O'Brien's sister wrote a long, brutal piece about John and explained that he tried to physically drink himself to death like his novel's character and found it too painful and drawn out. The agony was too unbearable. He said he would see demons coming out of the walls after the prolonged binges and he would never die at the end, he'd wake up in the hospital and his father would have to wheel him home, so he shot himself instead. In his box of belongings was the novel, "Better" and his Warner Bros contract. Really sad story.
@Bugson McKenzie Looks like you are correct: "In a 2006 interview with 60 Minutes, Hoffman revealed he had engaged in drug and alcohol abuse during his time at New York University, saying he had used "anything I could get my hands on. I liked it all."[145] Following his graduation in 1989, he entered a drug rehabilitation program at age 22, and remained sober for 23 years. However, he relapsed in 2013, and admitted himself to drug rehabilitation for about ten days in May of that year."

I watched leaving las vegas in the theatre drunk several times when it came out. I was convinced it was a comedy. Only years later when I saw it again on the couch at home with my wife, sober, I realised it was in fact a deeply depressing tragedy. My conclusion is that life is like a comedy when your drunk.
Your comment reminds me of the times I'd watch Intervention. If I was drunk, I'd laugh my ass off, but if I just smoked a joint, I would cry like a bitch. Either way, that show is not to be watched sober.
Phillip Seymour Hoffman was an incredible actor because he was able to be himself in so many different roles due to his addiction issues, which I'm sure stemmed from his own personal insecurities. It really sucks he is gone because every single character he played was genius.
The Leaving Las Vegas observation was so funny because it's true. I watched it back when I was an alcoholic and thought that he was "pretty functional all things considered." Funny that Hoffman's addiction to inhalation of gasoline and model engine fuel was not in the original script, but was written into the film when it was obvious they could not get him to stop.
