The main reason the city has allowed this to happen is. They were trying to not arrest and lock them up. Saying these people have other problems, besides drug addiction. Their intentions were good, but the residents and businesses have suffered for this. When you are in city council, you don’t have to see or live with the problem. The city made it difficult for the police to arrest and move the addicted and homeless. All of California is suffering from this poor policing.

David Chiu is legit. Worked his way up before the deterioration. He is a lifelong, practical, forward thinking SF resident. Only one in that pack I trust. He did the right thing initially and will sort it out.

The tenderloin had always been an armpit before I moved there in the early 2,000s.
I've just moved to Seattle where the exact same thing has happened over decades. The most historic and scenic area around city hall, Pioneer Sq, Occidental Sq et cetera Is strewn with tents and people laid out on sidewalks.
I waited for 5 minutes for a friend a few days ago and witnessed 5 brazen drug deals just feet away from me. No care or concern, just the desire for the drug and the money they make.
Hundreds of millions of lost real estate, and tourism revenue wasted that could have been spent on so many things to improve the city centers.
Pathetic.
Haight-Ashbury was notorious for drugs and crime back in the 1970s.

The tenderloin district has always been sketchy. I’m not saying it isn’t worse, or that the worsening should be allowed, but the residents always knew they weren’t moving into a nice neighborhood.

I suspect that the voters of San Francisco are very slowly coming to the understanding that if they continue vote for politicians who pursue foolish & ignorant policies, then when the outcomes are destructive, ruinous & toxic both to people & to neighborhoods, then they (the voters) should not be surprised. We need to remember that some people are dense, and that realization may take a few years.

When i moved to SF in 2005, the tenderloin was already like that, fewer streets therefore..the only time i walked through i saw a woman pedestrian get slapped on the face by a drug addict.. never went back alone.. during my 18 years in SF the successive mayors did NOTHING positive to clean those streets, they only created a 100,000k annual salary job for the poop patrol. During COVID it was the worst , the entire downtown was a homeless camp.. i went to check it out, it was horrifying to see all those meth zombies .the city provided free drugs, booze etc to those people to keep them ""quiet" during those 3 years of covid hell.. keep voting for democrats SF.. like other cities Baltimore, Chicago, NY, Seattle , Portland etc ..people never learn!! Unbelievable.
