One of my favorite aspects of the music of Yes is the combination of themes and the intricate composition of each theme within a comprehensive whole. The transitions are both at the edges of each theme and comfortably blended. So glad you are enjoying this unique band.
Appreciate your reaction, thanks a lot. Helps to keep music alive, and as well, the mood of the time was very much contrarian to the idea of strict classification of music. The London Symphony did an album of Beatles songs, and many contemporary jazz artists did as well.I remember seeing A Herbie Mann concert, a jazz flautist, playing the Allman Bros. ' in memory of Elizabeth Reed' and prefacing it by saying that if the audience hadn't heard of the Allmans, they were seriously missing out
Un gran grupo musical que en su estructura musical navega por rock clásico, sinfónico, gótico, hevimetal, sicodelico etc., los nuevos músicos emergente debieran estudiar a estos grupos Yes, Emerson, L,P, Yethro.
According to lore, the studio they recorded this album in had monitors with terrible bass response, so they kept cranking the bass so they could at least hear it. When they heard the final mix, the bass was thundering. They decided to make that part of their sound, from that point on. Happy accidents.
Yes and Rush are my two favorite bands of all time. Great musicianship, lyrics, showmanship. And Geddy and Chris both used Rickenbacher bases for years and did their best stuff with them.
Chris Squire. I saw the last tour with him. Such a privilege. They played ALL of Close to the Edge, Going for the One, and this album. That's it. ALL the original instruments. Wow. Sigh.
Classic Rock is just a term made up by radio stations to describe popular rock music from rock's golden age, typically from the late 60's all the way to the 80's. As such it includes many subgenres such as Prog Rock, Hard Rock, Soft Rock, Blues rock, Glam Rock etc. It is not a genre of its own, but a catch-all "umbrella" term.
Some is. The stuff you hear on the radio on classic rock stations like Pink Floyd, Yes and ELP but that's about it. The songs you hear by Kansas, Jethro Tull and Genesis are classic rock but not prog even though they are all considered progressive rock bands. Confusing I know.
I was playing this song in London in the 80s while doing some part time cab driving. An American tourist got in, heard the song and said, in a very loud voice, "fuck me, I'm being driven by a hippy".
Talk about a great live song...especially so when the crown, at the coda, descends the notes as the song fades! I've seen Yes five timesand "I've Seen All Good People" is ALWAYS a solid opener and/or closer to a concert.
In the era of this album , Artists had a tendency to blend songs together creating an album side that you would easily listen to all the way though. Vinyl records were sometimes spoke of in ways like ''I like side 2 better than side 1 etc... Since you had to manually get up and flip a record , we would get accustomed to listening to entire sides of lps . This would give a chance to fully appreciate what the artist had to offer, now we click to next track looking for that instant gratification ,lol , and get some vinyl !
We all have memories attached to music, its grand. I remember, (yikes, cause I was watching Annabelle movie, and that song "Day After Day ", by Badfinger was playing, and I was like oohh God, I remember this, but couldn't for the life of me remember who sang it, started singing the words, but forgot the group!!.), listening to this song, laying on my bed, had an old 1950's type radio at my headboard, and my headboard was under my window and with Day After Day playing among others I'd lay for hours , curtains open, blue sky, clouds rolling by, it was just magical, just floated away on all this great music, had my own endorphins, to get me high, but the music was the catalyst, always. I know it sounds corny, but Neil Diamond, Carly Simon, Carol King, Linda Ronstadt("Blue Bayou), Roundabout by Yes, , ohh man that was like THE summer song, when you heard that you knew summer had started!, if you haven't listened to that one yet, please do so, and everything Yes. Also check out ELP(Emerson Lake and Palmer), "From the Beginning, Lucky Man, and Moody Blues, "Nights in White Satin(fav, long version) Tuesday Afternoon (also has an extended version), The Voice(another of my favs,), the album cover for Long Distance Voyager is lovely, depicts an old world scene, in a village, when people would churn their own butter and all. Some of the albums back then had the most imaginative artwork, and pictures. Enjoy the journey, Peace✌
Oh - at Yes's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame - which occurred after Chris Squire died (what a shame) - Geddy Lee of Rush played bass in the tribute performance with the remaining members of Yes. And Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson talked about how influential Yes was to Rush's music.
Progressive rock can also be classic rock. And this song is both. "Progressive" just means what it sounds like it means - the artists are pushing the envelope, trying to make something new and good that doesn't sound like all that came before.
My favorite song from this album is, "Perpetual Change". You should hear it, just for the surprise stereo effect in the middle of the song. "Starship Trooper" from this album is another gem! Especially, for the building outro.
