In this video I take a look at what just might be the most underused feature on the Helix, the built in mic preamplifier along with the Studio Tube Pre. I take a look at how it sounds when compared to much higher end mic preamplifiers and see if it can hold it's own. I really hope you enjoy the video.
As always, thanks so much for watching...

Thanks for this shootout! I regularly use the audio interface feature of my Helix LT for recording guitar. I love the LT but sometimes I do wish I had the Floor unit for the mic preamp.

I Find Helix Mic Preamp very good for vocal with my Neuman condenser mic, but after a bad manipulation I’ve destroyed the Preamp ( I forgot to turn of the Phantom power before unpluggin my mic!!! I did that several Times before on other Soundcards but this time my error had big big bad conséquence. Now I have to use an cheap ext Preamp in a return jack and will have to buy an expensive one for my vocals… quite fragile and no danger messages using Phanton power… thanks for your vidéos Jason and sorry for my English …

    Hi Jason.
Would you consider making a video on using headphones with the Helix?
Maybe covering: Headphone recommendations. Matching impedance withe the 12ohm Helix headphone output. How to achieve a balanced sound that will translate well to a live mix. etc.
Thanks for all the awesome content you make!

I got a headphone recommendation. Beyer DT 770 Pro. Easily the most comfortable headphones I've ever had.

Great video! In my band we use my Hx Stomp for guitar and vocals and the Mic preamp is a very good feature. One question, can i use a regular eq block with the Mic preamp? Would you suggest before or after it? I want vocals to stand a little because they're drowned in rehearsals. Thanks!

I use my helix for a mic preamp. I like the pre amp and the compressor it has.
I could use my fireface but I don't have any outboard gear for it and I like singing with the pre amp and compressor better.
Plus I can add a little reverb if I want.
I also use the helix for as my interface for some online guitar/singing stuff I do, makes it easy to get great sound and my room is quiet.

Do you think there is a difference in the performance of the audio interface feature between the stomp and full helix?

Good video 🤙🏽🤙🏽 … so if I told you where I use the Helix Mic Pre the most… you’d laugh. Similar to your comp at the end of the chain.

I do the same thing! It works so well there and really gives everything that warm, tube-like quality to it. I run the Gain somewhere around 3, crank the Level to 10 and do Low/High Cuts around 80hz/6khz and it works wonderfully!

@@angeloj.affronti8627 - yep, level at 10, bring the gain up just enough to add slight punch above the overall volume. Don’t usually mess with EQ but might check that out? Edit: I place it in front of the cab block.

@sboy1955 I use the Helix to jump my real amp live and use the Helix's preamp modeling and effects to go into the real poweramp. The Studio Tube Pre works perfect at the end of the chain!
Using the High / Low Cuts have a huge overall effect on my tone (likely due to where it's placed) and kind of gently shapes everything without being too heavy-handed. It's a great trick that more people should know about
