  • Silent Hill 2 is one of the most meticulously detailed, wonderfully crafted video games to ever exist. Today, I want to talk about all the details, both big and small, that I love about one of my favourite video games.
(P.S. Somehow totally forgot to include Angela's final scene in this list... oopsies.)

Love your reading of "there was a hole here, it's gone now." I always kind of took it to be one of the things the developers wanted us to interpret literally, that it was a reflection on the way the town changes and it also foreshadows the hole James jumps into. I genuinely like the alcohol reading better, I can't believe it never occurred to me. Very nice!

The voice-acting is probably one of the best "happy accident's" ever. According to Guy Cihi (James), the Silent Hill creators had no clear voice-director. So the actors themselfs had to perform the dialogue as is. Since none of them really was "trained" actors, the dialogue came of as something in the vein of "Uncanny Valley". "Team Silent" actually wanted classically trained actors. Voice-acting was even looked down upon by professional actors. And finding people overall in Tokyo that knew perfect Japanese and English wasn't as common as it is today.
So you didn't have a pool of talent to pull from.
The voice-acting was not supposed to be "Lynchian" or uncanny. it just came out that way.

I always figured that must've been the case with SH2, the voice acting feels somewhat amateur but... it ends up helping the overall vibe of the game. I didn't know that was factually the case though, thank you for sharing!!

A few things I love that weren’t mentioned:
The overhead shot of Angela getting up from in front of the mirror wall (when she says “how do you know that?”). Maybe my favorite shot of the entire game.
I love/hate EVERYTHING about the room in the prison/historical society where you find Angela and fight the Abstract Daddy. Right down to that Lester name. Everything about that room’s design is SO AWFUL and from Angela’s breakdown, you can just look around and they don’t need to state anything else outright. You know EXACTLY what Angela went through.
The long staircase leading down to the prison underneath the historical society. And how you keep descending down and down and down jumping through additional holes. And yet, when you leave after killing Eddie…you just walk out a door and suddenly, you’re just…outside. Impossible spaces that cannot exist, my beloved :D
“Trick or Treat.” Furthermore, MARIA’S REACTION to Trick or Treat. “What was THAT?”
The scene where James finds Maria alive and acting very much not like Maria at all. FANTASTIC voice work by Monica Horgan. (Especially how petulant/almost angry she sounds when saying “I’m not your Mary”).
That one prison cell where it fakes you out momentarily, thinking you’re stuck there forever now. And then a few scones later, you can open the door no problem.
Lightbulbs in a can. It’s stupid, but I love it. XD
The last scene with Angela. The music that plays, the dialogue, the setting, her last line…it’s all so damn heartbreaking.
James’ “I was weak. That’s why I needed you. Needed someone to punish me for my sins.” And how while it’s clearly meant for Pyramid Head, everything he says can also just as easily apply to the just-killed-again Maria.
While the “Maria” ending isn’t my favorite, the delivery on “You’d better do something about that cough” is CHILLING. Like, OH NO. It’s all going to happen again.
In the “In Water” ending, the way the car revs up and revs up and gets louder and louder and faster and faster until that sudden silence. Like…you don’t need to see what James just did, but you exactly what James just did, just from that sound design.
There’s more I could mention, but I’ll leave it off here. If your list is anything to go by, there’s just so much about this game to love and appreciate. And the attention to detail is staggering.

9:03 Here's an actual fact about those face animations, they were done BY HAND. Takayoshi Sato states in the Making of SH2 that he couldn't rely on motion capture for face expressions, it just wasn't accurate enough for him. So he animated them himself in the FMVs.

  • @spuuunit

    26. It was actually Eddie's voice actor who made the throwing up sounds, with a glass of water.
    28. The whisper is actually just a generic "sound effect" from a sound pack. It was discovered in 2015.
    90. I always interpreted Lakeview Hotel burned down was Angela's version of Silent Hill bleeding into James's. Since they're near each other (as before). "You see it to? For me it's always like this". The painting "Burning Man" referring to Angela burning down her house and father after stabbing her father to death (stabbing confirmed by article in game). Right beside is another painting "Woman In Flight", Angela's wish to fly away.

The very last line of the game is always the most heartbreaking to me and the actress' reading of it is perfect. They were truly happy together, but through no fault of either of them, their relationship was sent on a path to come to a grueling, messy, violent end where they both turned into the worst versions of themselves. It really makes you wonder how well you could handle a situation like that or what levels of despair a slow tragedy like a terminal illness could send you to.

The whispering in 209 was found to be an obscure random whisper track from an effects CD, it actually says and means nothing other than to freak you out. Another thing is that even if you reload the game, it can only happen once in a playthrough (supposedly) edit: also, the "Ritual" thing is actually the monster saying sped up something about Mary's death, I have no idea anymore and once again, I just heard this

one thing I do love is how distorted James face is on his save screen and how red the screen gets, I like to think the color choice represents what he had done prior to being in silent hill, and then Marias save screen is clean and normal and having that violate color which just shows more on how Maria is just James subconscious manifested in Silent Hill.

