Of all the Pichu nerfs, the worse is easily the self-damage. He takes like double what he used to, so before, while it would be favorable to camp for a bit or lean back, Pichu not has to fight aggro otherwise he damages himself, and it sometimes makes fighting not even worth it. I spend thirty seconds lightning looping a Bowser, and suddenly, I'm closer to kill percent than he is. That said, he is rising again. So many people insta-dropped him after his nerfs, but after some pretty good results from Nietono, people are starting to pick him back up again. I've seen a pretty sizable rise in popularity recently.
Honestly it was a combination of the nerfs that made pichu drop. It’s because they changed the damage, hurtbox, and ftilt all at the same time. Imo they should’ve done one or two to start and see how potent the nerfs were.
He’s still a very good character, but god them nerfed him waaay to fuckin hard. I didn’t even know about the hit box nerf until now. That’s how much they nerfed him that I didn’t even know about everything a year and a half later. I think they nerfed f tilt way too much and the doubling all the self damage was just stupid. He already died early enough. Maybe make certain moves do more self damage, like thunder, but god that was really dumb. They should really tone that down a bit in a later patch but that won’t happen
I wanna see the self damage returned back to what it was before the patch and make it so skull bash and agility don’t do self damage because they’re not even electric moves
If it wasn’t for the high self-damage nerf, I would still be playing pichu. I don’t anymore though because just taking a stock puts him in kill percent for most lethal moves
Honestly, the only nerfs I wanted for Pichu were along the lines of more escapable loops and the slightly bigger hitbox. I think the devs could toss him a bone.
While the pichu nerfs did hurt the character a lot, recently the character's meta has seen some improvement. One of the biggest finds was pichu's IDJ combos. In my opinion, pichu's IDJ combos are the same (or slightly worse) as falcon's IDJ combos; racks up a lot of percent, can lead to stocks lost early, ect. Obviously this isn't going to make pichu broken again but in my opinion, these idj combos make the character low high tier

Great video larry! This kind of introspective on the character is incredibly entertaining and useful for new players, especially with the top player interview aspect. I would love to see this kind of video done with other characters. I feel like this would be a great series to show to newer players interested in the game and in the character. However, it’s also nice as an experienced player to see other perspectives on the character over time.
I'm slightly amazed you didn't mentioned Pikachu AT ALL. One of the main reasons why Pichu became less popular is due to Pikachu being a thing who plays like Pichu but better on most aspects. Around 3.0.0 Pichu wasn't necesarily better or worse than Pikachu with Pichu having more kill power alongside hability to rack up damage, and Pikachu having better control of the game and much better survavility. In 3.1.0, to add salt on the injury, Pikachu's grab range was buffed. Even without the nerfs Pikachu would eventually become better than Pichu, but with them into account Pikachu is the better choice in at least 4 out of 5 due to more consistent combo game, more access to kill confirms to compensate that lack of normal kill power, better survability, more overall movility, the hability to slow down the game with thunderjolts and more range.
Pichu and K.Rool were two unfortunate victims of premature nerfs that offset their character archetypes in ways that made them much weaker than they should be. Pichu still has what it takes to upset tournaments imo, but it's just so much harder than it should've been.
i secondary melee pichu and was a ultimate pichu main till joker dropped now i secondary him. i just like pichu more than pika. pika is lame pichu is cool.
Bc this time he's way more different. He's faster in the air, has a stronger punishgame and more damage output, and he falls faster (although fastfall-speed is the same). In this game he has advantages and disadvantages compared to Pikachu. In melee it was almost literally just disadvantages.
I loved Pichu in the beginnings, i felt that he had everything for the game, that was the reason that i mained solo pichu but you know, he got nerfed. Now actually i use Hero to experiment a new gameplay for the game and the meta in general, because using pichu now is really difficult to approach characters that got buffed recently such as Captain Falcon, Ness, Marth, and losing to big characters like bowser, and more, but one of the reasons that i use solo Hero now, its because its an alternative option to dont use pichu in the mayority of matchups and wait that they will buff again possbly in the future
While yes they over nerfed Pichu he's still incredibly fun to play as and I feel like people aren't taking advantage of Pichu's self damage. I personally love it because of rage. If I know I can't kill because of their defense I'll just self damage until rage kicks in and wait for them to approach.
The 3.1 patch nerfed Pichu too much for one update. Increase hurtbox, more recoil, slower moves, made him drop significantly. Should’ve been one or the other nerfs, not all at once
I think characters whose meta didn't develop early will be best down the road. I don't know that Sheik or Diddy will ever be top 5 or not but I could see the potential. Characters that reward you for playing them with time are probably best imo.
One thing I never got is that Pichu got nerfed because he took stocks insanely fast, had a small hurtbox and has a great advantage state. So why nerf THIS Pokemon and not Pikachu as well who has the same, if not better, moveset and gameplan?
My guess is that pika win rate in elite smash isn’t that good because he’s harder to play than pichu, so even though pika is better it doesn’t show up.
