A minefield of the make-up world, contouring is something that can go badly wrong. This video is an introduction to the basic principles of shading and contouring the face with powder. Good contouring can make a wide face appear narrower and cheekbones appear more prominent. It can also help to define the jawline and lift the eyes. All this needs to be done with a light touch using the right product and shade, especially for a daytime look. Once you have mastered the very basic techniques shown here you can build up your skills and really make the most of your bone structure and the shape of your face.

I can’t guarantee that all of the make-up and skincare products I recommend will suit you. I only use products I personally think are good having tried them on myself and my clients but everyone's skin is different and it's possible to be allergic to anything. Wherever possible, test products out on yourself before purchasing.
I only feature products I like, or want to try. The products I use in these videos are either purchased by me or sent to me by make-up companies to use in my professional capacity as a make-up artist for fashion and celebrity photo shoots, red carpet etc. I am also sent products by many of the top magazines to judge for awards.
I do not accept payment and am not sponsored to make any of the films on this channel. Some of the links under the videos and blog posts on my site are affiliated however and as stated before, I only feature products I like, or want to try. Хобби
The best tutorial on RUclips for contouring and there are hundreds. So subtle, natural and classy. Just how I'd like it.
Every youtube "guru" needs to watch Lisa ! and especially this video !
yessss so true 👍👍

I agree. I don't care for make-up channels except this one

5 years later and this is still a much better contouring how-to technique compare t most overdone videos on contouring nowadays. I have warm undertones but I prefer cool toned shades to contour with bc they look more natural and the closet to the color of the natural shadows of our faces. Haven't been able to find the perfect one yet bc any palette that has the right shade also comes with loads of other shades that I'll probably never use and I hate buying something that I can't get full use of. I'm using single eyeshadow or brow powders to contour right now, obviously the pan is quite small for a contouring brush to dip into, but it's working for me atm
you could always use a neutral color!
If you prefer more subtle and natural contouring you can try regular pressed powder that's a few shades darker than your own. Even drugstore ones will do, but you'll have to swatch around to find which brands make cooler toned powders, the great thing is many of the cheaper powders do tend to run more neutral or cool, shouldn't be hard to find something to suit you. Plus pressed powder makes it easier to blend and there's a much lower chance of overdoing it the way many make-up enthusiasts do these days. Anyways, that's what I do. I don't bother with contouring or sculpting powders at all, they are just matte brown powders at the end of the day. Contouring with brow or eyeshadow powders the way you do works just as well, just needs more blending because they are so dark, I've tried it though and it looks quite natural as long as I take the time to really blend it all out.
Try the Kevyn Aucoin Sculpting Contour powder. I am warm toned too and used bronzer as contour for years, back when bronzing and contouring were essentially the same processes. The first time I tried that sculpting powder, I almost wouldn't leave the bathroom because I was so accustomed to warmer tones that I felt like I had just blended gray dirt into my face. But I was in a hurry so I left for work anyway and upon seeing myself in the mirror throughout the day was amazed at how natural and utterly convincing my contour was. The shade was cool toned just enough so as not to look _like makeup_ at all, but instead like real shadows on my face.
Know what I love about this contour tutorial as opposed to the average one you'd find here on RUclips? She hasn't got that extremely dark cream contour colour applied all over her face like war paint, unlike a lot of other demonstration videos. I think what people neglect is that those contour guide photos are only meant to emphasise the locations where the contour colour should go, but unfortunately a lot of folks take it quite literally.
This video is 6 years old. Can I just say that Lisa hasn't aged a day since? she still looks exactly the same.
Revisiting all your old videos. They are a must watch!
YES !!!!! Now I know to powder first before !!!. No wonder my blush had dark blotches no matter how much I swirled it in. Thank you. It only took me 50 years to learn this. 😔
this is so much better than the dragging contour trend at the moment.
watching this in 2017 and still,it is THE BEST. Like a good book or a good movie. Lisa is phenomenal.
Please do a video on cream contouring! As a makeup artist I identify myself with your work and how we see beauty . I'm on a mission to educate this generation that less is more. This whole Instagram trend is not what beauty is about . LOVE YOU LISA!
You go girl 😊
I find both methods beautiful. I far prefer the more natural approach. I think of the Instagram trend style of makeup as more for fun and dramatic effect than a daily makeup look. On myself the deeper looks are quite jarring to me but everyone else loves them lol. I feel like it not fooling anyone; I'm nearly 40 and that style of makeup is far more suited to the twenty somethings of the world. I still love how it looks on the young girls but when I see someone my age wearing it I think it's almost childish looking.