  • @kentalacrucia
    @kentalacrucia Год назад +13

I want to say that either Masahiro Ito or Hiroyuki Owaku said that James is not looking at the camera in the opening bathroom scene. It's an unintentional camera perspective. James is staring into his own eyes but the mirror/camera reflection looks like his eyes are pointing towards us.

I haven’t seen anyone mention this or any videos on it but the Maria section of the game that you play. She can’t die. I literally let her stand there (cause I wanted to get back to the main menu screen) and get attacked by the enemies, the health goes down but she never dies. Shows that she’s not real & just a manifestation from James created by Silent Hill. Damn, have to love the details in this game.

Something cool about silent hill puzzle seeds, is how it was figured out many years later, and not by a streamer but a random viewer that was popping into SH2 speedrunning livestreams and just saying the codes. It was some big news in the community at the time.

I always liked how the 2nd pyramid head at the end represented James' inner guilt for killing Eddie. That means that Eddie's death impacted James a lot more than we thought. This proves that James wasn't a bad person and he really regretted killing Eddie, even though it was self-defense. I were James, I'd be thinking "if only I hadn't said what I said, Eddie wouldn't have attacked me and he'd still be alive"

Walter being in SH2 and then the main villain of SH4 technically wasn’t planned. Development of SH4 started around the same time SH3 did, and the team really liked his name so they decided to reincorporate that person into the main plot of 4.

In regards to the creature that we don't see behind cell bars in the prison area, the one that constantly says "ritual", my theory on that is that it ties to the ritual ending in which James attempts to bring Mary back to life through a ritual and, in fact, that very same creature behind bars happens to be James in an alternate timeline in which he does go to prison for what he did, and wishes that he could somehow bring Mary back to life.

If I had to add one thing I loved it’d be that if you go back to where you kill the first monster and get the radio later on in the game some police crime scene tape has been put up since. A much more subtle version of the whole “Monsters? They looked like monsters to you?” line from SH3

What I love about this game is how characters could represent how James felt when he killed marry he tries to avoid his guilt but deep down he knew his actions would bite him later on, Angela could be his innocent side because he tends to hide the fact that he killed his burden wife but tries to cover it up by saying she died from her illness where as Eddie could be his guilty side, he knew he killed her he just didn't wanna show because the shame and guilt would be unbearable but until the two pyramid heads show up that's when James realized there weren't any excuses and took it apon himself to realize that he's at fault and as a silent hill fan I never actually knew this game could effect you emotionally

Thing I love the most about silent hill 2…the way that I feel drawn to play it every couple of years, love the opening cut scene but then realise how old it feels. The footstep sound effects old graphics and dodgy voice acting. But before I even realise it, I’m fully absorbed once again. SH could’ve gone the route almost every other game did and put her in a physics defying bond age outfit, but nope. It looks like she had a $50 budget to spend at the local outlet mall. It’s 100% what someone like Mary would put together if she was trying to look particularly hot. It’s so subtle and it’s so perfect.

Absolutely love this game. It achieves something unidentifiable for me, something in the feels that's hard to explain. I love the subtle themes around trauma and mental health, ethics and morality. We just don't get games like this anymore, although perhaps we never did as SH2 is the only game that's connected with me (and so many others) in such a profound way. I'd love to get a proper remake of this game in particular (the first 4 games would be awesome if done correctly....unlike the insulting HD bundle they released on the 360 generation of consoles), and hopefully a well done reboot to the series. Thanks for making this video, I always love hearing peoples' perspectives and experiences with this game. I still play through SH2 (on PS2) at least once every couple of years and I'm never disappointed. It still blows me away even after years playing my ps4. Take care everyone.

One of my all time favorite games. And thanks to this video I have another reason to go and replay it. I had always wondered what the staticky radio message at the beginning was, and after hearing what it said in this video I was genuinely freaked out.

One of my favourite things, is tying into the whole is Maria real or not, thing is in a later game, (I wanna say 3, but don’t quote me.) there’s another advertisement for Heaven’s Night that advertises Maria. She looks nothing like Maria in this game. The town took a person who really existed, or just her name, and made her into an ersatz Mary to torment James and make him realise what he did.

It's one of the best games. I'll play it killing everything, I'll play it killing only what I have to to progress, I'll play it only melee, I'll play it only firearms. Love love love this game. 1 is good, 3 is great, but 2...2 is something so so special.

Actually, the whispering was debunked by a fan. Sadly, it's just an audio taken of the internet. Kind of destroys all the theories, but it's cool nonetheless.
Love this video aswell. Just discovered your channel and it's great :)
