids up and let them "walk" on the ceiling? 😆 that kind of sounds like something my brother would do!
Last story: If the black paint was also enamel paint, then not only is it the worst color to cover (bleed through), the enamel must be either chipped/scraped off or (as you said) covered with acrylic primer .... multiple, multiple layers of acrylic primer. Had a military buddy who said he had to primer the room 14 times until no black showed through. Now ... how -thick- is a wall painted at least 16x? My Dad was a crane man for a steel mill. This was forty years years ago . His was pretty much s "featherbedding" job, he had to be there for safety in most mills, but only moved stuff two or three times a shift. He spent the time reading. But there were the mills where you worked your arse off, and made "tonnage." Steel was leaving the country about then, and my Dad was able to retire. First story - i once worked for a factory - on of the products were parts for the central locking system of cars (mechanical - alot of years ago) - and the department head had almost all recipes (the parts wre made from carbon and resin) in his name - if they ever let him go, they could have closed the factory right after him leaving the building.
In regards to the painting, if I were to ever be in OP's cousin's shoes, I'd do all sorts of symbols of the occult, esoteric, and quite possibly "Satanic" variety.
As a former painter I can tell you that you get what you pay for and most scummy landlords don't want to pay for quality AND black and neon almost always bleed through. This is caused by the moisture of the new paint mixing with the new paint which is usually white as a base coat. No matter how many times you paint a low quality paint over premium paint it will invariably leak through. The 2 fixes for this are strip the paint (sanding takes multiple hours per foot at a cost of $15 per hour at minimum) sand blast (or the equivalent which will destroy the walls) or use a moderately cheap per can spray paint called Stopz which prevents leak through but would likely cost $90 (USD) to cover every 10 square feet of wall space (average apartment unit $15,000 to get 2 coats before starting the actual painting) calculations are very rough and the cost might be half that but it would still be insanely expensive.
Not a factory worker but I did work logistics, and we work kept to the same OSHA standards as foundries, factories, manufacturers, because it's a large building with heavy machinery and sensitive metals parts, and the best way for OSHA to be down your throat and up you butt, is when someone gets hurt when using green lighted faulty machinery.
Hey Rob okay with the last Story lets just say for one coat of black paint it takes on average 5 coats of white paint to get it to the point you can prime it and repaint it. And this more than doubles for each layer of black paint that has been painted on so if they painted 5 layers of black paint it would take probably 40 layers of white paint to get the wall to appoint where the black isn't coming through because black blocks out light completely where as white reflexive that's often why white is used as a primer because it helps reflect the colour of whatever paint you put on top doesn't matter if you're using a dark coloured paint you always use a white primer so it doesn't look like you've got a as darker wall so let's just say after five layers of black paint you're better off ripping the walls off putting new walls on and repainting them because you will never ever get the walls to appoint after five ways of black paint where you can repaint those walls so they useful even after about 40 layers white paint and re priming it you will never get that room to have a bright airy feel to it even if you use a white colour because the black will still be coming through underneath
For the paint one, if you go heavy black to a white color you often have to do 3 or so layers of paint to get it looking right. Otherwise you end up with dark spots. He would of had to spend 2-3 times as much money on paint just to get it looking decent. Not counting the man hours if he hired someone.
A little late to the comments here. If you ride out your lease, most of the time you have to have the place is same condition as move in. If evicted, the landowner is left with the mess. Edit to add for the last comment. OP talked about multiple layers. If you sand out bumps, you end up with flat spots or divots. You basically end up with waves. You can mud those over but that takes time and money. You can spray texture over it helps hide it be a lot of the times you can still see it and if people place pictures on the walls or bookshelves, you will definitely know the waves are there.
If I was in the same situation as in the last story. I would paint the whole apartment black so it would be hard to cover up. I would use anti-climb paint. Which is an oil baesd paint if I'm correct. Which take something like 10 years to dry.
If management thinks it is to much trouble and expense to not fix equipment, try the expense of being shut down after a major workplace injury or death for the investigation, and the trouble of legal costs and possible criminal charges. As an employee, if you know that you are violating safety rules, you can also be held liable, and may even be used as a scapegoat. You can also be denied workers compensation insurance for injuries if you violate the rules. Falling off the top two steps of a ladder and being injured is a common one. The company will have just cause to fire you for breaking safety rules, and can avoid the expense of your workers compensation expense.
Worked at a museum and some wooden interior walls were painted with a fire retardant paint which was just impossible to paint over. Even after 5+ layers it would still shine through or just cause the other paint to not stick at all. Ended up having to tear those walls down and put up new ones over the years as exhibitions moved around.