Pikachu doesn't have the same gameplan at all. Pichu is an aggressive glass cannon, whereas Pikachu is a potent all-rounder who can play both defense and offense at the same time. The reason why Pichu was nerfed over Pikachu was likely because Pichu is a much easier character to get results with (as seen by the much quicker development of his meta along with his higher results early on). He was able to get a bunch of high placements at tournaments and ended up being on the nerf list, whereas Pika, despite being a better character, is significantly more difficult to use and has relatively poor results considering his tier placement.
Pichu I feel is one of the biggest examples of how the patches properly nerfed a character without ruining them but I agree that people just learning how to fight him hindered him more than the nerfs, because even after those nerfs he still has a ton of the things that make him so dangerous.
His kill confirm now kills way too late for a supposed glass cannon. His hurtbox is now bigger than Pikachu, even though Pichu is a baby pokemon in the Pikachu line. He's still scary with his thunder and dair, but his neutral is scuffed and his ground game is neutered.
Good to see the old narrated kind of video back. I didn’t really like the live-recorded highlight-style from the videos of the past several weeks. I personally think Pichu doesn’t need to exist as a semi-clone of Pikachu, but while he does, I think he could probably use a small buff to tone down his vulnerability to camping specifically. I don’t think glass cannons should be pushed to such an extreme extent, and in light of that I’m fine if he remains just barely solo viable or relegated to being a strong counterpick. VoiD whipping him out to beat up Leo’s Joker at Mainstage is a lot cooler than using him entirely and just rolling dice on good matchups in your bracket to me.
I honestly want pre patch pichu back, I think he would be an exciting top tier to watch. He probably wouldnt be the best character though. I would only keep the hit box nerf honestly.
I loved this video style and the guest appearance giving us professional commentary from people who know what they're saying is very valuable. Id love more like this! And congrats on sponsors!
Great content Larry. I definitely appreciate these docu-style Smash videos. Void is always great, but I find it way more interesting hearing top player answers to well thought out interview questions than just hearing them rant on Twitch.
I didn’t know they nerfed pichu THAT much jesus. Like I thought it was just the nerf to f tilt but an increased hurt box AND you get even more percent from moves????? Not even a pichu main, but this is way too much for one character lmao. At the same time I’m lowkey hoping they do this to the actual annoying and overtuned characters at the moment....
Really loved this video! You should do this with some other characters too! I liked how you talked to VoiD in this video and then with Leo in the Marth one. Keep it up!
Making him easier to hit is fine because some characters can’t even grab him when he’s shielding right in front of them. Everything else was unnecessary.
i used to be a solo pichu main. before the nerfs i was still doing okay, but when the nerfs hit then it screwed me over. it worsen my play style because i racked up more damage so i had to be more lenient on with how i used my best moves. I think the fact that pichu's meta evolved very fast and how people were still getting used to the game make sense, but even then I would still play the character if she didn't get nerfed.
I’m still very confused on his nerfs in the first place I mean one of the lightest characters does self damage on 75% of their moveset. What more nerfs did you need?
As a Pichu main, I think the ftilt nerf was understandable. The self-damage nerfs were way too much though. I could understand them to some extent if they had added it to bair only (I definitely was abusing that move early on), but nerfing thunderjolt really hurt.
I hope that one day they will reverse the self-damage nerfs, but I doubt it'll happen. Starting to think they still meant Pichu to be a bad character in Ultimate. Pichu was never winning S tiers to start with, and they have yet to nerf Pika, who has been considered the best by most for a very long time now. Hope I am wrong, but those nerfs were very obviously excessive, when the rest of Ultimate's changes have generally been relatively subtle.
I still think hes insane. Might be because my character is literally -5 vs him but his concept is "hes way too good but therefor the lightest character and deals dmg to himself". He is too good, literally eveyrthing. There is nothing he cant do and everything he does he does extremly well. His only weakness holding him back is his killability (YIKES) due to weight and self dmg. My opinion ofc. Might be biased because Pichu was literally designed to stomp my main and I see how hes "only high tier" but there is no way hes mid tier ever
One strength that I don't see talked about is pichu's ability to drag down bair off stage. It can pull the opponent so far down that anyone with a subpar recovery is dead. It's especially useful against tether characters
The self damage increase and ftilt nerf sucks for Pichu, hitbox nerf was understandable. Felt like it was which of these nerfs should be implemented, and Nintendo went "yes."
I disagree. While I do agree with the hurtbox nerf, it was overdone, his hurtbox is currently larger thank Pikachu's. His ftilt, as cheesy as it was, was the only note-worthy move in his arsenal. As shown in the video, 120% mario on the ledge won't die to it, not to mention that the framedata is untouched (meaning counterplay to ftilt would be exactly the same as it is today). What kill moves does he have now? bair/dair, down B and smash attacks, noticeably less than other characters. Fthrow is barely even worth mentioning with how weak it is. You can't even call him a "glass cannon" anymore as he's all glass and no canon.
The problem with Pichu is that against who he already struggled before the nerf is now even worse, and the ones he was really dominant now is like a small advantage; IDJ really helps his punish game and can raise him a bit tho.
hated this rat. pikachu was annoying to fight but jesus christ pichu was a nightmare as a falcon main. glad he was nerfed. just play pikachu should be that way always.
