Excellent video! Just one comment on the Avagard technique - I would suggest using a first pump of the solution to 'paint' both the forearms first, then a second to do the hands last. This prevents you from breaking the sterile field if your forearm sweeps go above the most proximal point of your first scrub of the day!

This is so interesting, I’m not planning on working in surgery but I do plan on studying midwifery. So far I’m taking an STNA course and i can finally realize how sterile the hand washing Technique is for surgery compared to the usual “less than 20 second of friction” wash. I was unaware that you didn’t have to wash your hand again working between patients.
I love learning about these kinds of nuances to certain professions that the general population just overlooks. Thanks for working so hard to avoid infections!
I have an assessment on this tomorrow. Iv watched this and the open and over the gown gloving a few times as a refresher and i feel ready. Thank you :)
You're not supposed to use the brush portion anywhere besides your nails, as it causes micro-abrasions on your skin. Bad for you, and bad for patient. Use the sponge side for the rest of the job. Also, you forgot your web spaces, and you are supposed to scrub 2" above your elbows. In Europe, they are only using the nail pick, and the brush side to clean nails, then they discard the scrub brush all together. It's only a matter of time until we folllow suit.
If you count of the number of proper scrub strokes shown by Shane it is 600. There are so many videos demonstrating improper scrubbing for surgery. Thank GOD for Shane Friedman for taking the time to make all his videos.

Well thanks for the instructions! Got a few questions (I'm not trying to be funny. I'm just ignorant) : Why 10 stokes every surface? Does that mean all contaminant should already be gone at 10? Your hands is consider sterile after this kind of wash? Is second wash ever necessary to ensure coverage even if you haven't dropped the sponge? Sometimes the soap doesn't seem foamy enough. With this, does it mean large amount of contaminants are still left on our hands on our regular, everyday, hand wash (not pre-surgery hand wash) even if we're washing in the way CDC recommended?
