Dating a Malaysian vs Dating an American

  • In this video we talk about dating a Malaysian vs. dating an American. Logesh is a Malaysian that moved to America, where he met Rachel, an American. We had to learn all the differences that came with dating cross culturally. We give our perspective on what it's like to date a Malaysian vs. an American. Through our time dating we figured out a cultural middle ground for many of our differences (except for wearing shoes in the house...there is no middle ground, never wear shoes in the house).
Watch this video to see how having a Malaysian date an American can truly bring up some comical situations, and how both Logesh and Rachel have thoroughly enjoyed learning more about each others' cultures.

@@KumaarFamily we are living in Malaysia now. It was quite the culture shock. But now Malaysia is my home.
How about the small expressions like 'off the light' instead of 'turn off the light'. 😅
My husband's first breakfast, I told him my mom was making biscuits and gravy. He replied, 'I'll just have bread with my gravy'. Biscuit is entirely a different concept.

    Meeting - with jamuan
Driving - must be some jajan
Studying/working - foods are compulsory on the table
    Chatting - talk about food
When showing care to someone - dah makan? Makan apa?
Trying to break the ice with someone - kalau dapat ABC time panas ni sedap jugak
    8.00 am - hungry
    10.00 am - hungry

I am glad that we do not have many differences in using words and phrases because we both speak in British English ( I do learn some British/Mancunian slangs) and I lived in the UK for a while. My bf is not good in spicy food so I may need to put more effort to train him up XD At least he loves Malaysian food =P
BTW Yassss! Eating bad food will definitely ruin our whole day (the aftermath will also affect my working mood for the day too)!!! XP For us, only salt & pepper is too boring and plain af!

But the younger msian generation now speak mixed English and a lot of slang like American english as in Msia we have lots of American tv movies, entertainment, sitcoms, documentary influence. Just wondering - how do you address your in-laws? "Dad"? "Mom"?, or call them by their first name? Cos I have a friend married to an English; he'd address both his in-laws by their first names. For me (and I believe Asians too), I'd feel awkward and even disrespectful if I were to do that.
Conversely, how does Rachel address her in-laws? Sorry, don't mean to pry. Just curious about this particular cultural 'baggage'.

I'm asian, Filipino, but i think Food isn't a big deal for us when sharing it with people in different culture. If they don't like it, then we still appreciate them. But we do love our Food, and love eating / trying all sorts.

This food section explains so much why this Malaysian girl was surprised when I said I was eating Sichuan food like I couldn't handle spicy food as an American.

    British/Malaysian/Singaporean: "I need my spectacles."
Americans: "I need my reading glasses."
Note to self: Americans use spectacles for reading only.
