Honestly, Stand-On 623x is the most DIO move imaginable in the context of DIO as a character. Yes, he's begging you to try something - the man thinks he's (fucking) invincible.
Yeah, it's a flavor success; it's unfortunately also a function failure. I wonder if it would have been salvagable if it was some weird projectile-counter hybrid, like a warped version of Shadow DIO's counter.
The funniest thing about DIO is his Jotaro match-up, which feels really lore accurate (probably by accident). Jotaro and DIO kinda occupy the same archetype of character, wanting to get in your face for big damage combos (even Star Finger oki and DIO's Blazing Fists oki is the same idea in practice). However, Jotaro has buttons that are extremely fast and can stuff DIO's approaches, meaning that DIO has to play really cautiously and try to lame him out with knives or whiff punish him, and even then there's a chance Jotaro could jumpscare you with Star Breaker. Even if you are playing well, Jotaro could pop your skull open and win. I feel like that's close to how the fight between them plays out in the actual manga. Also it's not just the character portrait that has DIO in his jacket, it's literally every single image of DIO besides his actual in-game sprite. His new challenger portrait, character select manga panel, Stand Tandem portrait, Vs screen portrait, face portrait in the corner in-game (you can tell by the hair and just barely seeing his headband) and even the title screen all have Jacket DIO. It's literally everything _except_ the actual DIO you get to play as (without modding). This probably happened because High DIO appears for about three chapters in the manga, and since HFTF draws its sprites directly over the manga panels, most of the available references are Jacket DIO. I'm pretty sure the only other time High DIO's design is used is in Midler's ending, where he drains her blood (which uses the panel him draining Joseph's blood for reference).
They do this matchup shenanigan in every game. Both versions of ASB got this quirkiness going on and can make DIO's 3 bar super unusable because the opponent picked Jotaro.
Lore wise DIO is way more powerful than Jotaro, he has the ego to seek more power in whatever form it takes, Jotaro also has ego but he restrains it and requires other people to bring out the best in him. DIO underestimated Jotaro because Jotaro only brings out his full power when absolutely necessary, and if DIO didn't have The World then Star Platinum probably would've never figured out it could stop time. Edit: Shadow DIO seems to be what you're describing, where SDIO and Jotaro are both aggressive brawlers but Jotaro is stronger so SDIO has to use knives and passive stand specials to gain the upper hand.
Shadow Dio’s existence is funny to me because it’s just Dio from the panels before he reached full power. That said, it’s pretty sick how he manages to be a fully realized character that feels deliberately incomplete, relating to the manga.
I’ll always find it interesting that the jacketless/final fight Dio is the playable one on the roster, given that the jacket look is more iconic. I would’ve expected a Shin Akuma situation, where the jacketless version is a souped up boss-only character. Either way, it’s a good look. Love how well they adapted him for the game.

At least not any good ones, so the old "QCF" "HCB" sort of thing is what I grew up with. Adjusting to numpad notation has proven to be a little tricky for my old man brain.

I got into HFTF around 2020. Since day 1 I knew I wanted to main DIO. It probably took me over 50 hours of grinding with training mode lua scripts just to get the bnb down consistently, but once I got it man did it feel so good. I got to B rank with him and I was happy with that. I have not played a good session of HFTF in probably over 2 years, but I know if I pick up DIO right now I can still pull off that bnb. You never forget.
10:55 S623x only has 2 legitimate utilities but they're so situational that you will most likely never get to use them, but first one is: If you're meterless and your cancel-able stand on normal gets whiffed because of the opponent's tandem I-frames abuse, you can immediately cancel your normal to S623x to avoid a stand crash combo, and the only damage you will take is 2-3 since tandem damage scaling is very low 2nd, you can use S623x to meaty a few character with middle-volume wakeup speed (S5a > S5b > S6C xx S623x) though since it's slow it will always get blocked unless they're mashing Oh, and also, Stand on Bloody Summoning's pre-super flash I-frames are still present even after time stop, so you can use it as quick escape tool if you're caught off guard by a surprise time stop and don't have time for 214AA escape or 1f 623x
I really appreciate how well you break down these characters for someone who hasn’t played, even giving some bnbs and tech tips! Because these videos have made me really interested in looking for more heritage content to see how to get into the game or who I think I’d like playing.
