Hex nuts are a six‑sided nut and are the most commonly shaped nut today. They are used with anchor shackles, bolts, screws, and other externally threaded components. Hex nuts, in conjunction with these other fasteners, are used to connect both metal and wood components to prevent tension and movement.
A nut is a type of fastener with a threaded hole. Nuts are almost always used in conjunction with a mating bolt to fasten multiple parts together. The two partners are kept together by a combination of their threads' friction (with slight elastic deformation), a slight stretching of the bolt, and compression of the parts to be held together.
Complete Manufacturing of Hex Nut | Production Process of Hexagon Nut Bolt | Hex Nut Manufacturing
Where vibration or rotation may work a nut loose, various locking mechanisms may be employed: lock washers, jam nuts, specialist adhesive thread-locking fluid such as Loctite, safety pins (split pins) or lock wire in conjunction with castellated nuts, nylon inserts (nyloc nut), or slightly oval-shaped threads.
Square nuts, as well as bolt heads, were the first shape made and used to be the most common largely because they were much easier to manufacture, especially by hand.
The most common shape today is hexagonal, for similar reasons as the bolt head: six sides give a good granularity of angles for a tool to approach from (good in tight spots), but more (and smaller) corners would be vulnerable to being rounded off. It takes only one sixth of a rotation to obtain the next side of the hexagon and grip is optimal. However, polygons with more than six sides do not give the requisite grip and polygons with fewer than six sides take more time to be given a complete rotation. Other specialized shapes exist for certain needs, such as wingnuts for finger adjustment and captive nuts (e.g. cage nuts) for inaccessible areas.
Hexagon full nuts are the most common nuts that are used with bolts, set screws and with any other fastener that has a machine thread. Orbital Fasteners offer hexagon full nut sizes ranging from M2 to M48 in grade 8.8 or 10.9 available in mild steel, bright zinc plated finish or in galvanized grade 8.
How to Draw a Hex Nut
Set your compass to a radius of at least two inches.
Position your compass' sharp point on any point on the circle's circumference.
Position your compass' sharp point at the intersection you just made.
Do Step 3 repeatedly to make a total of six arcs that intersect with the circle's circumference.

Yep, 100 years ago!
Same thing I was thinking. Seems most of this production would have been done in another country, back in the 70s and 80s. Possibly mexico or china. Maybe not Mexico. They had electrical infrastructure issues in the 80s
Most of those machines were probably from WW2 era.
A lot of these old machines came from Britain. We built them to last. My Colchester lathe was built in 1964 and still going strong. Much better than a Chinese import.
In fact old machines are getting hard to find now as so many have been exported to India and Pakistan. I bet a load of old US iron has gone there as well.