I laughed so hard at the snickers bar comment. Lol!! I see so much of that, especially on instagram. Lord, please fix it!
That was me before watching this video! Haha... So glad I've learned how to do it properly :')
@aliz1973 Yes I have added a full list of the products used with links onto my website underneath the videos. Really pleased to hear its proving useful. Thanks for getting in touch x
@bebedenenes blusher would go over the contour slightly higher up. You could just do the 'apples' of the cheeks if you want a natural effect but there are other ways too....think I need to do a blusher video soon : ) Thanks for watching x
you are the best makeupartist on youtube! Thanks!
Lovely Lisa, could you do a contouring video for those of us with very round, chubby faces? I think it's a bit more of a challenge & I for one could use some help with it. Thanks! xo
Maybe you want to check out "aly Art" on youtube. She just did a whole contouring series
Thanks so much for your great videos. You explain the steps so well. I really enjoy watching your videos. Have a sunny day and lots of love from Germany.
It's crazy how much I learn watching your videos, they're amazing!
I just watched your latest videos then i watched this one, your face DOESNT CHANGE. ITS CRAZYYYYY 5 years and counting omggg love you!
I just want to thank you from the bottoms of my heart. I've been struggling with getting my contour right. Watched this video yesterday and today I tried doing my contour again and I SLAYED it 😍😍😍
@imprezanic0le can you get Physicians Formula in your country? They are big in the States but not here in the UK....they have some good matte bronzers and contouring powders worth checking out. The Boots No7 matt sculpting bronzer comes out in May too. Apart from that most drug store products are really shimmery/glittery unfortunately : (
After watching tons of contouring tutorials, this video is by far the best and most helpful!
Best contour video I think I've seen so far. It's amazing the subtle but definitely there change contouring can do. I was jumping from your face at the beginning and at the end and it's incredible that you can improve even without make up on. Thanks for this video, Lisa!
I love your videos! Each one is so easy to follow and simple in a great way. Thank you!
I've seen numerous videos on how to contour and never grasp how to do it, but wow with your tip on looking straight helps A LOT! I had not heard that in any video before. Thank you!
The absolute best contour video on RUclips!!!
"I don't want to look like a skeleton," LOL ♥
Your Tutorials are EASILY the best. So appreciative. Thankyou!!
Lisa, I'm completly your fan! As you say in England, your channel is just lovely.
@shahaarti yes its a good idea to add blush on the apples of the cheeks afterwards x
You are literally my favorite you tuber ever! your videos are so amazing and beautiful!
Great video. Your channel is always my go-to for makeup tutorials. You are such a lady and by far the best in your trade. I am so glad you are on You Tube still.
began when she js have any t BBB gshnsbbdhs hr rep or wwsdrrrddssdf
Thanks Lisa, I recommended this video to a customer of mine. Your videos are always, clear, concise and great to watch :)
I can watch your videos all day!
Hi Lisa, I just started watching some of your videos and I simply can't believe I've never seen any of your videos until a couple days ago! Your videos are so clear and informative - this is the first and probably only contouring video I completely understand and learned a bunch of new techniques and the reasons behind them. A lot people usually go "so take something to contour with and just contour" which really isn't that helpful. Thank you so much for the great videos!
This video is awesome! Most makeup artists on here put at least 3-4 layers of thick, liquid foundation and highlighters all over their face...which is fine for let's say...a photo shoot...but for not for everyday makeup. :) I like her tutorials a lot :D
the one and only useful contouring video, and i watched about 1000.... you really helped me!!! thank you!!!
what a gorgeous look lisa! thank you so much for making these videos they really do help!
Brilliant brilliant brilliant. I need more contouring. So inspiring. I need to memorise this video. Thank you so much.
thank you so much, your videos are always top notch and i always learn something new; please keep doing them.
love the contouring, it looks really nice.
So foundation, powder and then the contouring! Got it :) thanks Lisa
I always highlight AND contour, since the effect comes from the play between the two. This is a great tutorial. Thanks, Lisa.
I'm so glad I came across your videos! This was easily your most helpful video for me :) Thanks for doing all these x
Sleek do an amazing contouring kit from shades light to dark . Much more pocket friendly, compared to mac products
Amazing as always Lisa
Lisa, you are a wonderful teacher 🌹 !!
of all the makeup gurus who've contoured their faces, i think this is the best by far :)
I really liked this tutorial, natural is always best! xx
i wish i had seen this video before, i learned contouring from other youtubr gurus and did contouring just like them and always would end up with two patches... i am just realising now how horriblr that used to look :(
thanks Lisa! this tutorial is great and simple at the same time!