The problem is that Pichu is always competing with Pikachu, since they are basically echo fighterz. If one is better than the other, then there is no point in playing the weaker version.
As a melee player I really enjoyed pichu on release, then they nerfed him into the ground and I lost all interest in the game after trying to switch to inkling, always felt a bit sour about that.
ESAM can now finally claim that Pikachu is #1 in Smash for real this time. =p Jokes aside, I think other top tiers need to be nerfed a bit too. Also mid/high tier isn't so bad because the more characters around the same viability the better. Shocked that Pikachu wasn't nerfed as hard as Pichu though.
@@chrispo7610 F-tilt didn't just kill alright, it was kinda insanely strong. Depending on rage, it could kill heavies at ledge at 100% while being extremely quick, safe, huge for a Pichu move, and able to be confirmed into. It's honestly still pretty decent, since again, it's safe and very large for a Pichu tilt.
As Main pichu i love to play it, it's really hard to win constantly because the nerfs, but with this little buff i see hope for our little rat, maybe in a future patch they buff it with less auto damage or a little more range, i love play pichu.

Hope I am wrong, but those nerfs were very obviously excessive, when the rest of Ultimate's changes have generally been relatively subtle.
this comment aged very well
@@Simon-hs7ik Dreams really do come true lol
Yep. I've not seen a Pichu in forever.
Also I'm confident Samus is solo mainable. She's got defence and recovery out the wazoo.
This style content is so awesome. Really enjoyed the video!
This was an amazing video
I still think hes insane. Might be because my character is literally -5 vs him but his concept is "hes way too good but therefor the lightest character and deals dmg to himself". He is too good, literally eveyrthing. There is nothing he cant do and everything he does he does extremly well. His only weakness holding him back is his killability (YIKES) due to weight and self dmg. My opinion ofc. Might be biased because Pichu was literally designed to stomp my main and I see how hes "only high tier" but there is no way hes mid tier ever
Who’s your main?
unless u play ganon, i dont see how u go -5 against pichu :/
What do you play? I guess Roy, because roy is awful against Pichu.
@@GeometryDashDeeApple even Ganondorf doesn't suffer that bad.
@@N12015 Yeah Roy vs Pichu is sad lol, I main Fox
Well, they buffed Pichu!
One strength that I don't see talked about is pichu's ability to drag down bair off stage. It can pull the opponent so far down that anyone with a subpar recovery is dead. It's especially useful against tether characters
If I'm not mistaken, is Pichu's Thunder launch angle also one of its strengths?
@@ffiiggyy yes it always sends the way you are facing
1 year later I hope we see the rise and fall of Pikachu

At least Pichu can still recover from his fall, unlike Little Mac.
That was actually a very good video, more of this please
See it's a shame because Pichu is so goddang hype compared to stupid Pikachu. I personally wanna see him buffed.
The problem with Pichu is that against who he already struggled before the nerf is now even worse, and the ones he was really dominant now is like a small advantage;
IDJ really helps his punish game and can raise him a bit tho.
hated this rat. pikachu was annoying to fight but jesus christ pichu was a nightmare as a falcon main.
glad he was nerfed. just play pikachu should be that way always.
I really liked this style of video, very well done :)
Me who doesn't play smash anymore: interesting
As a pichu main since day one, the nerfs has brought pain lol
Same
The problem is that Pichu is always competing with Pikachu, since they are basically echo fighterz.
If one is better than the other, then there is no point in playing the weaker version.
i feel so many characters in ultimate are worth solo maiming due to how solid the cast is.
I just don’t understand why they nerfed the shit outta pichu but left pikachu alone.
As a melee player I really enjoyed pichu on release, then they nerfed him into the ground and I lost all interest in the game after trying to switch to inkling, always felt a bit sour about that.
Personally still think Pichu would be well represented if it weren’t for the nerfs. The character was still insane even against defensive play.
Now if only Pikachu can get some nerfs...
After the nerf it was pikachus time to shine
Gotta say I'm a fan of this style of video. I'd love to see one about about game and watch with Maister.
Do the mii Fighter Challenge, you make a mii after your self and you get your highest roster GSP
ESAM can now finally claim that Pikachu is #1 in Smash for real this time. =p
Jokes aside, I think other top tiers need to be nerfed a bit too. Also mid/high tier isn't so bad because the more characters around the same viability the better. Shocked that Pikachu wasn't nerfed as hard as Pichu though.
I’ll say that the biggest nerf to pichu was the self damage increase to most of his moves in 3.1.0
@Daniel Kornacki keep in mind ftilt went from killing alright to killing to pretty bad
@@chrispo7610 F-tilt didn't just kill alright, it was kinda insanely strong. Depending on rage, it could kill heavies at ledge at 100% while being extremely quick, safe, huge for a Pichu move, and able to be confirmed into. It's honestly still pretty decent, since again, it's safe and very large for a Pichu tilt.

kinda want my pichu back
As Main pichu i love to play it, it's really hard to win constantly because the nerfs, but with this little buff i see hope for our little rat, maybe in a future patch they buff it with less auto damage or a little more range, i love play pichu.
