really? were you the drummer? I would love to get some mp3's of this recording and "PickPocket Man", not the album versions. These versions are faster. -Max
@soulmachineNo1 You nailed it perfectly. Skaters back then had their own style that was unlike any other subculture. And everyone admired the clothes like with the Powell and Santa Cruz t-shirts and the airwalk and vision streetwear shoes. We had our own identity back then. Today they seemed to be mixed in with all the other mainstream trends. Proud to have lived that era.
@TRE1275 I semi - agree. First board I ever had was the Jeff Kendall Graffiti model. Followed by a Jinx, don't remember which one now. I loved those days, best of my life. I also loved as they added noses to the boards and the eventual progression to where it is now. It opened up so much more in what you could do with a board. That's what it was all about back then. Creating.
Awesome. Total '80s sweetness. Notice how ramps and vert skating were *it* back then (especially all the different "airs" one could achieve: "Madonna Air," "Christ Air (by Christian Hosoi)," "Mosquito Air," "Rocket Air" etc.). They were sought after as much on half/quarter pipes as they were on launch ramps (even harder to do!). Street skating hadn't yet caught on as a popular form (you can count the number of street ollies in this vid on one hand). Those were the days. Thanks for sharing.
In 1980 I was 14 years old and had a nice half pipe in my backyard. I was skating Kryptonics and Dogtown decks with Tracker Extracts on on the Kryptonics and Independent's on the Dodtown deck. Wheels were Bones on both. I'm 45 years old now. I still skate. I might not be able to do a handplant any longer but back in the day I was good..Real good. The eighties ruled the skate scene and still does.
@tremdeville This has to be one of the best songs on a skate video ever. I remember back in the day kids would record this song from their tv to cassette recorder then play it while they skated a ramp.
My first board was Rob Rosscop ugly face. I look back so fondly on those days. The thing I really liked about the skate scene back then, it was totally underground and if you skated you were cool. Today I feel that element has gone I'm not saying that's a bad thing but it just felt a bit more special somehow. Great days..
I feel sorry for skaters today because we all started skating in 80s because their were no rules and no stereotypes . Now it seems certain tricks are acceptable certain skaters are acceptable and the freedom has gone. Peace to all the old school skaters.
@schenkelbart88 The name of the band at the time of this video was Eight Days a Week. They may have shortened the name because of a copyright issue since they got the name from a Beatles song. German born professional skateboarder Claus Grabke was in the band.
so many people wear skating clothes when they dont even skate. 5 years ago, in california, skating was like a trend. EVERYONE skated. but now people see you skating and theyre like, "you still skate?" like it was just some kind of fad or fashion scene. fuck that
Thanks for the upload!!! And: back in da dayz the american pro skaters called Claus Grabke The Münster Monster / lol, because he was the only guy from germany with the same skill level. (Münster was and is the main sk8 city in germany). Greetz to all true nice oldschool boarders outta there!.
@MonounsaturatedBliss I have great nostaglia for this era (mid 80s) but my favorite era would have to be '90-'91 when the blind video came out. Both eras seem so much more golden and special than todays.
Wow I never knew the trick at 1:33 even existed! I used to always pretended to skate on the wall like that with my feet in elementary and after seeing this clip I feel nostalgic :)
I think this is the video where I first heard the Descendents' "Coolige" and ever since then I was hooked. I know it was a Santa Cruz vid and this one always comes to mind when I here that song.
That's cool. I remember having a few friends who would hang around skaters but never actually skated themselves. At least they were not pretending they were in to skating just because their friends were. Back in the mid 80s I remember half the town I lived in were skaters until it's popularity died in the early 90s. WHen all was said and done only a small handful were still out doing it, everyone else quit. MOst of them only skated cause it happened to be trendy at the time.
@soulmachineNo1 , Man that was one of my best boards because it had a crazy tail and I could ollie like waist high with that board till one day it slipped out from under me and under a truck tire (CRACK), my secong best board was a Lance Mountain when they started putting Boneite, I hated the Boneite because it caused the boards to seperate easily. I did this ollie to truck stall from like 6ft away and when I landed the tail split, I put Rat Nuts but the kept grinding away.
@TRE1275 Oh yeah especially the powell boards that had the thin black layers in between plies.... I forget what the heck they called it now! Add on some rails and wheels that were double wide and trucks that were much larger, Indies weighed a ton then. Oh man good times!
I remember when "street skating" was what you did , to get to the half pipe. Mix in some wall riding and launch ramps with the occasional ollie. It was all about, power, speed, style. Now, while technical ,street skating is just so damn boring to watch. Watching Hosoi made me want to fly!! We used to fast forward the Rodney Mullen parts from every Powell Peralta movie, just so we could watch Caballero skate . Now i can appreciate his brilliance, but it was so damn boring. The vert scenes at the end of The Search for Animal Chin were just so beautiful. Athletic poetry in motion.
spacemanbose not sure, probably because it lacked aggression and style . Now I can appreciate the difficulty , but my friends and I built a half pipe in a friends yard and that's all we wanted to do. 1986 was the date and airs over coping was everything. Plus the expression was easier to achieve .
spacemanbose thanks for your maturity. Really, didn't realize Mullen was literally creating modern day skating almost 30 years ago. We just didn't get it , back then. He is a freakin Legend though! Be safe
Sean Lahm Just reading comments... I remember reading a Transworld Skateboarding magazine article in ‘89 where they asked skaters what the future of skateboarding would be. The general consensus was prophetically “Freestyle-ville” where boards would get thinner & have two kick-tails....all about technical tricks and creativity. There were just not enough half-pipes to please the masses.
I have this movie, I've never been a skater but I loved that movie. Can anyone tell me the artist/song on the movie? There was a lot of crazy stuff when I was a kid they blow my mind while I eat Capt'n Crunch. Good vibes, guys.
I really miss skating back in the 70's and 80's. It's all we did all day and all night. All over Southern California.
Nothing better then the 80s SK8 and having fun with friends!!!
Man, Hosoi's airs were just legendary. Those tweaked ass indy and method airs-just perfection.
Never underestimate the old school board
gives me goosbumps to this very day. i wish i could turn back time
Marc Holstein same here mate
Still remember the moment when i first saw it, local shop gazing up at the monitor. I miss those days .
Brings a tear to my eyes