KCC two things it depends on the type of paint and how many coats were used. Lastly if they had a written permission from the land lord(which email is) that can override sections of the lease
Slumlord was probably to lazy to do even a MINOR sanding, before painting. So his paint job probably just made everything look like crap....and, then was too lazy to fix even that.
Last story: I'm not at all surprised that he gave up and tried to sell it, sanding off paint is labor intensive, I was in trade school and it took us 2 consecutive weeks to sand off the paint of one residence household, but I'm guessing this cheapskate didn't want to spend money to hire a crew to remove it so he tried to do it himself
I'm pretty sure the last story is fake. Just get a few rolls of cheap white wallpaper and cover everything up. Also as Rob said most (if not all) rent contracts have a passage about leaving white walls behind when you move out, so if the landlord had really sued, he would have won.

On the topic of the rental properties with the paint, the slumlord would either have to spend a lot of time and money painting it himself or a lot more money hiring professionals to do the painting, especially if any of the paint was left to dry with elevated texture that may require standing. After having to pay the restitution to the aggrieved families the slumlord probably doesn't have the money to spare and it's much cheaper to host the property on the market for sale as is then it is to do one of the two options above to make it more appealing to a buyer.

The Crane and management.. The case name for what they did was Wilful neglect. You know its broken but continue to use it anyway, even though its a safety concern. Depending on the company product.. The fines could be in multi-millions.

OSHA. Is. No. Joke. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration was created to protect the safety and health of workers in all sectors of the workforce. From construction to production to retail, we have an OSHA poster posted in every employee common area near the time clock that details all the requirements for chemical and flamable liquid use and storage and rules regarding workplace safety and environmental exposure requirements. It also requires all emergency exits to be free of obstruction at all times a building is occupied. OSHA regularly inspects all facilities and requires daily submission of logs. Failer to comply and violations all receive hefty fines. The worst violations can get a facility shut down completely until the violation is corrected.

Old woman Jenkins did this story also
Not a factory worker but I did work logistics, and we work kept to the same OSHA standards as foundries, factories, manufacturers, because it's a large building with heavy machinery and sensitive metals parts, and the best way for OSHA to be down your throat and up you butt, is when someone gets hurt when using green lighted faulty machinery.
Or he could get a few rolls of cheap wallpaper and cover everything up. I'm pretty sure the story is fake.
Black is a nigh on impossible colour to paint over. You need to strip the walls bare
Some EPIC MC today. Thanks much to all 3 OPs and KCC for this episode
I love Sweet malicious compliance! Thank you for the great stories Rob,I hope everybody is having the most amazing day today❤️☀️🌵☝️
If I was in the same situation as in the last story. I would paint the whole apartment black so it would be hard to cover up. I would use anti-climb paint. Which is an oil baesd paint if I'm correct. Which take something like 10 years to dry.
I was thinking that Restore 10X stuff that's meant for resurfacing decks. Really thick stuff and has a rough texture to it when dry :D
I would have used blood red paint lmao make it look similar to a murder scene
Good afternoon Rob
Happy Hump Day everyone
Slumlord was probably to lazy to do even a MINOR sanding, before painting. So his paint job probably just made everything look like crap....and, then was too lazy to fix even that.
0:00 people why like the video so they know they watched it “ARE YOU SURE ABOUT THAT”
Last story: I'm not at all surprised that he gave up and tried to sell it, sanding off paint is labor intensive, I was in trade school and it took us 2 consecutive weeks to sand off the paint of one residence household, but I'm guessing this cheapskate didn't want to spend money to hire a crew to remove it so he tried to do it himself
I'm pretty sure the last story is fake. Just get a few rolls of cheap white wallpaper and cover everything up. Also as Rob said most (if not all) rent contracts have a passage about leaving white walls behind when you move out, so if the landlord had really sued, he would have won.
Oh, you can paint over black paint, but it won’t”cover over” and the black will bleed through…
This is the first time I've seen a video with no dislikes. Keep kicking ass Rob!!
You don't use youtube that much, do you? RUclips doesn't show the number of dislikes under a video anymore, they removed that feature at the end of 2021, mainly because their last Rewind at the end of 2018 got around 3 million likes and 20 million dislikes.
This video here has 10 dislikes at the moment, there are browser apps that let you see the number of dislikes again.
Do you have to be rude? I use RUclips regularly, however I do not pay attention every time the app updates to what has changed. My bad for thinking that this amazing man was doing something cool. Next time, just scroll on. Thank you.
@@tiffanykendall6137 What exactly in my comment was rude? That was a legitimate question and then I explained to you why dislikes aren't shown under the videos anymore (and how you might be able to see them again, if you want to). Just because somebody points out that you might be wrong doesn't mean that person is rude.
You don't use RUclips that much, do you? That statement was completely unnecessary. It comes off as rude. Without that statement, I wouldn't have said anything.