Fun fact for the FGC community who might not be familiar with the source material: DIO is also a lawyer, in case you needed any more convincing he's evil as heck
Given how "infamous" DIO's throw is for its badness, I have to wonder how much better he would be if it simply was always +0 on hit. I wonder the same for Hol Horse too of course.
numpad notation is what made motion inputs finally make sense to me. i got into fighting games with sfv, and struggled to consistently get exactly what input i wanted until GGST when i looked at dustloop and saw the numbers. after reading an explanation, i realized that the game is looking specifically for where your input ends to determine what special move comes out. numpad notation is the way
I got into JoJo and fighting games around the same time, and after downloading fightcade, I thought I’d try out the JoJo fighting game I had heard nothing but praise for. I picked DIO. After a match, an ass-beating, and some advice, I spent the rest of the night in training mode, reading wikis, watching replays, and practicing moves. Such a fun, complex character.
the move where he sends the world out is more referencing the fact he appeared and punched hierophant green from the car, despite the distance being over 2 meters
honestly, I always found it weird how Jacket DIO is the unplayable and the "High" version that would be the superboss in any other game is the playable one
So what I hear is that regular DIO plays like Ash Crimson with the absurdly long, highly technical combos, while Shadow DIO plays like Iori Yagami, fake crossup and super high damage, easy combos.
Let's not forget shadow Dio's super is actually cheaper than jot's or Dio's. You only need 2 bars to use it and 1 bar to unstop yourself from the other player's time stop.
some things that I noticed were missing from the sdio segment were that knives are + on block, 663c is cancelable into 5s which makes it a good engage tool, and you can hold down 623aa to fly across the map
Let's be honest, a good chunk of the fanbase got into JoJo thanks to that one flash animation of the roadroller. Thank you for getting me into the series, DIO-sama.
I've watched a lot of your videos, somehow figured out myself what numbers meant as a directions and now, after all guides on characters of JoJo you start video with a notepad tutorial. Well, I hope it means more subscribers and wider audience
I think Shadow Dio knife special was inspiration for Ciel in Melty Blood. She also can use various follow ups when she throws knifes. And it was totally inspiration for one the character for indie fighting game Hinokakero - Silvis, guy who loves to toss various form of knifes who also have iconic circle of knifes as his ultimate.
Hey I don't know if you can but could you start making videos of the arcade game Fist of the North Star (I think it's also on PS2) I've seen some videos and it looks quite interesting with some mechanics I would appreciate it if you could read this lol
You can play jacket DIO. In the arcade version the only problem is you have to know the code to do it and he's not a finished character. From what I heard he does function a little differently as well... With what's currently playable without mods and all that stuff. Heck Death 13 is playable as well you just need to mess with the Dip switches to make him useable.Hes not banned either but you need to agree with players to set him up.
i'm a big JJBA fan but barely knew this game's existence until one of your videos came up on my recommended, and wow you make great videos. i'm loving learning about this game and would enjoying seeing these kind of videos on other fighting games too. keep up the good work :)
I remember the first time i got interested in fighting game was watching Joel Vinesauce play JoJo HFTF, and when he plays Dio I was hyped because he make Dio look so fun to play.
Ive seen some mugen variations of JJBA which includes variations of Dio like his Heaven Ascension state. There he feels like a proper boss character with things that make him much more annoying like a bit of passive health regeneration, a instant time stop, and a super that basically refills all his health. Also his AI is much better in heaven ascension mode, Im not sure if the AI includes input reading too.
Aw man I forgot how sick the movement is in this game. The training footage of just doing dash 5As is making me wanna hop back on this game at some point lol
i want to play HFF so badly, but i can't because i can't get fightcade to work. The controller i use is a switch controller, which i think is the issue, but i'm not going to buy controllers for a console i don't own

DIO (as opposed to Dio Brando, since both are in ASB lmao) has a lot of differences compared to Heritage. Most important is that his base costume is the one with the coat and not his final form after sucking Joseph's blood, which I imagine is a plus for you. In all seriousness though, there are some neat comparisons between both DIOs To start, ASBR DIO can throw knives normally outside of using a super a back to forward input, and it's relatively fast since he doesn't do the fuck off throw he normally does. He can also perform knive throws during time stop, and his basic super involves throwing knives too, but in a cinematic (also one of the best HHA's visually speaking) The punch he has is there too, and it sends the opponent flying across the screen. A unique attribute being that it can become unblockable if charged, which is made better in ASBR because he has assists (ironically enough, Jotaro is one the better assists for said unblockable setups lmao) ASBR DIO lacks a true teleport (which ironically, Part 4 Jotaro does have), but he has a counter that functions similarly to Shadow Dio's