+David davmo Morris Love this song!!
David davmo Morris ▪Yep! Claus Grabke's band! this was my high school anthem
YESSSSS Ur rightt... i`ve been the drummer
really? were you the drummer? I would love to get some mp3's of this recording and "PickPocket Man", not the album versions. These versions are faster. -Max
Man I remember watching this when it first came out!!! I still get the same feeling.
My god this takes me back so much the hairs have stood up on the back of my neck.....
.........i was a 14 year old skater in search for Animal Chin...
Those were the days!!
So glad I got to live that era of skating
crazy how good quality this is. most of the old skate vids look horrible on youtube
It was a golden age for a lot of things, like arcade games. I think the operative word is innocence.
Now so many things are feigned.
Takes me back to when I was about 14 this. That tune gives me goosebumps.
@DaMetalBeast it's 'What's so strange about me' from the band 'Eight Dayz'. The band Claus Grabke was also playing in. Awesome song! :-)
Creating.
Always takes me back to the "innocent" days of skating 2/3 of the day, every day. Nostalgia in it's purest form for me, love it.
Awesome! When i was twelve i chose this to watch with my friends at my birthday party :)
Awesome. Total '80s sweetness. Notice how ramps and vert skating were *it* back then (especially all the different "airs" one could achieve: "Madonna Air," "Christ Air (by Christian Hosoi)," "Mosquito Air," "Rocket Air" etc.). Man i wish i could find that record Eight Dayz!Sk8 rock!!
In 1980 I was 14 years old and had a nice half pipe in my backyard.

I might not be able to do a handplant any longer but back in the day I was good..Real good. The eighties ruled the skate scene and still does.
O my... Good memories...
@telomerase1978 Somewhere in Arizona I believe. Probably tore down by now though.
So cool to hear this soundtrack again. I am loving this. Its a better quality than the copy of a copy that I had in the day...
@tremdeville This has to be one of the best songs on a skate video ever. I remember back in the day kids would record this song from their tv to cassette recorder then play it while they skated a ramp.