@@tiffanykendall6137 Ok, English isn't my first language, being rude was definitely not my intention.
The color is a nuisance, nothing more. Just get white wallpaper and rent it out again.
@@MyRegardsToTheDodo I've never hung wallpaper myself but I do know if the surfaces aren't sanded flat beforehand the wallpaper doesn't sit nice, if the OP let the kids smear the paint it's unlikely it was perfectly flat
@@jeannebuttons5301 Then don't get smooth wallpaper, wood-chip or ingrain wallpaper should do (I don't know what the correct name in English is). Or sand the worst smears down, shouldn't take that long.
@@MyRegardsToTheDodo realistically the slumlord doesn't want to spend any more money than he has to because he has to pay restitution, I'm not familiar with the cost of wallpaper but I'm sure it's not cheap to wallpaper whole residences by yourself
Good morning Rob! Thanks for all your excellent stories, love listening while going about my day. Especially your personal comments about the stories 😄
Rob: if I can't find a sponsorship, I'll make one instead
I've been offered many over the past 3 years of doing KCC videos, but didn't want to subject my viewers / listeners to that. I like the clean experience. Besides, RUclips already serves enough ads! 😉
With all the black and neon colors everyone did, it would be easier and cheaper to just strip to the studs and replace the drywall.
Thanks Rob!! 🙉🙉💖💖💖💖💖💖
The Crane and management.. The case name for what they did was Wilful neglect. You know its broken but continue to use it anyway, even though its a safety concern.
Sadly OP not filling in the safety checklist.. Involves OP in the neglect part. Failure to complete the checklist means that you know something is wrong and refuse to sign off on it.
Not filling in the safety checklist and using the equipment anyway.. Makes you complicit in the problem.
Fines in my country start at 300,000 and only go upwards. for the person. Depending on the company product.. The fines could be in multi-millions.
Slum lord was planning on selling the building anyway. Likely the real reason for staging the evictions. He Likely got less because of the paint. Some paint textures are hard to paint over. Of course, some light sanding and a high quality primer will cover almost any sin, but does this guy strike you as a guy who is willing to pay for a high quality primer?
Black paint is almost impossible to cover up. I had a friend find out the hard way.
Good morning Rob
OSHA. Is. No.
Black takes 6 coats of Primer to cover and still then you better be repainting with a earth tone or you will still see the Black. 😳😳😳😜
Good afternoon
black and neon will soak through primer paint's and multiple layers afterward
If you want to have somebody's sports logo show through primer and 2 coats, oil based paints my friend! Mind you these were artists oils so they only took a week to show, had to put 2 more coats before we bailed.
Good Morning. It is always a better day after your videos.
Use a Sharpie markers and draw an a wall.
You can paint that over with what ever. Up
The paint of the Sharpie will bleed throw.
Have seen a painter trying to do cover up a Sharpie tag. after the 7th layer of paint made to cover up shit and the Sharpie colour was viewable after a few days. that shit is easier to just cut away.
Black and red are the worse for bleed through
My eyes have seen the Truth thanks to The Like button. You too can see Truth. Come and join us. The Like button is an eye opener.
The worst color to paint over is RED!!! It bleeds through everything. & if you make a pattern with it using black or white... smh. imagine a blood red room.
My mom painted my bedroom when i was like 8 and she painted is an old semi gloss paint color called "Rollerblade Blue" and it was a neon blue my room got painted white when i moved out at 19 and im 36 now and my room is STILL blue the semi gloss neon paint shows through 1 sanding to remove the semi gloss 3 heavy coats of professional grade primer and 3 coats of a hogh coverage white and my room is now a bluish grey color im 36 now neon paints are bo joke
MrBallen would disagree about your treatment of the like button.
the people working at the factory are the ones responsible for their own safety if they're not going to walk off the job because they're told to do something unsafe they are the idiots
But how would they auction the equipment , etc...with his patented parts? I guess the parts were surrendered with the Cease and Desist Order maybe?
It isn't just Parts that can be Patented, it can also be processes, being that the guy is in logistics my guess is that is where the patent is.
Today’s ‘Sponsor’ has been has been Duly Appreciated! -As Always! 👍🏽😄
And as ALL Your Videos ((As Well As Other ‘Sponsors’ *Should* Be! ))
it was lead paint rob...lead paint can't be covered..evil laughing
OSHA rules are written in the blood of others
osha, I think the company get major fines !!! I don't know have look into this...
😀
Never screw or attempt to Shaft the Logistics person...
ESPECIALLY if they own the Patents that are the Foundation for your ENTIRE Business...cause when they yank the Patented Items/Processes out from under your Business, it all comes crashing down around your ears...
😄😁😆😅😂🤣
My cousin is in the hospital with E Coli :(