counter, in that it works with basically anything that isn't a super iirc. The downside is that unlike Heritage, DIO will automatically attack after teleporting, and this teleport can be Stylish Guarded (ASBR's system of perfect parry), or just blocked, making it situational. Also noteworthy is that he has a way to escape blockstrings and avoid damage at the cost of 2 bars. Punch rush is about what you expect, being the typical MUDA MUDA MUDA that you've come to expect. This is however in Stand On. He has a different move in Stand Off where DIO summons the World to hit the opponent after a time stop. This can be used as a combo starter or ender, the latter being used in time stop combos. He happens to have an air MUDA in Stand On, but rather than the forward moving one he has in Heritage, is a downward punch rush that ends with him launching the opponent with a kick. This can be Stand Rushed (a form of special cancel certain Stand Users have) that lets DIO attack while the World attacks, as well go for different combo routes. His command grab as Shadow Dio returns and has a unique property of giving him health back, and meter if he uses it on a Joestar (excluding Johnny and Gappy), even doing the thing of drilling his finger into his skull afterwards. His GHA, as you would expect, is Road Roller, does what you'd expect. A neat little thing that can happen when using it, which you may have seen already given how cool it is, is that Jotaro can time stop during it and escape the final hit, letting him survive should the super kill. Time Stop is also here, and while there are more setups thanks to assists, one downside is that doing timestop (on any character that has it) without full meter will significantly slow down the animation. This was a nerf from the original ASB, where the animation stays the same regardless. Some other noteworthy things is that although listed as a Stand User, DIO takes increased damage from Hamon attacks and Stroheim's UV ray, which isn't helped since his HP is just barely above the lowest at 840 (800 is the lowest, 1000 is the average). No Shadow Dio either, since that's just a costume alongside final DIO. One thing that does suck about Heritage DIO imo is that he lacks the funniest and ironically useful part of ASBR DIO's kit. STOP SIGN. It's a stand off command normal that hits OTG, can be stand rushed into Stand Off, be used to get more damage in during Stand Rush "My Stand's Full Power" (downward Muda), and can even be canceled into his counter to get further OTG. Truly funny how good a move it is, considering how it failed to kill Jotaro in Part 3 lmao. I know it's probably a little random to talk about an entirely different fighting game underneath a video about another game, but I do find it interesting comparing how Capcom and CyberConnect2 handled having to make Jojo Fighting games, and the differences/similarities they both have. I do hope a day comes you touch on ASBR, since it isn't talked about much and doesn't have too big of a scene because Bandai sucks lol. Amazing video.
Some of his sprites were traced off of DIO’s, like S.Dio knife throw for hamva-ga throw Jotaro’s point and several guilty gear X2 sprites were also used

10:55 S623x only has 2 legitimate utilities but they're so situational that you will most likely never get to use them, but first one is: If you're meterless and your cancel-able stand on normal gets whiffed because of the opponent's tandem I-frames abuse, you can immediately cancel your normal to S623x to avoid a stand crash combo, and the only damage you will take is 2-3 since tandem damage scaling is very low
2nd, you can use S623x to meaty a few character with middle-volume wakeup speed (S5a > S5b > S6C xx S623x) though since it's slow it will always get blocked unless they're mashing
Oh, and also, Stand on Bloody Summoning's pre-super flash I-frames are still present even after time stop, so you can use it as quick escape tool if you're caught off guard by a surprise time stop and don't have time for 214AA escape or 1f 623x
The Fighting Game Community Community
@ brought to you by the people who made “smh my head”, “STD disease” and “TCG game”
CHAI TEA!?
It's pretty common knowledge that Dio roasted a dog in a furnace. Saying hehe haha lawyers are bad is kinda lame.
16:12 and so am i
Type 1 if you "LOL" after reading this AMAZING comment!
Given how "infamous" DIO's throw is for its badness, I have to wonder how much better he would be if it simply was always +0 on hit. I wonder the same for Hol Horse too of course.
THANK YOU for explaining numpad notation i can finally understand the inputs for these moves
numpad notation is what made motion inputs finally make sense to me. i got into fighting games with sfv, and struggled to consistently get exactly what input i wanted until GGST when i looked at dustloop and saw the numbers. after reading an explanation, i realized that the game is looking specifically for where your input ends to determine what special move comes out. numpad notation is the way
I got into JoJo and fighting games around the same time, and after downloading fightcade, I thought I’d try out the JoJo fighting game I had heard nothing but praise for.
0:19 poke on that thang
tu ah
I actually fell for the shadow dio cut lmao super informative video
OH SO THAT IS WHAT NUMPAD NOTATIONS ARE! THANK YOU!
“Grabbing the teleport is the best way to check it” yeah that’s great and all too bad some grabs are MINUS ON HIT

it's all fun and games till the jacket comes off
Excellent work. Hope to see you go over stuff for Jojo ASBR since there’s some great stuff in the roster to analyze.
I'm not good at 2D fighters and holy mackarels, it's so frustrating the amount of times I've used this goddamn move 10:55 by accident...
