I see a lot of people saying on here how rik was funnier then lenny and wiped the floor with him. That is what Rik did on blackadder he said he was going to steel the show and he did everytime but never to make the other person look bad just because hes Rik and he was unique.
Rik was given that spot in Black Adder because of the rivalry between Rik & Rowan. Rik told Ben he wouldn’t appear on Black Adder unless his character was funnier than Rowans. He became Lord Flash Heart. The rivalry lasted up until Riks death. With Rowan “conquering” America and Riks push Drop Dead Fred failing (although a cult classic sales was poor) the rivalry never went for Rik. Its known before Riks death that the BBC approved a series of Hooligans Island. Rik saw this as a chance at a resurgence especially with Rowan doing so little these days. Rik pleaded with Ade to do it but Ade thought they have done all they can with Bottom and the characters and he also wanted to pursue a musical career. Rik died soon after. It leaves a sour taste after Rik carried Ade to stardom for Ade to ultimately let Rik down in the end.

And if there was any such rivalry between Rik and Rowan Atkinson then you are massively overstating it. In every interview Rik ever did it was clear the love he had for what he did and his eagerness to always be coming up with new ideas. That was his motivating force.