Good times that never come back😔
I wish i did im just a late 90's kid that look back at those legendary times
it's one of the best song I've ever been heard in mu life (sorry my English,I hope u understand
It's a bit sad when you realize that these days are gone forever.
I feel sorry for skaters today because we all started skating in 80s because their were no rules and no stereotypes . Now it seems certain tricks are acceptable certain skaters are acceptable and the freedom has gone.
Peace to all the old school skaters.
anyone know what any of the music is in these vids (wheels and streets)??
this is the first skateboard vid i saw when i was 14 . Honestly this vid made me fall inlove with skateboarding ,thanks for posting it man !

EVERYONE skated. but now people see you skating and theyre like, "you still skate?" like it was just some kind of fad or fashion scene. fuck that

And: back in da dayz the american pro skaters called Claus Grabke
The Münster Monster / lol, because he was the only guy from germany with the same skill level. (Münster was and is the main sk8 city in germany).

Rad:) can anyone tell me the name of the TSOL song in the nude bowl section of this vid - can't find it ANYWHERE, please help!
@MonounsaturatedBliss I have great nostaglia for this era (mid 80s) but my favorite era would have to be '90-'91 when the blind video came out. Both eras seem so much more golden and special than todays.
@rexer2003 No he's now a judge on the Xgames. Couldn't agree more, Natas and Hosoi were total legends.
@ktkraft You nailed it perfectly. My feelings exactly. I dont think skateboarding will be that special ever or unique ever again.
The song “What’s So Strange About Me?” is by a band called Eight Dayz led by Claus Grabke.
We would watch theses videos as a group and then go out and try some of it, great memories.
i hope this video stays on youtube forever
I sure do love me some Hosoi.
No one will ever shred as hard as the dudes from this generation.
pleaseeeeeee!!! can someody tell me the name of this song
"leave me all alone" & "pickpocket man" are great tracks too!
Are they skating w/ 63 mm wheels?
Name of the song??
Works so good with Bon Iver in the background
@TRE1275 I bought a blank board so that i could reshape it into a old school board. i also bought ribs and everything
That's cool. I remember having a few friends who would hang around skaters but never actually skated themselves. My youth, skating was awesome.
I had an h-street board off sal babier.
I realy like the style of Rob roskop and Tony hawk
@soulmachineNo1 , Man that was one of my best boards because it had a crazy tail and I could ollie like waist high with that board till one day it slipped out from under me and under a truck tire (CRACK), my secong best board was a Lance Mountain when they started putting Boneite, I hated the Boneite because it caused the boards to seperate easily. They referenced this part in the new 'Pretty Sweet' video.
@MonounsaturatedBliss you are correct!!!!!!
And what song is playing when Roskopp is skating the Love Bowl in Arizona?
@Jackdeth1134 Eight Dayz -Whats so strange about me?
The three last tricks...are nuts!
love the old style sk8ing and the boards are rad as fuck too,ALL 80S ALL DAY.
@TRE1275 Oh yeah especially the powell boards that had the thin black layers in between plies.... I forget what the heck they called it now! Add on some rails and wheels that were double wide and trucks that were much larger, Indies weighed a ton then. Oh man good times!
Hosoi and Natas are legends!
does anybody know the sound effect in the beginning??
I remember when "street skating" was what you did , to get to the half pipe. Mix in some wall riding and launch ramps with the occasional ollie. It was all about, power, speed, style. why you didn t like mullen street style? because it was new at the time? i find both street and vert beautiful
spacemanbose not sure, probably because it lacked aggression and style . Now I can appreciate the difficulty , but my friends and I built a half pipe in a friends yard and that's all we wanted to do. 1986 was the date and airs over coping was everything. Plus the expression was easier to achieve .
+Sean Lahm interesting. I think that were beautiful years for skateing and not only...thank u for your interesting point of view
spacemanbose thanks for your maturity. Really, didn't realize Mullen was literally creating modern day skating almost 30 years ago. We just didn't get it , back then. He is a freakin Legend though! Be safe
