I seriously don't understand why some people have a hard time believing that some of us really love this film. They complain that it has no narrative as if other time based artforms like music needed any narrative to be compelling. This one is like a psychedelic 1 hour long trip witth awesome fast, almost virtuosistic editing, super interesting and vivid portrayals of urban life almost 100 years ago, and a constant riveting rhythm. What's not to like? Every time somebody says "uh PReteNCIoUs" it makes me feel like they must be the single most boring person in the entire planet. Like seriously, thanks for taking the time to cross your name out of the vibe list lol.
@@iammraat3059 shoot as much as possible. Go watch movies. Read about them. Read the magazines. Sorry, sounds generic, but there is no best way. Only your way. Go find a rental house and most of the time they will teach you if they are not to busy. And the technical side is not the most important imo... Shoot, learn, repeat.
@@markus_knoedel I shoot but on a phone, I cannot afford equipment. I try to work on editing, sound mixing and studying stories. But I feel underconfident when it comes to lighting techniques, and by extention the technical side, what lens to use, how to compose movement within the frame. I should read the american cinematographer ?
@@iammraat3059 yes, read everything you can lay your hands on. I made some Super8 short movies (yes I am this old) and later started as an camera assistent. And I took a lot of fotos to learn about light and compositing. Lighting statues etc.
I understand and respect the importance of ‘Man With a Movie Camera’. It is necessary viewing. What it achieves in both shot composition and editing is remarkable. I literally have screenshots of certain frames of the film. However, I personally find the film borderline unwatchable. I say ‘borderline’ because I did in fact watch it. But I cannot confidently recommend it to anyone. Also, you can get about 80% of what this movie is serving you by watching Battleship Potemkin. A vastly superior movie with remarkable editing techniques. So, I guess you could say Eisenstein was right.
@@mongolianqwerty123 That’s completely fair. I guess it’s just a shame there was literally no narrative whatsoever. Like, I understand the point of the film. Or at least I think I do. But I would have been able to follow along much better if this movie had even the thinnest plot. It reminded a lot of a film called ‘Koyaanisqatsi’. Much like ‘Man with a Movie Camera’ it too has absolutely no plot. It feels like every so often these feature length screen savers get released and they might just not be my cup of tea.
At the time it would blown peoples minds but now yeah its pointless. Battleship Potemkin is a film you can still get stuff from, it was about 30 years ahead of its time on some aspects

Overall I agree with you, although TMWTMC has much more dazzling imagery, imo. I guess it depends on your tolerance levels for non-narrative features.
