  • Clock Tower is a highly influential, often forgotten horror franchise that has seen incredible highs and lows. Today I want to discuss how the franchise came to be, everything it did right (as well as everything it did wrong), and its impact on the horror genre as a whole.

      Exactly; if anything, retro graphics like in SNES Clock Tower have come back into style in recent years! Yes, neither CT2 nor Ghost Head have aged very nicely, but Ghost Head in particular looked bad even for the time it came out. On top of being a weak game, oof!

    • @88Factor
      @88Factor 11 месяцев назад +14

      @@tangomushi I mean, there is now a retro 3D movement, judging by all those indie horror games trying to emulate the PS1 era. It suggests that early 3D has something that can be done with it, but it often requires a specific kind of stylization.

      @@88Factor Silent Hill 1/2-era 3D graphics do work exceptionally well for horror, I admit. Because the monsters look so... not necessarily bad, but yeah... "low fidelity" your imagination fills in the blanks. The monsters looking like weird inhuman blobs definitely added to the horror! Once you move on trying to make actual human beings though (like Clocktower 2 does) it does look just awful though, IMO.

      @@matty6878eah, I feel like part of the issue for CT3 is the disconnect between these really visually inventive and energetic motion capture sequences juxtaposed against the dialogue.
      I do kind of feel like (putting aside the magical girl stuff) it was almost directed as a silent film project, playing to the strengths of the limitations of motion capture and being appropriate for the era the game takes place in, which was then dubbed over.
      Someone should have a go at editing the cutscenes to remove most of the dialogue and place pertinent information on insert cards and see what happens. I imagine that it might be possible to make something really interesting, especially if they were filtered visually to give them that old-fashioned look.
      Obviously, the technology of the time probably couldn't do anything that wild with the camera movement but it's kind of like there were several creative visions butting up against each other that weren't compatible.
      That being said, it's a beautiful mess and I'm happy with the way they did it, even if it's not traditionally 'good' and derives a lot of its appeal from just how camp and bizarre it is.

  • @ExValeFor
    @ExValeFor Год назад +789

    I think the bizarre Jennifer/Nolan relationship is not even a product of the devs being creepy, but more the trend of making so many protagonists teens for no conceivable reason. It's less of a thing nowadays, at least in games, but it used to be extremely common for characters to be ridiculously young yet never look or act their age. The creators just forget that it's written somewhere they aren't 20+, since they never act like actual teens. Or, well, yeah, it may just be ridiculously questionable writing, can't deny that

    • @SpookyDollhouse
      @SpookyDollhouse Год назад +147

      Something else you can't forget is the first two games draw heavily from 70s Italian horror movies, with many things pulled straight out of Argento's movie Phenomena. Weird teen girls and studious 20-something-year-old men "relationship" stuff is not a focus of the film but it's straight out of one of those movies tbh. I'm pretty sure that's what they were going for because even then it wasn't a "thing" to just make a plot line like that. (so what I'm saying is yes it's weird and they knew it was weird and there you go)

      @@Komix777 That is and isn't true. The so-called national sex age of consent law is 13, but the Child Welfare Act (and individual prefecture laws among others) prohibit sex with minors. It varies across the country between ages 16/18 much like the USA. These days the original law is only really invoked to cover high schoolers so they don't get in trouble with the law if they're caught fooling around. (tho even then there's legal limits within range!) So why was the original law 13 in the first place? It was passed many years ago when the major age of life expectancy was 50. It never left the books, hence other laws rightfully taking its place. As for the video game which features a brutal murderer inspired by Italian horror films, it's obvious everything in the game is supposed to be fucked-up as a virtue of what inspired it. The more you know!

    I'm loving your videos, in binging them right now, they're so well researched. As a kid growing in Mexico, Ghosthead ,with RE, was my introduction to horror in games. I watched my older sister play, no one knew what was happening (we didn't speak English) and we never saw what was after that first scenario. With all those factors in mind, that game terrified me as a kid. I like this franchise a lot and has great music.

    Fantastic video, thanks for making it! Clock Tower on the SNES (via fan translation) was the first proper horror game I ever played and I always wanted to check out the rest of the series. I had no idea Ghost Head was such a stinker, but CT3 looks like an absolute delight.

    Clock Tower 3 is wild. It's in that category of games that could only ever have existed on the PS2. I don't know if I'd ever replay it when I could just play Haunting Ground, though.

Have you seen how Alyssa has new outfits when you finish it? Overall, It’s super cool to see how the franchise has changed since it started. Cheers for making this video! I feel that Clock Tower deserves more attention for the good it brought, especially the first game. It truly is rather obscure, as I didn’t hear about it until last year when SNESDrunk mentioned it. Thanks to Clock Tower Deluxe, I was able to enjoy it this year, and it certainly delivered with fantastic atmosphere, music, and buildup.

    OMG someone batting for the defense of Clocktower 3's vibes is a breath of fresh air!
    I think one of the strengths of the original is leaning on on a super-stylized, Dario Argento kind of aesthetic for the game. While CT3 doesn't literally do that, I love its commitment to having its own over-the-top style. I think after CT2 and Ghost Head, it was really important for have a voice beyond a generic "survival horror video game" kind of vibe. While not scary like CT1, it keeps the same gonzo "expect the unexpected" feeling that reminds me of the creativity the first game had.

    I didn't even know this same company who did the Clock Tower games also did that obscure Gilligan's Island game. Dad was a fan of the show and had me rent the game. It's kind of a strange game back when I played it as a kid and never knew Clock Tower and Gilligan's Island had a connection 'til now. And also...27:40 what?! Mojo Jojo's voice actor does Bates here AND he's behind the Ghost Face voice from Scream?! Wow.

    I'm so glad I am not the only one who struggled within the confines of Clock Tower: Ghost Head (see what I did there? ;) )
    I have reviewed all three Human Entertainment Clock Tower games on my channel, and by far Ghost Head was the worst of the bunch! I cannot even begin to tell you how frustrated the game made me, and not even sure how I managed to get through it (oh wait - I didn't. After getting a few of the endings, and having the samurai armour fall on me THAT FAR INTO THE GAME AND BEING A DEAD END, I gave up.) Anyway, if you want a laugh, the review I did of Ghost Head always makes me laugh when I revisit it.
    But this isn't about me - it's about how I am sad that I have gotten through all of your amazing content. I can't wait to see more stuff from you in the future!