Lisa, you inspire me so much!! thank you!!
this is amazing! thank you for such an in depth tutorial!
Another great tutorial from you, loved your advice on the choice of shades :) x
always love to watch your videos!!!
very educational~~~
You are an amazing teacher. Please keep making more tutorials.
Thank you!! It is so refreshing to see a makeup artist address contouring on a long, thin face. I was 'blessed' with a thin face that tends to look extremely long when blush and bronzer is placed incorrectly. I would love seeing tutorial that goes more indepth when it comes to makeup for long, thin faced women. As I age I've noticed that my cheeks are losing their plumpness making my face seem even longer and the makeup application that I used in my mid to late 20's is nolonger working.
thank you for all of your amazing insight! have a wonderful day!
Thanks Lisa, tons of good info in this video.
I've just discovered your channel and I think you're amazing and so professionnal.
I can't wait for more videos, thank you very much for sharing your tips xx
@heiheij the contour needs to shade so it has to be a little deeper than the bronzer colour you choose. Like in the vid when I had 2 shades....I could have used the lighter to bronze and the slightly deeper one to contour.....hope that makes sense : )
Thank you for the video, Lisa! Excellent tutorial!
Another wonderful tutorial! Thanks for sharing
this looks beautiful
Beautiful. Thank you for your amazing expertise!
Hello, I absolutely love your videos. You are my favorite! I have a very similar skin tone as yours, should I purchase the shade Lightsweep from the Mac Pro Sculpting Powder? Thank you!!!!!
Very useful - I think its so easy for people to co overboard with contouring. Loved the "snickers bar" descriptions lol.
Brilliant work
You're a sweet and talented teacher! I adore your vids
Love this! You are gorgeous miss!! Def subscribing
Thank you this is so different to canmake shading powder instructions at the back. Or it isn't?
i love that you made a comment on the glitter. I recently bought something to highlight with and it was so shiny and glittery i could not even go out in public with it.
lisa elridge you're invaluable!
you really are an artist!!!!!! your videos are great and you are very beautiful and talented!!!!
I watched this video on your great site. thanks for the links to specific products
Thank you for sharing this!!!
What cream product would or could you recommend?
can't wait for the highlighter tutorial :)
Brilliant video , really helpful x
Love it!!
Simply perfect! thank you
Hi Lisa! Fabulous video! Loving all of your videos!! Quick question--do you remember which brush you used for the nose contour? Thanks so much,
~Elaine~
This is awesome!! I def need to rethink my contoring techinques... =D
Thank you for this video.
Beautiful and natural, Lisa. I've seen women with the "snickers bar" line on their face and it looks like war paint. Lol I read that when choosing a contour to make sure it has a gray undertone in it to give off a natural shading effect. Is this true? I use Benefits Hoola with a very light hand and always make sure it's blended well. You're the best makeup artist I've seen here. I look forward to a long relationship with you so I can apply my makeup like a pro. Thankyou. xx
I love ! 😍😍😍
A fantastic step by step guide yet again, so clear and informative. My problem with contouring cheekbones is I have a small angular face with quite strong cheekbone structure; contouring makes me look very gaunt and is I find quite ageing on me. Love the way you contour eyes though; have tried this technique and haven't quite got the colour right yet but will perservere...makes such a difference to hooded mature eyes! Thank you for your guidance. Do you have any ideas for cream products??

First off I love your videos they're amazing!
Can you use it over a matt finish foundation or do you really need to do power over power? Also, how would this change when you're going out at night?
How do you do the contouring on eyelids that are a bit more hooded? I love the dark shadow on the outer corners but can't figure out how to make it work for me. Love your videos!
awesome tutorial, thanks a lot!
Oh My God! you are so pretty with just the minimal Contouring! Flawless natural beauty. ;-) Thanks so much for your sharing your knowledge with us.
Those r the best tips EVER. : )
"you don't want the two snickers bars" LOL that cracked me up
Thanks for this tutorial, can I ask if you would also go on to add a powder blusher for the daytime look, or at night time?. My skin tends towards oiliness so I usually use an oil free liquid foundation with oil free powder to set it, but it can look a bit flat, so this is really usefull. Thanks again.
beautiful!!!
Great video! 😘😘
What lipstick are you wearing in this contour video? I love it!
Great contouring video for daytime thank u!!
you really informative. what shade of contour do u use from mac?
Amazing how time flies.
Thanks Lisa !!!!
Wonderful vid. I'd love a highlighting one too. I'm starting to get expression lines around the corners of my mouth and would love to learn how to proper conceal them.