DIO being the hardest character to master makes sense considering he's a contender for one of the most skilled stand users in series
2:22 midlers stand def is so high because her teeth are supposedly harder than diamond
And we all know diamond is unbreakable
honestly, I always found it weird how Jacket DIO is the unplayable and the "High" version that would be the superboss in any other game is the playable one
I love how your videos feel like they came out of an earlier era of RUclips
some things that I noticed were missing from the sdio segment were that knives are + on block, 663c is cancelable into 5s which makes it a good engage tool, and you can hold down 623aa to fly across the map
Genuienly never understood what people were saying until you explained it. Because i barely play (especially on pc) fighting games
Let's be honest, a good chunk of the fanbase got into JoJo thanks to that one flash animation of the roadroller. Thank you for getting me into the series, DIO-sama.
I don't even play this game, but I've been enthralled since the start of the video.
Oh so this is where Valentine from Skullgirls got her knife and time stop supers lmao
Start palette represent! Gingers and black pants on top fr. And yes, Sdio is indeed not a rushdown charachter ❤️💯
Eye lasers?
It's Space Ripper Stingy Eyes, tvym.
LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
I've watched a lot of your videos, somehow figured out myself what numbers meant as a directions and now, after all guides on characters of JoJo you start video with a notepad tutorial. Well, I hope it means more subscribers and wider audience
These videos are therapy to me
When MrMixtape uploads 😃
Heck Death 13 is playable as well you just need to mess with the Dip switches to make him useable.Hes not banned either but you need to agree with players to set him up.
these videos are nice man its great to see peope making content for this game again sjnce the scene has been kinda dying for the past few years
keep making videos, you're the bomb
i'm a big JJBA fan but barely knew this game's existence until one of your videos came up on my recommended, and wow you make great videos. i'm loving learning about this game and would enjoying seeing these kind of videos on other fighting games too. keep up the good work :)
41 minutes of mrmixtape i am eating GOOD tonight
Red stone of aja can punish road roller, imagine
Aw man I forgot how sick the movement is in this game. The training footage of just doing dash 5As is making me wanna hop back on this game at some point lol
YEAAAH SHADOW DIO VIDEO!!!!
i want to play HFF so badly, but i can't because i can't get fightcade to work. The controller i use is a switch controller, which i think is the issue, but i'm not going to buy controllers for a console i don't own
get a cheap keyboard and call it a day
@trantrrus612 I can't play a fighting game on a keyboard...
@@ImInsideYourWalls
Fighting game players when hitbox: 🥵
Fighting game players when basically the exact same thing but you can change the button layout anytime you want for more comfort: 🤨👎
@thosemerc3113 I don't use a hit box either. I just want to use a regular controller
have you tried joy2key?
Every game needs an insanely technical character that gets less reward than the bunga top tiers
11:03 im not good at fighting games, but i recognize a bad move when i see it.
i used to play with my best friend on fightcade and he used jotaro, since the input is almost the same as the barrage but inverted, i made this move ALL the time on situations i didnt want to, and got punished everytime
when it happened on an incredibly tight match i started maining hol horse more
Fine, I'll play DIO terribly again.
16:11 he must've been if he did it with all those women
Me and my friends just started playing this game on fightcade. This game is so much fun.
Nice redemption arc on not calling the 214a link 1 frame
Damn, this reminds me of playing HFTF on my school Chromebook in the back of Social Studies
HNK Roah is also an uber popular end boss with a big execution floor.
DIO (as opposed to Dio Brando, since both are in ASB lmao) has a lot of differences compared to Heritage. Most important is that his base costume is the one with the coat and not his final form after sucking Joseph's blood, which I imagine is a plus for you. In all seriousness though, there are some neat comparisons between both DIOs
To start, ASBR DIO can throw knives normally outside of using a super a back to forward input, and it's relatively fast since he doesn't do the fuck off throw he normally does. He can also perform knive throws during time stop, and his basic super involves throwing knives too, but in a cinematic (also one of the best HHA's visually speaking)
The punch he has is there too, and it sends the opponent flying across the screen. A unique attribute being that it can become unblockable if charged, which is made better in ASBR because he has assists (ironically enough, Jotaro is one the better assists for said unblockable setups lmao)
ASBR DIO lacks a true teleport (which ironically, Part 4 Jotaro does have), but he has a counter that functions similarly to Shadow Dio's counter, in that it works with basically anything that isn't a super iirc.
Seeing all of dio's atacks remind me of ronald on mugen XD
Some of his sprites were traced off of DIO’s, like S.Dio knife throw for hamva-ga throw
Jotaro’s point and several guilty gear X2 sprites were also used
i like to call shadow dio proto dio
i know its version is unused and is only seen in storymode but jacket dio is... interesting
Hi I am a fan of your channel.
Aw man… I thought you were gonna cover Shadow Dio soon. he is a secret character that does appear out of nowhere in Jojo’s Venture.
